Summer of Sam-mich

Happy Panini Month!

As the summer sun reaches its full, fiery glare, the time has finally come for us to cover my personal favorite food item in the tri-state: sandwiches. Some may call them boring, cliché, etc… Call them what you would like, but sandwiches, even more so than pizza or burgers are the culinary world’s truly blank canvas. There are no limits to the amount of personality and style that a sandwich can exude. It can be abstract, an open-faced mess with the most random ingredients you could ever dream of that you wouldn’t think would go together, but in reality, make the heart and palate sing. It can be still-life or realism, straight to the point, simple with no frills. A sandwich with few ingredients that have been done time and time before, but done in such a way that the flavor is so remarkable and consistent, it is a classic enjoyed for many, many years invincible to trend. Any way you choose, if you are a sandwich savant and you live in the tri-state, you are in luck, because we have a multitude of fine establishments in the area with some fantastic sandwiches. One in particular, I can recall from a past food review that really re-ignited my passion for all things sammich, was the Maine Attraction from Backstage Bar & Grill. I literally

could not get that thing out of my mind for days, and still crave it on a regular basis. Aside from applauding the fine folks at Backstage, inside this issue you will find several more eateries and their super sammies. On another note, summer entertainment has not slowed down a bit. This month has two festivals to keep the music fans out there content. The Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival on Henderson’s riverfront is your fix for all the pickin’ and jiggin’ you could ever want with many more wonderful events attached. The Big O’ Music Festival in Owensboro comes to court all the country boys and girls for a good ol’ time with Hank Williams Jr., the Charlie Daniels Band, Locash Cowboys and more. All of this, greats interviews, the newest edition of the Best of Bar Guide and so much more, inside 4U!

And yet, for over 45 years, this folk rock supergroup has weathered the storm with their love for music sti ll intact. You’ll hear all of your favorites as well as new material when CS&N play the Old Nati onal Events Plaza on August 19.

Aft er a two year break, the band is back together and back on the road, singing about what matt ers to them most: matt ers of the heart and mind. It’s why they’re sti ll relevant today, why hits like “Teach Your Children,” “Love the One You’re With” and “Our House” sti ll resonate. Ironically, the men who wrote these comforti ng, oft en philosophical songs that have helped millions of people deal with the complexiti es of life oft en struggled to communicate with each other. At any given ti me during their history, one or all of the members (Young included), were not speaking. It’s not enti rely surprising given their musical pedigrees and egos, but the fact that they’ve lived through such constant turmoil is nothing short of a miracle. Even a cursory read through Nash’s 2013 memoir, Wild Tales, reveals a band constantly on the brink with Crosby and Sti lls, in parti cular, seemingly courti ng death through rampant drug use. Perhaps that’s why nearly every permutati on of these three men has recorded together over the years (and that’s not taking into account Young’s involvement with separate members); self-destructi on tends to drive a wedge between people. And speaking of dividing people, CS&N conti nue to speak their minds politi cally. They’ve never shied from making bold statements, whether on record or on stage. In 2006, with Young in tow, the band quite famously embarked on the “Freedom of Speech” tour which included a rousing version of Young’s “Let’s Impeach the President.” The anti -Bush, anti -war ti rade tended to incite a percentage of the audience, prompti ng numerous walk-outs. But it was hardly the fi rst ti me a song by the band had sti rred

things up. In the late 60s/early 70s, protest songs like “Chicago” and “Ohio” refl ected the viewpoints of the counterculture and left litt le doubt as to their politi cal leanings. But regardless of the backstage batt les, personal failures and occasional fallout from band politi cs, CS&N sti ll make incredible music together – and not just the hits, either. They’re currently writi ng together with an eye on releasing a new album. It’s another small miracle in the history of one of the greatest groups of all ti me. Deservedly so, every member (Young included) has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice – once for CS&N and again for previous musical incarnati ons. No other band can claim such a disti ncti on. With that in mind, don’t miss this opportunity to hear three truly legendary voices in perfect harmony once again.

An ark of critt ers from kangaroos to monkeys, cats, and alligators

are coming to the Old Nati onal Events Plaza for an unscripted experience on the wild side. “It’s like standup comedy with animals,” explains Musial. “We call it educati onal entertainment because when the audience is having a blast, they don’t know they’re learning.” Musial and his creatures have been seen on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Today Show, iCarly and more. Hitti ng the road to tour the Midwest,

Musial says one of his favorite animal travelers is the bearcat, a species that “smells like hot, butt ered popcorn. Usually the van smells like poo, but when we have a bearcat with us, it smells like a movie theater.” According to Musial, to touch a bearcat when it is secreti ng its natural oily, greasy mixture, it smells like Fritos. Whether it’s being punted and knocked over by a kangaroo or losing a parrot in the raft ers, the unexpected nature of working with animals keeps Musial on his toes.

Tickets can be purchased through Old Nati onal Events Plaza’s Centre.evansvillegis.com or through Ticketmaster. Tickets start at $18 for reserved

seats and $33 for the VIP experience, including a post-performance photo with Jeff and one of the leading animals. A Family 4-Pack is available for $62.

Let the fur fl y! Jeff Musial, The Animal Guy herds his wild animal show to Evansville on Saturday, August 23 at 2 p.m. at the Aiken Theatre in the

Old Nati onal Events Plaza.

“They’re the worst actors,” claims Musial, since they never act on cue. One unlucky volunteer from the audience holding a boa constrictor got a surprise when he squeezed the tail and was doused in a “chocolate milkshake of one and two.” Musial promises no fl aming hoops or circus tricks. None of the animals are trained, and the performers exhibit natural behaviors. The stars of the shows - the animal ambassadors - are “hand-raised animals that I’ve raised since babies,” says Musial. These beasti es aren’t taken from the wild, but are usually babies abandoned by their mothers or born to a mother who couldn’t care for them. “They’re desensiti zed to the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs.’” The lights and noises are routi ne. “My monkey likes to people watch,” claims Musial, even if they’re people he is trying to avoid, like audience members wearing funny hats or broken glasses. “She’ll stare at it like, ‘dude, fi x your glasses.’” Musial was born with a passion for animals, “I was a zookeeper for Halloween unti l I was a senior in high school, maybe unti l a freshman in college.” Musial recalls how his high school class voted him most likely to appear on late night with deadly animals. He has visited The Tonight Show with host Jimmy Fallon on numerous occasions. Musial enjoys making the celebrity squirm as Fallon is forced through stunts like feeding Buff alo wings to a giant lizard on his desk, but Musial says the performances are strictly “shooti ng from the hip.” The Animal Guy’s show is appropriate “for anyone who likes to laugh and enjoys animals. Kids from 1 to 100.”

The Review: Best Italian BeefAhhh, back to the den we go! No matter what you’re in the mood for, you can pretty much bank on two things: one, Dave is gonna be there, and two, the food is gonna be tasty. Dave’s Sports Den, if you haven’t heard, is a family-owned and operated sports bar with family dining kinda joint, which has tons of local memorabilia. Odds are you’ll know a face or two, and maybe meet a few in the process. One of my favorite treats in town is their Italian Beef. Slow-cooked pot roast on house-made bread with true au Jus, tons of mozzarella, pepperoncini and toasted to crispy, yet with cloud-soft goodness, has brought myself and others many a wonderful meal. The roast is tender and very well-seasoned. It is soaked in its own juices, ensuring flavor, juiciness, and it leaves you wishing for another bite. So if you haven’t yet, isn’t it about time you experienced Dave’s Sportsden? (#stolentagline).

The Review: Best Submarine StyleFirehouse, while still fairly new to our area, has certainly made a spark, stemming from a long history of firefighters. These brave men and women need healthy, hearty and heaping foods on a regular, in order to provide we common folk a safety net whenever they get the call. This ideal has transformed into a new service: healthy, tasty and quick meals. Firehouse believes their steaming process – of the high quality meats and cheeses - unlocks the true flavors in their food. Then they pile on the accompaniments to round out a flaming good sub! No surprise the Hook & Ladder came through in the clutch. The smoked turkey and Virginia honey ham certainly took the stage, and I believe the steaming of the meats is truly the explanation. The Monterey Jack cheese and dressed veggies were quite good, but the meats drove this sub! Firehouse is all about their selection of hot sauces and tasty subs, but remembers to give back to the community. So, the only question that remains is, how are you gonna mix your coke (cause there’s a lot of options)?

The Review: Best Corned BeefIf you’re a Gerst Haus regular, then you’re most likely familiar with the genius of their Reuben sandwich. For those still in the dark, it’s time to get acquainted. But first, let’s remind everyone just what a pleasure it is to spend an evening at an authentic German establishment. Gerst Haus is known for giant fishbowls of Gerst Amber beer not to mention nearly 50 draughts and numerous imports. And their menu caters to both German and American food lovers with standouts like fresh Wiener schnitzel and fried catfish dinners. Still, no matter how you slice it, it’s tough to beat the Reuben sandwich. Served on delicious rye bread, the kick of the tender corned beef is matched by the tang of the sauerkraut and it’s all perfectly tempered by the sweetness of the thousand island sauce. There’s a wonderful balance of flavors, of tenderness and crunch. Stop in for a fishbowl and get to know the Reuben at Gerst Haus.

The Review: Best Pork Tenderloin Ahhh, Lamasco. Your sun-filled, Franklin Street facing, perfect little patio is such a treat. Your Three Floyd’s Gumball Head on tap has always brought us back. Bands and entertainment galore generally keep us to the wee hours of the morning. Thank the stars we can go take a nap, and come back for breakfast and Bloody Mary’s. But wait… your sandwiches are yet one more way for you to keep us under your crazy Franklin Street spell. Why would you use a gigantic pork tenderloin hand-breaded in Foster’s beer-infused batter as a centerpiece for a sandwich? Why would you also use seasoned flower in the batter? ‘Cause you are Lamasco, that’s why! Sidenote: this tender and crunchy, peppery and ever-so-tasty sammich is also available grilled. All you do is put out goodness, and your Pork Tenderloin Sandwich is no different. It’s just too much, but everything you do is, so thank you. Thank you as well for always providing outrageous amounts of fun. You and your Pork Tenderloin Sandwich are awesome!

The Review: Best Chicken (Breast)KC’s Time Out Lounge and the brand new KC’s Corner Pocket are already popular hangouts for the people of Evansville and the tri-state, but have you tried their Chicken Pesto Sandwich? If you are a chicken lover this is definitely the sandwich for you! At first it appears to be your standard chicken breast sandwich, but inside it is so much more. The chicken is piping-hot, tender, thick and juicy. The pesto sauce adds another dimension of flavor with its initial earthy and zesty taste and ends with a small spicy kick, provided by the roasted red peppers. The mozzarella cheese is definitely a player in the flavor of this sandwich as well, giving it a subtle smokiness. The toasted bun provides a nice crunch, in contrast with the tenderness of the meat. KC’s Chicken Pesto Sandwich is served with chips and a side which compliment the entrée nicely. Stop in and try their Chicken Pesto Sandwich today and stay for the party at night!

Hagedorn’s Tavern2037 W. Franklin St. Evansville, IN 47712 (812) 423-0794Find them on Facebook

The Review: Most UniqueThis place is a true original of Franklin Street. Originally, it was the gable-front home and business of Phillip Mundo. The building has called Franklin Street home for 131 years (89 as Hagedorn’s) and they have served up everything from hearty eats to frozen treats, warm beds to cold drinks. But nowadays, they offer plate lunches, a full bar, breakfast (starts at 6 a.m.), a family room, a Monday burger special, barbeque and more. But most importantly, you won’t leave hungry! This time around, Hagedorn’s has thrown a real curve ball. This sandwich is not for the faint of mind. The Brain Sandwich (pig, not cow) is so big it nearly bursts out of the bread that contains it. No need to be intimidated though, the brains are battered and fried to perfection. It is also extremely tender, and when teamed with the crunch of the pickle it is served with, it provides a very pleasant texture contrast. The name may send some running, but this is truly a tasty sandwich and it is clear why it is somewhat of a culinary tradition in the area.

The Review: Best Chicken (Deli-Style)I must admit, it had been quite some time since I had wondered into this locally-owned and operated sandwich spot. By the time I left, I began wondering what kept me away. Surely it wasn’t the fresh sliced meats, fresh daily cut veggies, or the fact that they crank out the house-made breads every morning. It wasn’t the people either, beings I was greeted, on the fly, with nothing but smiles and the owners’ valuable time. Well, the only thing it could be is my own foolishness, so let’s not let that happen again. Anyway, let’s get on track and talk about Schlotzky’s Fiesta Chicken Sandwich. Tender shaved chicken is nestled between cheddar cheese, roasted red peppers, lettuce, onion and tomato, black olives and chipotle mayo, topped and bottomed with the jalapeno cheese bread. Smokey, a lil’ sweet, with some spice, a well-rounded sandwich, what else is there to say, but mmm, mmm good! 18 years in operation, no grease in the joint, good peeps, and a Cinnabon option… C’mon, don’t make my mistakes!

The Review: Best Strom-StyleMost of us by now are familiar with Pizza King these days. From the wide selection of sandwiches and thin crust pies, seeing them on a delivery or stopping at one of their dine-in locations for an ice cold brew, they have been a household favorite for decades. So, if you dig the Stroms - and a ton of you do - why not break the pace and dig into a Texas Bar-B-Q? Pizza King’s own seasoned sausage blend is mounded on one half of their famous French style loaf, while a mozzarella-herb blend is piled on the other. Slap on a few diced onions and slather on their sweet and tangy BBQ sauce, baked until toasty, and go to town! Just make sure your napkin supply is abundant! Not a BBQ fan (I must ask myself how), no worries, the King has plenty more in store. You’re sure to find something fit enough for a… well… yeah, one of those.

Bagelrama off ers a variety of diff erent fl avored gourmet bagel sandwiches, but the Torta Loco bagel sandwich in parti cular is a winner if I do say so myself. As soon as you take a bite into this Mexican-inspired masterpiece you’re life my never be the same. The smoked citrus-marinated pulled pork mixed with the Chorizo Hash, Lime Pesto and spicy Chipotle Cream Cheese on top is enough to make your taste buds go LOCO people! Not to menti on the freshly-cut avocado and tomato added on just to give it that extra kick. Not much of a bagel lover? Not a problem! Bagelrama can make any sandwich on sliced wheat bread, Ciabatt a Roll, or as a wrap. Did I also menti on they had delicious salads and even a menu for Vegans, Vegetarians and of course, the kids! Don’t forget to choose between chips, pasta salad or soup as a side and make it a combo.

The Review: Most TenderThis place can certainly make a case for being the best casual sandwich place in Henderson. The attention to detail that goes into every unique creation on the menu has inspired a fast-growing fan base, hungry for wholly fresh pizzas, pastas, wonderfully tender wings and massive sammiches. We were treated to another irresistible signature item: the Authentic “Chicago-Style” Italian Beef Sandwich – served “wet” unless requested “dry,” with thinly-sliced Top Sirloin piled in an Italian sub roll. The beef was incredible! And it should be after being cooked in au jus sauce with a secret blend of spices for two-and-a-half to three hours. It was a messy sandwich so you might want to use a fork and knife, but it was very good. It came served with pepperoncinis and giardiniera, a blend of pickled veggies including jalapeños, cauliflower, olives, onions and carrots. The giardiniera provided a spicy crunch that complimented the juicy and savory beef.

The Review: Best French Onion DipHello, Highland Inn. Last time we had the pleasure was when we sampled your fantastically funky Bleu Cheese Burger. But then again, there are many reasons you should check out this new, old joint on a regular basis. The ceiling in the bar (you’ll see), the history and the locals are all great reasons to visit, but this modest restaurant owner is the real deal. A solid menu gives way to one hell of a French Onion Dip Sandwich. The sammy is served with a homemade au jus sauce which contains a secret recipe of spices and thyme. It took all of our willpower not to just drink the remaining sauce after we were finished. The flavor in this sandwich is no joke. It utilizes three different types of onions: yellow, shallot and green. They are cooked for one hour and twenty minutes until perfectly caramelized. Do not miss out on this sandwich that sold out in two days after a test run. Also, if you’re lucky enough to get some of Ms. Farly’s time, ask about her Italian Gravy. A stupendous sandwich and a great time!

The Review: Best Catfish FiletKoodie Hoo’s is pretty much the place to be in Mt. Vernon, a family friendly establishment that also caters to those searching for nightlife in the area. With great drink great specials, dancing and music theme nights including open mic, this is where the seriously west side goes for fun – and to eat. The menu at Koodie Hoo’s features favorites like country fried steak and prime rib as well as one of the best catfish filet sandwiches we have ever had. With a sesame seed bun, it’s dressed in crunchy white onions, lettuce, tomato and not much else. But it doesn’t need much of anything else, because the sizable and supremely tender catfish filet is hand-breaded with Koodie Hoo’s very own special recipe batter. The flavor of the fish is very subtle but savory, and the breading has the slightest bit of spice to it which really lulls the taste buds. The batter is light, but still provides and slight crunch teamed with the lettuce, onions and tomato making for a remarkable texture play. Getaway to Mt. Vernon for a great time and for a stellar catfish filet sandwich!

Lyle’s Sportszone1404 E. Morgan Ave. Evansville, IN 47711(812) 425-7729

The Review: Best Overall Homemade SauceLyle’s has been a neighborhood favorite for years. And while there is obviously an emphasis on sports at this friendly bar, it has a lot more to offer, including live music every week from the likes of Scott Lindsey and Josh Merritt as well as some of the best holiday-themed celebrations around. The food is pretty sensational, too. One of the best bets on the Lyle’s menu is their Famous Original Loaded Stromboli. This strom is truly loaded with onions, green pepper, mushrooms, tomato, cheese and topped off with a special homemade sauce. The tangy special sauce was the flavor that stood out among the rest electrifying the taste buds. The super-soft (but toasted, is that possible?) buttered hoagie roll was awesome as well. This sammich with knock out the most ferocious of appetites; it is massive! A beautiful hunk of sexy strom-loving goodness! You can get “loaded” at Lyle’s, but you can also get your stomach “loaded” at Lyle’s with their kickass.com Famous Original Loaded Strom.

The Review: Best Twist on a ClassicSince its grand opening two years ago, Backstage Bar & Grill has been one of the main establishments helping to revive Downtown Evansville nightlife. It’s perfectly positioned adjacent to the Ford Center, a prime location for pre and post-event celebrations – particularly for Icemen games. These guys know how to entertain big crowds with daily drink specials and the best in live music/DJs, but don’t forget about the great food. This month comes the new Top Shelf Reuben off of their limited time summer pull-out menu. This is not your run-of-the-mill Reuben. Backstage’s Top Shelf Reuben features 100% natural uncured pastrami that boasts a beautiful color and spice. It is perfectly tender and savory. Instead of the typical Thousand Island dressing the Backstage crew has created their own special sauce that brings a slight smokiness. All those flavors aside, the star of this sandwich is Backstage’s house slaw. With a substantial spice and a milky sweetness, this flavor takes the sammich into the stratosphere. The texture play here is perfectly balanced with the grittiness of the rye-bread, crunch of the slaw and the seductive tenderness of the pastrami.

The Review: Best for Heat-SeekersThese guys are famous for fast service and fresh ingredients. Their French and whole wheat breads are baked in-house daily and every vegetable, cheese and all-natural meat is sliced at the restaurant each and every day. Whether you choose one of JJ’s 8” subs or giant club sandwiches, you’ll get the same quality and selection of freebies, including onion, lettuce, tomato, Real Hellman’s mayo, sliced cucumbers, hot peppers, Dijon mustard, yellow mustard, oil & vinegar and oregano. We were invited to try the Italian Night Club – generously piled with delicious Genoa salami, Italian capicola, smoked ham and provolone cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and homemade Italian vinaigrette. And yes, it’s every bit as amazing as it sounds – and even better if you crank up the heat with hot peppers. Best of all, you can have it delivered right to your door with any of JJ’s side offerings: soda pop, chocolate chip or oatmeal cookies, real potato chips and jumbo pickles.

Flames Grille1200 W. Columbia Ave. Evansville, IN 47710812-205-4704Find them on Facebook

The Review: Best BBQJust when you thought Flames Grille was but a footnote in the history of Evansville restaurants (heavy rain and flooding nearly spelled the end), they are back and better than ever following a recent grand re-opening. Having left the east side behind, this classic café with a “burning passion for flavor” now resides in a new home on Columbia Avenue. But one thing that thankfully remains the same is the menu featuring fall-off-the-bone ribs, fresh catfish, chops and many other favorites – like the Dark Danielle roast beef sandwich. Named after Chef John’s wife, this special creation comes served on dark rye bread with tender roast beef, Swiss cheese, grilled onion and hot mustard (with sweetness to it, too). Every ingredient is primo fresh – just like you’ve come to expect from Flames Grille. The combination of the caramelized onions and hot, sweet horseradish flavor really stands out. Without question, the Dark Danielle is a fantastic tribute to a wonderful woman. Come on in and give Chef John his props!

The Review: Best Build-Your-OwnPita Pit’s motto is “fresh thinking, healthy eating,” so you know going in that your experience promises to be out of the ordinary – in the best way possible. And their “build-your-own” approach to food assures that you’ll get exactly what you want; freedom of choice reigns here. In other words, Pita Pit is an exciting alternative to fast food with a focus on catering to health-conscious people in the community who still want great tasting menu items (just minus the grease and huge buns). The selection of meat, veggie and breakfast pitas is varied enough to satisfy people of all ages (and degrees of pickiness). We were treated to the prime rib pita, a light, refreshing, even energizing wrap with our choice of toppings: shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, cheddar cheese and horseradish Dijon (many other toppings are available). The pita itself was so soft and the seasoned prime rib was perfectly complemented by the slightly spicy horseradish Dijon. With each bite, the taste of freshness totally popped. At Pita Pit, you’ll leave feeling healthy, not weighed down.

Signing up for Ivy Tech’s Culinary Arts program literally put Watson on the right course. “Working with Chef Watez pushed me to a whole other level,” he explains. “He’s a great guy, a great teacher, very knowledgeable.” Watson learned not just specific cooking techniques but also catering, safety, sanitation – even human resources. “They teach you everything,” he says. “Ivy Tech trained me so well to the point that I have so many skills. I was prepared for anything.” And that’s no exaggeration. Even before graduating, Watson’s hard work and schooling paid off in April when he was offered a major promotion to head chef at Holiday Inn. It’s a huge responsibility, but Ivy Tech has his back. “Chef Watez is an excellent advisor,” he says. “Even though I’m finished with the program, I can still call him up, and I’m always willing to help him with anything if he needs me.” In addition to running the show at Holiday Inn, Watson has two kids at home, coaches youth football and produces music on the side. It’s tiring, but incredibly rewarding – and he’s just getting started. “As a chef, once you have the basics, the sky is the limit if you have an open palette. Ivy tech teaches you all of those things.” —Thomas Ellis

cooking Spotlight

Ivy Tech Culinary Arts Program

if you’ve ever dreamed of turning your love for cooking into a career, it’s time to consider enrolling in Ivy Tech’s Culinary Arts program – two years that could change your life forever. Chef Watez Phelps got the call to help develop

the program eight years ago. He had the educational credentials and culinary expertise necessary, but more importantly, his military background and easy-going nature made for the perfect balance of organization and positivity in the classroom – where he spent most of his time in the program’s infancy. “When we first started, I taught every class, and I enjoyed it,” he explains. “I didn’t hire my first adjunct teacher until about three years in. Now, I have about five of them and a new lab tech each school year.” It’s a roundabout way of saying that Ivy Tech’s program is expanding. In fact, there’s never been a downturn in enrollment. According to Phelps, about 150 students are currently learning the basic principles of culinary arts, i.e., how to cook without a recipe – and so much more. And if the last seven years are any indication, the great majority of them will find work after graduating. “To my knowledge, we have had about a 90-95% placement rate of students in the actual cooking profession,” Phelps says. “It’s a testament to the fact that our community wants trained professionals in those particular jobs.” It’s also a testament to the great work that Phelps and his staff are doing every day. And there’s no better example of the program’s success than former student, George Watson. Watson got the cooking bug early, around six years old. After getting his GED through Job Corps, he bounced around different restaurants before landing a position with Biaggis where he worked for a number of years. “I learned a lot there, because it was all authentic, all from scratch,” Watson explains. “I started as a prep cook and within six months became the head saucier – made all their soups and sauces. Next thing you know, I was working the whole kitchen.” A friend tipped him off to an opening at Holiday Inn by the airport, so Watson left Biaggis; but he also sensed that it was time to go back to school, to plan for the future. Having just gotten married, he was determined to make a better life for himself and his new wife.

Penny Lane Coffeehouse & Pub East2004 Washington AveEvansville, Indiana 47714(812) 473-4440

I n multi ple cultures all over the world very big ideas have been sculpted inside ti ny coff eehouses and pubs. These humble litt le joints should be infi nitely comfortable and functi on as canal through

which free-thought can fl ow uninfl uenced by the rigid, banal constructs of everyday society. These places should be cozy dens of creati vity and ti ny staycati ons for the mind and soul. Penny Lane Coff eehouse & Pub East, the litt le sister of Penny Lane Coff eehouse in downtown Evansville, can easily check off all of the prior menti oned musts for coff eehouses, and so much more… On top of fantasti c coff ee, make it known that Penny Lane East has great grub for any ti me of the day and yes, beer and wine as well as a creati ve alcoholic concocti on or two (or three). Try a cocktail, ‘rita, mimosa or a PL specialty drink like the Apple of My Thai to quench your thirst. More than all of that, Penny Lane is Evansville. It is a local business whose roots have penetrated deep into the topsoil of the community. Walking into the establishment I can’t imagine a workable structure for a business that is any less pretenti ous or any more comfortable. When I say it has all the comforts of home, I mean it literally. Calming, soft music fi lls the air and works of local arti sts adorn the walls. Care for a rousing game of Scrabble? Penny Lane East has you covered. Plus a couple other board games. What I enjoy the most personally about the ambience is the abundance of light that streams into the building from two large skylights and from the front porti on of the structure that is prett y much all windows. Now for the food… In keeping with the culinary theme of this month’s issue, I was served three of Penny Lane East’s Signature Sandwiches. All of these off erings are available throughout the day. The fi rst I encountered was the Run DMCheese. A glorious, gooey mess of cheese that took me back to my childhood. The texture of the toasted bread worked against the gooeyness of the mac-n-cheese in a scrumpti ous way. There is a hint of sweetness as well. Surprisingly, this sandwich packs intense fl avor but is not too heavy.

The second sandwich to the plate was the Maui Slam. It is one of the best – I would call breakfast – sandwiches that I have had in a long while perfect for consumpti on before a hike or other morning acti vity. The sweet zing of the sandwich’s pineapple awakens the taste buds, and then the ham and cheese provide savory soothing. Once again, the textures here are balanced and very pleasant. Also, same as the RunDMCheese, the fl avor is incredible without the sandwich being too heavy. The last sammy that sauntered my way provocati vely was the Elvis. And as the name suggests, this one stands out and holds no blows. With bacon, peanut butt er and banana, this sandwich has no shortage of personality or fl avor! It is instantly intriguing and very tasty. The bizarre-o trio works together very well, smoky and savory with a touch of sweet. The textures work together as well. But be careful, this sandwich packs both a fl avor and a gastrological wallop… And it should for being named aft er the “King.” So, anyti me you seek a calm, cozy place to foster your creati ve spirit or a warm, welcoming place to have a couple drinks and unwind, Penny Lane Coff eehouse & Pub East is the place for you… And it is so much more than just a place with wonderful coff ee!—Nick Durcholz

localchefspotlightConnor Odde of Red Geranium

I realized that I enjoyed doing this. I enjoyed

creating and presenting people with food.”—Connor Odde of Red Geranium

Connor worked as the New Harmony Inn conference center chef for a year and a half before being moved to the Red Geranium’s kitchen about a month ago. “I prett y much like everything about [being a chef],” said Connor. “I like making people happy, being able to provide them with a memory – when you get that fi rst bite of food, it brings you back to that certain ti me in your life.” There isn’t much that Connor doesn’t love about his job. “I guess the only thing I don’t like is when something doesn’t work out the way you planned or you missed a step and you can’t quite fi gure it out,” he said. Connor’s passion for food is evident in the entrees that the Red Geranium serves. He is currently in the process of re-working the menu, which will change this fall. “It’s a process,” he said. “I make things, tweak them, change them... It takes a couple of weeks.” The Red Geranium in New Harmony features French-inspired American cuisine. Connor struggled to decide what his favorite dish on the menu is, debati ng between the scallops and the fi let. “I think I would have to say it’s the fi let,” he said. Currently, Connor splits his ti me between working as the Red Geranium’s chef and conti nuing his work at the conference center while another chef is brought on and trained to replace him. “It has been a hecti c past few weeks,” he said of the changes. The Red Geranium’s menu features a multi tude of elegant appeti zers and courses along with delicious desserts. The restaurant, which was established in 1964, is opened daily for dinner, seasonally for lunch and features a weekend brunch service. Located in the heart of historic New Harmony, the Red Geranium off ers visitors the chance to enjoy three diff erent dining rooms, an array of wines and a beauti ful view of the lake on which it sits. The restaurant also features the Grapevine Bar, where visitors can enjoy an extensive list of fi ne bourbons, scotches and other liquors.— Lauren VanCleve

Connor Odde has been living in New Harmony for most of his life, so it’s only natural that he would work in a restaurant that plays a huge role in the New Harmony food scene. The 22-year-old has been working as a chef for the Red Geranium at the New Harmony Inn while

he works on his culinary degree from Ivy Tech University. Connor began working in the kitchen at 14 years old as a dishwasher and quickly realized his passion for food. “I realized that I enjoyed doing this. I enjoyed creati ng and presenti ng people with food.” Aft er a few months of dishwashing, he asked the chefs in the kitchen to teach him their art. Connor, who had not grown up cooking, quickly developed a love for food.

Good ti mes are brewing at Ellis Park with stakes racing, parimutuel slots and spirits. Toast the dog days of summer with Friday night

bierstubes on the lawn in front of the clubhouse, overlooking the main track, or recline under shaded picnic tables. “We’ve been blessed with great weather,” says Director of Marketi ng Jon Willett , and “drinking draft beer outside is always preferred.” The Budweiser truck backs into the grassy staging area immediately aft er the last race on Fridays through Labor Day, usually by 5 p.m. Live music is on tap from 7-10 p.m., and the gaming lounge stays open late for casino-style entertainment. The bierstube is a new event for those 21-and-over “to promote the park to everyone by off ering something diff erent … to get people to come down and experience Ellis Park,” says Willett . The bierstube off ers free admission and 24 oz. draft beer for $4, 16 oz. bott les for $4, and $1 hot dogs. Previous musical guests have barreled out classic rock and blues. At the height of Prohibiti on, the racetrack was an oasis forged from 200 acres of wild river bott oms to bring the acti on closer to fun-seekers. Today, Ellis Park welcomes gamers to its remodeled clubhouse where the picks include year-round simulcasti ng, Instant Racing Machines and a sports bar. From penny machines to $5 games, jackpots are waiti ng. One sure bet is the giveaways during the live meet, including free plays and prizes. The gates open at 11 a.m., and the fi rst post is at 12:50 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Every Sunday is dollar day featuring $1 draft beer, soft drinks, hot dogs, ice cream and more. With an additi onal $300,000 from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund, Ellis Park adds eight allowance races for 2-year-olds. The highlight of the racing schedule includes the $100,000 Gardenia Stakes on August 9 and The Cliff Guilliams Handicap on September 1.—Jaimie Humbert

Entertainment aside, few would argue that the highlight of every St. Ben’s summer social is the food. Parishioner Mark Hackert describes the chicken dinners as “some of the very best in town” and the homemade desserts and other treats from the various food booths rank right up there, too. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy one of the last summer socials of the season. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy one of the last summer

Budweiser reminds you to choose a designated driver.

St. Ben’s Summer Social

The St. Ben’s summer social hours are as follows: Thurs, 5 p.m. – 10 p.m., Fri and Sat, 5 p.m. – 11 p.m.

The beer garden opens at 6 p.m. on Fri and Sat. St. Ben’s Cathedral is located at 1328 Lincoln Ave.

Summerti me means summer socials, and St. Ben’s Cathedral has a long traditi on of bringing the community together every year for three days of food, fun and fundraising.

by Thomas Ellis

Every fourth weekend in August, a dedicated group of parish volunteers works ti relessly to put on a safe, family-friendly summer social that is both entertaining and appeti zing. With

delicious chicken dinners, festi val food booths, games and exciti ng rides, the St. Ben’s summer social makes for a great ti me all around. This year’s social runs from Thursday, August 21 through Saturday, August 23. And while you won’t want to miss opening night, the main acti on is set for Friday and Saturday when a brand new beer garden is open and music fi lls the air. JEB guitarist and vocalist Brock Stahl will take the stage Friday evening to really get the party started, delivering his unique brand of rock. Saturday night, it’s a musical free-for-all with a DJ spinning all of your favorites. Along with music and beer, this new 21 and over area will be host to a black jack tent and cornhole tournament for those who love the thrill of friendly competi ti on. All of this entertainment will be available for just a $5 cover charge.

Odds are that you’ve never heard of “chiptune” music. No worries; you can receive a virtual educati on in

this obscure but fascinati ng genre when Litt le Sound Assembly Free Chiptune Festi val comes to PG Art Gallery & Café on August 8 and 9. Twenty arti sts from all around the Midwest are scheduled to blip and bleep for your enjoyment, creati ng music by manipulati ng sound chips from vintage computers and classic video game systems. While not for everyone, chiptune has periodically infi ltrated the mainstream as heard in tracks by such global superstars as Beck and the Killers. The genre’s biggest breakthrough came in 2007 with the release of 8-Bit Operators, a tribute to the greatest synthesizer group of all ti me, Kraft werk. Since then, the genre has conti nued to fl irt with mainstream acceptance but maintains a cult following devoted to exploring the possibiliti es of sound via old technology. Video gaming tournaments and free play, hosted by Evansville’s own fi ghti ng game community (SWIFGA) will take place on both days. For anyone unable to att end, Litt le Sound Assembly will stream live on the internet through HI2U Internet Radio and video game blogging group, Beardy’s Roundup.—Thomas Ellis

The show starts at 7 p.m. LSA is free to anyone interested, but you can help the cause

by purchasing a festi val t-shirt online or at the show. For more informati on, fi nd LSA on

Kelsea Slade is an all-American girl and she does what she loves. She owns her own business, designing and creati ng handbags. “I have always appreciated a well-dressed lady with the perfect accessories…” Slade says, “I love minimalism and classic style.”

Aft er Slade graduated from college, she began spending the money to carry bett er handbags. She then realized there was something missing from the market she was so interested in: designs that kept an elegant style with a high-quality arti stry and quality material, made in the United States. There was a spark of creati vity inside Slade that was begging to be let out. She was working a corporate job that wasn’t providing the sti mulati on she needed. In 2010, she launched her business on Etsy and later moved to her own website. Slade achieved some early goals rather quickly, and has since expanded her brand to other women’s accessories and some men’s accessories as well. “I fi nd that my mind is more open and free to think when I am traveling and when I am in nature… There are so many distracti ons in our world that it’s nice to just get away and dream up what’s next for KSM,” Slade says. On a recent trip to Santa Cruz, Calif. she says she was inspired by the laid back mentality of the area. As a result, Slade will be releasing a fall line based on her experience. All of those products - as well as everything that has ever been a part of Slade’s line - will be made right here in the United States. Though it costs

her three to four ti mes the amount it would cost for producti on in another country, Slade says having everything made here at home is the least she can do to give back to all of those who have lost their lives to defend our country. It is also important to her to see where her handbags are being made. She says she is fortunate enough to be able to visit her manufacturer as oft en as she likes and spend ti me with the people who hand-make her products. Aside from running her business, Slade enjoys spending ti me with her husband and their chocolate lab at their family lake house during the nice months of the year. In her free ti me, she enjoys designing new pieces for her line, as well as making jewelry. When it comes ti me for her to grab a bag for the evening, Slade fl oats between several. Of course, each serves a diff erent purpose depending on what she has planned. If she is in a hurry she enjoys her TIP pouch, which fi ts only the most necessary of her items. When traveling, she carries a tote which will not be available to the public unti l fall. It holds the necessary items and a lot of extras as well. For a date night, she carries her Brooklyn Fold-over, but lately, her favorite is the monogrammed mint julep fold-over.—Justi n Law

soundboardZac Mann

Follow Zac Mann on Facebook and twitt er.

He can sing, he can dance, even act – and the girls can’t get enough of him. 16-year-old Evansville nati ve Zac Mann may draw comparisons to Justi n Bieber, but he’s most defi nitely his own man. And he’s taking Los

Angeles by storm. Two years ago, Mann and his mother, Kathy, took off for Hollywood with no idea quite what to expect. It just seemed like the right ti me to test the waters and seek out creati ve opportuniti es. Aft er all, Mann had spent his enti re childhood building towards this moment. “I didn’t grow up in a musical family, but I was always inspired by music,” he says. “And I took all the art and music classes I could in school – theater, drama, poetry.” Mann’s interest in music and the arts periodically subjected him to ridicule from classmates, so he “kept it on the low” unti l his passion could no longer be contained. Los Angeles beckoned. Upon arriving, Mann began taking acti ng classes and doing anything he could to raise his profi le. “It’s kind of hard at fi rst to get your name out there,” he explains. “I was constantly out trying to make friends and meet people that I thought might help me.” Social media soon came to the rescue. Mann started recording cover songs and posti ng them on Youtube. Almost overnight, everything changed. “It was weird how instant it was – I was so surprised,” he says. “I never thought anything would happen with music because it

seemed like such a dream.” Mann’s videos for his covers of “Na Na” by Trey Songz and Ellie Goulding’s “Burn” quickly racked up over 150,000 views apiece. More importantly, his growing legion of (mostly female) fans – dubbed “Manniacs” – helped to spread the word. Mann’s fi rst meet-and-greet at City Walk in Los Angeles ended in chaos; the plug was pulled due to the crush of girls clamoring for a spot in line. With a music career seemingly in reach, Mann, to the disbelief and extreme frustrati on of his mother, turned down several promising acti ng gigs, including a shot at the lead in a major Nickelodeon show. Instead, he headed back to Evansville for a much-needed break and some quality family ti me, uncertain about the future. Then an unexpected email from Justi n Bieber’s camp appeared. Mann and his mother quickly loaded the car back up, bound once again for Los Angeles – 32 hours straight. The off er to join the Boy Band Project (BBP) put together by

a producti on team called the Messengers was simply too good to pass up. For the next nine months, Mann and his four “brothers” worked six days a week, nine hours a day, constantly rehearsing. BBP’s talent and good looks quickly translated to big success. At the ti me, only One Directi on eclipsed them in popularity. But despite the acclaim, Mann ulti mately felt dissati sfi ed. It was ti me to go solo. Post-BBP, Mann lined up a fi rst rate producti on team and released “Sunshine,” an original song perfectly tailored for summer. A clothing line called Anonymous is currently in development and more singles are on the horizon, including a track featuring two major rappers. He’s open to acti ng possibiliti es but primarily focused on music. “I’ve been out of the band (BBP) for seven months and what I’ve been doing is really, really working on my craft – getti ng everything pulled together, getti ng my sound where I want it,” he says. Being away from family conti nues to be diffi cult, but Mann is more than happy to call Los Angeles home. “One thing I’ve learned out here is that if you have a dream, it’s possible.”—Thomas Ellis

Rati ngs are given from 1-5. “5” is the best rati ng a reviewer can give, meaning they were very pleased with the beer and would strongly recommend it. “1” is the lowest rati ng a reviewer can give, meaning they did not enjoy the beer at all.

Daniel Knight • 4.5This one’s a dry-hopped IPA from the respectable Hawaiian Kona Brewing Company. It pours a slightly hazy, medium orange-amber with a two fi nger head that quickly diminishes. The color clears up and there’s a bit of lacing as you drink it down. The aroma is nice. Citrus and Bready. Defi nitely picking up on its 65 IBUs of hoppiness. The taste is very good. The aroma leads you right into the taste, and its hops and malts are more balanced than I expected actually. In spite of itself, the mouthfeel is on the light side with medium carbonati on and a refreshing fi nish.

Paul Bragin • 4.5A thin, white head crowns this beer for a moment, but vanishes rather quickly. The beer that remains has a rich, straw color. The scent contains a great combinati on of tropical fruit and pine notes from the hops used. The hop presence seems to balance out a litt le bit when drinking the beer, but returns in the long fi nish. Hop lovers will defi nitely want to seek out this new off ering in the world of IPAs.

Jabez Marti nez • 4This is a hazy, amber-colored beer. I would consider this an average pale ale with sweet-tasti ng hops. I am a fan of other Kona beers but this one was just a litt le bett er than average for an IPA. The hops didn’t slam you in the face. I actually enjoyed it.

Daniel Knight • 4.5Marketed as a Belgian-Style IPA this brew makes a great fi rst impression. It pours up a prett y foam-fi lled orangey color with a generous airy head. It sett les out to a murky, golden orange brew with at least a litt le head and a lot of lacing throughout the experience. The aroma is excepti onal with hops, citrus, sweetness and even some mint (think desert). The fl avor is almost as good as the nose. The balance of hops and malts is excellent and it’s very smooth and drinkable. This is one of the best IPA/Belgian hybrids I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy. Try it!

Paul Bragin • 4.5A thick, white head forms on this beer and stays for a long ti me, while never completely disappearing. The beer beneath it is a dark amber color. Citrusy hop notes fi ll the nose when fi rst smelling the beer. The tangy, citrus hop fl avor profi le remains when drinking the beer, and also in the fi nish. This hybrid Belgian-style India Pale Ale could pair well with spicy foods, tangy cheeses like feta or salads.

Jabez Marti nez • 4.5You have to like a beer named Tramp Stamp, but usually the beers with odd ti tles are not very good. I was wrong in this instance. This beer is cloudy amber but had a very thick head. I could smell the hops and I was very impressed with the fl avors. This is the best IPA I have drank, but that may be due to the Belgian infl uence on the recipe. The hops fl avor didn’t beat you over the head and overwhelm your taste buds.

Daniel Knight • 3.5KCCO - Keep Calm and Carry On. Here’s a lager with a twist. It pours up dark brown. Hold it up to the light and you’ll see a prett y reddish color come through. The head is thick and beige with a fair amount of retenti on. The aroma is mostly roasted chocolate, coff ee with a bit of malts. The taste is actually somewhat complex with a dark, toasted grain and nutt y fl avor, light caramel and a subtle hint of toff ee. The mouthfeel is quite light with moderate carbonati on and a pleasant aft ertaste. I found this beer to be very smooth and drinkable. Combining that with its relati vely low ABV (5.1%), I’d call it a good choice as a session beer.

Paul Bragin • 4.5A thick, tan head tops the beer, which fi lls the glass as black as coal. The scent of roasted malt dominates the nose, with hints of smoke also present. Likewise, the taste of roasted malt hits the tongue and stays aft er swallowing, along with notes of chocolate and coff ee. This beer could be good for someone who thinks they don’t like stouts or porters, as it is very easy to drink.

Jabez Marti nez • 4The KCCO is a dark-colored beer as listed on the bott le. I did noti ce a very earthy aroma which was not very pleasant, but the fl avor was great. I could taste the light coff ee and caramel fl avors but the aroma was distracti ng. I would compare this to a Guinness with bett er taste but a litt le sti nky.

Daniel Knight • 2Dirty Blonde is an American Pale Wheat Ale with an ABV of 4.50%. Its color is light, cloudy beige and it produces a grayish-white, airy, bubbly head that fades away to nothing almost as quickly as it comes. The nose is unremarkable with hints of straw and dough. The fl avor is equally unremarkable mimicking the aroma. In my opinion, this truly a poor excuse for what I expected to at least be a reasonably good craft beer. At least it was refreshing while it was nice and cold. But then so is water.

Atwater Brewery Dirty Blonde Ale

Paul Bragin • 4A very thin, white head forms on this beer, but it disappears instantly leaving behind a deep golden-colored beer. The scent contains a combinati on of citrus notes from the orange peel and spice notes from the coriander used in brewing the beer. Upon fi rst drinking the beer, it tastes like an average lager, but spice notes come through in the fi nish. The beer is light and refreshing. It is a great beer for hot summer days.

Jabez Marti nez • 3 This is a cloudy, straw-colored beer. I had big expectati ons, but it was just average. It says it has coriander and orange peel but I couldn’t really taste either of them. The total fl avor was just very weak and this may be due to the IPA I just sampled, but sti ll it seemed very watery.

Random Beer Facts!1.) A bride would distribute ale to her wedding guests old-age England. In exchange, they would give money as a gift /donati on to the newly weds. The beer was known as “Bride Ale”, is which where the word “bridal” comes from!

2.) The very fi rst Oktoberfest was held in Munich in 1810....and sti ll thrives on a yearly basis today!

3.) The United State’s nati onal anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner”, was actually inspired by a Briti sh Drinking song called “Anacreon”.

93.5 The Wolf and Kenny Kent Chevrolet’s Summer Country Nights Concert Series conti nues at Evansville’s Victory Theatre with Jon Pardi, who will

arrive on August 15th with his wild-and-rowdy, high-energy show.

Summer Country Nights Concert Series:

An InterviewJon Pardi:

Pardi, (yeah, rhymes with party) the 25-year-old rising country star took a break from his aggressive schedule and answered a few

questi ons. I began with asking what the Evansville audience should expect, and Pardi replied that his shows are “for having a great ti me. We love inti mate shows where we can interact with the audience, and it goes great with beer.” Pardi has made quite a name for himself with his popular song “Up All Night” from his freshman album Write You A Song. The album exposes the fl are he has for writi ng music that cuts straight to the chase, and leaves no stones unturned. He told me that his music has been infl uenced by many great musicians, namely, George Strait, Dwight Yoakam, Alan Jackson, Elvis Presley and Tom Pett y. Interesti ngly, Pardi added that he is parti cularly in love with the sounds of the legendary Ray Charles. “I can’t stop listening to Ray Charles. If I could be any musician, it would be Ray Charles.”

This California kid is from the town of Dixon, which is hardly the vision that most mid-westerners have of the west coast. When I told him California seemed an unlikely place to produce a country music star. Jon explained that Dixon is a farming community that loves country music, and that he was raised driving bulldozers and John Deere tractors. The performer began writi ng and playing music as a youngster and says that he always wanted to be a musician. When asked what other profession he would aspire to, he replied: “If I didn’t have the music in me, I would want to be a fi refi ghter.” It’s a good thing he’s interested in fi ghti ng fi res, because I have a feeling it’s going to be a hot one at the Victory Theatre on August 15. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets,

by calling 1-800-745-3000 and at the Ford Center Ticket Offi ce. Tickets are also available (day of the show only) at the Victory Theatre

Box Offi ce. Show begins at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.)

Skid RowRise of the Damnati on Army - United World Rebellion: Chapter TwoMegaforce Records3/5

There’s almost nothing more diffi cult for an established band to do than

replace an iconic lead singer and carry on as though it’s business as usual. Oft en, it’s not just the loss of a recognizable and beloved voice but the interrupted chemistry between members that throws everything off . Skid Row post-Sebasti an Bach is a prime example of this phenomenon. The music sounds roughly the same – aft er all, guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo and bassist Rachel Bolan co-wrote all of the band’s biggest hits. But from the moment new singer Johnny Solinger opens his mouth, something’s not quite right. It sti ll rocks; it’s just that Bach never had to work this hard to get your att enti on. That being said, if you can block Bach from your memory – or even bett er, if you’re unfamiliar with that phase of the band – there’s a lot to like about Rise of the Damnati on Army. “We are the Damned,” “Give it the Gun” and “Damnati on Army” blaze with fi ery riffi ng and contain the sort of “Youth Gone Wild” choruses that sent the previous incarnati on to the top of the charts. The only real misstep, “Catch Your Fall,” shoots for “I Remember You” power-balladry but quickly lapses into an adult contemporary weeper, just on the wrong side of the fence.

Elephant StoneThree PoisonsHidden Pony/Burger Records4/5

Is there another sitar-based psychedelic band out there as good as Elephant Stone? A bett er questi on: are there any

other sitar-based psychedelic bands out there? It’s just a long-winded way of saying that this Montreal trio is in a musical class all their own. Pioneers of “hindie-rock” which marries Hindustani classical music with rock (and a disti nct 90s Brit-pop infl uence), Elephant Stone have created something bordering on revoluti onary with Three Poisons. These songs groove, jangle and rumble in fascinati ng ways – helped in no small part by Rishi Dhir’s sitar mastery. “Motherless Child” is what George Harrison might have sounded like if his early sitar experiments were backed by the beat of “Revoluti on” and Donovan took over lead vocals. Slightly more contemporary, “Knock You from Yr Mountain” is anchored by a descending post-punk bass line that keeps the track moving even when all other instruments drop out. Dhir’s sparse sitar adornments add just the right amount of spice. With a rhythmic nod to “Tomorrow Never Knows,” the ti tle track comes across like the soundtrack to a snake charmer; guitar lines spiral creepily around a rooted bass note while a two chord organ progression repeats ominously. Pick your poison or three – every song kills.

SPOTLIGHTLOCAL BAND cd reviewsABOUT THE BAND:Salt the Earth is Ben Rodenberg (guitar, banjo, mandolin), Eric Biesel (guitar, banjo, mandolin), Dylan Hawf (fi ddle) and Amanda Adams (upright bass). We consider our birthday to be in January of 2012. That’s when Ben came to a practi ce. He played a soft , romanti c version of “Hey Ya” by Outkast and we knew it was meant to be. The band uti lizes bluegrass instrumentati on, but is not limited to the genre.

WHAT THEY COVER / DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE:We cover too many 90’s alternati ve songs and a few bluegrass standards. We also cover this one weird Old English poem called “Mad Tom O’ Bedlam” and the theme song from the cartoon Adventure Time. Our originals are mostly narrati ve, oft en dark and have a high body count.

THEIR INFLUENCES:So, we are obviously infl uenced by 90’s grunge, but also everyone from Bessie Smith to Opeth to MF Doom to, possibly more in line with expectati ons, Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson.

WHERE YOU CAN CATCH THEIR PERFORMANCES:We play at Tin Man, Lamasco Bar and a lot of the festi vals and events around town. We’re coming back to the Sunday Market this month. We’re also set to play at the Wandering Owl Wine and Beer Trail event at Wesselman Woods October 18th and a fundraiser for the Alhambra Theater September 27th. We also just released a four song demo recorded by Mother Brain Sound Infrastructure that is on our Facebook page and on Reverb Nati on.

Various Artists2776: A Levinson Bros & Rob Kutner Presentati onCD Baby4.5/5

Comedy and charity go hand in hand. And that’s the idea behind 2776, a benefi t album for OneKid OneWorld in their “eff orts to promote educati on in Kenya and El

Salvador.” Conceived and organized by Rob Kutner (Conan, Daily Show) and the Levinson Brothers (Tonight Show, Comedy Central), the 28-song comedy-musical skewers America and all its glorious faults with the help of some truly talented and hilarious people. The wide-ranging list of performers includes Patt on Oswalt, Andrew WK, Ed Helms, Margaret Cho, Will Forte, Neko Case and many, many more – all total, 82 Emmy, Tony, and Grammy-winning actors and musicians. Together, they envision an alternate universe, a dystopian future molded by familiar faces from the past and present. All facets of American life get the comedic treatment: sports, sex, media, religion, technology, war and more.

Highlights of this ambiti ous project include Patt on Oswalt as God (“God Blessed America”), alerti ng everyone that he’s had enough and is looking for green pastures. The charmingly irreverent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog rips through “Welcome to America,” touching on such delightf ul subjects as steroids and Chlamydia, while Bobcat Goldthwait and former Mekons singer Sally Timms playfully tackle the long-term eff ects of sun exposure/radiati on (“Mole Lott a Love”).

You can download or buy the CD of 2776 online at cdbaby.com – lots of laughs for a great cause. —Thomas Ellis

Pawns or KingsPomme de TerreSelf-Released4/5

It’s every band’s worst nightmare. Aft er spending months craft ing their new album, Pawns or Kings met with untold disaster; the computer fi les were corrupted,

every note irrevocably lost. But rather than give up, they painstakingly re-recorded Pomme de Terre from scratch, adding shades of grey previously missing from their folk Americana sound. Loyal fans of the band begged for a taster, so Pawns or Kings released a rough mix earlier this year to thank them for their pati ence. The response was incredible – and unexpected. Now, the mastered version (mark III) is fi nally here, and it was worth the wait.

Almost gospel in nature, “Light Over the Ridge” hurtles forward with a nimble banjo riff and driving beat before a foot-stomping breakdown brings the chorus into focus: “Keep your eyes to the skies, there’s a light over the ridge/a shelter in the clearer place for you and I to live.” Vocalist Edward Stengel sings as if he’s leading the congregati on on Sunday, promising salvati on to the masses. The self-explanatory “Black Clouds” is dark, indeed. There’s a menace in the music that hovers over everything as Stengel blearily tells a sobering tale of loss and mourning. Another Sunday sermon, “Names and Maps” is more delicate than “Light Over the Ridge” but no less inspiring. Stengel sounds on the verge of tears, full of raw emoti on.

Walking BicyclesTo Him That Wills The WayHighwheel RecordsFinally, since 2009, the band Walking Bicycles is making music again! Aft er a fi ve year hiatus, due to

the incarcerati on of the band’s guitarist, the band cooked up a new album called To Him That Wills The Way. At nearly 30 minutes long, the band has defi nitely returned with a vengeance! This doom-pop band has 10 new songs that are eccentric and bizarre. The album’s fi rst song, “Impending Doom,” is perhaps the catchiest.

The PharmacySpellsOld Flame Records/Burger RecordsThe Pharmacy, a band from Seatt le, is set to release its newest album Spells. This is the band’s

fi rst album since 2012 and the playlist contains 10 tracks, at a total of nearly 30 minutes long. The Pharmacy has a sound which is sort of a cross between indie rock and psych. Although the lead singer’s voice gives the band a touch of folk as well, especially disti nct in the song, “Coat Tails.”

Within The RuinsPhenomenaeOne Music / Good Fight Music Fan of heavy metal? Within The Ruins may be just what you need. This deathcore band has

completed its latest album, Phenomena, and are being compared to Pantera in regards to the band’s ability to release albums quickly. Within The Ruins is known for its fast metal. While this album sti ll roots itself in that sub-genre, the group wanted to also wanted to challenge itself to come up with something that would appeal to listeners who don’t necessarily enjoy the style.—Justi n Law
