School Rugby Ambassadors Update – June 2015

Clare Mount Specialist Sports College.

Summer 2015 - Since attending the initial launch event of the School Rugby Ambassadors programme with World Cup winner Will Greenwood in Wilmslow last Summer, our School Rugby Ambassadors Sam, Michael, Dylin and Jacob have been involved in helping to plan and develop the following programme of activities.

September 2014 – Sam, Dylin and Michael attended interviews in Manchester to join The Pack. Sam and Michael have since accepted roles as volunteers and will be part of the Spectator Services Team in Manchester for the England versus Uruguay game on the 10th October 2015.

October 2014 – Working with Chris Hughes, the Cheshire Community Rugby Coach, the boys all took part in a Tag Rugby Leaders Award alongside other leaders doing their BTEC Level 2 sports award. The boys subsequently helped to organise a tag rugby festival for 6 local primaries which was supported by Sale Sharks rugby club. The event introduced the values of the Rugby World Cup to the cluster of schools who attended.

November 2014 – February 2015 – The SRAs helped deliver a whole school assembly about the Rugby World Cup with a focus on TREDS (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship). These values have been key themes through-out school, across residential trips and other events. The assembly and values scheme has been shared with our Sports College outreach team and introduced to local schools. Michael and Sam enrol in sports courses at College, but stay in regular contact with the school.

March 2015 – Working with 22 School Direct trainees from Liverpool John Moores, Clare Mount hosted a training day about inclusion and set a project for students of adapting the Rugby World Cup resources to the needs of our pupils. The trainees ran a half day cross-curricular event for over 100 pupils in KS3 covering learning the HAKA (Dance/Drama), cooking ginger bread rugby men (Food Technology), using i-pads to record motivational speeches (ICT), designing Rugby World Cup trophies (Art), playing rugby top trumps (Maths), using a catapult to fire projectile rugby balls and learning about sports injuries (Science), whilst others got to simply play the game (PE).

Dylin secured a place in College. 10 new BTEC sport students asked to be School Rugby Ambassadors.

April 2015 – Jacob and 13 other pupils attended a coaching session with

Sale Sharks community coaches and watched the Sale Vs. Quins game.

May 2015 – All pupils made a pledge for something they would do regarding one of the Rugby World Cup values. These will be displayed down the corridors in school.

June 2015 – The school rugby team competes at the North West tag-rugby festival in Blackburn RFC. 10 schools signed up to a pilot to develop a fitness master-class working alongside England Rugby Strength and Conditioning Coach Neil Parsley. As part of National School Sport Week pupils will participate in a series of personal skills and fitness challenges with an emphasis on TREDS. 12 pupils will win the chance to attend the Italy Versus Canada Game on the 26th September 2015.

On June 30th Schools (staff, leaders and SRAs) from the local area will be able to access Tag Rugby and Rugby Ready training to deliver and develop the game in their own school.

July 2015 – Sam and Michael will attend Talking Tactics and Home Turf training. As part of the Trophy Tour the staff at Clare Mount have been inspired to enter a tag rugby team into a festival of rugby at the Chester Roodee.

September 17 th 2015 – Our School Rugby Ambassadors will run a Rugby World Cup festival, with Opening Ceremony, for schools in the local area at a local rugby club.

September 26 th 2015 – Pupils from Clare Mount will attend the Italy vs. Canada game in Leeds.

October 10 th 2015 – Sam and Michael will be part of The Pack in Manchester.

November 2015 – SRAs will run an assembly for whole school and local schools about their journey and experience.
