Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is in- terrupted on his journey by "a woman afflicted with hemorrhages." The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning. Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disappoint- ment, or unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some re- spects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversations with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. Howev- er, we can believe the words of our Lord. July 1, 2018 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time !Today's Gospel offers a rare framework !! a story in a story.

Most of the healing miracles are stand!alone encounters. One per-son approaches Jesus, demonstrates faith, and is healed. The evan-gelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is in-terrupted on his journey by "a woman afflicted with hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually un-clean from her bleeding, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and continues on to resurrect the young girl.

Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with one sto-ry !! the long!suffering woman or the young, innocent girl !! and to move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning.

Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disappoint-ment, or unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some re-spects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversations with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. Howev-er, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace."

Anchor kids in the truth that Jesus carries them through life’s storms.” Each day at Shipwrecked VBS, kids travel through field!tested rotations that reinforce relevant Bible points and immerse kids in new adventures. Registration will begin at 8:30 Monday, July 23 at St. John’s Church. Please consider lending your talents for a week. From Fr. LaBaff: !!

Summer 2018!Thank you for taking the time to come to church

today. July 4th is always a time to celebrate what we are, what we have, and what has been given to us. God has blessed us abundantly and it is absolutely necessary that we stop and look and see what we have. There are so many men and women who have sacri-ficed so much and as a result we have what we have. It is not perfect and there are many flaws in our socie-ty, our nation. All of us need to work together to see that this country remains a beacon for us and for the world. Thank God for what we have and exercise your right to improve what we have.

!

After Mass Refreshments/Socials!Following Masses at St. Mary’s on Saturday even-

ing or Sunday morning there will be refreshments in the Parish Center. Take a few minutes for this social before going on to other events you have planned for remainder of your day.

!

It’s Our Church It’s Our Future! We are beginning a Capital Campaign to raise six-

teen million dollars in our diocese. 75% of the funds raised will remain in our parishes for projects that need our attention. The 25% going to the diocese is to provide for our retired priests, educating seminarians, improving Camp Guggenheim, and supporting critical repairs to our Mother Church, St. Mary’s Cathedral.

At the receptions on July 8 and 11, we will explain the needs of the parishes and facts about the Cam-paign. I sincerely am asking that you attend one of the receptions to obtain further information.

Information on Religious Freedom!

According to Open Doors (a U.S.!based organization that tracks the global persecution of Christians), every month 322 Christians are killed because of their faith, 214 Christian churches/properties are destroyed, and 722 crimes (such as beatings, false arrests, rapes) are committed against Christians because of their faith. These are sobering numbers. Yet, they are not mere numbers; they are our brothers and sisters in Christ. Here in the US, religious persecution seems to be a far!off, “over there” occurrence. However, what is called our “first, most cherished liberty” is constantly being attacked in our secular society. In order to raise aware-ness regarding persecution and our need to safeguard religious freedom, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops declare a “Religious Freedom Week. All are encouraged to pray for religious freedom for all. For more info, visit www.usccb.org and search “Religious Liberty”.!

A Prayer for Religious LibertyFather, We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Amen.

Did You Know...!!!! by Judy Pearson!

Thoughts On Independence Day !!

On Wednesday, July 4, our nation celebrates Inde-pendence Day. The following article, taken in its en-tirety, was written by Bishop James D. Conley, Bishop of the Diocese of Lincoln, NE and appeared in the January 2013 issue of Magnificat. It has a good mes-sage for us today.

“In his powerful and profound Letter from the Bir-mingham Jail, Dr. Martin Luther King said the Consti-tution and Declaration together form the ‘great wells of democracy’ that express ‘the most sacred values in our Judeo!Christian heritage.’ King was right. Our country was not founded to be a theocracy. But our country is also unimaginable without reference to the values of our Judeo!Christian heritage. America’s founded shared common belief that religion mattered!not only for the private salvation and welfare of indi-viduals, but also for the commonweal of the nation.

Charles Carrol, the declaration’s only Catholic sig-natory, put it well in a letter to James McHenry, one of the signers of the Constitution: Without morals a re-public can not subsist any length of time; they there-fore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure…are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments…

America’s future depends today, as it always has, on the choices that faithful citizens will make. And that means rediscovering the basic religious and Chris-tian values that are contained in our Declaration of Independence. It means living out our beliefs with what the declaration calls a ‘firm reli-ance on the protection of divine Providence.’ And through our witness to our beliefs, and by God’s grace, we can help re-

Young Adults (1839) Survey: If you are a young adult in the Diocese of Ogdensburg between the ages of 18!39 whether single or married, with or without kids, the Office of Young Adults wants to hear from you! To ascertain needs, interests, and ways that the Office of Young Adult Ministry can better support you, please help us by filling out the survey which can be found at www.rcdony.org/young!adult!ministry/survey.html. Thank you.

A Prayer for Our Nation!Almighty God, bless our nation and make it true to the ideas of freedom and justice for all. Guard us from war, from fire and wind, fear, confusion. Be close to our president and our statesmen; give them vision and courage, as they ponder decisions affecting peace and the future of the world. Make me more deeply aware of my heritage; realizing not only my rights but also my duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Make this land and all its people know clearly Your will, that they may fulfill the destiny ordained for us in the salvation of the nations, and the restoring of all things in Christ. Amen
