1. Christians collected food (and probably money) as a regular part of the life of discipleship.

2. Christians used the ritual word offering for the Eucharist, and connected this with whole giving of their lives, including what they contributed to a collection of food and money.

A collection is distinct from an offering

“ Worship in the presentation of tithes and offerings, during or after which an Offertory may be rendered.”

The Doctrines and Disciplines of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1920, par. 72.

“Here, when convenient, may be sung an anthem: the offering also being received and reverently brought to the Minister, the congregation meantime rising; and it should be placed upon the Table with singing or prayer.”

The Doctrines and Disciplines of the Methodist Episcopal Church, 1932, par. 511.

Offering [The minister announces the offering with a standard line such as “Let us present our tithes and offerings to the Lord.”]Offertory [This may be a choral anthem. During the music, ushers come forward to receive the plates from the minister. They pass plates down pews moving toward the rear of the auditorium. Doxology [Congregation stands to sing as ushers process the plates to the front of the church and give the plates to the minister at the altar-table.]Prayer of Dedication [The minister turns to the table, lifts the plates, and says a prayer]

WHY SHOULD A COLLECTION

OF MONEY HAVE SO MUCH

RITUAL?
