JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSThinking bridge

By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: North ♠ K Q 6 Vul: Both ♥ Q 10 8 2 ♦ Q J 10 8 ♣ K 3 ♠ J 10 9 5 ♠ 8 4 2 ♥ A J ♥ 9 5 ♦ K 2 ♦ A 9 7 6 ♣ 10 9 6 4 2 ♣ Q 8 7 5 ♠ A 7 3 ♥ K 7 6 4 3 ♦ 6 4 3 ♣ A J West North East South 1♦ Pass 1 ♥ Pass 2♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

Opening lead: ♠J. Bidding commentary: Looks sane. Lead commentary: Also looks sane. Play commentary: After winning the spade

in dummy, lead a low heart, protecting against all four hearts on your left and also giving you a chance to finesse the 10 if the king loses to the ace. You probably would not take that finesse, however, because a 2-2 division of the hearts is more likely than West’s having A-J-x.

Defensive commentary: After winning the ♥A, West can see further defensive tricks will come from the minor suits – and he needs three tricks to defeat the contract. There are two possibilities: (1) Partner has the ♣A-Q and that plus your ♦K will give you the three needed tricks; (2) Partner has the ♦A, in which case you can switch to the ♦K and score two tricks in diamonds followed by a diamond ruff. Which shall it be?

If partner has the ♣A Q, declarer has jumped to 4♥ after partner’s single raise with 7-8 HCP: the ♠A, the ♥K and maybe the ♣J. Hardly. Actually, if partner has the ♣A Q, you can exit with a spade or a heart and still beat the contract by shifting to a club when in with the ♦K.

If partner just has the ♦A, declarer has the ♠A, the ♥K and the ♣A, plus possibly the ♣J or ♣Q. That is a much more likely hand considering the bidding. It’s clear your best chance is in the diamond suit, so shift to the king at trick three. If you are right, it will be the only card in your hand you can lead to defeat the contract and be partner’s hero... at least for this deal.

Tip: As a defender, go back to the bidding. It often tells you how many points declarer has, which helps you plan the defense. Further, if you know how many points partner has, you will know how many points declarer has.

Common errors and how to avoid them

By Brent Manley

This one came from the late d’Arcy Albertsen of Walnut Creek CA.

As we waited for the elevator at a hotel that was hosting a tournament, my husband turned to the young couple next to us. “How did you make out last night?” he inquired. It was a perfectly normal question at a tournament.

We quickly learned that the two were not bridge players when the young man glowered at my husband and exclaimed, “That is none of your business!”

Poor signaling, Part 4I have already written a lot about count

signals and how important they can be. A proper signal often makes the difference between defeating a contract and letting it make.

That said, it’s not a good idea to give count religiously. If declarer knows you and your partner always give count, he will take advantage of the information.

Suppose, for example, that you hold ♦J 9 8 6 and are looking at ♦Q 10 5 4 in dummy. Declarer plays the ♦A and continues with the king. Giving count by playing the 9 or 8 and then your lowest diamond would tell declarer you started with four diamonds.

If your partner followed low twice and declarer believes your signals, he will play low from his hand and insert dummy’s 10. Your signal has given away the show and made it easy for declarer to take four diamond tricks instead of the three he would have if he made the routine play of going up with the queen.

This may seem like a silly example, but if you are playing against a declarer who watches the spots and is adept at drawing inferences, count signals can make life easy for the opponents.

So, you ask, how do you decide when to give count and when not to? In the previous column, you saw how important it is to give count when dummy has a strong suit with no outside entries. If one of you has the ace, the other must signal count in the suit so that the ace is taken at just the right moment in the play. That is the most common situation, but count can be important in other scenarios.

Suppose the opponents have blasted in to a slam and partner leads the ♣A. Dummy comes down with three clubs to the queen. If partner also has the ♣K, he needs your help. Partner needs to know whether his ♣K will cash, defeating the contract, or be ruffed when declarer started with a singleton. In the latter case, the establishment of the ♣Q might give declarer an unmakeable contract.

Your job is to signal – in the clearest way possible – how many clubs you hold. If you hold, say, ♣10 8 6 4, you must play the 10, clearly indicating an even number of clubs. Partner may be able to determine from his own hand whether your holding is two or four and make the right decision. If you play randomly in this situation, partner will have to guess what to do. When you can help partner avoid a guess, you should do it.

This situation isn’t confined to slam contracts. In a pairs game, trying to cash a second club trick when declarer started with a singleton will unnecessarily give up an extra trick that could change an average into a zero.

Here’s a good rule of thumb for signaling when partner leads the ace (ace from A-K): When dummy hits with low cards in the suit partner has led, signal attitude (high is encouraging, low is discouraging); when there is a “stopper” in dummy, usually three to queen, give a count signal to let partner know if a second trick will cash. This is especially useful if partner is leading a suit he has bid and you have raised. Based on your raise, partner will know you have at least three cards. If it’s four, you must let partner know so that he can make an informed decision about how to proceed. Play a low card (odd number) with three, a high card (even number) with four.

With a doubleton, of course, you will start a count signal by playing high so that if a ruff is possible you will get it.

Tomorrow: Mistakes on opening lead.

Roberts earns associatenational director rank

Mike Roberts, tournament director from Youngstown OH, has been promoted to associate national rank.

Originally from Victoria BC, Roberts now lives in Youngstown OH. He has been playing bridge about 30 years, starting at age 13. His interest in directing was developed at the bridge club in Victoria once owned by National TD Matt Smith. He eventually was hired to work at sectionals and later regionals.

Roberts worked at his first NABC in his hometown in 1999. He is now a full-time ACBL employee. He says he enjoys the variety of experiences TD work brings. “There are new challenges each time,” he says.

Hard to seeBy Barry Rigal

This deal was played on the third day of the Baze Senior Knockout Teams (hands rotated). Dlr: East ♠ Q 10 7 4 2 Vul: None ♥ 8 4 ♦ 8 3 ♣ 10 8 4 2 ♠ 8 ♥ J 6 2 ♦ A 10 7 6 ♣ J 9 7 5 3 West North East South 1♠ 2♠ (1) Pass 3♣ (2) 3♠ 4♥ Dbl All Pass

(1) Michaels cuebid: hearts and a minor(2) Pass or correctYou doubled 4♥, expecting a trump promotion

at trick two, and lead your spade to the 10 and jack, ruffed by declarer. The ♦K comes next. Do you duck or win?

Let’s say you duck. Declarer leads the ♦Q and you win, partner following in diamonds with the 2 and 9. Take it from there.

At both tables, West played a low club after winning the ♦A. This was the full deal: ♠ Q 10 7 4 2 ♥ 8 4 ♦ 8 3 ♣ 10 8 4 2 ♠ 8 ♠ A K J 9 6 5 3 ♥ J 6 2 ♥ A 5 ♦ A 10 7 6 ♦ 9 2 ♣ J 9 7 5 3 ♣ K 6 ♠ — ♥ K Q 10 9 7 3 ♦ K Q J 5 4 ♣ A Q

After the club shift, Jeff Aker played the contract carefully. He ruffed a diamond with the ♥8, and when East overruffed to return a spade, he ruffed high to play the ♥Q and ♥10, followed by a claim.

The winning defense is not easy to spot. You must play a third diamond yourself to let partner ruff with the ace and play a spade. Declarer must ruff high, and now when he draws trumps, you can win the ♥J and exit in hearts. Partner will get a club trick at trick 13.

TD Marsh promoted to national rank

Tom Marsh, veteran tournament director from San Antonio TX, was promoted to national rank on Oct. 23. He will observe the 20th anniversary of his first TD job in May of next year.

Marsh is originally from western Massachusetts, landing in San Antonio after being stationed there while in the U.S. Army. He got into directing at the suggestion of Marie Bailey, who ran a bridge club in San Antonio.

Directing, he says, “is a game of thinking on your feet. I don’t like it, I love it – and I love the people.”

Marsh plays bridge only occasionally now. Most of the time when he plays cards it’s poker, and mainly online. A lot of his free time is spent with his three grandchildren, who live in San Antonio.

Bart Bramley, Dallas TX – 16 NABC wins, including the Senior KO on Tuesday, and a gold medal in the d’Orsi Senior Bowl in 2007, silver in the 2005 World Transnational Open Teams and a bronze in the 1998 Open Teams.

Lynn Deas, Schenectady NY – 26 NABC win, including the Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams at this tournament, and six world championships, including three gold in the Venice Cup.

Beth Palmer, Chevy Chase MD – 27 NABC wins, including the Women’s BAM in Providence, eight Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams titles and three world titles, including two Venice Cup gold medals.

Judi Radin, New York City – 16 North American championships, four gold medals in world championships – three in women’s teams and one in women’s pairs – and four silver medals.

Michael Rosenberg, Cupertino CA – 14 NABC wins and a gold medal in the Open Teams (Rosenblum Cup) in 1994, two silver medals in the Open Teams and a Bermuda Bowl bronze in 2000.

Howard Weinstein, Omaha NE – Nine NABC wins plus a silver medal in the 2007 Bermuda Bowl and bronze medals in WBF teams competition in 1998 and 2000.

Eddie Wold, Houston TX – 15 NABC wins and gold medals in the 2013 d’Orsi Senior Bowl and the 2001 World Transnational Open Teams.

Players must be 60 years old to be on the ballot. To be elected to the Hall of Fame, a player must be on at least 50% of the ballots cast. Electors can vote for up to four players.

for Gupta. She played with Billy Miller, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Lew Stansby and Bart Bramley. Carolyn Lynch, who captained the runners-up, played with Mike Passell, Garey Hayden, Adam Zmudzinski, Cezary Balicki and Marc Jacobus, an addition to last year’s team of five.

With the win, Rodwell achieved an unusual milestone: At age 57, he now has 57 North American championships to his credit, one more than his longtime partner, Meckstroth.

The win last year was Gupta’s first North American title after just three years of playing “serious tournament bridge.” She is the founder and was head of Digital Link Corp, retiring nine years ago to try her hand at bridge. In the 2012 Senior KO, Gupta came in second with the same teammates except that Bob Hamman played with Meckstroth.

Gupta had a scare in the early rounds of the 2014 Senior KO, winning in the round of 16 by just 15 IMPs after trailing by 37 at the half. Throughout the event, Gupta was at least 30 IMPs behind in every match except for the final, when they forged a 30-IMP lead after 32 boards against Lynch and company.

Just the right touchBy Barry Rigal

Matthew Granovetter brought home a delicate 3NT on this deal from the Baze Senior Knockout Teams. Dlr: South ♠ Q 8 5 Vul: None ♥ Q 7 3 2 ♦ 7 2 ♣ A J 4 2 ♠ A 10 6 4 2 ♠ 7 ♥ K 9 6 ♥ A 10 8 ♦ A 10 ♦ K 6 5 4 3 ♣ Q 5 3 ♣ K 10 8 7 ♠ K J 9 3 ♥ J 5 4 ♦ Q J 9 8 ♣ 9 6 West North East South Pass 1♠ Pass 1NT Pass 2♣ Pass 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

Dan Morse, West, upgraded his 10s to raise to 3NT. Granovetter ducked the lead of a diamond honor, won the next and led a club to the 10, followed by a club to the queen. North ducked this and won the third club. South discarded an encouraging low spade (a discouraging upside-down ♥5 might have been hard to read). Back came a spade, ducked by Granovetter, and now South was caught in a three-way ending with no good choice. Playing a diamond or a spade would let declarer build that suit for one more trick, and his choice of the ♥J let Granovetter win the ♥K, cash the ♠A and finesse in hearts for his ninth trick.

If South keeps the ♠3 and pitches a heart, he can exit with a spade. Declarer ducks again and North wins cheaply to leave this ending: ♠ Q ♥ Q 7 3 2 ♦ — ♣ 4 ♠ A 10 6 ♠ — ♥ K 9 6 ♥ A 10 8 ♦ — ♦ K 6 ♣ — ♣ 8 ♠ K 9 ♥ J 5 ♦ Q 9 ♣ —

A third spade leaves declarer with only eight tricks.

Smoking PolicySmoking is not permitted in the playing area

during any bridge playing event at an NABC. This includes electronic smoking devices.

Weekend squeezesMark Itabashi of Murrieta CA submitted two

squeeze deals from the first weekend of the Fall NABC in Providence. Itabashi was playing with Steve Love of Laguna Niguel CA.

The first deal comes from Saturday’s Daylight Open Pairs: Dlr: North ♠ K 9 6 Vul: Both ♥ A 8 3 ♦ K J 9 8 5 2 ♣ 5 ♠ A 8 7 4 2 ♠ 10 5 3 ♥ Q J 9 2 ♥ 6 4 ♦ 4 ♦ A 10 6 3 ♣ K Q 2 ♣ 10 7 6 4 ♠ Q J ♥ K 10 7 5 ♦ Q 7 ♣ A J 9 8 3

West North East South Itabashi Love 1♦ Pass 2♣ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♥ Pass 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

West won the opening spade lead and returned a spade to dummy’s queen. The ♦Q was ducked, but East won the second diamond by capturing the king with the ace and then cleared spades. Declarer then put East back on lead with the ♦10. On the diamonds, West had discarded the ♥2, the ♣2 and a spade, while a club and a heart had been pitched from dummy. This was the ending: ♠ — ♥ A 8 3 ♦ 8 5 ♣ 5 ♠ 8 ♠ — ♥ Q J 9 ♥ 6 4 ♦ — ♦ — ♣ K Q ♣ 10 7 6 4 ♠ — ♥ K 10 7 ♦ — ♣ A J 9

East would have done best by exiting with a club, but he played a heart instead. Declarer won dummy’s ♥K, crossed to the ♥A and cashed the last diamonds. West could not keep the good heart and both club honors, so Itabashi scored the remaining tricks for plus 430 and a huge matchpoint score.

The next deal comes from the second qualifying session of the Mitchell Open BAM Teams:

Dlr: East ♠ K Vul: E-W ♥ J 9 8 7 6 3 Bd: 6 ♦ J 8 2 ♣ K J 2 ♠ 10 8 2 ♠ A Q J 5 4 ♥ K 5 4 ♥ — ♦ 10 6 4 3 ♦ Q 9 7 ♣ Q 4 3 ♣ A 9 8 7 6 ♠ 9 7 6 3 ♥ A Q 10 2 ♦ A K 5 ♣ 10 5 West North East South Itabashi Love 1♠ Pass 1NT (1) 2♥ Dbl 2♠ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

An aggressive auction saw North-South arrive in 4♥ on the good lead of the ♠A. East continued with the ♠Q, ruffed. The ♥9 went to West’s king and a heart was returned. Dummy’s ace won.

The ♣10 was covered by the queen, king and ace, and the ♣9 came back. Itabashi won the ♣J, ruffed a club in dummy, ruffed a spade in his hand and ran trumps to squeeze East in diamonds and spades in the following ending: ♠ — ♥ 8 ♦ J 8 2 ♣ — ♠ — ♠ J ♥ — ♥ — ♦ 10 6 4 3 ♦ Q 9 7 ♣ — ♣ — ♠ 9 ♥ — ♦ A K 5 ♣ —

On the last trump, East has no good discard available.

This squad was second in the Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams that ended Monday evening: Dror Padon, Alon Birman, Gary Cohler, Stan Tulin, captain Michael Kamil and Billy Cohen.

Sam Cohen 1950-2014Sam Cohen, one of Chicago’s top players,

died Nov. 30 from complications of lung cancer. He was 64.

Cohen, a Gold Life Master, was second in the 2005 Vanderbilt Knockout Teams. He and wife Deborah were third in the Lebhar IMP Pairs in 2002.

A successful attorney, Cohen was lauded by many Chicago-area players attending the Fall NABC in Providence for his pleasant demeanor.

Expert Ralph Katz, a longtime friend of Cohen’s said, “Sam was a very good player, but I remember him first as being a really nice guy. He was so well-grounded, and he was devoted to his family. He was a great friend.”

Ellen Kent, formerly of the Chicago area, said, “Sam was such a sweet man. He will be terribly missed.”

Cohen is survived by his wife Deborah, his daughter Lexie Cohen and his father Edward Cohen. He was preceded in death by his daughter Kimberley Cohen and his mother Elizabeth Cohen.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home in Naperville IL.

Second in the Super Senior Pairs this year were Leonard Melander and Bert Newman.

Taking the maxJeff Taylor and Craig Robinson won the Super

Senior Pairs Monday evening, and on this deal from the second final session, Taylor took the maximum number of tricks as declarer to score 21.5 out of 25 matchpoints: Dlr: West ♠ Q Vul: Both ♥ J 9 8 2 Bd: 20 ♦ K 10 5 4 3 ♣ 10 5 2 ♠ 10 9 7 6 2 ♠ K J 8 ♥ A K 10 3 ♥ 6 ♦ Q 7 ♦ A J 9 6 ♣ Q 7 ♣ K 9 6 4 3 ♠ A 5 4 3 ♥ Q 7 5 4 ♦ 8 2 ♣ A J 8 West North East South Taylor Robinson Pass Pass 1♣ Pass 1♠ Pass 2♠ Pass 4♠ All Pass

North led the ♦4 which ran to declarer’s queen. Taylor then played a diamond to the jack, and when that held, he played a low club to his hand. South rose with the ace and exited with a low heart. Taylor won the ♥A, cashed the ♣Q, ruffed a heart and tried the ♦A. When South ruffed, declarer overruffed, cashed the ♥K and ruffed his last heart. With nothing but trumps left in his hand, Taylor called for dummy’s last trump, the ♠K, and when the favorable layout in the trump suit was revealed, he claimed 11 tricks.

Can the defense do better by leading trumps at tricks one and two? No. With clubs 3-3 and the diamond honors all in the slot, declarer can always come to 11 tricks in spades.

Answers to puzzle on page 5

Be Scent-sitive!Some people have an extreme sensitivity to

fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances.

Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem.

The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.

Masterpoint disclaimerScores as reported in the Daily Bulletin are

subject to change because of score changes or corrections. The masterpoint awards as shown are, therefore, also subject to change.

Entry FeesPlayers must be ACBL members whose service

fees or dues are current in order to compete in any of the following nationally ranked events: Baze Senior Knockouts, Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs, Keohane North American Swiss Teams, Marsha May Sternberg Women’s Board-a-Match Teams, Mitchell Open Board-a-Match Teams, Nail Life Master Open Pairs, Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams, Smith Life Master Women’s Pairs, Senior Mixed Pairs and the Super Senior Pairs. The entry fees for these contests are $20 per player per session.

Note: Only ACBL members are eligible to play in NABC+ events. $1.50 per person per session benefits the International Fund.

Players must also be current ACBL members to play in the 0–5000 Mini Blue Ribbon Pairs and the 0–10,000 Swiss Teams. The entry fee is $17 per player per session.

Regional championships are $16 per player per session for ACBL members, and $20 for nonmembers. All other events are $15 per player per session for ACBL members, $19 for non-members.

*Notice to players who reside outside North America: Participation in the Kaplan Blue Ribbon or 0–5000 Life Master Pairs is limited to ACBL members who have achieved the rank of Life Master. Players who reside outside North America and who do not meet this criteria, but feel they are otherwise eligible to participate, must receive a waiver prior to the commencement of the contest.

For waiver information, please see the Director-in-Charge at the selling site at least one hour prior to the commencement of the event. Please note that players who have been waived into previous Life Master Pairs do not have to re-apply.

Convention card reminder

Each player is required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

How old is a Senior? The definition of a Senior (for the purpose of

Senior events, tournaments, special games, etc.) has matured — from 55 to 60 years old. Those ‘tweeners who previously qualified as Seniors and who have been magically rejuvenated are still eligible. If you were born before Jan. 1, 1959, you’re still a Senior for the purposes of playing in any ACBL Senior event.

Electronic Device Policy The electronic device policy at NABCs allows

players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off.

Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session

The policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, kibitzers and play recorders, except those designated by the ACBL and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

Use of the Bidding Box — Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

Josephine PesceJosephine’s life was

enhanced by the game of bridge. She played three to four times a week, well in to her nineties. Bridge was an important part of her life.

She enjoyed entertaining her bridge friends and would routinely invite them to dine as guests of her son Bob, at the finest restaurants in Providence!

She always had a smile on her face and had a kind word for everyone. A vibrant, special and elegant lady who is deeply missed by all.

Madeline ArnoldMadeline Arnold was the grand dame of

bridge in Rhode Island since the Forties. She ran the Bridge Club of Rhode Island along with Brad

Oxnard for many years.

Her elegance and great manner permeated throughout the club where she was admired and well liked.

Brad OxnardBrad Oxnard, like Madeline Arnold, ran the

Bridge Club of Rhode Island since the Forties. He always encouraged a rubber bridge game

after the duplicate games had finished to keep the excitement going.

Brad was a very low-key person who was highly respected by everyone.

Daniel C. ColatostiDan recently passed away

in July. He achieved the rank of Grand Life Master.

Dan won the Keohane North American Swiss Teams in St. Louisin 1997. He placed second in the Truscott Senior Swiss Teams in 2010 and was second in the Baze Senior Knockout Teams in 2002 and 2003. He won these events with his longtime bridge friend and partner, John Malley, also a Grand Life Master.

Dan’s tenacity, commitment and analytical mind enable him to become one of the most accomplished players in New England. With more than 13,000 masterpoints, Dan ranked No. 14 in New England and 257 among Grand Life Masters in North America.
