1 . In your own words who is Kellee Maize?

I change from moment to moment, living in the present effected by the past. I am a rapper, singer, actress, and

entrepreneur. I am a seeker, spiritual in nature but not really religions.

2.What drives you to be successful?

I look to make an impact, more specifically to be a positive impact on people and their lives. The feedback of those

around me drives me in business and in music. Overall, I grew up in family that was hardworking. I just grew up with

that mentality.

3 . Finish this sentence “In five years I will be…”

Hmmmm…… wow. In five years I will be touring regularly, beginning a family, and heavily studying various healing

arts.

4. What makes you smile?

Other people’s smiles. I am effected by the environment and its energy. Children always make me smile. My close

friends and people around me keep me laughing as well.

5. What gave you the inspiration to become an MC?

I just became present to being an MC. At the age of 9 I heard Salt and Pepa and fell in love with hip hop. As a kid I

had my own group Thunder and Lightening, and we did one song. Throughout my life I have been really driven to

understand the art on MCing, but never really had a confidence to do it. In college, my poetry teacher played the song

My IQ by Ani DiFranco. In the song, you could feel her passion and desire to transform. This gave me my inspiration

to do it. My teacher ultimately gave me the confidence to express my poetic talents, pushed me to become an MC.

6. Do you think chivalry is dead?

No. I’m actually one of those women who has a visceral reaction if he walks and opens the door for me. That extra

step isn’t needed, but at the same time I really appreciate that. I really believe that with both men and women, being

caring and loving toward another person is what chivalry is. It is something that women should do as well. If you are

capable of helping then help!

Kellee Maize is a very dynamic and transcendent MC hailing from the city of

Pittsburgh. In addition to her passion for music, she is also the founder of Nakturnal

LLC, a female-owned and operated agency focused on bringing together arts and

corporate communities to create a more vibrant music & entertainment scene.

Known for disseminating lyrics that seek to enlighten and motivate the listener,

Kellee Maize is a multi-faceted woman who consistently demonstrates that she is

political, passionate, and powerful.

Page 6: Webster Style Magazine Quarterly

Women of Webster: Kellee Maize7. I f you could do or be anything, what would it be and why?

I would seek to be the wealthiest person on the planet. I am constantly disturbed by the fact that

people are starving. I ts sad that a large majoring of the wealth is control led by so few and their sight

is so blurry on what they should do with that wealth. I would feed those who are hungry and dying

especial ly the children. I would do that in one fel l swoop. Hopeful ly it would increase pressure

8. What qualities do you expect a Webster Man to have or demonstrate?

Being kind and community oriented or philanthropic. He needs to show that its not just about him and his

circumstances, he needs to demonstrate an awareness of the issues and world around him. He needs to be a

global thinker.

9. What is one secret about women that you think al l men should know?

We as women do like to be taken care of and we want take care of you as well . Our nurturing side is very innate

with women, but both have to nurture each other mental ly, spiritual ly, and physical ly. Also l istening is love.

Listening to another person is a real way to show that you love them. So many times we spend so much time in

conversations thinking about what we are going to say next instead of l istening and absorbing what is being said.

Webster Style Spotlight: Bacon Handmade NeckwearWho doesn’t l ike bacon? While that smokey, crispy, soft

meat product can be found in everything from a Rooty Tooty

Fresh & Fruity, to sundaes, to soap (yes there is bacon

soap!), we have found a new love of bacon in the form of

Bacon Handmade Neckwear. No the neckwear isn’t made

of bacon, yet there is an intrinsic goodness to the neckwear

A line dedicated to making neckwear (neckties, bowties,

necklaces) for men, women, boys and girls that is versati le

Essential Apps for the 21st Century Urbanite by Harry Crosland

I t’s been four years since the release of the iPhone

and the revolution of the smartphone industry. Our

phones can do more now than they could 1 0 years ago

and some of us wonder how we managed to go day-to-

day without them. So, say that you are a recent

iPhone or iPad owner or you have an android device

and you feel l ike your ‘smart’ device feel kind of

‘dumb’. How do you get the most out of it? In this

article, I wil l tel l you about some of the apps that you

as an Urban MaleNor Female, should not be without.

Of course the disclaimer: Not al l of the apps listed

below works for al l devices. Check your manufacturer

for availabi l ity. Also, be mindful that many apps use

data and that you should check accordingly with your

carrier to make sure that you have a suitable data plan.

Breaking News

First up is the CNN

App.Everything that you

need to know national ly or

international ly is right here.

This app even has

streaming video in which

you can see the latest news

live. The only drawback is

that it’s not customizable to

your local area so if you

want something more

localized, your best bets

may be the LA Times,

Washington Post, New York

Times or even USA Today.

I t’s hard to be on top of the news if you don’t have the right app for the job.

6

8

Page 10: Webster Style Magazine Quarterly

Essential Apps for the 21st Century Urbanite by Harry CroslandNext up is the Pulse news reader

app.

This is a very easy to use and

easy to set up app. I t’s available

for most tablet devices and on

android devices. This is

essential ly an RSS Reader and

what it can do is take what you

have in Google reader and turns it

into a nice categorized news

reader that gives up to date news

based on your l ikes and your

taste. This is the way you can get

al l of your tech news, gaming

news or sports news all in one

easy package. I t’s a good

package as long as you have a

good connection because most of

the articles somehow goes to the

website. I just wish that even

offl ine, it could store your pictures.

Next up is my faveNFlipboard.

This works similar to Pulse but it’s

in a snazzier package. One of the

differences is most of the RSS

feeds pulled but it gives this app

more of a magazine type feel. I t’s

real ly cool but suffers from the

same drawback as Pulse whereas

when you are without a connection,

you lose some of the images.

Another drawback is that unl ike

Pulse you are l imited to the amount

of feeds you can load into the main

pages. But between the two, I l ike

Flipboard. Two runners up are

Taptu and Zite.

Essential Apps for the 21st Century Urbanite by Harry CroslandI Got Game Are you a sports junkie on the go? Need your fix? Look no further than your

phone because there are a few apps that have you covered.

ESPN ScoreCenter

Keep up with al l of your teams with

ESPN. I t’s real ly easy and simple to

use. You can customize it to fol low all

of your favorite teams and it real ly

shines on tablet devices because of

some of the extra features you can

get. Just l ike the news readers, you

need a wifi connection to use, but if

you think this is cool:

ESPN Radio

What more is there to say? If you want to hear what’s going on, it’s al l right here. All the local markets

are features and for Spanish speakers, ESPN Desportes is available and it’s l ive. Also if you have a

favorite ESPN podcast you like, they are all here too.

But for the ultimate ESPN Fan, this is not complete unless you have this:

Watch ESPN

Yes. You can watch ESPN on your smartphone or tablet. Yes. The app is free. Yes it’s l ive as long as

you are connected. Anything that has also been broadcast recently is available for play across all of

the ESPN channels. This is a sports junkie’s dream but it does have a slight drawback. On smaller

NFL Mobile

A football lover’s dream come true. As long as you are a

Verizon customer, this free app gives you access to the

NFL Channel as well as the RedZone. So if you are stuck at

a friend’s house and they refuse to turn from the Browns

getting their butts kicked , you can whip this app out and

see the rest of what’s going on at game time! This app

stays on whatever device I have.

Essential Apps for the 21st Century Urbanite by Harry CroslandI t's Movie Night

Out and aboutNbored and not near a TVNbut you got a strong connection.

What can you watch on the fly?

Crackle

Thought that Netfl ix had the corner of the

market for movies? Nope. Crackle is a

good alternative for those that don’t want

to shell out the dough for Netfl ix. This app

has a lot of old school titles and a lot of

original shows on it, so yes it does lack the

polish its competitor but sti l l , nothing beats

free.

Netfl ix

Sti l l the undisputed king of streaming movies,

this is a must! But also this is a time when it

sucks to be an android user, but you have to

blame your phone manufacturer for this as not al l

android devices cannot use this app. I f you are

an iOS device, it’s not a problem. This app lets

me watch Law and Order, Star Trek or whatever

movie or show at the touch of my

fingersNanywhere there is a connection and

best of al l no extra charge! I f you don’t have it,

find out if you can get it and get to watchingNof

course you know, you need to have a Netfl ix

subscription right?

Spandex on the Go

What's on the good ol Radio?

Comixology

If you are a comic junkie l ike I am, then Comixology is

a no brainer. This is a good way to get a lot of your

favorites in an easy to read digital format. All of the top

companies also have a company specific app including

Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, IDW and Image. Most comics

cost sl ightly less than the paper version and many

have begun releasing day and date comics digital

copies to coincide with paper comics.

Ok, I won’t l ieNI am not a fan of Pandora. Yes I

said it. Maybe it’s because I am at a point where it’s

certain music that I l ike and that’s fine for me but if

you want it on the go, I have two suggestions:

I f you are Sirius about your music:

Yes, there is an app for it. As long as you have a

plan set up with Sirius XM, you can enjoy all the

offerings for Sirius XM radio. I wil l say this, on

Android devices, this app can and wil l drain your

battery so if you intend on listening to it for long

periods of time, keep your device connected to a

power source. Another great thing about this app

is you don’t need to buy an actual unit to enjoy it

and it’s great for long trips in the car without

having to find a channel when you lose the local

signal.

I t’s Wunderful! !

Wunder Radio is by far one of the best radio

apps I have used. You can use it to tune just

about any radio station in the world. I t can

also be used to pick up a few internet stations

along the way. Also, this app can pull ESPN

radio stations. This app is 5 bucks and it’s the

best way to get as much radio as you like.

So that’s my list of some of the apps you should have on our smart phone. Remember, check with

your carrier about data usage and remember these apps can change at any time. Enjoy and if you

have any suggestions, please drop a me at l ine on twitter @dreddeddeuce.

A Side of Fashion: The Men’s Guide to Accessorizing by Jason Mathis

Who doesn’t anticipate their center cut 8

oz. being presented without being drizzled

with steak sauce accompanied by mashed

potatoes and broccoli . What is a

Thanksgiving feast with a turkey lacking the

company of dressing, greens, macaroni

and cheese, yams, and hot, buttered rol ls?

What’s a movie experience without the

salty popcorn or cheesy nachos? It’s al l just

plain and boring, as is an outfit unadorned

with accessories. Daily, our female

counterparts rummage through jewelry

boxes trying to locate the perfect earrings,

necklace, and bracelet to compliment their

selected garments. They sift through an

assortment of colors, shapes, and sizes to

find the perfect match. While men may

seem to have limited options on earrings,

bracelets, and chains, we should not l imit

ourselves to just these standard “side

dishes” of mens fashion.

In order to understand how to accessorize

we must first recognize the options

available to us beyond the standard pieces

of jewelry. Mens accessories can be broken

down into the fol lowing categories:

footwear, waist wear, wrist wear, neckwear,

and head/eye wear. I bel ieve every outfit

should have a “pop piece”, something that

brings the outfit to l ife. Some men stay

away from accessorizing because they

want to be inconspicuous and avoid being

labeled as flashy. I t’s possible to have “pop”

without being flashy. Let’s explore.

You might be asking how footwear fits in the category of

an accessory. True, shoes are a standard part of any

outfit. However, according to Webster’s dictionary, an

accessory is “something added for decoration.” Shoes can

add to or destroy an outfit, so, for purposes of fashion,

footwear can double as an accessory. The first concept to

understand about footwear is that black does not go with

everything. Many men wil l have one pair of dress shoes

and wear it with every dressy or casual outfit they put on.

I t’s okay to push the envelope with your shoes. I ’m not

encouraging you to purchase every color shoe that Stacy

Adams manufactures, but you should own more than

black and brown. The basics would be black, brown, blue,

grey, and white. You should also invest in various shades

of brown to ensure that you have the necessary variety for

coordinating with the many earth-tone shades found in

your closet. On the other end of the spectrum, the basic

white tennis shoe or now classic grey New Balances don’t

go with every dress down look either. Nike, Converse,

Steve Madden, and even Timberland have made it easy

for men to expand the colors they place on their feet. As

men, we can have on a nice pair of jeans and a

plain/graphic tee and destroy the entire look by throwing

on the first pair of sneakers we see. Take the time to

examine your wardrobe and purchase shoes that wil l

compliment or bring out even the smallest detai l in your

shirts. I f you are wearing an outfit where your belt is

visible, try coordinating the shoes with the belt.

12

14

Page 16: Webster Style Magazine Quarterly

A Side of Fashion: The Men’s Guide to Accessorizing by Jason Mathis

That is another important fact; a black belt does not go with every outfit. As much as possible your belt

should be congruent with the color scheme of your outfit, especial ly if your shirt is tucked into your pants. I f

wearing a solid color on top and bottom, with the shoe you select, coordinate the belt to match the shoe

and let those become your focal point. Simple, yet effective. For the more casual looks the canvas or cloth

belts are a great option and are available in a plethora of colors. Additional ly, there are belts with

removable buckles giving you the option to be more expressive at the waistl ine by choosing anything but

the standard buckle. Be creative as you want with the buckle you select as it can be your “pop piece” al l by

itself.

"There is nothing wrong with the classic watch."

12

14

15

Page 17: Webster Style Magazine Quarterly

A Side of Fashion: The Men’s Guide to Accessorizing by Jason Mathis

Another simple way to add life to your outfit is with wrist wear. The world has moved beyond the silver,

gold, black or brown leather and rubber bands with plain black or white faces. You can now get a wrist

watch in any color imaginable with any color face imaginable. There is nothing wrong with the classic

watch. I t has its place. Yet in a world where everybody has easy access to the cell phone on their hip, the

watch has become more of a symbol of fashion than a time tel l ing mechanism. Take advantage and fasten

color and style on your wrist. Stores such as Fossil offer the luxury of building your own watch by allowing

you to select your band and face separately with the end result being 50% your own creation. Cuff l inks

natural ly fal l into this same category. They come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes ranging from

subtle to extravagant. The cuff l ink is not just for the business suit or church look. With more patterned

shirts being offered with French cuffs you can grab your l inks when heading to a dinner date or casual

gathering. I t’s a great sophisticated look resting unassumingly at the bottom of your arms.

16

Page 18: Webster Style Magazine Quarterly

A Side of Fashion: The Men’s Guide to Accessorizing by Jason Mathis

Moving up, the next accessory category is

neckwear. The necktie wil l always be a

classic accessory, but if you have been

paying attention you have noticed that both

the bowtie and ascot have become

extremely popular. With more workplaces

becoming more casual and contemporary

churches fostering a more relaxed

atmosphere ties are becoming less

mandatory and more fashionable. For

instance, who would have pictured Chuck

Taylors, jeans or casual pants, a button

down with the sleeves rol led up halfway,

and an open vest, topped off with a bowtie

being a good look? It is comfortable, trendy,

and great for any casual or laid back

atmosphere. You could also create a similar

look using an ascot or regular necktie.

Leave the top buttons undone on your shirt

and allow the necktie to hang just below tied

the normal way. This gives you a more

relaxed look at the neckline while sti l l being

fashionable. Traditional ly ascots are worn

with suits and give you a very sophisticated

and European look. Break the tradition and

wear your ascot with the same outfit

described above, but with a twist. Instead of

going for the traditional method, al low the

ascot to be worn directly around your neck

resting on your chest while leaving your top

two buttons undone. With this one little

variation and you have a completely

different look and effect. The possibi l ities

with neckwear are numerous. Challenge

yourself to try something different.

16 17

Page 19: Webster Style Magazine Quarterly

A Side of Fashion: The Men’s Guide to Accessorizing by Jason Mathis

Topping off the accessory categories for men is headwear/eyewear. Sunglasses are as much about

fashion as they are about uti l i ty. So many styles and colors are offered from sporty to high fashion.

Match your eyewear to a garment in your outfit and watch how it becomes a must for the outfit and not

just a shield from the sun. Just as sunglasses have a dual role, so do hats. Many men don’t wear hats

simply because they are attempting to keep their head warm or hide a bad hair day. Hats come in

many varieties and can alter the look of any outfit. Just be careful not to just grab the one at the front of

the closet al l the time. Pair your hat with your shirt or shoes and add the extra flavor to your outfit.

Make sure the hat fits your head and doesn’t swallow your face; unless that is the effect you are going

for. A “fitted” or cap is appropriate for the dressed down outfits and so is a scul ly/beanie during the

winter months. For the more casual or dressy attire consider a Kango style, bucket hat, bowler/derby,

fedora, flat cap, homburg, or newsboy cap. Whatever you choose coordination is essential .

Women are quick to proclaim that their man is plain, simple and boring

when it comes to dressing. Many of them secretly wish you spiced it up a

little bit more. I t is not necessary to transform your entire wardrobe to

accomplish this. Simply learn to accessorize. Just remember one

thingNaccessories should enhance without overpowering. Accessorize to

the extent that you feel comfortable but know that every entrée is better

with a side dish. Indulge in a side of fashion!

Why Mr. Smith Can't Go to Washington and How We Can Change it. by Elden Hawkes

In many ways Frank Capra’s Mr. Smith Goes To Washington has

become an allegory for the how the “common man” can go to

Washington and make a difference. Yet when the “common man” looks

at those who are running for public office especial ly national offices l ike

the presidency, the “common man” is nowhere to be seen. I myself l ike

many other voters have a hard time feeling that multi-mil l ionaires can

understand and empathize with the daily trials and tribulations of the

majority of the population of the United States.

In many ways, the general populous is jaded with the current system

because of the inordinate influence of monied interests on politics. The

pursuit of business and monetary gain isn’t wrong, but one has to

question how the very pursuit of is influencing elections away from the

thoughts, minds, and general bel iefs and well-being of the “common

man”. This is not just some preconceived notion of the my own mind,

but it is a phenomenon that is very much persistent in our political

structure. Just look at the current top of the field GOP presidential

candidates. Second time candidate Mitt Romney has an estimate net

worth of $1 90 mil l ion to $250 mil l ion and outside of his time as

Governor of Massachusetts, he hasn’t had a real job since 2007. His

mil l ions were made as the co-founder Bain Capital, a private equality

firm that manages approximately $65 bil l ion in assets. How many of the

“common man” can be unemployed for four years and launch a credible

and financial ly stable bid to be president of the United States? The

other top-tier GOP candidate Newt Gingrich has had a different

background of how his money was made compared to Romney, yet has

a net worth estimated to be about $7 mil l ion (President Obama’s net

worth is about $5 Mil l ion). While this is dwarfed by Romney, Gingrich’s

net worth far exceeds what the “common man” makes in a l ifetime let

alone in a year.

None of the above is to disparage any man or woman’s personal

success. However one does have to question when one is that wealthy

and has been wealthy for an extensive period of time ( in some cases

their whole l ives), how in touch are they with the needs of the mother of

four that works double shifts to make sure that food is in the pantry?

Does a candidate l ike Jon Huntsman (estimated net worth $1 6-$71

mil l ion) real ly understand the issues that a husband deals with as he

works four jobs to pay a mortgage and support a wife who has been

actively looking for a new job since her position was phased out due to

corporate mergers almost two years ago? The general concurrence

would be no! How could they understand? The perceived and relative

out of touch (let us say disconnected) condition of many of those that

seek political office leave many voter to simply throw their hands up in

surrender. Unfortunately this disconnect is only part of the problem.

Legislative Branch Term Limits

As a member of Congress (particularly the House of

Representatives) you are always in campaign mode. I t is

total ly understood that one cannot get anything truly and

definitively accomplished in a mere on term in Congress,

however there is no reason that any person should dwell

in the hall of either house of Congress for more than a

generation. Between is short stint in the House of

Representatives and is tenure as Senator, the late Robert

Byrd was in Washington a total of 57 years. To but that in

a person perspective, Sen. Byrd was first elected before

both of my parents were born (1 955 & 1 958 respectively).

Such longevity breeds a progressive disconnect from the

“common man” and is a gross abuse of the political

system. Also with the exhaustive task of running a re-

election campaign always looming over head, many

elected officials are forced to spend most of their time

fundraising instead of governing. In order to el iminate

these cracks in the system, term limits should be

instituted for the legislative branch. Twelve years (2 terms

Senate & 6 terms House of representatives) is more than

enough time for any elected official to learn the legislative

process and become an effective representative of their

constituents. At the end of the day any sitting president

only has the opportunity for 8 years or two terms, why

should Congress be any different?

Public Campaign Funding

As stated with the advent the Citizens United,

corporate spending is at an all time high.

Candidates a perceived frontrunners and

favorites not because of the amount of public

support that one garners, but because of the

amount of money that they have been able to

obtain through fundraising. What does one’s

abil ity to govern fairly and effectively have to

do with their abil ity to fundraising?

Absolutely nothing! Fundraising or the

influence that effective fundraising brings can

often time over shadow legitimate ideas and

policy positions. Allowing individuals and

corporations to donate via taxes to a public

financing fund would el iminate the influence

that often arises from the current structure. A

set amount would be given to those

candidates that qualify during the primary

season. The remaining fund being equally

divided amongst the candidates during the

general election.

Why Mr. Smith Can't Go to Washington and How We Can Change it. by Elden Hawkes

Party Line Primaries

When some speak about the apparent problems with

our political structure, many site the current dominance

of the the two party system as one of the main culprits.

While many arguments for and against the current

system have merit, the biggest problem is the current

state of primary elections. While some states allow any

registered voter to vote in the primary for either party,

many restrict voting in primaries to those that are

registered with the affi l iated party. This in effect

disenfranchises those that are registered as

independents (and those of the rival party when they

don’t hold a primary). Primaries should be open to to

al l registered voters. In theory, this would al low more

mainstream candidates and ideas to spring forth

during primary season. I t would also allow more of the

electorate be involved in the process earl ier.

Can Mr. Smith sti l l go to Washington? In many ways

this is the true question of our political system. In a

system that is designed to be for the people and by the

people, the people have been replace by the dollar.

Only when the people and their interest become the

focus of the system again wil l Mr. Smith be able to go

back to Washington.
