Lesson SessionFantastic Creature Tile 1

EngageIntroduce Challenge: Create a relief tile containing a fantastic creature, which expresses multiple aspects of your personality.Fun activity: In groups of 4, students will create collaborative a crazy creature, by blindly combining parts from 4 different animals.

-First: Instruct each students to write their name at the top of an 8.5 x 11 paper, then fold paper in half (hamburger) then half again, (hotdog) so each student has a paper with 4 horizontal segments.1. Ask each student to quickly think of an animal which might represent them, (or supply

animal ideas to each table in a grab bag.)2. Beginning at the top with the head, and then concealing each segment successively,

students pass their papers around the table until all 4 parts on all 4 papers are complete. Example: 1) head, 2) upper extremities and abdomen, 3) hips and tail, 4) legs and feet.

3. Unfold at the end to reveal 4 crazy composite creatures. Return each paper to original student.

Ask students, how it has changed? It has been transformed by the ideas and perceptions of other people… How do others see us, compared to how we see ourselves?

Show PPT: Challenge, planning prompts, overview of steps. Discuss the use of positive and negative space and the arrangement and pose. Note the use of pattern, high and low relief,

DevelopExplain that in making a fantastic creature tile, they will explore perceptions of truth in advertising. When products are sold, an image or brand is created, in order to persuade consumers to buy it.

How do people see you? Is their perception the whole story? Do you have more than one side?

We are all complex, with many sides to our personalities. How would you represent the whole you, in the form of a fantastic creature?

Show student some relief tiles that they can handle. Ask students what they see? What areas are raised with additive methods or recessed with subtractive methods? Discuss how they might include a border.CreateToday students will brainstorm ideas for their fantastic creature tile:

1. Using the graphic organizer, they will select 3 traits they want to use to inspire their creature. Ex: Friendly, outgoing, quiet, thoughtful, creative, etc.)

2. Draw 3 animals to signify each trait.3. Sketch 3 fantastic creatures, using various animal parts in different combinations.

Create final design: Students choose one creature to enlarge on 6 in square paper.

ReflectNext time we will begin hand building the ceramic tiles. What areas of your creature will be in relief or carved into the clay? Think about how you might pose your creature on you tile…

Share with a partner 3-2-1. Three personality traits you want to show or advertise. Two ideas for your design. One place you might display your tile when its finished.

Lesson SessionFantastic Creature Tile 2

EngageRestate and post challenge: Create a relief tile containing a fantastic creature, which expresses multiple aspects of your personality.

Show this 3-minute tile forming video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ekN8X0KYkY Have students trace their design on a 6 in square of tracing paper.

Review and post Challenge and GoalsProject Goals:Your ceramic relief tile should:

Express multiple aspects of your personality through a fantastic creature/monster. Be in relief, including additive and subtractive processes. Include at least 3 ceramic hand-building techniques Include texture and detail Exhibit good technical skills and craftsmanship Be well glazed, i.e. (not too much, not too little)

Intro clay safety and techniques: Reinforce importance of safe handling of needle tool with clear consequences. Discuss minimizing clay dust; wiping hands/table with damp paper towel. Intro steps and clay techniques.

DevelopDemo: Rolling slab and transferring image.

Place the slab onto a canvas or cardboard base, or directly on the table. To make the tile: Roll a ½ thick slab, trim to 6 inch square using paper as a guide. Lay tracing paper drawing on slab, and place clear plastic over tracing paper, so it doesn’t

tear. Use the pointed end of wooden clay tool to draw design; remove tracing paper and plastic. Begin carving away negative space, saving the clay under a moist towel to add raised

details. Students may add coils or other shape to create raised areas. Always remember to score,

slip and smooth when joining forms.

CreateBegin hand-building their fantastic creature tiles.

ReflectStudents should have basic forms executed.

Mid-point check: Remind students to refer to their sketch when forming their fantastic creature tiles. Review the project goals. Is and well formed? Is your creature in low relief with additive and subtractive areas?

Next time we will add surface decoration and pierce a hole for hanging.Place tiles in plastic bags. Label the bag with name and code using a Sharpie.

EngageHands-on: Pass around glazed tiles fro students to examine.Today is the last day to model your relief tilesReview Project Goals:Your ceramic relief tile should:

Express multiple aspects of your personality through a fantastic creature/monster. Be in relief, including additive and subtractive processes. Include at least 3 ceramic hand-building techniques Include texture and detail Exhibit good technical skills and craftsmanship Be well glazed, i.e. (not too much, not too little)

DevelopRefer to Clay Steps Poster for additive and subtractive techniques andthe 4 “S”s of joining clay; score, slip, seal (weld) and smooth.

What kinds of texture or details do you still need to make?Demonstrate incising and impressing to create texture and pattern.

CreateStudents will finish and refine their fantastic creature tiles.Add surface decoration and details.Smooth rough spots and assure work is well crafted.

Cover finished tiles loosely with plastic bags to begin the drying process. Make sure student names are etched on the back.

Make sure you have pierced a hole for hanging.

Reflect

Pair share: Share with a partner the techniques you used to make your tile. Then circle on the techniques checklist.

Lesson SessionFantastic Creature Tile 4

EngageAt a later date, after bisque firing.

Your works have been through the first firing and are ready for glaze.Who knows what stage is that called? (…bisqueware or bisque fired)

Hands-on: Show successful and unsuccessfully glazed work. Discuss glazing do’s and don'ts.Review to see what students remember about glazing techniques from previous experience.

Colors look different in the jar than they do after firing.Show fired sample tiles to remind them.

DevelopModel glazing a bisqueware tile.

Student will decide on a single color choice. What material would you like to imitate? (stone, neutral color or other choice.)

Demonstrate brushing glaze on completely, looking for any missed spots. Demonstrate wiping excess glaze off the bottom with a wet sponge. Two coats will result in complete coverage, a shiny, colorful finish. The back of the object should NOT be glazed or it will stick to the kiln shelf.

Students should use paper underneath to minimize mess.

CreateStudents glaze their grotesques according to the steps modeled above.

Well glazed (not too much, not too little) Have questions? Ask a partner for help Double check for missed spots Dab to get into carved/incised areas Use one color at a time Carry carefully to designated area when finished.

ReflectAsk students to write their artist statement.Students can use the techniques checklist to refresh their memory about making the tile.

What clues about your personality are shown in your fantastic creature tile? What qualities make your fantastic creature tile well crafted?Where might you display this ornamental tile to advertise your strengths?
