LILLY ENDOWMENT SENDS LOCAL TEACHER TOALL THIRTEEN PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARIES
Continued from last week. Mr. Steve Lee, NJ-SP Jr. Highteacher, visits to Presidential Libraries.
Gravesite of Ron & Nancy
Young Footballer
Our 40th president was Ronald Reagan. Reagan's presidentialmuseum is located in the hills of Simi Valley, California and is thelargest of the thirteen presidential museums. Reagan's childhoodyears in Dixon, Illinois introduced “Dutch” to the small-town val-ues of hard-work, tolerance, and education. His mother raisedRonald in the Disciples of Christ faith where he became commit-ted to God and family. Ronald had fond memories of his mom'scompassion and generosity. In high school, Ronald played foot-ball and basketball. He was president of the student body, actedin school plays, and wrote for the yearbook. He was a very goodswimmer who worked seven summers as a lifeguard. Over thattime, he saved 77 people from drowning. Ronald attended EurekaCollege in Illinois where he majored in Economics. In college hewas an average student but excelled in extracurriculars.Following college Ronald went into broadcasting and then foundhis way to Hollywood where he began his career in the entertain-ment business before eventually making his way into politics. These developmental years in the life of Ronald Reagan are welldocumented throughout this museum and make for hours of veryinteresting viewing.Ronald Reagan inspired many Americans and his museum illus-
trates that legacy. One of the many highlights of this museum isthe opportunity to walk onboard the actual Air Force One planethat flew Reagan and six other presidents. You might rememberseeing this as a backdrop for one of the GOP debates earlier inthe year. This plane is virtually a “flying White House.” The pres-ident, while aboard, is basically able to complete all tasks that arerequired of him while in the White House itself. Of the seven pres-idents who flew on this particular Air Force One, Reagan used itthe most flying to all parts of the world, including to three summitmeetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Another impressive exhibit is the 6,338 pound, 9 ? foot tall piece
of the Berlin Wall where one can reflect on freedom and democ-racy. When this exhibit opened, President Reagan remarked “Letour children and grandchildren come here and see this wall andreflect on what it meant to history. Let them understand that onlyvigilance and strength will deter tyranny.” Also found on thegrounds of this museum is the final resting place of both RonaldReagan and his wife, Nancy. Nancy, who just recently died, wasburied next to her husband just last month. It is a touchingreminder of their love and devotion for each other and overlooksa majestic view of Simi Valley. This is a great way to end your visitto the Ronald Reagan Library.

Fun Learning Ideas for the Month of MayThere’s more to May than Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and VictoriaDay. Here are some other holidays that offer fun learning opportuni-ties for you and your child:• May 1- Mother Goose Day...Read favorite Mother Goose rhymes with yourchild.• May 4 - National Weather Observers Day... Go outside and observe theclouds with your child. Or make a collage of weather-related pictures cut frommagazines.• May 17 - Armed Forces Day...Have your child write a letter or draw a pictureto thank someone for their military service.• May 18 - International Museum Day...Talk with your child about the importance of museums. Make plans to visit one online or in person.• May 21 - On this date in 1881... Clara Barton founded the American RedCross. Head to the library or the internet to learn more about this compassionate leader of charitable causes.
