In 2017 the conference is coming to the historic plantation city of Derry in Northern Ireland. A major Atlantic Port, Derry was the point of embarkation for many thousands of Irish emigrants heading to colonial North America before the 19 th century. Yet it retained strong Canadian connections after that. We seek papers covering from any aspect of any discipline within Irish Studies. We also hope to have a strand which expressly addresses the interconnections between Canada and Ulster, whether historical, literary, artistic or performative. The conference will feature a walking tour of the city walls, music, drama, and recitals. We will complete the events with a gala dinner in the heart of the historical walled city of Derry. We wish to encourage papers in English, French and Irish, supported by a booklet of abstracts that will be in English. Confirmed Keynote Speakers: Professor Donald Harman Akenson, Queen’s University, Canada. Professor Danine Farquarson, Memorial University, Canada. Professor Margaret Kelleher, University College Dublin. Professor Máirín Nic Eoin, Dublin City University.

Connections and Reconnections in Irish StudiesAnnual Conference, 27-30 June 2017

Ulster University, Magee Campus, Derry, UK

CAIS conferences are wide-ranging interdisciplinary events which provide an exciting meeting place for scholars, artists, writers, and performers. In 2017 the conference is coming to the historic plantation city of Derry in Northern Ireland. A major Atlantic Port, Derry was the point of embarkation for many thousands of Irish emigrants heading to colonial North America before the 19th century.

Confirmed Keynote Speakers:Professor Donald Harman Akenson, Queen’s University, Canada.

Professor Danine Farquarson, Memorial University, Canada.Professor Margaret Kelleher, University College Dublin.

Professor Máirín Nic Eoin, Dublin City University.

Please send, by 16 December 2016, proposals for individual papers or panels (three papers plus chair) to [email protected] Proposals should include: title, 250-word abstract for each paper submitted, and correspondence details, including an email address.

About the Canadian Association for Irish StudiesThe Canadian Association for Irish Studies has been serving students of Irish culture for over thirty years, seeking to foster and encourage the study of Irish culture in Canada. It also works to encourage young scholars and develop the next generation of Irish studies enthusiasts as well as support discussion of current issues in Irish studies and culture through conferences, publications, and online resources. CAIS brings together all those who are committed to the promotion of Irish culture in Canada. Members of CAIS can be found in every province and territory of Canada. Members also come from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Britain, the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. For the first time, CAIS is meeting in Northern Ireland, and we are welcoming them to Derry/Londonderry, the historic plantation city and major port of Canadian emigration.

Please consider joining what will be a major international event.
