o Day 1 Read : Today we will read the story When Sophie Gets Angry – Really, Really Angry By Molly Bang. Have you ever been really upset with someone? This is a story about a girl named Sophie who gets really angry.

o Day 2 Read – Yesterday we read the story When Sophie Gets Angry – Really, Really Angry By Molly Bang. Today we are going to read the story again. Make sure you listen very carefully to the details so you will remember what happens.

Some words in the directions are highlighted for clarity.

Answers to questions are framed in partially completed graphic organizers to model task and make the question clear

A variety of pictures are provided for the students to choose from to assist in retelling the story. For students that are not yet able to express themselves orally, teacher will be able to determine some of their understanding. The pictures are at the end of the assessment and need to be cut out for the students’ use.

A line has been added in check off boxes to record information about student’s ability to choose appropriate pictures and/or their English language ability at this time.

Modifications for each assessment question for Grade K Unit 1:

Question 1 : Teacher reads the question emphasizing the word ‘mostly’ and makes sure students put a circle around one of the picture choices.

Question 2: Teacher points to Sophie’s sister in book and points to ‘angry’ on feelings chart, reminding students of these terms and states, “Sophie’s sister made her angry in this story.”

Question 4: Teacher provides pictures from the story. Teacher asks students to look at the pictures and choose pictures that shows something from the beginning, middle and (teacher demonstrates sections of the book while talking).Tell me what happened in the story.Teacher provides sentence starters: In the beginning of the story … Teacher checks the appropriate box(es) and writes notes on line for ELLs response.
