TAT’s local representative Marieanne Ouwehand says reports coming in from wholesalers highlight the senti- ment that Kiwi travellers are quite resilient, with only one cancellation noted—as far as she is aware—while Bangkok Airways also hasn’t seen any major cancellations. And we want tourists to know that by visiting Thai- land, they’ll make memorable travel memories and enjoy experiences that will entice them to return time after time,” says TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn. TAT is also seeking approval for a spe- cial holiday celebrating World Tour- ism Day (27 Sep). It’s also organising special events like the Magnificent Thailand street food festival in Bang- kok (01-07 Oct), complete with street decorations, shows and a dedicated shopping street; ExpatFest, showcas- ing Thai culture, traditions and cui- sine, at the end of Sep; and it’s looking to bring back its Thailand’s Luckiest Visitor campaign. “We believe that all these special mea- sures and initiatives will help stimu- late travel during the rest of the year, and allow Thailand to reach the 2016 revenue target of 2.41 trillion Baht,” says Supasorn. A virtual private network (VPN) provider has warned about the risks behind using apps popular with travellers, such as Airbnb, Pokemon Go and Tinder.Airbnb in particular has been mak-ing headlines because of the security risk posed by using Wi-Fi in rentals, which is often easier to hack than public networks such as those in cof-fee shops and airports, say experts. This is because the home-owner as well as other visitors have the chance to take over the network.NordVPN unsurprisingly suggests travellers use a VPN such as the one it offers to protect themselves—and it’s advice that’s generally backed up by other experts, who say the other alternative is to not use the Wi-Fi.Meanwhile the wildly popular Poke-mon Go app creates security risks in

that users need to log in using their Google credentials. Also because it’s not available in every country, it’s shared through file sharing websites, which can be infected with mal-ware—meaning it’s important not to download unofficial versions of the game.Tinder is a popular app with travel-lers keen to hook up a date while on the road, however it keeps users’ private information even when they deactivate their accounts—and re-search has shown that information is easy to steal, so users should enter as little information as possible. Finally, travellers should be wary of cyber criminals who have created apps that look exactly like Tinder, Airbnb or Glow in order to get users’ personal and financial information. To dodge this, when making an on-line payment users should check if the payment gateway has an https URL, which mean it’s secure. They should also be wary of requests for more information than is usually required, says NordVPN.

MH Self TaggingMalaysia Airlines is introducing self-print baggage tags for all domestic and international flights from 18 Aug. In a move designed to ‘make the travel experience for customers fast-er and more efficient’, passengers in economy will need to print the tags at check-in kiosks located around the departure level of Kuala Lumpur In-ternational Airport and self-tag their bags before proceeding to the bag-gage drop counter. Passengers who check-in via web and mobile will also need to print their bag tags at the 50 kiosks available before proceeding to the bag drop counter. A maximum of two printed baggage tags per passen-ger is allowed at the kiosk.MH says the move is in line with its goal of simplifying check-in, and is the first phase before the carrier introduces self-baggage drop in the fourth quarter of this year.

Record Firearm HaulUS security officials are said to have seized a record-breaking number of firearms (78) in carry-on bags at airports throughout the country last week; 68 of which were loaded. Among the haul was reportedly a small number of replica grenades, a cane sword and a knife concealed in a pill bottle.

Euro-Japan FlightsJ a p a n’s M i n i s t r y o f L a n d , Infrastructure, Transport and Tour-ism (MLIT) has granted an exten-sion of the anti-trust immunity to include Iberia in the joint business between Japan Airlines, British Air-ways and Finnair, allowing the four airlines to cooperate commercially on flights between Europe and Ja-pan. Iberia is expected to join the exist-ing joint business from 18 Oct, when it will start its non-stop operations between Madrid and Tokyo.

A number of Bora Bora hotels have renovation plans in the works, which Tahiti Tourisme believes will make the destination even more appealing to holidaymakers. The Intercontinental Bora Bora Re-sort & Thalasso Spa, operated by Pa-cific Beachcomber is set to construct four new two-bedroom overwater villas with private pools; 10 of its ex-

isting overwater villas will be getting swimming pools; and all villas will undergo a general refresh. The work will begin in Sep and is expected to take 10 months. Meanwhile, Le Meridien Bora Bora has just completed a refurbishment with a focus on refreshing its bunga-lows and food and beverage outlets, including a revamp of its Miki Miki and Pool bars. The lagoon-side hotel has also launched a new bar, the Hap-paina Wine Bar, which offers a range of wines by the bottle or glass, as well as a new tapas menu. In addition, Conrad Hotels & Resorts is preparing to take over the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort & Spa in a move that will see the property re-open as the Conrad Bora Bora Nui in early 2017, following a multi-million dollar refurbishment, as reported in Travel Today 16 Jul. “It’s hard to believe Bora Bora can get better, but with these new look prop-erties the Peal of the Pacific is set to take on a striking new sheen,” adds Tahiti Toursime’s Robert Thompson.

New Westin For DarwinConstruction of a AUD250 million luxury hotel on the Darwin Water-front will begin next year, says Tour-ism Australia. The Westin hotel is expected to be completed by 2020, supporting the growing demand for high end ac-commodation options in Australia’s north, says TA.

An agency that specialises in hosted tours to sporting events is looking to open its tours up to the trade distribution, saying it believes there’s a gap in the mar-ket for such a service here—and agents may be missing out on bookings as a result.Sporting Tours (formerly Stars Sports Tours) has a long history of hosting tours to events like the Hong Kong 7s, FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and Rugby World Cup, says sales and marketing manager Dar-ren Driver. Many tours are hosted by well-known personalities such as Willie Kay (motor racing) and Des Coppins (Melbourne Cup). The company is now looking to work with the local trade, and wants agents to know its focus is on working with them, not using them for their database.“We want to support the trade with our product offering—we feel that there are limited options available for the trade to book,” says Driver.

“We have awesome packages avail-able, and pay commission to the agents not a finder’s fee. We also have a strict policy here to work with agents, we would never directly mar-ket to an agent partner’s customer.”Agents who are unfamiliar with booking sports travel shouldn’t have to lose a booking as a result, and Sporting Tours can offer expertise on

Sporting Tours Looks To Agentsa range of events, says Driver. “We are more than happy to look at all and any opportunities that arise with agents,” he says. “We will happily work with agent partners on groups, for instance if they have a local sports team wishing to attend an event or something similar.”For more information contact [email protected]

From the glam of West Hollywood the Kiwi group headed to Ana-heim. While well-known as home of the Disneyland resort, the des-tination continues to evolve and expand and now truly offers some-thing for all ages and tastes. Most agents in the group had been to Disneyland before—however on this trip all of them mastered the art of the FastPass systems and the single rid-ers lines, which the agents say could save clients from hours of queuing at the parks (more on those tomorrow).

Another surprise hit was the Disney character breakfasts—which are open to the public (not just those staying at the Disney hotels). While many of the agents said they have sold the breakfasts, a number of seasoned consultants said they just weren’t aware of just how good the experience was. While diners of all ages can join in the fun, it’s also a non-stressful way for younger travellers to get their sought after character photos and autographs.

The Happiest Place On Earth Evolves

Getting Around L.A Karmel Shuttles has released a new transport package in response to demand for flexible part-day tours. Called ‘GO where you want to GO!’ the concept basically offers a three-hour commissionable DIY tour for USD175 or a five-hour tour for USD290. The pricing is for up to nine passengers and extra hours are available for an additional USD55per hour. The tours are not narrated and more of a shuttle service but give clients the flexibility to go wherever they want in LA and Orange County, whenever they want, says Karmel Shuttles’ Deb Martin. “We’re expecting this product to be popular with Kiwis because we know they quite like to do their own thing, but with this pricing for up to nine people it really makes it af-fordable for those travelling in small groups,” says Martin.Itinerary suggestions are available, or clients can put together their own. Wholesalers have details.
