Definition Confirmation is the sacrament that strengthens a person with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It seals (or completes) the gift of the Holy Spirit first poured out in Baptism.

Important Symbols Imposition (or laying on) of hands Anointing with Oil of Chrism Sign of the Cross Paschal or Easter Candle Gift of Peace

People Involved Bishop (a successor of the apostles) The person being confirmed Sponsor Family and friends

Effect of the Sacrament

The effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is the full outpouring (i.e. coming to candidates in a special way) of the Holy Spirit as given to the apostles at the first Pentecost.

This is made present through the gifts of the Spirit! Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the newly confirmed receives the strength live according to Jesus' teachings. A life strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit shows the fruits of the Holy Spirit, for all to see. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us our lives become more God-like.

Link to Scripture / Jesus’ Life

Read The Coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-13)

At Pentecost the Holy Spirit appeared to the disciples gathered and gave them a gift – the ability to speak in other languages! With this gift, they were able to go forth and spread the Gospel. When we are confirmed, we also receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, giving us the strength to live according to Jesus' teachings.

The Holy Spirit, given to the apostles at Pentecost (in the form of tongues of FIRE), strengthened them for the mission God intended. In a similar way, Confirmation is like our own Pentecost.

At Confirmation we are filled and strengthened by the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit give us the spiritual power to be better Christians. They are wisdom, understanding, right judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence and wonder and awe in God's presence.

In Confirmation, the bishop dips his right thumb in the chrism and smears the perfumed oil on the candidate's forehead, in the form of a cross, with the words ‘Be sealed with the Holy Spirit’.

Definition Eucharist is the sacrament that nourishes a person in his or her faith.

Important Symbols Lectern (also known as the Table of the Word of God) The Book of the Gospels Altar Chalice The Bread and Wine (i.e. The Body and Blood of Christ)

People Involved Priest or Bishop (to minister the Holy Communion) The person receiving their First Eucharist God / Jesus is made present through the Eucharist Family, friends and parish community

Effect of the Sacrament

The Eucharist completes the process of Christian initiation, which includes Baptism, Confirmation, Reconciliation and First Eucharist.

It provides us with the spiritual food we need as fully initiated members of God's family, the Church. To grow in our lives as Christians, we need the spiritual nourishment of the Eucharist throughout our lives.

In the Eucharist, ‘we become what we eat’. Our sins are washed away and we are strengthened by the body and blood of Christ to live the kind of good and holy life Jesus wants us to live – a Eucharistic life. By receiving the Eucharist, the participant also has the important responsibility to help the poor and needy.

When the Eucharist is received, we are transformed and nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ. At the end of mass, we are sent forth to bring Jesus to others through word and action.

Jesus' words and actions at the Last Supper are familiar to most of us through the words of the Eucharistic Prayer:

On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread and gave you thanks and praise. He broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you."

When supper was ended, he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to his disciples, and said: "Take this all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me."

Other Important Information (You MUST Know)!

The Eucharist, unlike Baptism and Confirmation, may be received over and over again.

The 12 apostles were present at the Last Supper when Jesus first broke the bread and blessed the wine (i.e. initiating the Eucharist)

Through the priest's words of consecration, the bread and wine are transformed (or changed) into the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus is present in the Eucharist through the symbols of the bread and wine. This is called TRANSUBSTANTIATION!

We can live a Eucharistic life by following Jesus’ teachings (see the last page of this booklet for more information about living a Eucharistic life)

Definition Reconciliation is the sacrament that offers a person God’s forgiveness.

Important Symbols During the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the priest will wear a purple stole as it symbolises sorrow and penance

The priest makes a Sign of the Cross over the penitent whilst reciting the final words of the Prayer of Absolution - “And I absolve you from you sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

People Involved Priest (who forgives in God’s name) Penitent (the person receiving reconciliation)

7B Religious EducationEffect of the Sacrament

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the priest forgives in Jesus' name. This sacrament restores our relationship with God when we have sinned.

When we participate in Reconciliation and repent our sins, we receive God’s healing touch, grace and forgiveness.

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Church takes the penitent through a series of steps or stages to move the penitent through the process of repentance and reconciliation. The stages are:1. contrition or repentance for sins committed2. confession of sins3. penance or satisfaction4. absolution from sins committed.

Link to Scripture / Jesus’ Life

Read the parable of The Prodigal (or Lost) Son (Luke 15:11-32). In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, the son sinned, returned and was forgiven by his father. The Sacrament of Reconciliation helps us to repair our relationships with God (and one another) after we have sinned or done wrong. When we go to confession, we are like the younger son who goes to the father and asks for forgiveness. God is like the farther who forgives us completely and is so full of joy when we come back.

Other Important Information (You MUST Know)!

In the Sacrament of Reconciliation: confession refers to telling the priest your sins penance is the priest’s recommendation to say a

prayer of carry out some action after you leave contrition is where you are invited to say a prayer of

sorrow aloud absolution refers to the moment when your sins are

forgiven

Christians can receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation as many times as needed, when forgiveness is required!

Throughout history, the Sacrament of Reconciliation has been called:Conversion, Penance, Confession and Forgiveness.

SICK

Important Symbols Oil of the Sick (to heal, strengthen and cleanse) The sign of the cross (anointed on the person’s forehead

and palms) Forehead and hands Laying on of hands

People Involved Priest or Bishop (who acts in the person of Christ when he administers the sacrament)

The person who is seriously ill or close to death

Effect of the Sacrament

The sick person receives "strength, peace, and courage" to get through illness or old age in a Christian manner. Their sins are forgiven, even if they are unconscious or cannot say their sins out loud. Their physical health may be restored, if it is God's will. Finally, the Sacrament prepares the sick person "for passing over to eternal life" (CCC 1532).

The anointing of the sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical strength during an illness, especially near the time of death. It is most likely one of the last sacraments one will receive.

Link to Scripture / Jesus’ Life

After Jesus death, resurrection and ascension into heaven, the Church continued to carry out the mission to pray for the sick and anoint them with oil. The Letter of James reflects the teaching of the early Church.

Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven. (James

5: 14- 15)

Today we celebrate God's care and concern for the seriously ill and the elderly through the Anointing of the Sick. As a source of grace, Anointing of the Sick helps the recipients grow in faith and trust in God. No matter what their condition is, they are not alone. Jesus Christ is present, healing them in a fundamental way.

Other Important Information (You MUST Know)!

The priest anoints the forehead and hands of the sick person with oil while saying a prayer.

The sacrament may be received more than once and as many times as needed.

The Anointing of the Sick offers prayers for possible recovery, with the more important intention to give strength to the soul of the sick person. If physical recovery is God's will, so be it. If not, then the person needs the grace, strength, and encouragement to accept the illness with dignity. It helps the sick person to trust in God, no matter what happens.

Definition Holy Orders is the sacrament that makes a man a priest.

Important Symbols Lying prostrate before the altar Laying on of hands Priestly stole and chasuble Chrism (used to anoint the hands) Chalice and paten

People Involved Bishop (as the successor to the apostles) The man being ordained into priesthood

Effect of the Sacrament

Holy Orders celebrates the ordination of men as bishops, priests, and deacons.

The Church teaches that those who receive the sacrament of Holy Orders are set apart in the name of Jesus to teach and take care of God's people. The work of the priest is about leadership and service. As well we celebrating mass and praying every day, priests lead and serve God's people in four ways:

1. Preaching and teaching the good news of Jesus' love for everyone.

2. Leading the parish community in celebrating the sacraments

3. Leading the parish community in working together to build up the Christian family

4. Helping the parish community to serve the poor and all those in need.

These activities are known as the ministry of the priest. They have their origins in the gospels.

Link to Scripture / Jesus’ Life

The ministry of the priest is a sacred work because it is sharing in and continuing the work of Jesus who came to bring God's kingdom to everyone. The twelve apostles did not choose Jesus. They were chosen by Jesus himself to continue the work he had begun:

Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when the day

came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles.

- Luke 6:12-13

7B Religious EducationEffect of the Sacrament

The Sacrament of Marriage makes an indissoluble bond – a bond that cannot be dissolved – between the husband and wife. The bond lasts until the death of one of the spouses (i.e. when a couple are married, they are married for life! It is a permanent relationship).

It is indissoluble because God makes the bond. When God does something, we do not have the power to undo it!

Marriage is a covenant. A covenant is like a sacred agreement or promise between people and God. The Sacrament of Matrimony is a sign of love, service and self giving. It is a lifelong agreement between two people who love each other and promise to be faithful to one another for the rest of their life. It is a permanent and an exclusive bond, a covenant, sealed by God.

Link to Scripture / Jesus’ Life

In the New Testament Jesus teaches us about the nature of marriage. He taught us that marriage is a life-long commitment, based on ETERNAL (endless) LOVE. It is a relationship “until death do us part”!

Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

- Mark 10:12Other Important Information (You MUST Know)!

In the Catholic Church, the Sacrament of Matrimony is celebrated in a church.

The Liturgy of Marriage is the most important part of the wedding ceremony.
