Omega-3 Symposium – the latest news on long-chain Omega-3: health benefits, sources, and future R&D needs The AAOCS in collaboration with the Omega-3 Centre are hosting a one day omega 3 symposium on November 7, with international and national experts covering all the major health attributes of long chain omega-3, i.e. cardiovascular, metabolic, anti-inflammatory, cognitive and infant development. Omega-3 Symposium – the latest news on long-chain Omega-3: health benefits, sources, and future R&D needs

The AAOCS in collaboration with the Omega-3 Centre are hosting a one day omega 3 symposium on November 7, with international and national experts covering all the major health attributes of long chain omega-3, i.e. cardiovascular, metabolic, anti-inflammatory, cognitive and infant development. We are also looking at sources, sustainability and bioavailability, which will include fish oil, krill oil, algae oil and new land plant sources of omega-3 including long-chain omega-3 and ALA.

Adam Ismail is Executive Director of the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s, where he has overseen growth since GOED’s founding in 2007 to over 150 members today, overturning a ban on fish oil imports in Europe, and establishment of

nutritional intake recommendations and health claims in multiple countries. Previously, he worked for Cargill in charge of commercializing their omega-3 food

ingredient business, and at Health Strategy Consulting and Health Business Partners on investment banking and strategy consulting projects.

Prof. Dr. Clemens von Schacky has been leading the unit of Preventive Cardiology at the Ludwig Maximilians-University of Munich for more than 20 years. Using methods from molecular biology to randomized clinical trials, he investigated topics such as omega-3 fatty

acids, aspirin, ACE-inhibitors, diabetes, and others resulting in 99 peer-reviewed publications. Among other committees, he works for German Cardiac Society on the German guidelines on

Cardiovascular Prevention, and is member of the Board of Directors of ISSFAL, the International Society For the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids. Together with WS Harris, he

invented and defined the Omega-3 Index (later renamed “HS-Omega-3 Index®). He founded and owns a laboratory, Omegametrix, which measures the Omega-3 Index and other

parameters for research projects and for clinical routine.

Dr Beverly Mühlhäusler is an NHMRC Career Development Award Fellow and head of the Metabolic Health Unit of the FOODplus Research Centre at the University of Adelaide. She has a long standing interest in perinatal nutrition and identifying interventions for long-term

metabolic health. At this meeting, Bev will discuss her work focussing on the role of the omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in fetal and infant nutrition, and whether maternal omega-3 supplementation might offer a way to improve the metabolic health of

future generations.

Dr Nils Hoem was educated M.Sc. Pharmacy at University of Oslo, Norway, in 1983 and finished a Dr. Philos. in Pharmacology at University of Oslo in 1991. He was

a Associate Professor at University of Oslo until 2000. After working as a visiting scientist at University of Southern California from 2000-2001, he has held Director positions at MDS Pharma Services Europe, Pronova Biopharma Norway and finally

joined Aker Biomarine Antarctic as a Chief Scientist in 2008

Assoc Prof Giovanni Turchini, and ARC fellow, is based at Deakin University, Warrnambool. His research interests span from aquaculture, fish nutrition, fish oil replacement and fatty acid metabolism in cultured aquatic species to lipid nutrition and biochemistry, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, seafood quality and traceability, and ethical issues encountered in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. His most recent researches are about the roles of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) as co-factors for n-3 LC-PUFA biosynthesis in fish and mammals.
