generate new information and educational material related to the history of the field. The

raison d’etre of the Network is to facilitate communication between

neuropsychopharmacologists of different generations and professional backgrounds, and

thereby provide a more solid foundation for future development of the field.

Project One (Dictionary – Thomas A. Ban). Historical Dictionary in

Neuropsychopharmacology

A comprehensive vocabulary of terms/words used in the different areas of research in

neuropsychopharmacology and in education and clinical practice with psychotropic drugs.

Each entry is self-contained and fully comprehensible without reference to other work

and includes, as much as possible, the name of the person who coined the term (word) and

the publication in which it first appeared; provides the original definition of the term and

changes in the definition, if applicable; describes how the definition was derived

(observation, experimentation, logic, etc.); and indicates the first application of the term in

neuropsychopharmacology. Each statement is referenced with the original publication.

Comments on entries are restricted to correction of factual information, and queries regarding

how the concept was derived if unclear. Entries are listed in alphabetical order of

8

terms/words. Comments and replies follow the respective entry and are kept open

indefinitely.

Project Two (Drugs - Eric Konofal). Historical Drug Inventory of Psychotropic Drugs

A comprehensive collection of drugs with an effect on behavior and mental activity,

and/or in use in the pharmacotherapy of psychiatric/neurological disorders; and/or in

research in neuropsychopharmacology.

Each entry is self-contained and fully comprehensible without reference to other work

and includes information on each step in the development of the product from the discovery/

synthesis of the molecule/structure, the starting point in the development of the substance

(e.g., phenylisopropylamine for amphetamine, phenothiazine nucleus for chlorpromazine),

until the synthesis of the final product. Characterization of the final product (the subject

matter of the entry) is restricted to pharmacological actions recorded by behavioral,

neurophysiological, and molecular measures, relevant to the therapeutic (verified and/or

approved by regulation) and adverse effects of the substance, and/or its use in

neuropsychopharmacological research. Each statement is referenced with the original

publication. Comments on entries are restricted to correction of, or addition to factual

information with reference, and queries regarding how relationship(s) between

pharmacological actions and clinical effect were derived. Entries are listed in alphabetical

order of drugs identified by their generic names. Comments and replies follow the respective

entry and are kept open indefinitely.

Project Three (Photos – Carlos Morra). Photo History of Neuropsychopharmacology

A series of photos of individuals with major contributions to the devlopment of

neuropsychopharmacology (macrohistory) presented in chronology from the early 19th

century to present. It also includes individual photos with one or more person on the photo,

and collection of photos of individual(s) who contributed to development (microhistory) of

the field.

In individual photos, each individual on the photo, as well as the time and place the

photo was taken, are identified from left to right (clockwise) and row by row. In collection of

photos, the time and place the photos were taken in the collection are identified as well as the

individual(s) on each photo, as in “individual photo(s)”. In (historical) series of photos the

year of birth and death of individuals on each photo of the series, as well as their

contribution(s) to the development of neuropsychopharmacology (with reference to the

original publication) is (are) identified. Individual photos, including one individual on the

photo or a group, are listed in alphabetical order by the name of the individual on the photo,

or in case of group photo by the name of the person at the utmost left of the photo with all

other names listed, indented in alphabetical order below. Collection of photos are listed in

chronology of events the photos in the collection were taken, ordered as individual photos

within the collection. Historical series of photos are listed alphabetically by the name of the

authors of the series.
