Latin America has produced several police and suspense series, such as Tiempo final (originally from Telefe, with versions by FoxTeleco-lombia and others), Epitafios (HBO Latin America), Demente (TV Azteca), Mujeres asesinas (originally from Pol-ka, with versions by mediamates for Televisa and others), and many more. But the addition of the police ingredi-ent in the telenovela is a bit more recent. It exploded with ¿Dónde está Elisa?, the telenovela by Chile’s TVN that broke audience records in that country, and which adaptation to the US Hispanic market by Telemundo premiered with great success.
The key to success for ¿Dónde está Elisa?, was incorporating the element of suspense as a fundamental part of the plot. The
Telemundo version of the series has been sold in over 30 countries and will now have versions for Indonesia (MD Entertainment), Turkey (Medyavizyon), Colombia (Disney Media Networks Latin America), and Brazil and Argen-tina (Eyeworks Cuatrocabezas).
The creator of ¿Dónde está Elisa? (distributed by Telemundo Internacional), is Chilean writer Pablo Illanes. It is not the first time he writes a story of this nature. Illanes had already worked with police themes on Alguien te mira, a telenovela about a psycho-path who killed beautiful, rich and independent women.
BotinerasThe trend toward police themes is also evidenced in Botineras. This Argentinean telenovela (Telefe,
Underground and Endemol), started with a story that combined comedy and a police theme, and received good ratings. However, viewership started decreasing as the series ran. The producers, under the general direction of Sebastián Ortega, decided to gradually eliminate the comedy aspect because they thought it was taking credibility away from the police story. They opted for a story full of intrigue aimed at a more adult audience, and thus managed to position Botineras (distributed by Telefe Interna-tional), as the most watched fiction in Argentinean television.
More police theMesEverything indicates that police-themed series and telenovelas will continue to flourish. La ley del corazón (RCN), by Mónica Agudelo,
is a story set around a group of lawyers that combines suspense, drama and humor. Telefe and On TV, the production company of Bernarda Llorente and Claudio Villarruel (both formerly from Telefe), just launched Secretos de amor, a police drama written by the authors of Mujeres asesinas and Don Juan y su bella dama. Secretos de amor is distributed by Telefe International.
Telehit, a Televisa Networks channel, also commissioned an original suspense series which is already on the air: Morir en martes, where two detectives are investi-gating the murder of a college student. They realize that students are lying, university officials are not talking, clues are missing, and facts just don’t add up.

The telenovela has proved capable of adopting aspects of other genres without altering its essence: love stories and human passions. Throughout the years, the telenovela has added comedy and action, and more recently, it has been flirting with suspense.

“Many Eastern European countries are still airing re-runs and stock content. I believe 2010 will be a year of stability with recovery starting towards the beginning of next year,” says Michelle Wasserman, Director of International Sales of Telefe International.
Raphael Corrêa Netto, Director of International Sales of Globo TV International, also believes the recovery will be gradual: “We are coming back to many markets this year, and we are also trying to develop alliances around other product categories, not just dramatic series. This is why we are seeking local partners for our documentaries and formats, said Corrêa Netto.
Melissa Pillow, Sales Director for Europe for Telemundo Internacio-nal, disagrees. She believes the region has stayed afloat even during the crisis: “Eastern European clients are very dependent on telenovelas for their daytime and primetime. I did not notice any decrease in telenovela sales or any drop in prices last year, and I believe this year will remain the same. The advertising market in Romania grew 5% and we are seeing similar trends in other markets,” said Pillow.
For Televisa Internacional, Eastern Europe (not counting Russia and the CIS territories), represents 40% of its European sales. Last year, company sales in the region grew 25%, mainly due to sales to CME.
The CME group is replicating the model of its Romanian channel Acasa, in other Eastern European countries such as Slovakia, Croatia and Bulgaria. Acasa is a channel aimed at women and is a major buyer of telenovelas. “This boosted our sales because these are all new channels that cater to women and where telenovelas fit perfectly,” said Claudia Sahab, Europe Director for Televisa Internacional.
TV Azteca is also increasing its sales. “The Eastern European market has grown in the last year, partly due to the economic recovery and party because TV Azteca’s new products have facilitated sales,” said Vinay Jr., CEO of Comarex, representative of TV Azteca.
TradiTional and new counTriesRomania is a traditional market for telenovelas, but there are other countries that are buying telenovelas again after a period of stand-by; and there are other countries that are consuming the genre for the first time.
Caracol, for example, is growing in Bulgaria this year and it is in advanced negotiations in Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia. “We have noticed the development of new markets such as Bosnia, Croatia, and Hungary,” said Camila Reyes, Sales Executive for Eastern Europe for Caracol TV Internacional.

However, because the telenovela is an essential component of the region’s programming grids, distributors’ sales have not suffered significantly and even the most remote territories in the region are recovering gradually.

to Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Latvia. “We also have important agreements in Hungary and Poland,” said Corrêa.
In fact, Hungary and Poland are the markets of greatest growth for Televisa Internacional: “Hungary, which was airing fewer telenovelas, started betting of the genre again early last year. Because the crisis affected budgets for local produc-tions, channels turned to the telenovela: a product that can guarantee a loyal following for several months. We are seeing even greater growth this year,” said Sahab.
Another market of great growth for Televisa Internacional is Poland, where it sells about six telenovelas per year. The Czech Republic is also starting to embrace the genre again.
For Telefe International, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and the CEI countries, are the biggest buyers of canned content, and the telenovelas from TV Azteca are being acquired mainly by Bulgaria, Georgia, Ukraine, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Serbia and the ex-Yugoslavia.
Telemundo also currently has four cable time slots in Hungary and two in Croatia.
Russia, a maRket foR foRmats“The world of fiction formats has gained strength in the international markets, and the sale of scripts of Latin American productions has become a new line of business that we believe will continue to grow,” says Reyes from Caracol. According to the executive, Romania and
Turkey have shown the most interest in telenovela formats.
Telefe’s Wasserman believes Russia is the prime market for formats. “They no longer buy canned series,” she says. Telefe and RCN, have common offices in Russia, where they continue to adapt Los exitosos Pells, which will start airing midyear on CTV. They are also working on the pilot for Tiempo final, licensed Variaciones and are in negotiations with Botineras.
New platfoRmsTelenovelas have already been on VOD for some time. They are typically offered as catch-up for viewers who may have missed an episode. Clients are increasingly asking to include the rights for VOD and IPTV in their contracts.
According to Vinay Jr. of Comarex, “the new platforms are growing and in many cases they complement free-TV with promotions on mobile devices or VOD catch-up.”
Pillow, from Telemundo, believes, “we are in a time where everybody knows we need IPTV, whether for current or future use, but we don’t know how to take advantage of it. Because VOD is paid for by the user, profits can be seen immedi-ately and is easier to understand.”
Meanwhile, the free-TV channels associated with the main distribu-tors (Televisa, Telefe, Caracol, Telemundo), are starting to produce content specifically created for Internet. They should be introduc-ing these productions to their clients soon.

Telemundo Internacional is introducing its most recent telenovela: Las Aparicio. The Argos de México production already premiered on a local pay-TV channel where it tripled the station’s ratings for that time slot. “It is a bold melodrama with a look, quality and theme, which make it a premium product more suitable for prime time. That is why we are offering it not only to free- TV stations but also to channels such as Fox and HBO,” said Melissa Pillow, Sales Director, Europe, who also asserted there are Russian and German compa-nies already interested in acquir-ing the format.
Other products worth highlighting are Perro amor, which beat Anglo network Warner when it reached 1.4 million viewers in its US debut;
and ¿Dónde está Elisa? The fiction has two versions: the original from Chile’s TVN (acquired by Albania), and the version produced by Telemundo, which has been sold in over 30 countries, includ-ing Romania, the CIS territories, and Croatia. It is also being adapted in five markets: Indone-sia, Turkey, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.
El rostro de Analía is one of Telemundo’s telenovelas with more exposure in Eastern Europe. It is currently airing in Romania, Armenia, Georgia, Slovakia, Croatia, Lithuania, and Poland.
Another product with growing distribution in the region is Más sabe el diablo. It currently airs in Albania, Armenia, Georgia, Hungary and soon in Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia.

Telefe International’s hit series Los simuladores, which had already been adapted in Russia, Chile and Mexico, is now in pre-production in Lithuania.
Meanwhile, Russia’s CTC is pre-producing the romantic comedy Los exitosos Pells, which is schedule to premiere this year.
Regarding canned series, the company said Vidas robadas is currently airing on Slovenia’s TV3 and will soon air on a major station in Macedonia. Later this year, Slovenia will also see the launch of Don Juan y su bella dama. This classic telenovela currently airs on Macedonia’s A1 and on Bulgaria’s Viasat. The latter also acquired Herencia de amor.
Teenage audiences in Macedonia will also see the fourth season of Casi ángeles, which is schedule to start airing around mid-year.
One of Telefe’s best-sellers, Muñeca brava, is currently airing as re-runs on Slovakia’s Slovak TV as well as Bulgaria’s Eurocom, which also recently aired Los exitosos Pells.
Telefe International is also gaining ground in Central Europe. The entertainment show Justo a tiempo, currently airs on Portugal’s SIC and France’s TF1 will produce four pilots. Also, the fictions Botineras y Vidas robadas will soon be broadcast for the Italian market.

Three telenovelas from Caracol –Luna la heredera, Muñoz vale x 2, and La ex– are already available free for users of the portal Terra TV in the US and Latin America.
Terra TV (www.terra.tv), is featuring the 47-minute episodes with original audio, Mondays through Fridays. After their first broadcast, the episodes will be available on demand until June of 2011. Lisette Osorio, International Director of Caracol, said to PRODU that thanks to the deal with Terra, Caracol will become the only provider of telenovelas to the portal. Osorio said Caracol had
been working on smaller-scale Internet projects, but the deal with Terra is a big one. She also emphasized the influence new media and video quality have on her company’s ability to diversify and cross-promote its products.
With the broadcast of Caracol’s telenovelas, Terra TV hopes to increase its audience by 20% by years’ end.
“We are starting with these three titles. If they work and traffic to the portal due to this type of content increases, we will continue adding more novelas,” said Osorio.

Televisa’s Development and New Formats team, headed by Eduardo Clemesha, is writing three new series.
Four years after starting the series with the ‘Hecho en México’ seal, Televisa executives are still enthusiastic and qualify the results as “more than positive.”
Aside from reaching a new audience segment and adding new avenues for advertisers, the series have filled the programming grids on both pay- and free-TV channels and have helped strengthen the 360 business model with DVD sales and Internet sponsorships. It has also
had a great impact on the renewal of the brand and company image. Televisa is inspiring new talent who now see a forum for different kinds of stories and narratives.
Additionally, the know-how acquired by the staff throughout the rigorous process this genre entails, has been invaluable.
Along with the development of these three new stories, Televisa is working on the third season of the series Los simuladores and Mujeres asesinas. These are already at the pre-production and casting stage, and again are being produced by Pedro Torres and mediamates for Televisa.
