Week 4

Activity 6

Sheila changes more than any other character. At first she is playful and self-centred, enjoying the attention her engagement brings. But when she hears of the girl’s death she shows a sensitive side to her nature: she responds to the girl as a person, not as cheap labour, and criticises her father.

Page 10: Web viewREVISION WORKBOOK. ENGLISH LIT – MODERN TEXTS. Remember to annotate your text and underline important quotations. Week

She understands the Inspector’s message and goes stronger as the play goes on. Gather quotes to show her development. In the ‘analysis’ column, explain what the quotes show about her developing character. Remember you can use dialogue and stage directions as evidence.

Activity 7

Week 6READING THIS WEEK: Inspector Calls, Act 1 and half of Act 2. Activity 10 (30 mins)

The play’s purpose is to show the importance of social responsibility – the idea that people should act in a way that helps less privileged people rather than hurting them.

Priestley was a supporter of socialism – his plays promote social responsibility and criticise the problems caused by the class divide.

Look in the text at these examples of occasions when you can see the characters’ attitudes towards responsibility:

Mr Birling’s speech on page 9-10 and Eric’s echoing of the speech on page 58 Mrs Birling’s views, towards the end of Act 2, on who’s to blame for the girl’s death What we learn of Eric’s behaviour towards to the girl in Act 3
