2018 Newsletter Term 1 Week 9 From the Principal—Cate Whiting National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence Last Friday we recognised the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. At Brookfield State School, all students are taught to keep their hands and feet to themselves, keep objects where they belong and speak in a friendly way. They are also taught to report physical harm and threats of physical harm to a responsible adult straight away. Check out 4C’s reflec-tions on important anti-bullying and anti-violence messages.

Staffing Update I have been extended to continue in Term 2 while the recruitment and selec-tion process is run at Brassall State School. My brain has certainly received a workout this term learning about the community, activities and work of Brookfield State School. Thank you for your assistance and understanding throughout the term. Mrs Stephanie Weigel will commence maternity leave in Term 2 for the remain-der of the year. All the best, Steph! Mrs Mariko Viliko Edwards will take over 4C on Mondays to Wednesdays from 23 April with Mrs Manase covering the class for the first week while Mrs Edwards moves over from New Zealand. Mrs Edwards will also replace Tracy Findlay on 4B on Fridays and work as a school based relief teacher on Thursdays. Special thanks to Lizel Moore who has been teaching 4B on Fridays this term. Mrs Amanda Swain has also joined us as a teacher aide providing student and administrative support. Ride to School Day This Friday students and parents are invited to participate in Ride to School Day, meeting Mrs Michele McClary at Huntington Park (Rafting Ground Road) to ride safely to school on bikes. Helmets are required! Andrew from Bicycle Queensland spoke on assembly today about important cycle safety messages. Further information is inside this Banter. Thank you, Michele, for organising this. Anybody who would like to ride their horse to school is invited to meet Rowena McIntosh at the Pony Club Grounds at 8:10am. I haven’t had horses ridden to any school I’ve been at before, so how special! If your children walk or ride to school without you, please regularly go through what they should do to stay safe. It’s even worthwhile running through the route on weekends or if you have a spare moment before or after school to check their safety. P&C Thank You A big thank you to Leanne Crossland and her team of helpers who organised the Bush Dance last Friday night. What a wonderful school community event! An event of its calibre takes a lot of planning and work, so thank you, Leanne! Thank you also to the many parents, family members, staff members and children who supported the Bush Dance. It was great to catch up with people in between chasing an 18 month old child (who also had a ball). P&C Executive Committee Thank you to our 2018 P&C Executive Committee who are volunteering to support the important work of the P&C at Brookfield State School: President – Graham Knox Vice President – Rebecca Harrison Secretary – Lauren Urquhart Treasurer – Fiona Dent Thank you also to those people who have agreed to lead P&C Committees. Seeking Your Feedback on the Banter We are reviewing the format and frequency of the Banter and whether it is needed weekly. Given that class newsletters are also sent home, I’m mindful of the amount of reading involved in a weekly Banter and class newsletters – espe-cially for those parents with multiple children. Let us know your feedback. Do you read the Banter every week? Where else do you get your information or would like to get your information? Do you have any suggestions for the infor-mation that we provide?

Further to this, teachers will work in year level teams with our Curriculum Co-ordinator, Mrs Jodie Drew, to plan their units of work for Term 2. This is an exciting and busy time of term for our teachers and students. Brookfield State School Council – Elected Parent Representatives - Vacancies FINAL CALL – NOMINATIONS ARE DUE 28 MARCH. SEP NEWS Autism Awareness Month.

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. It's also the start of Autism Awareness Month in Australia and Autism Queensland's annual Go Blue for Autism campaign. Autism Awareness Month is designed to raise community recognition of the needs and accomplishments of children and adults with Autism. It's also a time for us to embrace difference, raise awareness and acceptance of Autism. Autism is a complex, lifelong developmental disability that affects a person's ability to communicate, interact with others and cope in everyday situations. The cause of autism is not fully understood, but structured early intervention, therapy and education delivered by professionals with expertise in ASD can make a significant difference. From March 27 the Story Bridge and Victoria Bridge will turn their lights blue in support of the Go Blue for Autism campaign. While Brisbane City Hall will turn blue on April 2.

DISTRICT SPORT NEWS

Rugby League Any student interested in trialling for the district Rugby League team both boys and girls please let Mr Skehan know by the end of this week. Boys’ Soccer Any student wishing to trial for District Soccer please see/email Mr Skehan with the following information 1. DOB 2. Preferred position 3. Club and division currently playing 4. Representative experience. The number of students wishing to trial will determine whether a selection process has to take place. If a selec-tion process takes place it is likely to occur in Wk 1 of Term 2 Please remember that only 2 students per school are allowed to trial for a district team, unless otherwise stated. This is due to the larger number of schools in the district and the time constraints that team selectors have – usually only one or two afternoons to make selections. Students will need to be currently playing the sport they wish to trial in to a high standard – at least division 1 or equivalent. It is possible that the school may determine that that no student meets the standard required (unlikely) for district trials and no nominations will be put forward. Students will be trialling against 12 yr olds in Yr 7. This means it is highly unlikely that a 10 yr old in Yr 5 would make a district team. Any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Interschool Sport Training Times Training times are as follows, Yr 5 Touch - Thursday 11:15 -11:45am Netball - Thursday 11:15 -11:45am Soccer - Thursday 11:15 – 12:15 Training times can also be found on the school’s website.

RIDE2School Day National Ride2School Day is this Friday 23 March....it’s a day when everyone can ride! So get Mum or Dad on board, and prepare to ride to school meeting Michele McLary (Teacher Aide) and crew at Huntington Park on Rafting Ground Road at 8am. It’s going to be rawrsome! Please remember—'no helmet, no ride' FREE DRESS DAY

Thursday 29th March is Free Dress Day to support the Brookfield Cake Stall, held every year at the iconic Brookfield Show. Run by the P & C, this is one of the schools largest fundraisers and an area in need of community engagement through donations and help on the stall. On the day, in exchange for free dress, please bring to your classroom a gold coin or one of 3 baking ingredients (and place in the box provided): Flour, Sugar or Condensed Milk All proceeds go towards fudge workshops and baking for the show. See further detail under the P and C section of this Banter...

SCHOOL OFFICE NEWS ROAD SAFETY Road safety and constantly reminding our children as to the rules is of paramount importance. A number of local residents have contacted the school with concerns regarding our students safety on our local roads, specifically those riding bikes. There has also been concerns regarding children crossing the road unassisted, specifically, please do not ask your child to cross the road to you especially at Brookfield Store. And parents, put children’s safety first and don’t u-turn in the pick-up areas, please go around the block or u-turn further down at Gate 4 (near the creek).

Here are some basic tips for parents to share with your child to ensure they have a safe trip to and from school each day: Children under the age of 10 should always be accompanied by an adult (on foot or bike). When crossing a road, always STOP, LOOK, LISTEN and THINK and keep looking and listening while you cross. Where possible, young children should always hold a grown-up’s hand when crossing the road. Always cross the road at a marked pedestrian crossing and if none is available choose a safe place to cross where

you can see traffic in either direction. When children are old enough to walk or ride to school on their own (10 or older), it’s important to show the child

the safest route. Make sure your child gets in and out of the car on the footpath side, away from traffic. If travelling by bus, always wait until the bus has stopped before getting off and wait for the bus to move away

before finding a safe place to cross. Ensure your child is aware that they should never play on or around roads and encourage them to play in parks,

backyards or other safe places instead. As parents and carers, the best way you can teach your child road safety is to set a good example yourself. Queensland Transport have put together a Back-to-School road safety kit to help parents instil these vital safety skills in young children. For more information, or to download a copy of the kit, visit Queensland Transport’s website at: www.transport.qld.gov.au/backtoschool Coles Vouchers 1 Week to go! Please continue to return the Coles vouchers, the tally is really rising now thanks to our wonderful school community’s support and we’re all very much looking forward to all the sporting gear we will receive from this fundraiser. Lost Property Please remind your children to check lost property before the end of term. Unfortunately there are a lot of items without name tags.

CROSS COUNTRY CUPCAKES A HUGE thank you to all of our wonderful families that donated cupcakes, poppers and their time for our cross country stall today! Leftover cupcakes will be sold at tuckshop over the next few days and empty containers

will be available for pick up from the table outside the tuckshop.

Only 8 weeks until the Brookfield Show!

Our Brookfield school cake stall at the Brookfield Show is one of the biggest fund raisers for our school, and each year we ask parents to ‘’make and bake’’ wonderful home-baked goodies to sell. Next Thursday (29th March and the last day of Term 1) will be FREE DRESS for a Donation Day. Instead of bringing a gold coin to pay for free dress, bring a cake ingredient! We're

looking for white sugar, sweetened condensed milk and flour. Take your donated ingredient to the classroom and they'll go towards fudge (a huge favourite at the Brookfield Show) and cake-making drives for our cake stall at the Brookfield Show. Or you can bring a gold coin instead (or as well) and all money raised will go toward buying cake ingredients. So if you want to “make and bake" in the school holidays, swing by the tuck shop on Thursday afternoon (29th) to grab some jam jars and/or cake ingredients for your favourite recipes. For more information please contact Jill Pierce on 0413 637 789. Thank you! Community News
