What characteristics of globalization do you think are the most important?

IntroductionThere are many characteristics of globalization that are important. Globalization is the process by which the world’s citizens are becoming increasingly connected and interdependent. After consideration, it is clear that the three most important characteristics of globalization are (1) foreign aid, (2) global warming, and (3) mobility.

Characteristic One: Foreign AidThe first characteristic that is important to globalization is foreign aid. Foreign aid is money, food, or other resources given to one country from another. The 2004 South East Asian tsunami is one example that shows the importance of foreign aid. The earthquake that caused the tsunami and a series of other tsunamis killed over 200,000 people and was one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. In response to the disaster, the worldwide community donated over $14 billion in humanitarian aid. This aid went to food, housing, and rebuilding. Therefore, it is clear that foreign aid is an important characteristic to globalization.

Characteristic Two: Global WarmingThe second characteristic that is important to globalization is global warming. Global warming is the increase in temperature around the world. It has been caused because of an increase in pollution in the atmosphere. This

pollution was created in areas all around the world and now, these temperature changes have affected environments and animals around the world. Glaciers are melting, which is causing the sea level to rise and low lying areas to flood. Animals have also been affected, as the species such as penguins and polar bears lose their glacier climates. Problem animals, such as the pine beetle, have moved into new, warmer areas (such as Alberta) where they have caused agricultural issues. Therefore, it is clear that global warming is an important characteristic of globalization.

Characteristic Three: MobilityThe third characteristic that is important to globalization is mobility. Mobility is the ability to move freely and easily. It has been important as globalization has encouraged countries to allow people to move freely between them. For example, the creation of the European Union allowed people in over 20 European countries to move freely between each country. Therefore, it is clear that mobility is an important

ConclusionIn conclusion, there are many characteristics of globalization that are important. Clearly, the three most important characteristics of globalization are (1) foreign aid, (2) global warming, and (3) mobility.

Example

What do each of the three sources communicate about globalization? Considering the sources, what do YOU think? Should a country embrace globalization?

In source one there is a photograph of three boys “Mining in the Congo.” The boy, whose face you can see, is clearly in pain and he looks dirty and sore. The three boys are sitting in the mud while they are mining and they look hot. Looking deeper at the details in the source, it is clear they are mining for minerals in Africa, as the Congo is a country in Africa. Many minerals that the Global North uses (such as coltan) are found in African countries and many workers are used in unfair labour conditions to mine the minerals. This source links to globalization because the international demand for these minerals has caused the three boys to be put in these unfair labour conditions. We have learned about the poor mining conditions in the Congo in our social studies class and they are because of globalization and the increased demand for minerals around the world, and the fact that companies don’t want to pay a lot to their workers so they can make as much money as possible.

In source two, there is a logo for the United Nations. It is blue, has olive branch leaves at the side, and has a picture of the world in the middle. Looking deeper at the details in the source, it is clear that this logo supports globalization. Olive branches are symbols of peace and by having a picture of the world in its logo, it is clear that the United Nations supports globalization. The United Nations was formed after WWII to try and prevent any future world wars. It has a number of purposes, but we have learned in our social studies class that the biggest purpose of the United Nations is to promote and encourage world peace through economic, social, and political means.

In source three, there is a cartoon of two men. The man on the right has a large rock on his back labelled, “Debt 52% of GNP” and looks to be an indigenous person. The man on the left is wearing a suit and is saying, “IMF is working to eliminate poverty.” Looking deeper at the details in the source, it is clear that this cartoon is trying to be funny. While the man on the left is saying that the IMF is trying to reduce poverty, the man on the right shows that the IMF really hasn’t done anything to reduce his debt. We have learned in our social studies class that the IMF (International Monetary Fund) is part of the United Nations and even though it tries to encourage economic globalization, it has really caused economic problems for a lot of Global South countries and indigenous people through Structural Adjustment Programs.

Considering these sources, I think that a country should moderately embrace globalization because there are some benefits to it – like encouraging world peace and allowing people to move beyond their borders and experience new cultures. For example, how people have been able to move and experience new cultures easily because of the European Union However, there are some drawbacks to it too – like the exploitation of people and countries in the Global South due to Structural Adjustment Programs. Therefore, I think that a country should moderately embrace globalization because there are some good things, but also some bad things about it.

Writing Assignment #3 (the opinion essay)

What is it?

Writing Assignment #3 is an essay about an issue. You are given three opinions about that issue and are asked to provide your own opinion about that issue. That question may be quite intimidating but you need to look beyond the specifics and connect to the broader elements of Social Studies you have learned this year. You will have 45 minutes to complete the writing assignment and it should be approximately two pages (double spaced).

Social 10-2Writing Assignment III

Your local newspaper asked three citizens selected at random to respond to the following question:How should we respond to globalization to help create sustainable prosperity?

Citizen IGlobalization provides the only hope for improving the living conditions of many of the world’s people by providing jobs and improved living conditions. A free market in Canada and around the world is essential to ensure that more and more people gain the benefit from globalization that we in Canada have secured.

Citizen IIIt is clear that our world, if it is to survive, requires a coordinated effort from all levels of government, all corporations and all international organizations. We should support any individual, company or government that is serious about improving global prosperity. Our world is so interconnected today that we must work together to continue to improve sustainable prosperity.

Citizen IIIIf we do not have the government place controls on the conduct and practices of multinational corporations, sustainable prosperity for all is not possible. Companies are in business to make a profit, and history has shown us that the profit motive overrides concerns about employees, the environment, and citizens of countries where companies operate. We must regulate any company that ignores proper wages and working conditions, harms the environment, or does not contribute to improved prosperity, and require them to meet international standards.

What do YOU think? Considering the citizens’ opinions, how should we respond to globalization to help create sustainable prosperity?

EXAMPLE

We must regulate any company that ignores proper wages and working conditions, harms the environment, or does not contribute to improved prosperity, and require them to meet international standards.

What do YOU think? Considering the citizens’ opinions, how should we respond to globalization to help create sustainable prosperity?

The issue of how we should respond to globalization to help create sustainable prosperity is complex. This complexity can be seen in the varying opinions that connect to the issue. Citizen One thinks that trade liberalization is the only answer for global economically improvement, Citizen Two thinks working with other nations (cooperation) is the answer for sustainable prosperity, and Citizen Three thinks that multinational corporations need to be controlled to allow sustainable prosperity. Upon exploration, I think that I agree with Citizen Three – we should respond to globalization by regulating multinational corporations to ensure sustainable prosperity. This is because multinational corporations’ number one goal is profit and that often comes at the expense of the environment, labour conditions, and the economic wellbeing of Global South countries.

14

Page 16: sharekfx.weebly.comsharekfx.weebly.com/.../8/6/6/3/86639606/writing_guide…  · Web viewWriting Assignment #1 is a short, one-page paper that asks you to show your understanding

The first reason why I think that multinational corporations need to be regulated to create sustainable prosperity is because they have a history of exploiting the environment. One example of this can be seen in the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta has a large supply of oil, and large multinational corporations (such as Shell) ruined the environment in order to access the oil. Therefore, it is clear that multinational corporations need to be regulated to create sustainable prosperity.

The second reason why I think that multinational corporations need to be regulated to create sustainable prosperity is because they have a history of exploiting workers. In the 1990s, it came out that Nike was using sweatshops to build their shoes. Since then, it has come out that a variety of multinational corporations use unfair working conditions to improve their profits. For example, a factory in Bangladesh collapsed in 2013, killing numerous people and exposing the terrible working conditions they were under. Therefore, it is clear that multinational corporations need to be regulated to create sustainable prosperity.

The third reason why I think that multinational corporations need to be regulated to create sustainable prosperity is because they have a history of damaging the economic wellbeing of Global South countries. One of the early multinational corporations – the British East Indian Company – crushed the Indian economy when it started heavily trading in textiles with the country, and then quickly stopped under instruction of the British government, who was trying to protect its own cotton industry. This sudden increase and then decrease in cotton demand destroyed the Indian economy and led to lasting, disastrous effects. Therefore, it is clear that multinational corporations need to be regulated to create sustainable prosperity.

In conclusion, the issue of how we should respond to globalization to help create sustainable prosperity is complex.
