Executive Director, School Performance and Director of Educational Leadership Visit This week staff and students were delighted to showcase all of the wonderful things happening within the school to our Executive Director, School Performance, Mr Tim McCallum and our Director of Educational Leadership, Mrs Louise Gallagher when they visited on a school tour and classroom visit. Mr McCallum and Mrs Gallagher were shown around by two of our Year 6 Leaders, Ava and Lillian. They visited our new computer suite and Make a Space area. They were excited to learn about Goalball and hear that Garden Suburb Public School has made it to State for Goalball again this year. Neither Mr McCallum nor Mrs Gallagher had seen a Goalball game before and were very interested to know how Garden Suburb Public School first became involved in the sport. The Seahorses were visited next showing some of the fabulous work they have been doing in literacy groups. When visiting the Quokkas and Quolls in the Quokkas classroom they were able to share some of the fabulous writing from both classes. The last stop on the visit was to the Sharks room where Year 5 explained how to code and make robotics. Both Mr McCallum and Mrs Gallagher were impressed with what they saw on their tour of our school and commented on the level of engagement they saw in each class they visited. Quality Work Congratulations to all students in the Quolls class for sharing their Power Writing with me this week. Students all completed stories on dinosaurs using the Storybird writing program on the computers. Canberra 2018 On the 24th of October we drove down to Canberra, the drive was long & tedious but we eventually got there. The first place that we visited was the National Museum of Australia, where we saw loads of old antiques and we all saw a helicopter show! After that we went to the Royal Australian Mint. Our tour guide showed us around upstairs and showed us the big machine that pressed all of the coins. Most of us pressed our own coins which was very interesting! Then we went on a driving tour of the Australian Embassies and had lots of fun up at Mount Ainslie. On the 25th of October we visited Parliament house where we saw the House of Representatives and the Senate. I learnt about democracy and human rights. Then we went to the National War Memorial and watched cool videos, and we even got to experience what it felt like in a real fighter helicopter from world war 1. We went for a walk and saw 6000+ handcrafted poppies which resemble all of the Australian soldiers who lost their lives in world war. After that, we went to Questacon which was of course, EVERYONE'S FAVOURITE! All of my friends went down the gigantic slide, we got to experience what an earthquake felt like, and saw the big lightning strike which sent shivers down our spines. Once we left Questacon we were on our way to the National Dinosaur museum. Here we saw many cool rocks and gems, we also saw lots of prehistoric dinosaurs and animals. That night back at our cabin, we watched Little Rascals and hung out with our friends. On the 26th of October we visited the Australian Institute of Sport, we got to play around on sport simulators and games. Then we watched gymnasts practising, we saw the men's volleyball and even the pool which was my favourite! After that we played at the pod playground on the hill & looked at all of the cool bonsais at the arboretum. We swung from the ropes at the park, we climbed, and climbed, and climbed! Finally, we went to Old Parliament House that was opened in 1927. We got to sit in the Senate and roll play what it was like in the old days. We had lunch in the Parliamentary gardens, it was a lovely day! Now, we were off. Back to Newcastle, it had been an amazing experience and I would love to do it again! Tayla Briscoe

Canberra 2018 Term 4 is turning out to be the best term of the school year so far because of our AWESOME Canberra Trip. Stage 3 (years 5 and 6) went six hours on a coach with the pleasure of being driven by our lovely and kind, bus driver Paul. We were on the road, all was fine, watching movies, singing along to music and talking to friends, we were having a blast. When we arrived we went straight to The National Museum of Australia. It was interesting looking at all the artifacts, but time flies by when your having fun and we were all back on the bus ready for our next stop, The Royal Australian Mint. The Mint in my opinion was one of my favorites of all the places we went. We enjoyed the stories that our guide told us. I liked the one about the Holy Dollars and the convicts, and how they made lots of them in Egypt. After that, we Minted our own coins in the minting machines and looked at others on displays. The next morning, we were all up bright and early ready for another day ahead. There were lots of places we went to before Questacon and even though they were all interesting, Questacon was the best!!! Walking in to this magical place was amazing, and was by far everyone’s favorite. There were robots and spiral spinning wheels everywhere you went and there were lots of rooms that all had different stories and activities. Most of us went on the big slide at the end and bought lots of things in the gift shop. It was time for us to get back on the bus and visit the next stop on the Itinerary before going back to our cabins at the holiday park. The last and final day had come and we were ready to go to the AIS. When we arrived at The Australian Institute of Sport we went upstairs to the interactive room where we got to play some of the sports that they have at the Olympics. Two of my favorites were the Skeleton and the Wheelchair Races! When being on the Skeleton you had to lie down on your front and move your body side to side to steer. You could see the track on the screen in front of you to make sure you are going in the right direction. The Wheelchair Races was one of the activities everyone got to participate in. Even Torah, who had a broken foot, had a go at racing against her classmates! To use the wheelchair you had to sit on it and use your arms to push yourself along. Even though the wheelchair was not going anywhere it did react to being pushed on the screen as you moved your arms. Luckily there were two wheelchairs so that you could race with friends. It was sad leaving this all behind in Canberra, but we knew that it had been an amazing trip with so much to see and do. Everyone was tired on the journey back home, but when McDonalds kicked in we were full of energy and laughter. I bet years 3 and 4 can not wait to go in 2 years time. Thank you to all the teachers for putting up with all 55 of us!!! By Olivia Benson

Canberra

Canberra was great. My favourite part was when we went to the Australian Institute of Sport. There were Olympic medals and Australian sport uniforms.

Our tour guide took us to the Olympic pool and it was warm. Then we went over to the gym where we saw basketball players lifting weights and working out. Mostly everyone looked all bulky besides a few who were skinny.

Our tour guide took us to the volleyball arena next and it looked quite nice because it had a lovely greeny. Yellow colour like our school. The last thing we went to was the gym for gymnastics. We unfortunately didn’t get to see them do flips because they were warming down.

Canberra was nice but the AIS was superb. Our tour guide was a girl and she was over six feet tall. Can you guess what sport she played? Basketball.

At the very end was the gift shop and I bought a mini cricket bat. We had to wait a while too because some of my class were still shopping. My favourite thing about the AIS was that every athlete was and is committed to their future in sport.

While I was there I saw photos of some superstars that played all sorts of sports including soccer and athletics. With my experience at the AIS I will never stop working to succeed. Like my Grandpa said, “Always work to succeed and die in success.”

My Japanese Experience On Wednesday, about two weeks ago, a few of the year 5 students went to Cardiff High School for a Japanese Lesson, taught by one of their lovely teachers. We learnt how to spell our names in Japanese and say them. Saying them was harder than it looked, but we eventually got the hang of it. We picked up small cubes with chopsticks but it was hard for some of us. At the end we sung Baby Shark in Japanese!!! It was a lot of fun and i hope the students that are going to woodworks will have fun and work well with the other students from other schools!

The iPLAY Program

To support our students’ learning and achievement our school is involved in The iPLAY Program.

What is iPLAY?

iPLAY is a teacher professional development program, designed to provide primary school teachers with the skills and strategies to improve sport and PE lessons. The iPLAY leaders will oversee small changes in the school to ensure children have plenty of opportunities to be physically active. Research has shown that children who are more physically active perform better at school. The iPLAY Program is here to help us increase student physical activity, improve learning, and improve overall student health.

Last week we were lucky enough to be observed by Tony Salaris from Belmont High School who has been mentoring us along the way.

Watch this space for more exciting things happening with iPLAY!

Goalball

Our junior and senior goal ball teams have started training again in preparation for the NSW State Knock-out Cup. Both teams will be competing on Thursday the 28th of November at Sydney Olympic Park. Our senior team will be defending their state champion’s title and our junior team are competing at the state level for the first time.

Goalball is a team sport designed specifically for athletes with a vision impairment. Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into the opponents' goal. All team members are blindfolded. The ball is thrown by hand and never kicked and stopped using ear-hand coordination. All students in years 3-6 are learning to play goalball as part of Friday sport. Wet program The Quokkas and Quolls have begun a swim school program at Lambton Pool. They are having a wonderful time as they learn to swim and gain water safety knowledge.
