For the 2016 year, 28.6% of participating associates did not qualify at the 33 BMI level. At the end of 2016, we will be able to compare the two full years as far as how many associates earned the incentive based on partic- ipating in health coaching, smoking cessation, and other programs designed to help associates meet health goals. What’s a Physician Dyad?Jenni Friedly, COO and Russell Adams, MD, Medical Director of Operations

For UnityPoint Health – Waterloo to achieve its goal of creating a patient-centered, physician-driven culture, we had to engage our physicians dierently and let them drive the change. In January 2015, we implemented the physician dyad leadership model, which has provided a functional structure to drive strat-egy and quality.

Here’s how it works:Allen Hospital CEO Pam Delagardelle and Physician Leader Kyle Christiason are responsible for developing the region’s vi-sion and strategy. Meanwhile, COO Jenni Friedly and Medical Director of Operations Dr. Russell Adams form the hospital dyad and Vice President of Clinic Operations Sarah Brown and UnityPoint Clinic Medical Director Dr. Dan Glascock form the clinic dyad. They are responsible for imple-mentation.

This functional chart shows how the physician dyads (orange) are respon-sible to lead strategy and quality deployment within aligned service lines.Dyads work with service line leaders to develop annual goals based on the region’s strategy and quality metrics. Performance to the goals is tracked monthly with scorecards.

ResultsThe dyad model of leadership deployed by UnityPoint Health – Waterloo, with strong partnership from independent providers, has demonstrated significant benefits measured primarily by the high level of physician en-gagement and survey scores. Success can also be measured by improved performance on many strategic metrics including readmission rates, patient experience and value-based purchasing.

Q: In regard to the BMI guidelines, how are the associates doing? What percentage met the 35% last year and what percentage met the 32.9%? Have the associates overall decreased their BMI? In other words, has it worked to charge more for associates and oered the incentive to lose weight or not?

A: First, let me clarify that insurance premiums are at a set amount for all associates and we provide an incentive (discount) for meeting certain health goals (weight, blood pressure, choles-terol). Associates aren’t charged more, they simply aren’t qualifying for the incentive.

Regarding improvement, we do know that 53% of participating associates have reported increased exercise and fitness levels. In addition, 67% reduced their nutrition risk and 14% reduced their BMI. For the 2015 year, 26.9% of par-ticipating associates across UnityPoint Health did not qualify for the incentive based on a BMI of 35. Did you know, healthcare workers often contribute to the spread of infectious diseases in health care settings? You can help by staying home if you are sick (you should not come to work if you have a fever), always cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wash your hands frequently.

Q: Is the BMI lowering in 2017?

A: The Medical Advisory Group (acommittee within UnityPoint Health) out-lined a plan to lower the BMI to less than 30 by 2017. At this current time, it would be best to prepare for this change and stay tuned for more details as they become available.Annie Horrigan, Wellness

Q: Lately, Allen has been short staedfor nurses and techs. Is there a limit to the amount of patients a nurse can take? There have been times I have felt un-comfortable with the patient load I have been given. This is not a work issue but a patient safety issue.

A: Assignments of patients are basedon the illness of the patient, the treatment the patient requires and the amount of patients on the unit. If you are uncomfort-able with the patient load that you have been assigned, please discuss this with the charge nurse for that shift, your manager or the house supervisor.Mary Hagen, Administration

Q: Does ‘on call’ work dierently ineach department? I don’t think just be-cause my supervisor can’t fill the empty holes in the schedule that we should be required to stay or come in if we are on call. I was under the impression that we were only to be on call if someone called in.

A: It is the manager’s responsibilityto ensure that there is adequate sta¨ng (which includes the needed skill set and the needed number of sta) to meet the needs of the patients in that department. ‘On call’ works the same in all depart-ments in that you are on call if needed to meet the needs of the patients on that unit. We are experiencing a workforce shortage and it takes all of us to create an environment where sta want to work and we can retain our workforce. We all have ownership in helping to retain the sta that we have. Thank you for helping us create and maintain a place associates want to have their career.Mary Hagen, Administration

Healthy Tips for Grilling andBarbequeGrilling is a great way to get out of the kitchen and cook at home while still incorporating fresh pro-duce into meals. Here are some tips and tricks to grilling healthier meals this summer:

• Read food labels and compare nutrition content of barbeque orbasting sauces.

• Try grilling fruits! Specifically pineapple, peaches, and pears for atasty summer dessert.

• Try grilling vegetables! From asparagus to corn, everything tastesbetter on the grill.

• Try incorporating leaner meats, including chicken or turkey, whengrilling.

Grilling should not be limited to burgers and hot dogs. With some strategic grill-ing guidance, healthy, nutritious meals made on the grill alone are possible.

We want to hear from you! To be featured, please submit your favorite grilling recipes or healthy grilling success stories to [email protected].

During April, every a¨liate hosted a Values Alignment Workshop for all of their leaders. These events were led by each Regional CEO and the Regional Adoption Executive. At these small group workshops, participants heard senior leaders share their vision for our culture, leadership expectations and the importance of UnityPoint Health acting as one team.

They also prepared the Values Endorse-ment Survey, which will occur from May 9 – 27. We are doing this survey to confirm associate support for the rec-ommended values, because these values

will define how we perform, who we hire, how we promote and how we will deliver the Best Outcome for Every Patient Every Time.

We will be using the feedback we receive from the Values Endorsement Survey to fine tune how we talk about our com-mon values and ensure the values:• Honor the best of our individual

a¨liates• Create an aspirational culture for

tomorrow• Unify us regardless of our role and

where we work

As you know, these com-mon values were created by taking values from across the entire system (our roots) and developing language that reflects the best of who we are.

We are not starting over, but rather we are aligning our values to ensure we deliver an unforgettable health care experience, for our em-ployees, patients and families, and our communities.
