SAINT CORNELIUS PARISH FAITH FORMATION FOR CHILDREN PROGRAM

FAMILY HANDBOOK2015-2016

Dear Parents,

What an awesome responsibility, an awesome gift is your child! On the day you presented your child for Baptism, you took on the added responsibility of not only caring and providing for your child, but you promised to be the first and best teachers in the ways of Faith.

I am always utterly amazed at how parents are able to manage this responsibility. But you know as well as I do –it’s never done in a vacuum and you can’t do it alone. With all the pressures of life and all the activities and commitments sometimes it is hard to remember that Jesus always comes first.

I thank you and congratulate you for sharing your Faith with your child and cooperating with our talented, volunteer teachers who, like you, love your child and love Jesus.

Sincerely in Christ,Reverend Monsignor Gregory J. Parlante

MISSION STATEMENT

We in the St. Cornelius Parish Faith Formation of Children Program proclaim Jesus Christ in Word, Sacraments and Charity. Through Word, Sacraments and Charity we discover who Jesus is for us, and deepens our relationship with Him.

Come discover Jesus at St. Cornelius!

FAITH FORMATION FOR CHILDREN PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

In support of the St. Cornelius Parish Mission Statement, the Faith Formation for Children Program provides the public and private school students of the parish with a Catholic Religious Education. It acknowledges their parents/guardians as the primary educators of faith development and supports these parents/guardians in partnership in educating the students in their faith formation. In collaboration of our Pastor, administration, faculty, staff, parents and parish community, we strive to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ as a model for our children. In this Christian environment we hope that the students will grow through their knowledge, work, example and service to the Catholic Church, learning how to make their faith living, conscious and active. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia creates guidelines for the teaching of religious

1.

education for the parishes. Under the direction of the Pastor, the Director of Faith Formation for Children, the Policies and Procedures manual, and in conjunction with the Archdiocesan Guidelines, determine the management and education policies of Saint Cornelius Faith Formation for Children Program. Implementation of these school policies and curriculum guidelines are the co-responsibility of administration and faculty.

The Goals of St. Cornelius Faith Formation Of Children Program

1. To recognize parents as the primary catechists of their children and assist them by providing sound catechesis on the catechism of the Catholic Church.

2. To cultivate the student’s knowledge of the Catholic faith through biblical teaching, the teaching of church history and doctrine, the study of each person of the Trinity, the understanding of the Holy Mass and the study of the lives of the saints.

3. Develop a desire to have a close relationship with Jesus through spiritual practices of prayer, song, reception of the sacraments and attendance at weekly Mass and Holy Days.

4. To have a respect and devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary the Mother of God.

5. Create in the student an eagerness to share their faith through social practices of charity.

2.

REGISTRATION

Registration begins at the end of January. Current students receive a Re-registration form in class. Registration is announced in the Sunday Parish Bulletin every week from January through May. An email notice is also sent to those families who have not re-registered. The deadline for registration is May 15th. After that date the registration fee increases. Early registration is beneficial to securing a preferred day and time. It also allows us to plan for the number of classrooms, desks, books, and catechists we will need for the Fall.

Registration for any day or for any class will be closed when the student limit is met. This is done for safety, comfort ( desk/desk size availability is limited) and for the ability to teach effectively. Early enrollment is beneficial to securing preferred day and time. The registration form must be accompanied by payment in full. Registration fees are non-refundable. Requests for any changes must be in writing (phone calls will not be accepted) and will be honored if there is room.

If this is the first time for registration for a new student, a baptismal certificate and any other sacramental certificates must be presented with the registration form. Be sure to bring in any IEP forms, Medical issues and forms, and custody papers.

The fee for registration is $200 for the first child and $50 for each additional child. There is also a $25 Facility Fee. Registration implies commitment to all sessions. The registration fee is non-refundable. Registration is required for those participating in Home-Based Catechesis.

CLASS SCHEDULE

Tuesday 4:45 to 6:00 pmWednesday 6:00 to 7:15 pm

VOLUNTEERING

Recently instituted to the program was volunteering. Parents with students enrolled in the Faith Formation Program are required to volunteer 3 hours to CCD for safety; this translates to three classes of the Faith Formation Program to monitor the front door, the four hallways, and the parking lot. Please review Safe environment Program below for needed clearances. We anticipate your cooperation to make this the safest Faith Formation Program in the Archdiocese.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM

The Archdiocese has required that we instruct the students in the Safe Touch program each year. If you would like to review these lessons, they are available online at :http://archphila.org/catechetical/resources/lessons.htm . In addition, all catechists and aides have PA Criminal Background Checks, Child Abuse Clearance, and have attended the Protecting God’s Children training. This training is now being offered at St. Cornelius parish. Please check the Bulletin for dates and times.

We will strive to have in each classroom two qualified adults (teacher/teacher aide) present at all times for the protection of all involved, especially our children.

3.

New Archdiocesan Requirements for Safety of our Children (July 30, 2013): ALL VOLUNTEERS who have any contact with children are required to obtain two PA . Background Checks. The fees for these clearances has been waived. If you recently moved into the state of PA, a fingerprint clearance is also required and this has a fee. For more information concerning fingerprinting contact the DCIU at 610-938-9000. To meet the complete clearances for volunteering you will need:

PA STATE POLICE CRIMINAL HISTORY REPORT: This can be obtained at https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home,jsp with results available within a few minutes. Renewal is required every 5 years. (Please print and give to Faith Formation Director)

PA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WELFARE AND CHILD ABUSE CLEARANCE CHECK: this form can be obtained online at : http:www.dpw.state.pa.us/findaform/childabusehistoryclearanceforms. Renewal is required every 5 years. (Please print and give to Faith Formation Director)

As you become more active in the parish or even in your child’s other school you will soon find that these are basic requirements needed to participate with children (scouting, coaching, drama, music, etc.). We all want to create the safest environment for our children.

CUSTODY

In cases of shared, joint or sole custody, parents must provide a copy of the custody papers before classes start in September. By Archdiocesan guidelines we are required to keep this information with the child’s file. Unless altered by the Court, separated or divorced parent both have rights.

It is the responsibility of both biological parents to provide the Parish with the latest, most up to date Custodial Order or Custody Agreement. St. Cornelius requests these documents at the time of registration. If either the Custody Order or Custody Agreement changes during the course of the year, it remains the responsibility of both biological parents to provide that document to the Parish immediately!

Our program abides by the provisions of the Buckley amendment with respect to the rights of non-custodial parents. In the absence of a court order to the contrary, our program will provide the non-custodial parent with access to the records and other program related information regarding the child. If there is a court order specifying that there is to be no information given, it is the responsibility of the custodial parent to provide the program director with an official and latest copy of the court order dealing with the education/visitation of the child. It is also the parent’s responsibility to inform the Faith Formation Program of the addresses where the student’s records should be sent.

If a court order prohibits our releasing a child into the custody of a non-custodial parent, it is the responsibility of the custodial parent to provide the program director with an official copy of the court order or custody section of the divorce decree.

4.

HOME-BASED CATECHESIS

Parents requesting the Home-Based Catechesis Program must meet with the Director of the Religious Education Program at St. Cornelius to review the specific guidelines set forth by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and St. Cornelius Parish. Parents are to state the need for requesting Home-Based Catechesis and are then requested to sign a contract stating that they will fulfill the necessary duties as a parent Catechist.

“Home-based catechesis is understood as the work of Catholic parents/guardians who undertake the formal religious education of their own child(ren) for any length of time and in their own home. (Archbishop Charles Chaput, May 31, 2012.) At St. Cornelius Parish, Home-Based Catechesis is usually not permitted during the sacramental years.

At any time if the parent wishes to cease the Home-Based Catechesis program the child(ren) are permitted to return to the classroom and a class will be assigned.

The pastor reserves the right to end the Home-Based Catechesis to anyone not fulfilling the requirements or duties of a practicing Catholic or violating the Home-Based Catechesis contract. In such circumstances the student needs to return to the classroom and may need to repeat the grade that was incomplete.

5.

PARENTAL PARTICIPATION

The Christian home is the first school and the parents are the first to communicate the faith to their children” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #226)

Since example is more powerful than words, parents are urged to do the following:

+Provide an atmosphere of prayer in the home+Attend Saturday/Sunday/ Holy Day Masses as a family+ Know your Catholic Faith: involve yourself in the many parish opportunities+Encourage frequent reception of the Sacraments of Penance (3 or 4 times a year) including Lent or

Advent Penance Services) and Eucharist weekly).+ Model Catholic ethics and gospel charity within and outside the family+ Attend sacramental preparation programs+ Reinforce the catechist’s work by seeing that their children arrive on time for class and complete

their homework+Return signed communications and Progress Reports on time+Support the code of acceptable behavior and dress which are enumerated under “Student

Responsibilities” on the next page.+ Observe dismissal routine+ Notify the CCD office and individual catechist about special learning or physical needs of their

children,; absences and emergency lateness; pertinent health and medical information; and change of address, phone numbers or other family information.

Mass Schedule: 5:00pm Saturday; 7:30, 9:00, 11:00 am and 7:00 SundayMonday through Friday 7:30 am Mass in Chapel

Sacrament of Penance: Saturday from 4:00 to 4:45 pm in the Daily Mass Chapel in our ChurchOr Call the Parish Life Center at 610-459-2502

Eucharistic Adoration in the Daily Mass Chapel in the Church on Mondays from 8 am to 9 pm and on

Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm6.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

The communication of religious truths needs an atmosphere of love and trust so that each child may have a fulfilling experience of faith. For this experience to take place, mutual respect is imperative. Student responsibilities for creating this atmosphere include the following:

+ Maintain a respectful attitude and speech to catechists and fellow students at all times.+ Cooperation in classroom, during program projects and participation in church.+ Reverent attention to and participation in prayer and teaching component.+ Punctuality+ Preparedness; always bring textbook, folder, pencils, paper for taking notes, completed homework, and absence notes. (A $25 fee will be charged for a lost textbook.)+ Attentiveness: No gum, foods or drinks are permitted. Cell phones must be turned off and put away. No Gameboys, DS, IPods or other electronic games or equipment. Careful listening to the catechist and to fellow students is respectful and beneficial.+ Appropriate dress: We do expect students to come dressed appropriately to learn, to reflect a spiritual respectfulness of our bodies and to be safe. Therefore, rubber sole or leather soled shoes or boots are permitted. No heals or flip flops. Pajama bottoms are not permitted. For gentlemen, all hats and caps are removed when entering the building. Sweat tops, hoodies, coats and jackets must be removed in the classroom. Young ladies must refrain from wearing too tight-fitting pants, short shorts, excessive jewelry or tops that are too revealing. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. + Behavior : Upon arrival please wait quietly in a line along the wall in the hallway until the Catechist arrives. Respect others by keeping your hands, arms, legs, and personal belongings to yourself. At the beginning and ending of class we stand facing the crucifix with hands folded to recite group prayers. Obey the rules of the classroom that are set by the teacher. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and a conference will be set up with the parent(s) or guardian to determine the best plan of action. +Respect the shared space: As we share this facility with the day students and teachers, we are reminded to leave the rooms and school areas in good order if not, better.

7.

ARRIVAL All students will enter the school building through the FRONT DOORS ONLY. The front doors will be open 15 minutes before the session time begins. (Tuesdays 4:30, Wednesday 5:45) Students who arrive at their classrooms before their catechist should wait quietly in the hallway outside the classroom until the catechist arrives. For purposes of safety, no student is permitted in any classroom without an adult or catechist present. Punctuality is imperative! Students will be marked tardy if they arrive late.

ABSENCES

If your child is absent from class, we would appreciate a phone call stating the student’s name and reason of absence. If there is a planned absence, please submit a note with the child’s name, grade and the date your child will be gone. You may wish to discuss with the teacher the work that needs to be covered. It is critical that the material be covered at home as there is limited time during the school year to repeat a lesson, especially for those students enrolled in a sacramental year. We will initiate a follow-up with parents of children who have accumulated two or more absences. Please note: two late arrivals count as one absence!Excused absences are absences when children are ill, there is a death in the family or a health emergency. During excused absences, class work is made up upon the child’s return. Upon returning to class the student must present an absence note signed by the parent/guardian explaining the reason for absence. If no note is presented, the child will be marked as an unexcused absence. These notes are kept on file. Work is not usually provided in advance. Unexcused absences are those absences whereby a student is absent; truant, or on a family vacation. Your child is responsible for making up the work missed.Illness. If your child is ill and had not gone to school that day please refrain from sending them to class. They are to be 24hours free from being ill from any communicable disease. If your child should become ill during class the parents/guardian will be notified and the child must be picked up immediately.

ATTENDANCE

To derive the maximum benefit from formal instructions and classroom activities, students should strive for punctual and consistent attendance.

Important information for reception of Sacraments: First Penance and First Communion: According to policy, candidates preparing to receive First Penance and First Eucharist must have two years of religious education immediately preceding the reception of the Sacraments.Confirmation: For reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation, students must have three years of religious education immediately preceding the Sacrament. Attendance at the Confirmation retreat is mandatory.

8.

The faith formation provided in our programs involves incremental learning. That is, each year builds upon the learning of the previous year. Therefore, it is essential that participants remain enrolled in the program consistently from year to year.

Time is a gift we value greatly, and we are therefore challenged to make the most of the limited time we do have with your children. We ask you to help your children arrange their extracurricular activities around CCD instructional time.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS

In the event of inclement weather or other calamity, we will email you if class in cancelled. Please check your email. If the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District closes or dismisses early because of bad weather, Faith Formation classes for that day will be canceled automatically. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE PARISH LIFE CENTER. The safety of our children, parents, Catechists and volunteers is of the utmost importance.

DISMISSAL

All children must be picked up by a parent or legal guardian. If you are car-pooling and/or your child is being picked up by another adult you are to give us WRITTEN permission for the release of your child containing your child’s name, grade, date to be released, name of the adult, your signature and current date. Please be sure you have turned in the Authorized Pick-Up form.

At dismissal, please park your car and come to meet your child. Let the teacher know so he/she can check the list. Pick up on Tuesday is at 6:00 pm and Wednesday is at 7:15 pm. Please be prompt! Younger children especially become fearful when they are not picked up on time. We will dismiss the younger grades first (ei., 1&2; 3&4; etc.) If a parent has been delayed the child will be escorted by the teacher back into the building to wait on the bench in the hall. If there is an emergency and you know that you will be late, please call the school. Please allow a little extra time and patience the first few weeks.

EARLY DISMISSAL

Early dismissal should be considered an unusual occurrence. In the event that this is necessary, the following procedure must be followed.

If you need to have your child released early due to an emergency, send in a written note or call ahead. When you come to the school you will be asked to sign an early release form accompanied by a note. You must wait in the office until we communicate to the class room and the child will meet you in the office. You are not permitted to go to the classroom. An emergency is not a consistent habit of dismissals in order to get to a sports practice/event.

9.

PARKING LOT

Extreme care must be used in our busy parking lot. Please watch for all of our children. Parents, be sure your child is walking with you to and from the car and running ahead. DO NOT park in the fire lane in front of the school. Handicapped areas are for those with handicapped permits or tags.

TEXTBOOKS

Every participant is assigned a textbook at the beginning of the year which will be blessed by Monsignor. The student is required to bring the textbook to EVERY program session. If a textbook is lost, the cost is $25.00 to replace it. You may wish to cover the book with clear contact.

SUPPLIES

Every student should bring a pencil case containing 2 #2 pencils sharpened; a box of 8 crayons; (grade 3-8) 1 highlighting pen. Also, bring one solid-color 3-ringed folder with paper and 2 horizontal pockets. Be sure the child’s name is clearly marked on the folder and pencil case. After the first session the child’s pencil case will be safely placed in a box in the classroom until the next class. The folder and text will travel home with the child each week. Be sure your child brings his/her text and folder each week.

HOMEWORK

As our philosophy and goals are met assisting parents with the faith formation of their child, homework is an integral part and the connection between home and school. We urge you to show your interest in your child’s religious education by discussing and studying throughout the week the material covered in class. This will reinforce what your child has learned in class as well as involve you in the process of their faith formation. As parents and

10.

catechists we deepen our own knowledge and love of our Faith as we share it with our children.

As a part of the students’ faith formation, homework will be required for all grades 1 to 8. Each catechist will assign homework each week to the class. It may be communicated in the form of a paper or on email. Your role is to be sure it is completed before the next class. If it is a prayer, a practice, or an assignment begin early in the week working on it. Set aside a special time and treat it more importantly than any other subject.

Homework should also include getting your child to Mass each week. So much of our teaching centers around the Mass. The children need to experience the Mass so they can comprehend and make relationships to what we are teaching in class. They need to hear and learn the songs too!Homework is saying daily prayers at home. Morning prayers, mealtime prayers and bedtime prayers are so simple and don’t take much time. Make it a routine.

LEARNING CHALLENGES/HEALTH CONCERNS

You will be asked to fill out an EMERGENCY MEDICAL FORM. This form is needed in case of an emergency. Be sure you fill out the form completely.

Please make the director aware of any learning challenges that your child may have. We want to support each student in the way that is best for him or her to learn. If you child has an IEP, please make a copy and submit to the director. The information will be kept in a confidential file and the catechist will be informed what needs to be done for your child to receive the most benefit from the classes. If your child has any health issues (allergies, special needs, etc.) please inform the director or arrange a conference with the director and/or catechist so that we can help your child to be safe.

MEDICATION PROCEDURES

The administering of medicine to a child outside the doctor’s office or health institution is a parental responsibility and should not be delegated to catechist personnel except under unusual circumstances. We do not provide a school nurse. Please note: No child may carry prescription or over-the-counter-medications around with them unless it is a medical emergency such as a prescribed in haler. These cases would be handled on an individual basis. A doctor’s note would be required in such instances.

11.

PROGRESS REPORTS

As in all formal educational processes, the students will be tested on the material taught. Progress reports will be issued during the year. Catechists will give the progress reports directly to the students. Parents are to review, sign and return the progress reports to the classroom the following week. Parents keep the last progress report given at the last class of the school year.

LOST AND FOUND

A lost and found bin of items belonging to CCD students will be kept in the CCD office. At the end of each semester, usable articles that remain unclaimed will be sent to a homeless shelter. Be sure ALL of your child’s belongs are labeled with his/her name.

COMMUNICATIONS

Communication between parents and the Faith Formation Program is extremely essential to the achievement of our collaborative goals. Avenues of communication used to inform parent(s) of program events may take one of the following forms:

+ Notices in the parish’s weekend bulletin+ Mailings to parents+ Informational meetings+ OUR PRIMARY MEANS OF COMMUNICATIONS WILL BE THROUGH E-MAIL

Your Catechist will contact you with his/her email addressThe director’s email is [email protected] . Constant Contact: By this means, we will be able to reach the greatest number of people most quickly and efficiently especially for weather closings. Note: If your email has changed you will need to notify us immediately.

+ Hand-outs

Parents should check their email weekly for important notices. Homework assignments will be emailed by the catechist. Occasionally a catechist may feel the need to contact a parent whether to resolve an issue, give helpful information to help the child, or to share some positive news. Catechist-parent communication is encouraged. If your child is having a problem always talk to the catechist first. Be a good listener to both child and Catechist. Try to come to a peaceful resolution.

The Director is available to respond to your comments or questions. Please do not hesitate to call about a problem. The sooner we resolve a problem the better for all involved. At no time are parents or guardians permitted to present themselves to a teacher before or during class time. No phone calls are to be made to a teacher’s home. Make an appointment via email or leave a message to have the teacher call you.

12.

DISCIPLINE

Good conduct is expected from every child who is attending the Faith Formation Program. A disruption is unfair to both the catechist and the other students. Serious breaches of conduct, such as constant interruptions of the class, destruction of property, etc, are cause for a child to be dismissed from class and sent to the office. Parents will be notified of the situation. Parents are required to pay for any damage caused by their child.

The Parish Faith Formation Program offered by Saint Cornelius Parish is designed to assist parents with the faith formation of their children, as well as foster values and behaviors that are in accord with Catholic Church teaching. The program has NO TOLERANCE FOR BEHAVIORS THAT ARE CONTRARY TO Catholic faith and morals, including but not limited to ongoing acts of obstinacy, improper or obscene language, fighting, physical, emotional or psychological intimidation, vandalism, demeaning behavior such as name-calling, obscene gestures, and harassment. Such behaviors violate the central teaching of our faith and WILL NOT BE TOLERATED in any form. These categories do not cover every possible situation. The parish determines the standard of what is appropriate or inappropriate behavior both in and out of the classroom; in the school community generally; and, outside the school community where such improper behavior affects the school community.

Conduct by children or parents/guardians, or anyone acting on their behalf, incompatible with the educational a religious mission of the Parish is grounds for disciplinary action including, but not limited to, immediate dismissal of the student as well as reporting the incident to the appropriate legal authorities where appropriate.

In addition, in the case of threats of violence or harassment, in any form, including or, written, or electronic, by a child against any member of the school community, the child if suspended but not dismissed, may be required to have psychological or psychiatric clearance before returning to school.

In the event a student engages in any of the above listed behaviors or any other inappropriate conduct, the following actions may be taken and at the discretion of the pastor or Director of the Faith Formation for Children Program.

1. First incident: The student may be removed from the session and the parent or guardian will be immediately notified by phone by the program director. The program director will schedule a conference with the parents, student and catechist to discuss the matter.

2. Second incident: The student will be removed from the session and be suspended from the program for a period of one session. The parents/guardians will be immediately notified by the program director and required to pick up their child. Prior to returning to the program, the program director will schedule a conference with the parents, student, and catechist to further discuss the matter.

13.

3. Third incident: The student will be removed from the session and dismissed from the program. The parents/guardian will be immediately notified by the program director and required to pick up their child. No refund of tuition or material fees will be made.

However, St. Cornelius reserves the right to supersede the forgoing course of action depending of the particular circumstances of any given situation.

CONTRABAND

1. BRINGING CONTRABAND TO PROGRAM SESSIONS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED AND WILL BE CONFISCATED AND RETURNED TO PARENTS ONLY. Depending on the contraband confiscated, the proper legal authorities could be notified.

2. Items considered contraband include, but are not limited to , weapons, drugs, gum, food, beverages, toys, electronic games, i-pods, alcohol and tobacco products.

3. It is unlawful for minors to be in possession of weapons, drugs, alcohol or tobacco products. Participants found to be in possession of such products may be suspended from the program. The proper legal authorities could be notified.

4. Cell phone: If the cell phone is turned off and is not being used by the student for texting, talking or other purposes, they may keep the cell phone in their possession. ALL CELL PHONES ARE TO BE IN THE OFF POSITION BEFORE ENTERING THE BUILDING AND PUT AWAY. If the student is using the cell phone during CCD, the cell phone will be confiscated and returned to the parents only.

BULLY BEHAVIOR

As a member of the Body of Christ and part of the St. Cornelius Faith Formation Community, each person has a right to treat another student in any way that will cause physical or emotional pain.

Bullying may involve but is not limited to: threats, written or verbal, teasing, name-calling, slurs, rumors, jokes, false accusations, intimidation, stalking innuendos, demeaning comments, pranks, writing/drawing unkind notes or pictures, social isolation, gestures, cyber-bullying or other verbal or written conduct.

Cyber-bullying includes the following misuses of digital technology: written threats, teasing, intimidating, or making false accusations about another student or teacher by way of any technological tool, such as sending or posting inappropriate emails, instant messages, text messages, digital images or website postings (including blogs and social networking sites).

14.

Scope: This policy prohibits bullying in any form or by any media that occurs either:1. On school/church premises before, during or after Faith Formation session hours.2. During any Faith Formation Program functions or activities3. Any outside incidents involving students of St. Cornelius Faith Formation Program.

Reporting Complaints: Each student and parent has a duty to report any legitimate incident of bullying/cyberbullying to the program. The program cannot act on hearsay or rumors however; if a student experiences (or a parent witnesses or learns of) of any incident involving the above, it should be reported to the director. Parents are encouraged to share with the director any in-appropriate emails, “tweets” or other social media posting. Parents should regularly check their child’s account and make sure that what they are posting is appropriate as well.

SEXUAL HARRASSMENT

For purposes of this policy, the term “sexual harassment” refers to any unwelcome sexual attention, sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal, visual or physical contact of sexual nature. Sexual harassment is unacceptable conduct and will not be accepted.

The program will investigate all allegations of sexual harassment and will take appropriate corrective action when warranted. Any student, parent, or teacher who is determined, as a result of such an investigation, to have engaged in this type of harassment will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.

PEANUT/NUT FREE

The program does not allow food during the sessions. Please be aware that we share an environment that does not permit any form of nut to be in the school as we have many children with airborne and regular allergies.

WITHDRAWALSPlease notify the director in writing at least two weeks in advance stating your reason for withdrawal if the student is leaving before the end of the year. No records will be forwarded unless tuition is current.

POLICY FOR ACCEPTABLE PRACTICES OF TECHNOLOGYTechnology can be a valuable tool in your child’s learning and in our program. However we need to be cautious of guidelines that appropriate. + Parental/Guardian written permission must be given for your child to be photographed or have their name listed in the church bulletin. + At no time may a parent photograph their child with other children with a digital device capable of uploading to cyber space. +Those students preparing a report for a class (ei., saint, etc.) must give proper credit to the cite.

15.

PRAYERSArchdiocesan guidelines require that prayer memorization be part of the religious education curriculum. Prayer memorization for grades 1 to 6 is worked on at home. Below is a list of the prayers children in each grade are to memorize.

“What enormous power the prayer of children has! This becomes a model for grown-ups themselves: praying with simple and complete trust means praying as children pray.”

Pope John Paul II, Letter to Children, p. 13

The Holy MassAnd the simple fact remains: the Eucharist is the most beautiful, powerful prayer that we have. To miss Mass is to miss Jesus –His Word, His People, His presence, His Body and Blood. Our Sunday observance, above all our Sunday Eucharist, is our anticipation of that definitive Sabbath rest when we shall enter into the Lord’s Day that will have no end. We need Sunday here below so that we might not lose our path to heaven above! We live on Sunday now what we hope to live forever in heaven.

SAINTS

We celebrate the saints on their feast days during the year because they remind us of what is truly important—to get to heaven! The saints are there already and they pray for us that we might follow them in drawing close to Jesus. That’s why the Blessed Mother is the greatest of all the saints, because she is the closest to her divine Son and wants nothing more than to draw us close to Him.

THE TEACHING OF CHRIST IN RELATION TO CYO SPORTS

Our primary purpose as a Catholic parish is to make Christ present to all through the Eucharist and by teaching Christ. All baptized Catholics have a right to know Christ through the sacraments and learning. St. Cornelius Parish has a duty to provide Christ to all.

In order to put Christ first, all athletes who participate in CYO sports must be enrolled in a Catholic school or enrolled in the Faith Formation program. It is the duty of all Catholic parents and the parish, to teach our children the faith. We provide a sports program to teach Catholic values of sportsmanship and community building, so attendance at all classes is required. Arriving late, or leaving early, two times will count as one absence. Two absences will result in dismissal from CYO sports for the year. The coaches of CYO sports realize the primary importance of Religious Education and have not scheduled games or practices that will interfere with the schedule of Faith Formation Classes.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Vacation Bible School is usually held in June after the school year has been completed. All rules and regulations in the Faith Formation Program apply to those attending Vacation Bible School. Registration for students and volunteers begins in spring.

SUMMARY

This handbook contains an outline of rules, regulations and guidelines for our Faith Formation Program. They form a structure so that we can safely help our children to develop a close, personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This book has been designed to allow us to help you form your child in the Catholic Faith. Thank you for allowing us to work with you to get our children and us to Heaven. This is a work that we are called to do and one that we love. All members of the Faith Formation family – students, parents, catechist, aides, office staff and volunteers are remembered in prayer every day.

PASTOR/DIRECTOR’S RIGHT TO AMEND

The pastor and the Faith Formation Director retain the right to amend the handbook for just cause. Parents will be notified if changes are made through the website.
