Welcome to St. Edward’s Episcopal Church – established in 1968. This leaflet is your guide to the liturgy and is a resource for the material needed for this service. You will find three books in the pew rack in front of you - The 1979 Book of Common Prayer (red book), The Hymnal 1982 (blue book) and LEVAS (Lift Every Voice and Sing II - black and red cover). Hymn numbers preceded by ‘S’ are from the Service Music at the front of the Hymnal 1982. It is customary to stand during the singing of hymns, unless otherwise directed. It is perfectly appropriate to either stand, sit, or kneel for prayers. If you are visiting with us today, please be sure to fill out a Visitor Card (found in the pew in front of you) and give it to one of our ushers. We are blessed that you are here, and we look forward to meeting you! As announced last Sunday, September will be a month of experiencing different liturgies from our worldwide Anglican Communion. Our first Sunday, Sept 2, will be a Holy Eucharist that will pull resources from various Anglican sources (see page 14 of this leaflet for a list of resources).

We are also experimenting with changes that might help us facilitate the flow of our worship services. Here are two we are implementing this month:

The Lesson Song of Songs 2:8-13 (Modern English Version)

The voice of my beloved! Look, he comes leaping over the mountains, bounding over the hills. My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look, he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, looking through the lattice. My beloved speaks and says to me: “Rise up, my love,

my fair one, and come away. For now the winter has past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its green figs, and the vines their blossoms; and they give forth fragrance. Rise up, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 45:1-2, 7-10 (8:00 & 10:30) (Modern English Version)

The People read responsively as indicated. Leader 1 My heart is overflowing with a good thought;      I am speaking my works for the king;      my tongue is the pen of a skilled scribe. All 2 You are fairer than all the sons of men;        favor is poured on your lips;      therefore God has blessed you forever. Leader 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness;      therefore God, your God, anointed you

with the oil of gladness above your companions. All 8 All your garments are fragrant

with myrrh and aloes and cassia;        from the ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad.

Leader 9 Kings’ daughters are among your honorable women;     at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. All 10 Listen, O daughter, consider and incline your ear;        forget your own people, and your father’s house.

The Epistle James 1:17-27 (Modern English Version)

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no change or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of His creatures. Therefore, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. Therefore lay aside all filthiness and remaining wickedness and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a mirror. He views himself, and goes his way, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in his deeds. If anyone among you seems to be religious and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Sequence (10:30) O Master, let me walk with thee Hymn 660 The Gospel Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 (Modern English Version)

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.People Glory to You, Lord Christ.

The Pharisees and certain scribes who came from Jerusalem gathered around Him. When they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled,

that is, ritually unwashed hands, they found fault. For the Pharisees and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands ritually, do not eat, keeping the tradition of the elders. When they come from the market, unless they wash, they do not eat. And there are many other traditions which they have received and observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers and bronze vessels and dining couches. So the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?” He answered, “Well has Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. In vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men—the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” When He had called all the people to Him, He said, “Listen to Me, every one of you, and understand: There is nothing from outside a man that by entering him can defile him. But the things which come out of the man are what defile him. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adultery, fornication, murder, theft, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride and foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”Gospeler This is the Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to You, Lord Christ.

Sermon The Rev. Canon Dr. A. Gordon Okunsanya

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
