BlockworkGenerally a block is manufactured with an open texture or a designed key for rendering.Relying on the raking of mortar joints is not sufficient to provide the key alone.Smooth dense blocks with little mechanical key should have the key enhanced by anapplication of weber.rend aid stipple coat. The strength and density of the blockwork should be assessed in regard to itscompatibility with the proportion of cement content of the chosen rendering. Lowdensity blockwork such as Aerated Autoclaved in some cases may not be compatiblewith a render mix having a cement:lime:sand ratio stronger than a 1:1:6 for example.Block manufacturers can advise on the recommended mortar/render strengths for thechosen block. Strength or classification of renders is detailed in the individual productliterature in Section 10 of the Weber render solutions handbook.

ConcreteConcrete offers minimal suction and generally insufficient key for the rendering toadhere. The aggregate should be exposed during construction of the concrete, or afterthe concrete has cured by the use of bush hammering or other suitable mechanicalmeans. Alternatively, the concrete should be coated with a weber.rend aid to providekey for the subsequent render application. No-fines concrete will provide a satisfactorykey. Please note that advice should be sought regarding concrete curing agents thatmay interfere with the bond of the weber.rend aid application.

BrickworkTo provide key, new brickwork should be laid with the mortar joint recessed 10 – 12 mmby width and depth squarely.Existing brickwork will require the joints raking back to the above dimensions. If thejoint is too hard, the key should be provided by a stipple coat of weber.rend aid. Some common bricks may contain deleterious sulphate salts. If possible, advice shouldbe sought from the brick manufacturer regarding their use as a substrate for renderingin that location, particularly in high exposure or potentially damp areas.

The substrate should be constructed of durable and moderately strong materialsspecifically designed to receive modern renders. They should be clean, suitably dry, sound and free from anything that mayinterfere with the adhesion, such as oil, grease, organic matters and soluble salts.

StrengthThe substrate should bedesigned andconstructed so that itadequately supports andrestrains the rendering. The substrate, includingany joints in masonry, should be no weakerthan the renderingmaterial used.

SuctionGood adhesion of acement render is greatlyreliant on the suction inthe substrate. Excessivesuction will impair thehydration of the renderingand therefore affect itsbond with the substrate. On the other extreme, lowsuction substrates will notoffer sufficient capillaryaction to gain a goodbond.

KeyFor the background togive support it mustprovide an open orpreformed texturedsurface to allow therender material topenetrate and promoteaggregate interlockbetween the render andthe substrate.

An application of weber.rend aid will deter sulphates from crystallising and impairingthe bond of the render.

Suction controlSuction control, particularly when using lower density block, should be achieved byspraying the wall with an even mist of clean water prior to rendering. If there are acombination of issues, such as varying suction or insufficient key in addition to highsuction, then an application of weber.rend aid is recommended. Please note that mist spraying with water should be done in a controlled manner inorder to avoid saturating the blockwork. Excessive watering will increase dryingshrinkage and can induce cracking in the block. Any such cracking is likely to bereflected in applied materials.

Weber renders are manufactured from carefully selected and graded aggregatesto minimise drying shrinkage of the applied render. Providing that goodpractice, appropriate design and suitable preparation is undertaken, therendering will be fully bonded to the substrate and restrained from movementby that surface and will not crack. It is therefore most important thatstress/crack control is considered prior to construction of the substrate in orderto reduce the likelihood of cracking. When the construction is correctly divided into appropriate panels separated bysuitable movement joints, the stresses caused by drying shrinkage and normalbuilding movement will dissipate to the detailed relief joints. Movement jointsare not a requirement in the render alone as this is fully bonded to thesubstrate. They should however, reflect and follow through from the relief jointsdetailed in the construction.

Movement jointsGuidance on the placement of movement joints should be gained from the specifiedblock manufacturer and used in conjunction with the BS EN 1996-2:2006 Code ofpractice for use of masonry and BS 6093:2006 Code of practice for design of jointsand jointing in building construction. The guidance given in these standards is that joints should usually be included at 6m intervals and 3 m from corners, however, this will vary depending upon the type ofconstruction and the strength of the brick or block.

Mortar bedding joint reinforcementThe exact spacing of joints can be adjusted by the use of mortar bedding jointreinforcement. The amount and positioning of this reinforcement should be detailedby the block manufacturer. In Weber’s experience cracking of the substrate can beconsiderably minimised if mortar bedding joint reinforcement is used, specifically:

The render’s ability to distribute and resiststresses can be enhanced by the inclusionof glass fibre reinforcement mesh cloth atpositions of localised high stress i.e. at thecorners of openings, at junctions ofdiffering materials or around crackinducers such as weep holes. For moredetail regarding the inclusion of meshplease refer to best practicerecommendations in Section 9 of theWeber render solutions handbook.Straight line cracking that can sometimesbe seen in completed render panels isnot typical of render failure, butrather the reflection of a crack in thesubstrate. Stress/crack control mustbe given serious consideration priorto construction.

Technology that makescurrent skilled personnelmore productive is a distinctadvantage. A machineapplication does just that.Tradesmen applyingexternal renders must to befree to apply their skills tocompleting wall areas, notlabouring to carry or hoistmixed material to the placeit is needed. Modernmachinery not only mixesand conveys the wetmaterial in just such a waybut also even applies it tothe wall so that tradespeople have the opportunityto use their levelling andfinishing skills to the full.

Sprayed roughcast finishes are made possible only with the machineapplication approach where panels are applied and finished within hours ofstarting - truly the fast track method of modern rendering. The UK and Irishmarket has been very traditional in approach and it has taken many yearsfor a technology that is widely accepted on the continent to be adopted here. The pioneers though have now established the principles and more andmore of Weber’s recommended applicators have made machine applicationthe very core of their businesses.

The building industry is the most dangerous work environment bar none.Much effort has been put into improving the generally dismal historicalrecord. As a responsible manufacturer Weber is constantly reformulatingproducts to reduce possible risks to users and clearly states what risks areinvolved with all products. These risks only apply during application. Oncecured, the products are non-hazardous in all respects. All materials carryHealth and Safety labelling in a clear easily recognisable format asrecommended by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive).

LiftingEven when labelled as non-hazardous, a practical, common senseapproach to material usage is to be recommended. Weber materialsmanufactured in the UK are kept to weights of 25kg and below wherepossible. Lifting should be carried out with the back straight and uprightwith the load as close to the body as possible. Do not to cut corners byattempting to carry multiple packs above 25kg.

Cement basedThe HSE has identified the small amount of soluble Chromium VI thatnaturally appears in grey ordinary Portland cement as the element thatstimulates an allergic dermatological reaction in some people that resultsin ‘cement burns’. Legislation now requires manufacturers to keep levelsof soluble chromium VI below 2 parts per million of the total dry weightof the cement content.White cement/sulphate-resisting cement and cement fondu all havecontents below this level and are naturally compliant.Ordinary Portland cement however needs to be treated to achieve theselevels. All material supplied by Weber is either naturally compliant or hasbeen treated to be compliant for the stated shelf life. Bags must be storedunopened, in clean dry conditions, off the ground and above 5°C. Use oftreated products after the end of the declared storage period mayincrease the risk of an allergic reaction.Cementitious mixes may contain relatively sharp, often angularaggregates and are therefore generally abrasive when wet. Newly appliedproduct is also very alkaline.
