The Scottish Press Awards seek to encourage and promote high standards of journalism and to recognise professional skills. OPEN TO: Journalists, photographers and cartoonists working for print and/or digital newspapers and magazines published in Scotland. Scottish based journalists, photographers and cartoonists producing work exclusively on Scottish affairs for non-Scottish print or online publications. TO QUALIFY: Entries must have been published between 1 st January and 31 st December 2015. The Scottish Press Awards seek to encourage and promote high standards of journalism and to recognise professional skills.

ENTRY RULES:1. Each category is open to individual journalists only, with the exception of the Campaign, Front Page,

Journalism Team & Innovation categories.

2. An entry is defined as THREE articles (unless otherwise stated in the category criteria).

3. Each publication is limited to a maximum of SIX entries per category.

4. The editor must approve of all entries and their signature and contact information must appear on the entry form as verification.

5. Judges may, at their discretion, transfer a submission from one category to another if appropriate.

6. Articles must be written in the English language.

7. If a submission does not adhere to the rules, it will be subject to disqualification at the discretion of the judges. The judges’ decision is final.

RESULTS:The shortlist will be published in March 2016 and the winners will be announced at the Award Ceremony and Dinner on Thursday 21st April 2016 at the Radisson BLU Glasgow. For more information, please visit www.scotns.org.uk/awards/the-awards/.

1. SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHER of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the best three photographs capturing the big incidents in sporting activities. For this category you must submit both the photo and the newspaper page it appeared in (with the date visible).

To qualify photographs must be for Scottish publications or portraying a Scottish affair for a non-Scottish print or online publication.

2. NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER of the Year SPONSORED BY:

Winner and Runner Up

For the best three photographs capturing the essence of news stories; the pictures that are worth a thousand words. For this category you must submit both the photo and the newspaper page it appeared in (with the date visible).

To qualify photographs must be for Scottish publications or portraying a Scottish affair for a non-Scottish print or online publication.

3. CARTOONIST of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the best three cartoons/cartoon strips, which appeared in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. For this category you must submit a copy of the original cartoon/cartoon strip as well as a copy of the cutting to show how (and when) the cartoon appeared in the publication.

4. YOUNG JOURNALIST of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the three best articles, news stories or single planned series of articles or news stories by a journalist aged 25 at the time of publication, appearing in any print or online newspaper or magazine. Any series submitted should not exceed three articles. Please enter your date of birth on the entry form.

5. WEEKLY NEWSPAPER of the Year SPONSORED BY:

Winner and Runner Up

For the three best non-consecutive issues of a local weekly or bi-weekly newspaper published during the year. Sunday newspapers and weekly magazines are excluded from this category. Please note: in this category, 3 copies of each of the 3 issues are required and they must be sent in as hard copies (i.e. 9 copies in total).

6. ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the best three articles or single planned series of three articles which appeared in any print or online newspaper during the year. This category is open to all journalists writing in the following subject areas – show business, television, radio, theatre, music, film, books, critiques, reviews and any other arts/entertainment subject not covered by these headings. Interviews must be entered in the Interviewer of the Year category (below).

7. INTERVIEWER of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the three best interviews appearing in any newspaper, magazine or online publication during the year. Entries must feature three interviews with different subjects and can come from any section of the publication, including business and sport.

8. POLITICAL JOURNALIST of the Year SPONSORED BY:

Winner and Runner Up

For the three best political stories, or one series of political stories, which appeared in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

9. COLUMNIST of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the three best articles written by a columnist in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. A maximum of three articles should be submitted in this category.

10.FINANCIAL/BUSINESS JOURNALIST of the Year SPONSORED BY:

For the three best articles or single planned series of articles which appeared in any one online or digital newspaper or magazine during the year. This category is open to all journalists writing in the following subject areas – business, industry, technology and financial affairs. Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

11.FEATURE WRITER of the Year SPONSORED BY:

Winner and Runner Up

For the three best general feature articles or single planned series of three general feature articles appearing in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year.

12.SPORTS FEATURE WRITER of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the three best sports features which appeared in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. Where an entry involves a series of features, entries should not exceed three articles.

13.SPORTS NEWS WRITER of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the three best sports news stories, or one series of news stories, on any one topic which appeared in any one print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

14.INNOVATION of the Year SPONSORED BY:

Winner and Runner up

For the most innovative digital project or print initiative which made a significant contribution to the title’s development. Three examples demonstrating its impact should be submitted and entries can be from a team or individual.

15.FRONT PAGE of the Year SPONSORED BY:

Winner and Runner Up

For the front page making the most impact taking into account headline, photographs and presentation. The award is intended to recognise the work of production journalists. One front page only per publication should be submitted in this category.

16.JOURNALISM TEAM of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the best story or series of stories appearing in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. The award will be presented to a number of journalists contributing to the story or series of stories. Entries in this category are limited to a maximum of six articles. Please give your story/series of stories a name on the entry form.

17.CAMPAIGN of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the best campaign printed in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. Entries in this category are limited to a maximum of six articles per subject. Entries must represent the range and scope of the campaign and should highlight aspects such as reader involvement. This award will be made to one journalist or a number of journalists contributing to a campaign. Please name your campaign on the entry form.

18.SCOOP of the Year SPONSORED BY:

Winner and Runner Up

For the best exclusive story which created the greatest impact appearing in any print or online newspaper or magazine during the year.

19.REPORTER of the YearWinner and Runner Up

For the three best news stories, or one series of news stories, on any one topic, which appeared in any one print or online newspaper or magazine during the year. Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.
