Our Gyroscope Sponsors Wednesday, July 18, 2007 VOLUME 9 No. 27 For Club Corner, Monday, July 16, 2007 The Rotary Club of Huntsville met for lunch on Wednesday, July 11 th in the Community Room of the West Hill Mall. New President Jon Volkmer called the meeting to order with Rotarian of the Year John Yarabeck offering the prayer and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Rotarians David Lanoe and Bert Bertling provided lunch in grand fashion, but David Lanoe failed to draw the right card in our weekly drawing. Booby prize Sarge.Rotarian Norman Ward led Rotarians in singing "My Country Tis of Thee," often grimacing as Rotarian Richie Harris drifted off key. Talented Councilman Wayne Barrett accompanied our "singing" on the piano. Rotarian and ex-District Governor Dan Davis, a man who does not often swear, swore in Rotarian Rhonda Ellisor as our new president-elect. In addition to our new president, Jon Volkmer, Rotarians elected Walter Bennett as vice president, John Yarabeck as secretary, and Carol Joy as treasurer. New board members include Past President Greg Gathright and Rotarians Bill Hodges, Daughn Pruitt, Dennis Reed, Andy Graves, and Lyndon Wright.Former mayor, author, and Rotarian, Jane Monday introduced our speaker. State Representative Lois Kolkhorst delivered a spirited report on the past session of the legislature. Among her many accomplishments in the last session, she slew the dragon hiding behind the Texas State Corridor, legislating that any profits made on such toll roads go to the State of Texas, not some foreign millionaires. In HB2 she helped lower property tax rates. (Maybe next time she can tie the tacky state hands responsible for our annual 20% appraisal increases, taking away the rate cuts, regardless of local values.) Ms. Kolkhorst almost single-handedly saved the name of Sam Houston State University, etching the name in state law. She also sent a message to scofflaws who hire illegals that they must reimburse the state for costs incurred in providing pubic services to illegal employees. Ms. Kolkhorst should be recognized for her work in obtaining the cash grant provided our Veteran’s Museum, brainchild of Rotarian Charolette Olenik. Huntsville will also benefit from a 2% increase in wages for TDCJ employees delivered by LoisKolkhorst. (ps She also cooks.) Rotarian Gary Hood delivered a report on the latest issue of the Rotarian Magazine. President Volkmer closed the meeting with the Rotarian Four Way Test, reminding Rotarians of our ethical pledge. Our giving goal for the Rotary Foundation is 100.00 per Rotarian for a total of 11,000.00. The District Governor’s goal is at least one dollar per member for 100% participation. We will have a contribution drive for this goal in April. Every member of the Rotary Club of Huntsville is asked to contribute a minimum of at least 1.00, preferably 100.00 to help meet the club’s goal. More details will be made available as April approaches.
