Modern production machines for the processing and converting of web-type materials (for instance in the printing industry), work at speeds which were unimag-inable only a few years ago. However this development must not be made at the expense of product quality. No company can afford the waste resulting from even minimum deviations from the default web position.

BST web guiding systems ensure precise web feed for a wide range of materials in all kinds of production pro-cesses. Waste and down times are kept to a minimum. Make full use of your machine speed – we will make sure that everything is kept in line.

I am always being asked why web guiding is necessary.

Webs of material guided by rollers tend to move sideways off the correct track. Among other things this leads to print no longer appearing where it should and to webs not being rewound accurately.

This is where web guiding comes into play. It keeps the material in a defined position and guarantees an exact input feed into the production process even at highest processing speeds.

To summarize: web guiding ensures an accurate running of the web where it would otherwise wobble and shake.

On the following pages you can find all the components which you need for a wide range of requirements.

Types of guiding

The type of guiding is dependent on the degree of web processing. Untreated webs can only be guided to the web edge or web center- line, as there are no other contrasting characteristics available. Finished webs, on the other hand, offer more possibilities, for instance printed lines or other freely selectable contrasts. The scanning of the web position is made using analogue or digital sensors.

The BST control circuit

The scope and level of automation of web guiding sys-tems differ from application to application. Regardless of this, every guiding system can be reduced to the principle of the simple closed control circuit.

The starting point is the current position of the web of material.

The guiding device corrects the position of the web of material precisely and without any delay.

One or more sensors scan the actual posi-tion of the web and transmit this informa-tion to the commander.

The commander compares the actual po-sition measured to the specified desired value. If there is a difference it transmits a correction signal to the guiding device.

Web edge guiding

Guiding to the left or right web edge using one edge sensor.

Web center-line guiding

Guiding to the web center-line using two edge sensors.

Contrast guiding

Guiding to a continuous or interrupted printed line or contrast edge.

The ekrPro family of digital commanders combine a compact design and an innovative CAN bus architec-ture with a simple operation.

Totaleaseofuse

All members of the ekrPro family are characterised by their ease of installation and their clearly arranged control elements. After selecting the connected components (sensors, actuator, etc.) in the Set-Up menu all relevant control parameters are automatically adjusted. In this way only the control function (automatic, manu-al or center position) and the guiding mode (guiding to the left or right web edge, web center-line guiding) need to be selected by the operator.

State-of-the-arttechnologyinthesmallestspace

The compact design of the commanders allows their direct installation onto/into the guiding device.

All-purposeapplications

The large number of components which can be con-nected guarantees an optimum adjustment to your individual requirements. All commanders have connec-tions for various kinds of sensors (ultrasonic, infrared, line and reflection sensors as well as CCD cameras) and actuators with different performance levels (with and without position feedback).

Networking

The commanders within the ekrPro family are fitted with a CAN bus interface as standard. This has the following advantages:

- Safe and quick data transfer

- Internal commander networking

- Connection to various bus systems via BST interface modules (external networking)

- Problem-free connection to superior systems (PLC or PC) via suitable gateways

ekrPro KeyExternal keyboard

The members of the ekrPro family:

ekrPro ComCommander with an integrated keyboard

ekrPro NetCommander without keyboard, for possibleapplications in places which are difficult to reach. It is operated using the ekrPro Com or an external ekrPro Key keyboard.

CommandersQuick and accurate signal processingfor perfect guiding results

Page 7: WebGuiding en 01

The commander is the central con-trol station of the web guiding system, comparable with the human brain.

So that the “brain”, or commander, can work correctly it requires information: What should the sensors be scanning, the web edge or some means of contrast? What is the correct position of the web which can be taken as a standard for the guiding process?

Once this information is stored the guid-ing process can start. The device re-

ceives the actual web position measured by the sensors and compares this

with the set value. If the com-mander recognises a deviation

from this standard it sends a correction signal to the actuator of the guiding device and the position er-ror is compensated.

A simple but powerful system!

The functions of this cost-effective commander are designed to meet the standard requirements of web guiding. This makes the ekr 500 particularly user- friendly, as the effort required for set-up and operation is minimal. The compact design of the commander and the detach-able operating keyboard allow easy use, even when installing in places on the machine which are difficult to reach. All relevant data, such as web position, sensor co-verage and position of the actuator, are graphical-ly displayed on the clear LC display.

Ultrasonic sensorsThe scanning of the web edge is carried out contact-less by ultrasonic waves.

SensorsThe right scanning systemfor each type of material

On the next two pages you will meet the eyes of our web guiding sys- tem - the sensors.Just as the human eye is continuously ob-taining information and passing it on to the brain, sensors continuously register the position of the web of material and transmit the relevant signals to the com-mander.Of course, while this is being done there can be no contact with the web, because otherwise this would lead to damage to the web edge or surface. The non-contact scanning is done with sensors which, for instance, can “see” using infrared light, ultrasonics or a light-sensitive CCD chip. The types shown here are completed by line and reflection sensors for the scan-ning of lines and contrast edges.Which sensor is used in which specific case depends on the material used, the area of application and the environmental condi-tions.

My colleagues would welcome the oppor-tunity to assist you.

Infrared sensorsNon-contact scanning of the web edge is carried out by infrared light.

PropertiesofBSTultrasonicsensors:

- Insensitive to dirt and changes in the transparency of the material

- No changes to the measured values through flutter of the web in the sensor scanning area

- Large proportional scanning band permits web center-line guiding even for relatively large web width variations

- Compensation for any interference which may be caused by external sound sources or other environmental influences

Areasofapplication:

- Materials with dust or fluff-like deposits

- Films with a variable level of transparency

- Light-sensitive materials

PropertiesofBSTinfraredsensors:

- Pulsed infrared light (insensitive to external light sources)

- No influence on the measurements by flutter of the web within the light path

- Automatic contamination message

- Optional connection for air-driven cleaning protects the lens against contamination from paper, dust or other contaminants

Areasofapplication:

- Transparent and non-transparent materials

- Thick materials

Page 9: WebGuiding en 01

Digital sensorsThe non-contact scanning of the web of material is carried out by detecting contrasts in light conditions. In doing this a CCD camera can recognise up to eight contrast transitions.

PropertiesoftheBSTdigitalsensors:

- Resolution of up to 30,000 pixels by a micro- processor controlled CCD chip

- Adaptation of the viewing range to the specific application by selecting from a range of different lenses

- Adjustment of the camera parameters as a result of the change of material parameters with the machine running (no changeover time required)

- Quick set-up and camera alignment via an integrated graphic display

- Simple operation using standard integrated automatic functions (for example, the removal of interfering contrasts, compensation for contamination, white balance, and storage of the set-up values)

- The production and adjustment parameters can be transmitted more quickly and more securely by networking via the BST bus system

Areasofapplication:

Because of its large scanning area the CCD camera is particularly suitable for:

- Digital scanning of web edges, printed edges or printed lines

- Web center-line guiding

- Web width measurement

- Control of tools or other machines (for example, tracing of cutting knives, etc.)

Electric-motor-driven actuators

Electric-motor-driven actuators are used where very quick reaction to changes in the web positi-on are required. The actuator can be connected both directly to the commander or via a module (for high actu-ating forces). The ready-to-fit design means that assembly is quick and cost-efficient, in particular where retrofitting to existing equipment.Where there is little space for fitting we offer actuators with a space-saving design.

PropertiesoftheBSTelectric-motor-drivenactuators:

- Wear-resistant DC motors for low and medium-range actuating forces

- AC motors for high actuating forces (connection via a power module)

- Ball screw spindle drives with a minimum of axial play and high durability

- Designed for curved and linear correcting movements

- Various combinations of actuation paths, force and speed are possible

- Available with and without position feedback (precise register of the current position of the actuator)

- Maintenance-free

ActuatorsHigh-performance position control, flexible areas of application

Hydraulic actuators

Hydraulic actuators are suitable for medium to high actuating forces due to their sturdy design. They can also be used in hazardous areas. They are most commonly used for the movement of heavy masses, for example for the direct control ofunwinding and rewinding units in reel slitters andlaminating systems.Hydraulic actuators consist of a supply unit and a hydraulic cylinder.

PropertiesofBSThydraulicactuators:

- Designed for curved and linear correcting movements

- Adjustment of cylinder diameter and stroke to the required actuating force and speed

- Use of hydraulic cylinders from leading international manufacturers

Page 11: WebGuiding en 01

11

Now I would like to introduce you to the muscle which gets the corrective process moving – the actuator.Using its power it “moves” the guiding device into the position determined by the commander.

The movement can be made both by using an electric-motor-driven or hydraulic actuator. The critical factor for the selection of the actuator is the actuating force required.A further criterion is the environment in which the web guiding system is intend-ed to be used.

In the rubber industry, for example, hy-draulic oil is not welcome, as it can chan-ge material properties. On the other hand, in explosion-proof areas, a hydrau-lic actuator is often preferred.

In this case advice is what it’s all about.Make use of the experience of my BST colleagues who will select the best solu- tion for your application.

Performance data

Use the actuators together with our guiding devices to cover a wide range of web guiding tasks. We offer electric-motor-driven actuators with actu-ating forces of 80 N to 9,900 N and a stroke of 20 mm to 350 mm in designs both with and without position feedback. The actuating forces of our hydraulic units range up to 20,000 N for varying strokes.

Rotating frame guide (DF)The BST rotating frame guide is comprised of a fixed lower frame and a rotating upper frame, whose pivot is located on the infeed of the web.An incoming web path error causes the upper frame to rotate around its pivot point to move the web of material into a defined position on the next guiding roller. This guiding device is used if the web path must be corrected within a short distance and a minimum of material stress. Further advantages are the variable installation positions and the low actuating forces re-quired. The BST rotating frame guide is thus partic-ularly suitable for web tension sensitive materials.

Functional principle of the rotating frame guide

Guiding DevicesPrecise correction of the web pathin any mounting position

On the previous page you met the muscle of our web guiding system. It moves the guiding device which is what I would now like to introduce you to. The guiding device is the “hand” which the web guiding system uses to make the physical corrections to the web path. It becomes active if the web position devi-ates from the set position. It corrects the web position, moved by the actuator until the desired position has been reached.

The following factors are critical for the selection of the most suitable guiding de-vice for your application:

- Web width- Web tension force- Material (permissible stress)- Available installation space on the machine

All types of BST guiding devices may of course be supplied in various sizes.

CompactGuide – Precisewebguidingwithminimalspace

Engineered for precise control of narrow webs in the label, packaging, and non-woven industries, the high-ly compact design of the CompactGuide allows for easy fit onto production machines with minimal space and effort. The controller and actuator of the compact web guide have been cleverly integrated into the housing to save space. Operation of the guide is done via the unique operator control panel. Mounted directly on the face of the CompactGuide housing in the standard configu-ration, it is easily removed and mounted on your ma-chine in the location best suited for the operator. The entire guide is engineered for fast installation with minimal effort. Install, connect, produce!

14

Functional principle of the swivel roll guide

Swivel roll guide (SF)The BST swivel roll guide consists of a fixed lower frame and a moveable upper frame, with one or two guiding rollers. The upper frame moves around an imaginary pivot located on the infeed side outside the guiding device. With incoming web path error, the guiding de-vice swivels out to the side and thus transfers the out-going web into a defined position on the next idler. The correction is already made in the infeed area. The functional principle of this guiding device requires adequate long infeed and exit paths.Swivel roll guides are used where installation space is limited, the required threading of the web does not allow the use of a rotating frame guide or where the web is continually drifting away to the side (integral correction).

Preferred fitting positions:

Page 15: WebGuiding en 01

15

Turning barThe turning bar is used wherever a 90° turn in the direction of the web is required, together with some adjustment of the web alignment. The turning bar is installed at an angle of 45° to both the infeed and outfeed direction of the web.The web winds itself around the turning bar 180° and leaves the guiding device at right-angles to the infeed position. To correct the web path at the same time the turning bar is moved across the outfeed direction (in other words in line with the infeed direction) according to the guiding signal. In order to avoid material stress BST turning bars can be supplied with an optional air connection which puts a protective air cushion between the turning bar and the web.

Controlled unwind and rewind guiding systemsAs a rule, material is delivered in rolls for the web processing industry. It is unwound for processing, fed through the production process and rewound at the end of the machine. During these processes there is often a lateral offset of the web, for example caused by lopsided winding or poorly adjusted rolls. BST unwind and rewind systems prevent this.

Controlled unwind guiding

In the unwind system the sensor is fitted on the machine frame and the desired web position is fixed from there. Movements in web position caused by lopsided unwinding are compensated for by an equivalent lateral displacement of the unwind stand. Thus the material is accurately fed into the machine.

Controlled rewind guiding

In the rewind system the sensor is located on the rewind stand and the desired position is fixed from there. The rewind stand is guided to follow the incoming web. As a result, rolls have straight edges.

16

If the position of the sensor is difficult to reach or if the sensing position has to be changed frequently due to varying web widths, a sensor positioning device (FVG) will take over the adjustment of the sensor posi-tion. Both automatic electric-motor-driven systems and manual positioning devices are available, depending on the requirements.

AccessoriesPractical add-onsfor special applications

Motorized sensor positioning

Sensor positioning device FVGPro 1/K; SP/K-1

The basic version of the motorized sensor positioning device enables easy positioning of one sensor. It is used for web edge guiding.

Sensor positioning device FVGPro 1/MK; SP/MK-1

This type allows the simultaneous positioning of two sensors. It is used for web center-line guiding with a fixed web center-line.The position of the sensors is adjusted by one common drive. The sensors are moved in a reverse motion sym-metrically to the center of the web.

Sensor positioning device FVGPro 2/MK

This sensor positioning device has two sensor attach-ments and two separate drives. In this way both sensors can be adjusted independently of each other. This unit is suitable for both web edge guiding and web center-line guiding. Web movement over the en-tire range is possible using synchronous drive control.Use is also recommended for eccentric (half) webs.

The electric-motor-driven systems are controlled either by the commander (FVGPro series) or by remote control (SP series). Using these systems either one or two sen-sors can be adjusted together or individually. Thanks to their compact design, the sensor positioning devices can be integrated directly into the guiding device.

So far I have shown you the individual components of a BST web guiding system and now I would like to present some products from our range of accessories.

Certain web guiding processes con-tinuously repeat themselves. Others vary from application to application. Our accessories, such as sensor position-ing devices or oscillation systems simplify

routine work, save time and help you optimize productivity and

quality.

Electronic remote precision adjustment (EFE)

Depending on the conditions surrounding the machine or the production demands, it may be necessary to adjust the web position far from the guiding device. The electronic remote precision adjustment allows the correction of the web position from any place on the machine.

EFE 1, analogue

Manual sensor positioning device

This cost-effective device permits the manual lateral adjustment of the sensor position for varying web widths. The sensitive and smooth positioning allows a correc-tion to the desired web position while the machine is running.

EFE 1000, digital

Oscillation

Oscillation enables the controlled lateral displacement of the web of material with an adjustable amplitude

(size of the movement) and frequency (speed of the movement). This functionality is either available

as the principle shown above, or by means of two independent moveable sensors with an

electronic overlay.Oscillation is mainly used for rewinding

of tubular films or for materials with an irregular thickness

profile in order to avoid poor winding.

Page 18: WebGuiding en 01

We have a number of special gateways available for connecting our web guiding systems to all common bus systems (CAN bus, EtherNet, Profibus-DP, DeviceNet). In this way we always have the suitable interface for integration of our web guiding system into your machine or control system.

Using the BST field bus you can obtain current data from the entire system at all times, since the time- critical process data are determined in real time.If it is integrated into the operational process, the BST field bus system provides a valuable support to existing quality assurance systems.
