STATE TIMES NEWSNEW DELHI: Union Mini-ster of State (IndependentCharge) for Development ofNorth Eastern Region(DoNER) and MoS PMO, DrJitendra Singh said that in thechanging scenario of contem-porary India, Type 2 DiabetesMellitus is now affecting, boththe young and the elderly.
Speaking as chief guest at aseminar organised by DelhiMedical Association, Singhsaid, on the one hand, there is ademographic change in thepopulation composition ofIndia, on the other hand, thereis also a change in the diseasespectrum in the last twodecades.
Singh said, while on the onehand, over 65 per cent popula-
tion of India today comprises ofage group below 40 years, onthe other hand, the number ofpopulation above 60 is also con-stantly on the rise. We would, therefore, have to attend toboth of these phenomenon
simultaneously, he said. Not only this, Singh said, the
fact not fully realised is thatdiseases like Type 2 DiabetesMellitus or heart attack, whichwere hitherto considered to bediseases of middle age or late
age, are now also affecting theyoung. On the other hand, atthe same time, he said, diseasesof late age, including variouscancers which were not preva-lent earlier are now becomingmanifest because large numberof people are living long enoughto be affected by these diseases. Thus, there is a disease overlapas well as age overlap which isdetermining the current healthscenario of India, he added.
Singh hinted at the mush-rooming of private sectorhealth care hospitals and out-lets in urban or semi-urbanareas, as a result of which, hesaid, the "urban patient gotover-treated while the ruralpatient was left under-treated".
He said, a balance will haveto be drawn so that every new
private sector outlet opening inthe city areas also gives anundertaking for establishingan outlet in rural areas.
Singh lamented that eventoday in remote areas ofNortheast and several otherparts of the country, large num-ber of patients did not haveaccess to adequate health care,He said, he had advocated theconcept of helicopter based clin-ics to provide makeshift special-ity OPD services to people inperipheral areas.
National President IndianMedical Association (IMA), DrK.K Aggarwal, PresidentDelhi Medical Association, DrVijay Kumar Malhotra andSenior Vice President, DrVinod Sood also spoke on theoccasion.
