Among the format pioneers is Televisa. Between July and August of this year, in association with Sony Pictures Television, it will start preproduction of the third season of Los simuladores. The season will have 22 episodes, and most if not all of them will be in 3D.

The project is aimed at the international market, which is increasingly demanding 3D content.

Los simuladores 3D will first launch in a 3D theater to allow more people to experience it, given the still low penetration of 3D TV sets. It will later be broadcast on a 3D-enabled TV platform, so that those who own 3D TV sets can enjoy it from home.

There are other 3D projects in production. VIP 2000 and Brazilian production house Casablanca are co-producing two

teen telenovelas in 3D (Valentina and Salvajes), and Nickelodeon Latin America announced that its original production Grachi will feature an episode in 3D.

Gradual transition“I believe the transition to 3D in each region will happen gradu-ally, due to the high cost and complexity of the technology and the production process,” said Lalo Suárez of Televisa, producer of Los simuladores.

“Producing a 3D episode of a fiction is 65% more expensive than doing it in 2D, because you spend 65% more time executing it. Just to change a camera lens requires adjusting the reel, which can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. That’s where it gets expensive: it takes longer which translates into more cost. As the technology develops, everything will be faster and costs will come down,” added Suárez.

Teresa is the story of an ambi-tious young woman unwilling to work to get ahead in life. Instead, she chooses lies and betrayal to achieve her goals. “It’s an atypical story that will offer great value to channels regardless of the time slot where it gets programmed. It will be challeng-ing for competing shows to try to take ratings away from it,” said José Alberto Castro, producer at Televisa (Palabra de mujer, Rubí, Código postal).

Numbers back it up. With an average of 33 rating points on Canal de las Estrellas, Teresa beat the Academy Awards ceremony, which performed poorly with only 6 rating points.

Three versionsTeresa is an original story by Mimí Bechelani, which was first produced in the 60’s. A few decades later, in 1989, a new version starring Salma Hayek was produced, marking the debut of the now famous actress.

The 2010 Televisa version was adapted by Ximena Suárez, produced by José Alberto Castro and featured actors Angelique Boyer, Aarón Díaz and Sebastian Rulli. It was directed by Mónica Miguel and Alejandro Gamboa.

Teresa represents the first leading role for actress Angelique Boyer. She had previously worked in Corazón salvaje (2009-2010), Alma de Hierro (2008-2009),

Muchachitas como tú (2007), Rebelde (2004-2006) and Cora-zones al límite (2004).

“Angelique is a great young actress with the ability to transform herself into the different facets required by her character. She is obviously very charming and sensual. It was a great decision to give Angelique her first leading role. She had worked on five other productions, which gave her the necessary experience to take on this chal-lenge,” said Castro.

AlTernATive endings As soon as the broadcast ended on Canal de las Estrellas, Televisa’s portal TVolution featured two alternative endings for the telenovela.

The story of the woman who chose betrayal and lies as a way of life stirred up mixed feelings in the audience. Some viewers wanted a happy ending and others wanted to see her pay for the suffering she caused.

For ‘El Güero’ Castro love is a fundamental element in any melodrama. That is why he decided to give the character of Teresa a second chance next to the love of her life, as seen in the ending that aired on TV. Aware it was complicated to please the entire audience, the producer opted to tape alterna-tive endings.

Amar y temer is part of the strategy Caracol started in 2010, which seeks international alliances that would benefit both its local screen in Colombia and its worldwide exports. To this end, the company built a production facility that includes 13 studios, 15 mobile units, and all the technology required to meet international standards.

A greAt chAllengeThe 90-hour fiction is written by Dago García, produced by Juana Uribe, and stars Diana Hoyos (Oye bonita), Salvador del Solar and Nicolás Montero. Shot 70% on location, the story is set in the 1950’s and focuses on the impossible love between a

self-conflicted boxer and a woman ahead of her time that fakes her death and imperson-ates a man in order to enjoy greater freedom.

According to Germán Porras, one of the directors, the main ingredi-ents are romance, suspense, and intrigue. “It is one of the most ambitious projects in terms of directing and production,” he added.

The other director, Andrés Biermann, with vast experience directing commercials and TV, offered an example: “We recently shot a scene with 300 actors in a dance hall and we needed to show the different layers of people: some talking, some

drinking, others dancing; all of it with big band trumpets in the background. We set up elaborate scenes like this everyday and I think it will excite viewers.”

Costumes are also a key part of the telenovela’s structure, and makeup artists and costume designers are working hard. “We have been improving our speed, because there are days, as in the director’s example, in which we have to dress 300 extras,” said Óscar Buitrago, the production’s makeup designer. The style features women with dark hair and men with pronounced sideburns. “We did not want to use fake mustaches or blond hair. Instead, we decided to enhance

natural facial features such as thick eyebrows or marked ears to give them more character,” added Buitrago.

Juana Uribe, general producer said that the project is, without a doubt, a super production, not only because of cost but also because of the great challenges in executing it. She praised the work of the art and costume departments, as well as the cast. “We managed a cast that sets us in the period,” she said, adding that there aren’t any actors with obvious cosmetic surgery, since that was not common back in the period.

Like many other Underground fictions, Un año para recordar has a magical ingredient. The story revolves around an unhappily married woman who, by miracle, will go back in time and change everything she did in the last year.

“Un año para recordar is the perfect follower for Los exitosos Pells. This new romantic comedy created by Sebastián Ortega tells a story that captivates the entire household because is set on a familiar backdrop: a supermarket; where everyone can relate to a different situation. Additionally, the play on time makes viewers ponder how much can they manipulate or play with their own fates,” said

DevelopmentUn año para recordar has been three years in the making. It was originally set to premiere in 2009 on Telefe, but station executives changed strategies and its debut was postponed. This situation gave producers more time to work on it: “We’ve been developing the narrative for two or three years, and we were also able to better develop the characters,” Sebas-tián Ortega, owner of production house Underground.

The results were seen on its debut night. The telenovela premiered in mid February in primetime on Telefe of Argentina with a 41% share, and it became the highest rated show in its timeslot (9:30pm). Since then, it has maintained a 35% share.

to the worlDThe telenovela was presented at Natpe 2011, before its premiere in Argentina, and “it was a sensation among buyers due to its family-oriented theme, aesthetics, original concept and screenplay, and a wonderful cast led by the renowned Carla Peterson,” said Wasserman.

“At the upcoming Mip we’ll be presenting a more developed story, some episodes of which have already aired. Our Euro-pean clients have expressed great interest, which makes us hopeful about this market,” added Wasserman.

Additionally, Ortega said that Ventana rosa, Salma Hayek’s production company, bought the format and its already adapting and translating some books.

Luis Daniel Capriles, VP of Digital Media International Sales at Telemundo Internacional, said there is great demand for multi-platform content in the international markets. This is because “the ultra-convergence is no longer a local phenomenon restricted to the U.S. market. Instead, it is a global reality where countries such as Spain, Mexico and Brazil, among others, have started acquiring many hours of content for on-demand platforms.”

He said that at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona, consid-ered the world’s most important event for the mobile telecommu-

nications industry, “it was demonstrated how high-quality content worldwide has gained penetration to new fast-distribu-tion technologies.”

Capriles also said that MipTV 2011 would be another stage to prove that their content keeps evolving and being broadcast over the various platforms.

Much to offerThis MipTV, Telemundo Interna-cional is promoting its entire available catalog for new plat-forms. It includes current telenovelas and classic ones.
