They are rallying opposition against the proposed merger of pri- vate providers Camp Australia, which runs 742 centres across the country and Junior Adventures Group (JAG), whose OSHClub and Helping Hands operates at 400 schools. Not-for-profit OOSH operators say traditional parent-run services are under threat as the merged commercial enterprise would own about a third of the entire national market and limit parents’ choice in price and care options. School community-based centres fear the merged entity may be able to entice the State Govern- ment into privatising its operations by offering more money to schools. OOSH operators charge parents about $34 a day to be able to drop their children off at school at 7am and pick them up by 6pm on work days. Eligible families are able to re- cover half that cost from the Fed- eral Government’s Childcare Rebate and Childcare Benefit.
