The top number is called systolic pressure. This is measured when the heart is contracting.

The bottom number is called diastolic pressure. This is measured when the heart is relaxing.

High Blood Pressure

• A person with a systolic reading of anything higher than 140 mmHg, is considered to have hypertension, or high blood pressure

Low Blood Pressure

• A person with a systolic reading of anything lower than 100 mmHg, is considered to have hypotension, or low blood pressure.
