Something NewIn the process of producing this issue of Weddings Illustrated, my team and I sifted

through hundreds of ideas for flowers, decor, cakes, invitations, gowns, gifts and

practically every other element necessary for a fabulous affair. In evaluating all

these images and concepts, it became clear that the most memorable weddings

came down to one thing: a creative interpretation of your personal brand.

And why not? Today, branding is the preferred avenue for creating buzz,

building an image and telling stories that people remember—and it’s just as

appropriate for individuals as it is for companies. Forge your brand and reinforce

it, and you are on your way to achieving that elusive “wow” factor that separates

the exceptional from the ordinary.

You can read more about creating your own brand in our “Ask the Expert”

section, on page 30. Event guru Nathalie Cadet-James, of Luxe Fête in Miami,

talks about the importance of branding in creating memorable occasions, and

also offers tips on taking that brand to the next level through design.

The real weddings we feature in these pages are prime examples of this

concept. In “Vintage Elegance” (page 68), we show how one couple wove

references to their families and cultural traditions into a truly personalized affair

that was reflective of both their taste and their history. In “Garden Party” (page

58), we highlight the nuptials of two doctors who created a fantasy garden,

complete with gorgeous white flowers, vines and an ironwork gate, sharing

with their guests their love of nature and all things organic. And in “Enchanted Evening” (page

64), we feature an intimate wedding inspired by the bride’s keen eye for fashion and her passion

for jewelry design.

If you are planning your own grand affair and thinking about your brand, take a look at

“Perfectly Staged,” on page 40. We have gathered some of our favorite ideas for table settings,

floral expressions, lounges and room decor from top vendors around the state. Perhaps it will

inspire you on imaginative ways to incorporate such crucial elements as color, lighting, textures

and materials, and those small, thoughtful touches that leave the biggest impression.

And there is so much more, including fairy-tale wedding gowns with elaborate details and

embellishments, luxurious honeymoons on the seven seas, makeup tips from a red-carpet pro

and the season’s most dramatic pearl jewelry. Every page is representative of our highly curated

approach for bringing you the best of the best for your special day. That is our brand, after all.

Successfully pulling off a wed-

ding takes balance and creativity.

Nathalie A. Cadet-James, found-

er of Luxe Fête Event Planning and

Design Studio in Miami uses her ex-

perience as an interior designer to

elegantly blend the couple’s style,

the ambience and the attitude into

a chic affair. Cadet-James shares

her secrets for a memorable eve-

ning. —Lola Thélin

WI: How does a bride decide on her wedding atmosphere?

CADET-JAMES: Personalizing a wedding is as easy as asking your-

selves, “Who are we and what defines our relationship?” Once you nar-

row it down, create a loose inspiration board filled with images you love

and that represent both you and your fiancé. The element that gets

you most excited is your “brand.” For example, let’s say your favorite

pictures in your inspiration board are set in the great outdoors. Why not

bring it to your wedding by using natural and organic containers [and]

twine and raffia incorporated into your invitations, favors and escort

cards? Keep in mind the tone of your wedding is set as early as your

invitations, so be sure to have a general idea of your branding before

anything goes out the door.

What are some fresh design approaches?

We treat wedding design as if we were commissioned to create art.

After we’ve listened to your vision and story [and] after we’ve seen the

images that inspire you, we create boards and renderings that trans-

late everything into reality. Funny enough, as cool as it is to be trendy,

most of our brides want some classic element to ground their design.

We like to say, “We’ll design a wedding that’s fab, but not so trendy that

10 years from now you’ll cringe at the pictures, but it definitely won’t be

your momma’s wedding.”

One of the hottest trends that I am seeing is the use of the letters

L-O-V-E. There are so many fun ways to incorporate this famous four-

letter word.

How can you keep your guests talking about a reception after

the last glass of Champagne?

Yes, they want to witness your union, yes they love you dearly, but

for the love of God, give the people what they want—a party! Under-

standing the demographic of your wedding guests is crucial when

considering your entertainment. For an American/Brazilian wedding, we

hired beautiful costumed samba dancers to teach the guests some

cute routines (after a few rounds of caipirinhas, of course). It was so

much fun and definitely the talk of the town long after the reception.

What are some creative mementos to offer guests?

Most people will throw away those wedding favors you spent so

much time coordinating with your theme, but one thing they will always

cherish is a personalized gift. I

love the idea of creating a sim-

ple mini scrapbook for each

guest. If that seems daunt-

ing, try handwriting a personal

note on beautiful stationery

to each person. Once your

guests realize their note is dif-

ferent from the next person’s,

you’ll hear a sea of “oohs and ahhs.” Don’t be surprised if you walk into

your friend’s home in a few years and see your note framed.

How does fashion and interior design influence your vision for

wedding decor?

Fashion, interior design and weddings are definitely close cousins.

I’d even throw in exotic locations into the family mix. Good interior and

fashion designers tell stories with their work. I love to interpret how the

story is told, to see the materials and colors used and the way the de-

sign is accessorized. My travels also serve an important role in my de-

sign process. I pretend I am a photographer and take tons of pictures

for inspiration. All these visual images are ripe sources of inspiration for

all of my wedding design.

What is the most creative theme/scheme you’ve executed?

One of the most creative concepts I’ve executed was a rock ’n’ roll

inspired wedding photo shoot. Our directive was to make it edgy, fun

but sweet. Our bride channeled her inner Madonna with a black belt

around her Dolce & Gabbana gown, and the groom wore a polka-dot-

ted tuxedo jacket with black skinny jeans. Their head table included two

vintage Louis armchairs that were painted a bright fuchsia, [and] zebra

patterned plates.

Tim Quinn, celebrity face artist for Giorgio Armani and red-car-

pet expert, offers tips and advice on big-day makeup.

WI: Every bride wants that flawless wedding face. What ad-

vice can you offer?

QUINN: There are three essential ingredients: a silicone gel

primer, such as Giorgio Armani Fluid Master Primer, which will keep

your makeup in place all day long; long-lasting foundation, prefer-

ably oil-free (I love Lasting Silk UV Foundation by Armani—I use it on all the red-carpet beauties

and it always looks perfect.); a semimatte finish powder for touch-ups throughout the day.

To tan or not to tan?

I’m a huge fan of the sun-kissed look! I think it’s best to avoid tanning due to risk of burning. I

recommend using a gradual self-tanning product that will build the perfect golden glow. Sheer

bronzers are always great for the face.

What colors are you loving right now?

Rose-gold shades are very flattering on almost all skin tones. Plum, purple and berry shades are

very popular now; just make sure to stay away from too much shimmer. Also, keep in mind that the

makeup should complement the style of dress that you plan to wear for the big day.

Are there colors that are absolute no-nos?

I would avoid purely trendy shades (blue, neon, hot pink). These pictures will be with you for

a lifetime and you want to have a classic look that is timeless.

Should a bride hire a makeup artist on the day of the wedding? If so, how should she

choose him or her?

It’s always good to work with someone who shares your beauty aesthetic. Always consult

with a few before choosing the right fit. If you are doing it yourself, you

can always find helpful videos online. I even have a few on our website

that you could check out: giorgioarmanibeauty.com

Get with the ProgramEvery bride wants to be beautiful from head to toe. Some-

times, no matter how much you exercise, there are still those

little trouble spots. Anushka Blau is here to help. At her epony-

mous West Palm Beach cosmedical center, spa and salon, Blau

is touting Anushka’s Cellulite Free Lifestyle Program, a five-week

regime that combines diet and exercise with modern technology

to get your derriere ready to walk down that aisle. The spa is the

only one in the area to have the non-invasive SmoothShapes,

which uses laser and light energy with a mechanical massage

and vacuum system to liquefy fat and move it out of the body via

the lymphatic system. This treatment is followed up with Blau’s

famous Press-o-Jet, which helps promote lymphatic drainage

and release water retention. Individualized nutritional counsel-

ing, daily menus and exercises that target cellulite-prone areas

of the body also are key to getting your backside lean, mean and

dimple-free. (561-820-0500, anushkaspa.com)

Sparty with the DonGetting pampered before the big day is a must; having fun doing

it is even better. Bridal parties are not only welcomed at the Don

CeSar in St. Pete Beach, they are treated like royalty. The Don has

a private suite area in its Spa Oceana, where the bride and her

girlfriends can unwind and bond in privacy and style. The suite

encompasses three treatment rooms and a lounge area, where

the ladies can sip Champagne, nibble on a spa lunch or enjoy

sweet samplings custom created by the Don’s pastry chef for the

occasion. The experience is fully customizable. We recommend

hosting part of the “sparty” on the rooftop lounge overlooking the

water. (727-363-5029, loewshotels.com/doncesar)

hen Kira Nudel and Dan

Fenton planned their wedding,

they kept their family and friends

in mind. From the location to the

cuisine, Kira and Dan, who live in

Fort Lauderdale, wanted to enter-

tain their guests with an unforget-

table celebration.

When choosing a venue, the

couple searched for a nearby site

that felt like a destination but

without the travel hassles. They

settled on The Ritz-Carlton Palm

Beach in Manalapan for its elegant,

laid-back atmosphere. “I was look-

ing at places that would provide

a vacation-like feel for my [South

Florida] guests,” says Kira. “A

place that was far enough but not

so far that they would need to pur-

chase plane tickets. I wanted ev-

eryone to spend a weekend away

without the extra expense.”

Kira and Dan are childhood

friends, who grew up in Holly-

wood, Florida, and attended the

University of Florida. Both pre-

med students, they were study

partners for their organic chemis-

try class. “Our first date was not

meant to be a date,” she says. “It

Dan Fenton and Kira Nudel hosted a garden-inspired wedding at the Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach in Manalapan.

was a study session but after three-plus

hours, we noticed all we did was talk

about things not related to chemistry.”

Their interest in science and each

other continued. Kira, a third-year in-

ternal medicine resident at Broward

General Medical Center, and Dan, an

oral and maxillofacial surgery intern

at Jackson Memorial Hospital, dated

for seven years, with two years as long

distance, before Dan proposed. “We are

very alike in many ways and in the ways

we are different, we complement each

other,” says Kira.

With Kira’s parents’, older brother’s

and sister’s approval to marry, Dan or-

ganized an amorous affair on the day of

their seventh anniversary. Fresh bagels

and coffee were served on a gondola

ride on New River in Fort Lauderdale,

then a private lunch at the historic Bilt-

more hotel in Coral Gables.

There, Dan unveiled a large frame

decorated with events, trips, menus

and more experienced by the couple.

“In the middle was a picture of the two

of us flying a glider plane and trailing

the plane was typed out, ‘The places we

have been and the places we shall go,’”

says Kira. “When I turned back around,

Dan was on one knee.”

That night, the two headed out for

a supposedly quiet dinner. Kira found

herself surrounded by their entire fam-

ily, including grandparents, aunts, un-

cles and cousins, for a congratulatory

gathering and later with close friends

for a late-night celebration.

With her mom, an interior designer by

her side, and Daniel Events of Delray Beach

executing the event, Kira began planning a

wedding that would be as momentous as

Dan’s proposal. “I am not the young girl

who sat down and dreamt of my wedding

but the second we started planning, I knew

exactly what I wanted and what I did not

want.” The end result was a lavish, organic

wedding. “I wanted to make the ballroom

resemble a garden, bringing the outside in-

side,” explains Kira.

On November 14, 2009, Kira entered the

ballroom through a gate decorated with

white rose blossoms, wearing a couture

Silvia Tcherassi gown. The gown was an im-

pulse purchase. With her mother and sister,

Kira was heading to a scheduled dress ap-

pointment when she was sidetracked by

the gowns displayed at a Silvia Tcherassi

boutique. The women decided to pop in.

“I saw the dress right away because I have

never seen anything like it,” Kira says. “It

was made with multiple [layers of] French

white lace. They took it off the mannequin,

I tried it on and it fit perfectly.”

As her something old, Kira wore her

mother’s diamond necklace and earrings.

For her something blue, “my aunt got me a

pair of blue Hanky Panky [panties] with ‘I

do’ spelled in crystals on the front.”

Under the chuppah, the couple recited

their own written vows in front of the

rabbi and 250 guests. “Dan’s words were

the most beautiful, thoughtful, honest

words I have ever heard,” she says.

The ceiling of the ballroom was draped

with hanging vines decorated with white

orchid, rose and tulip garlands and bou-

quets. The six-foot centerpieces resem-

bled trees with more white flowers. In

the middle of the ballroom, Dan’s only

decoration request reigned supreme—a

diamond-shaped white dance floor with

Kira and Dan had a traditional Jewish wedding; the bride wore a Silvia Tcherassi gown with layered French white lace.

white leather sofas on each side. “Lighting

was also a very big deal for me. I wanted

a very romantic feel with light colors that

alternated depending on what was occur-

ring,” says Kira.

Dinner was equally splendid. “After our

first course, each individual received ice

sculptures in a shape of an F (for Fenton),

which served as platforms for the sorbet.”

When all was said and done, the couple

divulged their last surprise. “Dan and I

love to party and celebrate, so the evening

did not end when it should have,” Kira

says. “We surprised everyone with an af-

ter party with live music, more food and

drinks. It lasted until 4 a.m.” [

The eight-tiered fondant cake, featuring sugar calla lilies, yellow cake, chocolate pudding cream with raspberries and buttercream icing, was displayed under the chuppah.

Kristal Caron and Benjamin McConley attended Florida State

University’s MBA program in 2008. By the end of the year, they had

their master’s degrees and a little something extra—true love.

Caron, a celebrity jeweler, and McConley, a sports financial and

business manager, quickly noticed each other and their smarts.

“We’d ask each other, ‘How’d you do?,’ and he always boasted on

his test scores but he’d only be two points higher than me,” says

Kristal. “It began like that, and we quickly took it to another level.”

Page 68: Weddings Illustrated Fall/Winter 2010

After six months together, Benjamin proposed to

Kristal, who was sick in bed. “In between sniffles [and]

watching TV, he walks in and gets down on one knee

and says, ‘I know this is not the most romantic time

and I know you’re sick but I just can’t wait another

minute. I want you to be my wife.’”

Kristal began planning their wedding for January 1,

2010. “We were dating and planning at the same time

[but] when you know, you know.”

Treating their loved ones to a memorable and classy

event was as important as the nuptials. “My idea was

to have an effortlessly chic and timeless wedding,” she

says. “I wanted to create a highly customized experi-

ence for everyone.” The couple chose Villa Woodbine, a

private, early twentieth-century Mediterranean Reviv-

al-style mansion in Coconut Grove. “The vision of the

wedding was a modern cake and the fabulous dinner

parties they had in in private estates during the golden

age,” says Kristal. “The decoration was dictated by the

villa and not the other way around. I wanted everything

to look natural.”

Vanessa Oppo of Karma Goddess in Miami used

candles and white flowers throughout—amaryllis, pe-

onies, vendela roses, hydrangeas and ranunculus—but

the architecture served as the decor.

With 40 of their closest family and friends, Benjamin

and Kristal exchanged traditional vows around

the villa fountain. The couple stood before Ben-

jamin’s childhood pastor from Louisiana, who

now has a church in Cooper City. Kristal wore a

Marchesa silk chiffon gown, which was altered

into a one-shoulder style, Christian Louboutin

heels, a custom color nail polish by Nailezee

and Kristal Caron Jewelry earrings available at

A.R.T. Worth Avenue, Palm Beach.

A violinist led the way to the reception,

where cocktails and hors d’oeuvres by Chef

Bill Hansen of Bill Hansen Catering in Coconut

Grove, who is exclusive to the property, await-

ed. Six hors d’oeuvres were served, including

jumbo lump crab cakes, mini open-faced Kobe

beef sliders, mini lamb “lollipops” and mush-

rooms stuffed with chèvre and herbs.

Inside, guests found a room dedicated to the cou-

ple’s favorite books and another to the red velvet cake

covered in white fondant. “I knew exactly who was

going to do the cake when I was proposed to,” Kristal

says. “She did my sister’s cake 20 years prior. Especially

when you grow up in Miami, there’s no other person to

do your cake. It’s Ana Paz [of Miami].”

Dozens of candles illuminated the property, emit-

ting Kristal’s favorite scent, Love By Kilian. “I think

my favorite moment was walking toward my husband,

smelling this amazing flow of yumminess.” Guests re-

ceived Love By Kilian perfume and candles as a favor.

The five-course dinner began with a field greens

salad with mandarin oranges, hearts of palm and plum

tomatoes with passion fruit vinaigrette. The fish course

featured grilled mahi mahi with a lemon shallot beurre

blanc, while the intermezzo course featured lemon sor-

bet with mint. For the main course, the chef prepared

sliced beef tenderloin with a portabello port sauce.

During dinner, the classic melodies of Frank Sinatra,

Nat King Cole and Elvis Costello played through the

villa. She opted for recordings by her favorite original

artists rather than a live “tribute” band. “It was like

Frank was in the other room singing,” she says. [

The bride wore a one-shoulder, all-silk chiffon

Marchesa gown.The wedding invitations

were by Luxury Invita-tions in Boca Raton.

Honoring the past while looking to-

ward the future was a central theme of the

wedding celebration of Adriana Jouvanis

and Andrew Scafetta. The couple, who re-

side in the Washington, D.C., area, wove

tradition and sentiment into their special

day in the most elegant way possible.

Friends and family are an extremely

important part of Adriana and Andy’s

lives—so much so that many of their wed-

ding details were inspired and influenced

by personal relationships. “We wanted

a destination wedding, so our wedding

would not just be a day, but a weekend

celebration with family and friends,”

says Adriana. “We love them too much

to make them deal with D.C. traffic for an

entire weekend.”

They chose the Jacksonville area at Adri-

ana’s parents’ suggestion. They had just

spent a weekend in Amelia Island on busi-

ness, and thought the area would be per-

fect—not too far from the couple’s home,

but far enough to feel like an escape. After

looking at various venues, Adriana and

Andy found exactly what they wanted—a

beautiful Greek Orthodox church, Holy

Trinity, to honor Adriana’s Greek heritage,

and the Mediterranean-styled clubhouse

at TPC Sawgrass, a golf club in Ponte Ve-

dra Beach, for the reception.

Planning the event became such an epic

Personal touches with a vintage flair were placed throughout.

Page 73: Weddings Illustrated Fall/Winter 2010

WeddingS illuStrAted | FAll/Winter 2010 71

undertaking that the couple even created

a website to “exaggerate and satirize the

grand plans for our wedding,” says Andy.

Adriana adds, “My dad literally figured

out how many days of wedding planning,

from engagement to wedding day, were in-

volved. I believe it was 500-plus.”

The planning paid off, of course. The

ceremony was traditional Greek Ortho-

dox, with all the customary elements such

as the connected crowns (Andy and Adri-

ana’s were made of solid sterling silver by

orthodoxweddingcrowns.com), the lav-

ishly decorated candles and the “dance of

Isaiah” around the altar. Building on the

idea of tradition, Andy and Adriana chose

a “vintage elegance” theme for the recep-

tion. Event designer Liza Chung built on

this concept with gorgeous florals—mostly

blue hydrangeas and white roses—accented

with strings of crystal beads and antiqued

silver elements. Personal touches, such as

framed photos of the couple’s parents and

grandparents on their wedding days, were

placed throughout.

“The head table and cake table were, by

far, my favorite,” says Adriana. “I still dream

of it to this day—the billowy linens, puffs

of hydrangeas and creamy blooms, crystal

beading draped from the vases, ivory pea-

cock plumes, and the romantic candles all

over the tables. It was truly dreamy.”

The peacock feathers were a nod to Adri-

ana’s grandmother. “My grandmother loved

peacocks,” she says. “She actually had one

as a pet. The feathers seemed like such a fun

and personal nod to my mother’s family.”

Another personal touch was wearing her

mother’s jewelry. “I wore her earrings and

bracelets, and carried her silver handbag,”

says Adriana. Her headpiece was a custom

creation incorporating feathers and her

mother’s vintage silver brooch. Using her

mother’s jewelry, she says, “reminded me

of being a little girl and raiding my mother’s

closet for dress-up clothes and accessories.”

The tributes to family extended into ev-

ery detail of the reception. There was an

ice cream sundae bar, which started out

as a tribute to Andy and Adriana’s father,

both huge ice cream fans, but was popular

with all guests, young and young-at-heart.

For the male guests (as well as some of the

ladies), there was a cigar bar with Romeo

y Julieta Churchills, Macanudo Hampton

Court and other premium smokes. And

then there was the popcorn. “The popcorn

was all for me,” says Adriana. “I approached

TPC with the idea and they found the per-

fect vintage popcorn machine, and even

included some scrumptious popcorn top-

pings. My mother-in-law and I located the

classic red-and-white popcorn bags, so

guests got to take them home as well.”

It was all in the name of a good time.

“These elements added a sense of humor

and genuine fun to the night,” says Andy.

“A little nontraditional and not in keeping

with the theme, but at the end of the day,

we wanted everyone to have fun.”

And fun was exactly what the guests had,

especially when the Greek music began to

play. Led by Andy and Adriana, the guests

joined in the circle dancing. “The coin skirts

for the Greek belly dancing songs were a hit

with the ladies,” says Adriana.

As the night wound down, the couple

departed to prepare for their honeymoon

to Rome and the Amalfi Coast. They ex-

changed beautiful gifts—Andy gave Adri-

ana a second diamond and rose gold wed-

ding band to encase her engagement ring,

and she gave him silver cuff links with his

favorite football team, the New York Gi-

ants—to commemorate their union. It was

just one of many treasured moments that

made their wedding day full of personal

meaning, just as they had always dreamed

it would be. [

The wedding details included a vintage popcorn machine, a sundae bar, and striped candy boxes. The peacock feathers were a tribute to Adriana’s grand-mother.

Ashlie Nalls and Keith Campbell were introduced

by his sister, who revealed the pair had an uncom-

mon connection.

“I was actually training for my first triathlon before

I ever knew her, and she was doing the same thing,”

says Keith. “That was one of the topics that my sister

tried to sell me on Ashlie.” After dating for two years,

Keith proposed during a trail walk before sunset in

Land O’Lakes. “He turned around and was on one

knee and asked me to marry him,” says Ashlie. “He

completely orchestrated it himself.”

Ashlie and Keith wanted an eclectic and laid-back

atmosphere for their ceremony and reception, so

they choose the charming and secluded Lange Farms

in Dade City and planned the entire day themselves.

“It suited us perfectly,” says Ashlie. “The whole goal

was for it to be special, but we wanted it to be a lot of

fun for everyone.”

On February 27, 2010, the couple married under

large oak trees in front of 200 family members and

friends. The bride wore an ivory lace dress and her

sister-in-law’s pearl ring. “It took me until the week

of the wedding to find [shoes] I liked, and I ended up

getting red silk heels,” says Ashlie.

Adding to the relaxed vibe, barbecue and Southern

food was catered by a local restaurant. Ashlie’s dad,

whose hobby is winemaking, bottled red and white

wines with custom labels featuring the couple’s en-

gagement pictures, and served them at the rustic

reception at the property’s Garden House. Her own

collection of flower-filled vintage vases served as

centerpieces. Their first dance was to Clay Walker’s

“Watch This,” and Keith also performed an air guitar

solo to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

“We’ve had people still talk about how they had

a really good time and enjoyed the fun-loving atmo-

sphere,” says Keith. For their honeymoon, the couple

went to Big Sky, Montana. [

Two sisters choose Naples for their intimate, beachside celebrations.BykAThyBEckERPhoToGRAPhyByhEAThERDoNLAN

The Call of the Sea

The Crown family is so tight that when Barbara and Bob Crown

sold their communications business and moved to Naples 10 years

ago, their grown children moved their hearts with them.

Even though they grew up in Pittsburgh, the Crown sisters

found that many visits through the years made Naples feel like

home. When older sister Jennifer Cicci decided to get married in

December 2007, she chose Naples.

It was the same in March 2010 for her sister, Cristina, who also

was living up North and heard the call of the sea. She had met her

groom, Quincy Jones, a friend of her brother’s, at her sister’s wed-

ding. “My sister’s wedding was unbelievable,” she says. “It was

such a great weekend. I decided we had to get married in Naples.”

Both sisters, who talk by phone several times a day, had a four-

day wedding festival, and both relied on someone they call the ar-

ea’s best wedding planner—their mother.

“My mom is such a good event planner,” Cristina says. “I’ve

helped her with charity events. She’s such a people person, and

everyone loves my mom.”

The weddings were very different, however. Jennifer’s wed-

Page 79: Weddings Illustrated Fall/Winter 2010

ding was smaller, with about 175 guests and a Tommy Bahama-

esque, relaxed yet elegant, beach feel. Cristina’s wedding was

glitz and sparkle for 400 guests. “Each wedding was tailored to

each one,” Barbara says. “I used many of the same vendors, but

they were very different.”

Since Jennifer lives in Pittsburgh, and she and her mother have

similar tastes, she let her mother make many of the decisions and

do a lot of the planning. “The whole thing was a surprise for me.

My mom picked out everything for us,” she says. “From what she

was telling me to what happened was wonderful.”

Barbara says she saw her role in both weddings as creating as

many special memories for each daughter as possible. “We spent

a lot of time making sure it was everything they had dreamed of,”

she says. “I wanted them to have memories that will last through-

out their lives.”

Jennifer’s wedding started with a welcome party around the

pool at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort. Since Jennifer’s birthday

was a couple of days before, the party also was a birthday celebra-

tion, with her name spelled out in lights at the pool, balloons,

food and a band. The rehearsal

dinner was at Riverwalk Res-

taurant, with some guests ar-

riving by boat. The next day, the

wedding was on the beach, and

an after-party was at the night-

club Sway Lounge with cigar rollers and a photo booth.

Her mother added details like a Mojito bar and a slide show. “She

did it,” Jennifer says. “I couldn’t have asked for a better wedding

planner. Every detail was unbelievable.”

When it was Cristina’s turn, she knew she wanted the same

multiday format, but she found that the Naples Grande Beach Re-

sort suited her desire for a black-tie event with a fun, South Beach

feel. Because Cristina says she had a vision from the moment Quincy

proposed during a family trip to Little Palm Island, her mother sent

bridal magazines with pages folded over and paint color samples.

“From the time I got engaged, I knew in my head what I wanted,”

Cristina says. “I watched ‘Platinum Weddings.’ My favorite color is

pink, so I wanted pink flowers and rhinestones, even for the save-

the-date cards. Rhinestones on the invitation, on the menu. I had a

vision, and it definitely came together.”

The weekend started on Thursday with a welcome party, which

also was a birthday party for Cristina, who, like her sister, planned

her wedding near her birthday. The party started at the Naples

Grande with trolleys to Blue Martini. On Friday they held a bridal

shower luncheon, and a pool party with her brother playing DJ.

The rehearsal dinner was at the Strip House, with every table deco-

rated with personal items related to Cristina and Quincy. A white-

themed party and fireworks on the beach followed the dinner.

The Saturday wedding took place on the beach beneath a floral arch.

The reception was held in the ballroom, followed by “Club Jones”

opening in the transformed hotel lounge. Although Barbara saw to

every detail and had the experience of planning one wedding already,

she says she was nervous right up until the bridesmaids walked down

the aisle at Cristina’s wedding. “My husband and I want to have it

again, just to go as guests,” she says.

Even though Cristina directed the details, her parents were able

to sneak in a significant surprise at the reception. Cristina planned

a special song for the father-daughter dance. Bob surprised her with

a tribute to The Wizard of Oz, her

favorite movie as a girl.

Two screens played clips

from the film, and lighting

transformed the dance floor

into a yellow brick road. A girl

in a Dorothy costume brought

a silver tray with ruby slippers,

which Bob placed on Cristina’s feet. He read a poem he had written,

and the two then danced to Jewel’s version of “Somewhere Over

the Rainbow.”

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the place,” Cristina says. “Our family

is very close. I seriously felt like I was standing on a cloud.” It was

just one moment of many that have the sisters and their family often

still reliving the details.

“There was so much love evident everywhere,” Barbara says.

“You can always have great decor and flowers, but the feeling is

what made everything so special.” [

For Cristina and Quincy’s afterparty, an area was transformed into Club Jones, complete with

a cigar roller and photo booth; ruby slippers from the father/daughter dance.

CRySTALCLEARCrystal Cruises, which holds the

distinction of being named No. 1 in its

category more than any other cruise

line, hotel or resort in history, has a loyal

following but it does not rest on its laurels.

Most recently, the line, which includes the

ships Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony,

added exclusive experiences to its

itineraries. Want to tour the Doges Palace

in Venice privately, before the doors open to

the public? Done. How about a behind-the-

scenes tour of the Monte Carlo Ballet? No

problem. Access to Guadalajara from Puerto

Vallarta on a private plane? All yours.

The Crystal ships call on fabulous

destinations, including the Holy Land,

Panama Canal and West Africa, but the

real beauty of the experience is onboard.

Though these are large ships, the service is

so impeccable and so intimate that you feel

like you are cruising on a friend’s private

yacht. In the top accommodation categories,

butler service involves more than someone

bringing you canapés. The butlers are

trusted advisers, offering tips on everything

from shore excursions to local culture, and

have anticipation down to a science. They

are such keen observers that they know

what you want practically before you do. For

honeymooning couples, the butlers (and all

the staff, really) are invaluable resources.

For 2011, more than two dozen

“Experiences of Discovery” are being

offered on itineraries across the board,

including the popular Wine & Food

Festival (South America, Northern Europe,

Alaska and Mexican Riviera cruises),

Film & Theater Festival (Panama Canal),

Emerging Artists Series (Alaska) and Big

Band & Ballroom Dance (Transatlantic).

Top-flight amenities and service, must-see

destinations and enrichment: It’s the right

formula for a memorable experience, and

Crystal has perfected it. crystalcruises.com

With its intricate woodwork and etched

glass accents, the Silver Spirit looks like it

was built in the art deco era, but in reality

it is the newest ship in the Silversea fleet.

As such, it has the biggest staterooms, 95

percent with balconies, of any Silversea

ship (and that’s saying a lot). What truly

makes this ship unique, though, is that it

is still small enough to call on harbors that

the megaships can’t negotiate.

The fact that all suites offer an ocean

view is a big plus, too. After all, what’s the

point of being on a ship if you can’t connect

with the sea? All Silversea ships are truly

all-inclusive (even gratuities and onboard

beverages are not billed separately). And

dining is never set; guests are free to

dine whenever, wherever and with whom

they choose. This intimate arrangement

(not to mention the innovative, seasonal

tastes of the Grand Chefs Relais &

Châteaux culinary program) is perfect for

honeymooning couples.

The ship launched this year with a 91-

day inaugural voyage, and is now accepting

passengers for 2011 cruises to exciting

destinations like French Polynesia, New

Zealand, Hong Kong and Dubai. Our

personal favorite is the Barcelona to Rome

cruise, May 26 through June 2, during which

the Silver Spirit will overnight in Monaco

during the 2011 Grand Prix. silversea.com

ALLhAILThEQUEENOctober marks the maiden voyage of

Cunard’s newest ship, the Queen Elizabeth,

and, as befits a queen, she is making a

spectacular entrance. As the second largest

Cunard ship ever built, and possibly

the most exquisite, the Queen Elizabeth is

home to a number of exclusive offerings.

Some of our favorites: The outdoor space

on Deck 9, a venue for garden parties not

unlike those held at British country houses

at the turn of the century; the Garden

Lounge, where occasional “supper club”

evenings will be held; the Games Deck,

where one can play croquet and bowls; the

Britannia Club, where guests in higher-

level staterooms can enjoy single-seating

dining at a time of their choosing; and the

gorgeous marquetry “wall” by David Linley,

depicting the original Queen Elizabeth, an art

deco icon, in the central lobby behind the

grand staircase.

The maiden voyage of the Queen Elizabeth

sold out in 29 minutes when it was

first offered, but sailings in 2011 are still

available. The Southampton, England-

based ship calls on glamorous destinations,

including St. Petersburg, Russia and the

Baltic states; the British Isles; the Canary

Islands; the Adriatic Sea; and, of course,

the classic transatlantic crossing. For those

who want to take an extended honeymoon,

the maiden circumnavigation of the globe

departs in January and sails for 104 glorious

days. cunard.com

Elegance in OrlandoFor brides who love the whimsy of Walt Disney World without compromis-

ing elegance, the Waldorf-Astoria Orlando offers the best of both worlds.

Located within Lake Buena Vista in the heart of Disney Country, the resort,

which opened in October 2009, is a sister property to the storied Waldorf-As-

toria in New York, and is equivalent in terms of elegance—especially when it

comes to destination weddings.

The 8,100-square-foot Grand Ballroom (top right and left) has classic

details like paneled walls and extensive millwork. Outdoor venues include

formal gardens and a private island with 25,000 square feet of space. The

property has a team of wedding planners who can see to every detail, and of-

fers various packages from something simple to a sky’s-the-limit fairy tale.

For those who are planning a weekend-long celebration, there is the bonus

of high-end facilities, such as a Guerlain Spa for pre- and post-wedding

pampering, an 18-hole Rees Jones golf course, and a southern incarnation of

the famed Bull & Bear Steakhouse. And let’s not forget the VIP Disney pack-

ages—a hit with guests of all ages. waldorfastoriaorlando.com

THE PROCEDURE: “tummy tuck” – Bafitis Integrated LiposculptureAbdominoplasty (“BILA”)

By Dr. Harold Bafitis

Appearance Does Matter! They say that your eyes are the window to your soul, but what about your tummy and torso?

Nothing is as bad, and negative to your overall appearance and ego, thanan out-of-proportion torso and lower abdomen. Other people are unfortu-nately drawn to the defect rather than to the inner beauty of the individual.Compounding this problem is usually an inability to keep your abdomenflat, especially after a full meal. A lower abdominal bulge that will not goaway, even after endless sit-ups. There is usually loose skin with significantstretch marks, especially after pregnancy or previous surgery. Often thereis excess fat in the flanks and back. Even a compounding abdominal incisional hernia can be part of this “tummy” experience so common towomen – even showing up in men. Often the gluteal area has lost its fullness; and now there is a “flat bottom” with a full rounded tummy!

WHY CIRCUMFERENTIAL TIGHTENING WORKS Usually removing loose skin alone cannot solve the problems statedabove. To achieve results as seen in these dramatic preop and postop photos, newer and advanced, integrated procedures are employed. Oftena “beer belly” as seen above can be completely corrected in a special modified surgery. Often, tightening abdominal muscles will provide internalsupport that will last a lifetime. This can be achieved by correcting any hernias that are present, as well as lipoplasty of the anterior and posteriorhip rolls, low back and the entire abdomen. The circumferential contouringcan create a dramatic improvement. The last step will be creating a morenatural oval shape to the umbilicus (belly button) which will enhance a natural contour of the abdomen. With new fat grafting techniques, a fuller, more youthful gluteal (derriere) can be created that lasts!

CHALLENGESDr. Bafitis has taken this surgery to a new level with his “BILA” procedure.By combining liposculpture, fat grafting, circumferential tightening, andabdominoplasty, this procedure can now be done with only IV sedation, orin selected patients monitored “awake” sedation. Patients no longer haveto be bent forward for weeks and have worries about excessive tension atthe incision line. The patient is usually up and walking within a few days(24-48 hours). Drains are limited and often not necessary. The patients andresults speak for themselves.

Don’t trust the most difficult cosmetic procedure to someone less than an expert in the field.

Don’t fool yourself… APPEARANCE MATTERS!
