What is Website Optimization
• Website optimization in part is the procedures used to optimize – or design – a website so it ranks well in search engines.
• Also known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
• SEO is the process of enhancing the visibility of a brand's web presence in organic (think “unpaid”) search.
• SEO is a long-term traffic strategy– And as such, you really should invest time and
money into making sure it’s done right!
How SEO & Search Engines Work
Tips & Tools to Choose the Right Keywords
• Who is your ideal or dream client?• Who is your target audience?• Your dream clients may not use the
same words you, as an expert, use.• Create a list (check old emails, articles,
old blog posts, yahoo answers, your social media, create a survey) of the keywords that people use to describe your product or services.
The Mad Hatter Is Definitely Rather Loony
• T: Title tag• M: Meta description • H: Header tags: H1, H2, H3• I: Image file names and alt tags• D: Diverse keywords• R: Relevancy• L: Reputable links
Page Title Tags• Title should describe what your page is about• 69 characters or less
Meta Description
Post Titles & Header Tags• H1, • H2, • H3 • H4• H5• H6
Image File Names and Alt Tags
When it comes to image files names and alt tags …
• Always give your images a real name • Always give your images an alt tag (alternative text tag) • They tell search engines what your page is about• They're essential for accessibility
– Specialist software used by people with visual impairment reads them out, so you should have them describe what the image is about. They also appear in place of a picture if a reader has images switched off.
• Use keywords in your image alt tags and picture filenames so search engines see them as another piece of important content on your site
Diversity, Relevancy & Reputable Links
Diversity & Relevancy
• What other words can you use to describe what you do and what you offer?
• Check out your competition• Google now wants to see that you’re using a wide variety of other
relevant words and terms in your content.• For example, if you’re writing about web design, you’d probably
include words like internet, website and design.• The search engines and visitors expect to see relevant content on a
pageReputable links• Get listed in as many reputable and related websites as possible• Linking is still the biggest ranking factor, and everything you've
done so far will help to make your site more link-worthy.
Optimizing your Site & Pages• Use a SEO friendly platform, like self-hosted WordPress• Go mobile! Your site needs to be seen
across all devices – More than half of over 100 billion monthly search requests are
coming from mobile devices• Google rewards sites that are mobile friendly• Make sure your site loads quickly• Use anchor text (hyperlinks) • Have prominent calls to action (no scrolling)• Display your contact info: NAP (name, address phone)• Localize your content if you’re looking for local clients• Provide honest testimonials and an honest “About Us” page• Check out LocalSEOChecklist.org, Yext.com and Synup.com• Make sure your keyword is in your post URL and your title• Use keywords as close to the beginning as makes sense• Write for humans, not for search engines
Optimizing your Site & Pages• Use software to see how people are finding your site
– SEO by Yoast– Google Analytics
• Keep your site updated with fresh content• Consider blogging• Content marketing is important• Make sure your pages have at least 400 words or more -
Google prefers this• According to recent research by Searchmetrics, the
average word count of the highest-ranking pages is 1,285!• Use lists and interactive elements to structure your content• Structure your content so it’s as easy to ready as possible• Proofread your pages and make sure you don’t have errors
Market & Advertise• Don’t forget, now that your site is live, use
what you’ve got! • Use an auto-signature• Your customer list• Mailing list• Social media• Content marketing • Digital advertising• Your friends at DayngrZone Media!
