Ystad has attended productions of Henrik Ibsen's dramas in countries as diverse as Egypt, Mexico, China, and Bangladesh, as well as in many European countries. She will address the ways in which countries around the world have adapted and translated Ibsen’s dramas to suit their own cultural and political climates. The adjustments to the texts —particularly around the roles of women—are sometimes surprising. Currently, Ystad is the General Editor (Editor in Chief) of Henrik Ibsens skrifter (2005–), a coordinated scholarly edition of the entire corpus of Ibsen’s writings in both print and electronic form. She is an elected member of The Norwegian Academy for Science and Letters, The Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities (Sweden) and The Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala (Sweden). She has published books on Norwegian writers including Henrik Wergeland, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Henrik Ibsen, Kristofer Uppdal, and was the co- editor 1988–2001 of the biennial journal Contemporary Approaches to Ibsen (since 2000 called Ibsen Studies).
