LO: To write a haiku poem.

What is a haiku?

A haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haikus do not have to rhyme

but they do require a particular pattern of syllables. Do you know what a syllable

is?

Syllables are the separate beats/parts of words. Can you work out how many

syllables are in these words? Clap them out as you say them if it helps.

Answers:

Ball—1 syllable Butterfly—3 syllables Watermelon—4 syllables Candle—2 syllables.

Look at each of these lockdown haikus. Can you recognise a common syllable

Read the haikus again. This time, clap the syllable pattern as you read.
