Every day for the last two weeks a beautiful blue bird comes and sits on the window sill next to my desk. He just sits and hops along the window edge as if it is summer time. January and February are known for their dreary weather and long drawn out weeks, but this little bluebird, a harbinger of Spring, keeps my spirits high and feeds my hopes for good things to come . I am accustomed to the red bird that visits and pecks at the window in the summer. This is the first time for the bluebird visitor. Needless to say, I am thrilled to have been selected for his cheery visual message! Yesterday a young high school girl was feeling down and wanted to talk with a counselor. Since no one was available, I invited her into my office to wait, in privacy, until Abby was free. As she walked past my desk, eyes puffy, mouth turned down in a forlorn manner, she spotted my newly arrived guest. In an instant, she replaced her sad look with one of amazement, stated “how cool!” and continued to her chair with a lighter step and demeanor. Of course, what was bothering her was still important but for a while she could think about something more pleasant…and probably felt as I do, a little blessed. Post-holiday let down, winter doldrums, the winter slump…..whatever you choose to call it, for many people, this phenomenon is real. Many of us are sick with the flu or colds. The diminished sunlight affects many in a negative manner. The cold weather creates a hurried pace as we try to stay warm in our daily travels. We really see the effect on our students who are very sensitive to environmental conditions. Techniques we use at school to combat this tendency to be more moody are to 1) acknowledge the effect on our emotions; 2) plan a variety of active and fun opportunities; and 3) keep our own interactions light and pleasant. The intentional management of our time over the next few months can make the transition to the end of the school year more enjoyable for all. We are welcoming several new families this semester. It is always a pleasure to have new students join our school family. Since our families come from near and far, we are open to ideas that will enable us to get more acquainted. Carpool is not the best time to visit, and if your teen drives, then that is not even an option. However, it is beneficial to develop relationships with each other. Other parents are excellent resources and good sounding boards. Not to mention that we attract fun loving families! We have planned a new parent social this month so we can get better acquainted. We have our semester parent social later this month that allows us time to get to know each other, as well. The weekly front page calendar update will provide you with dates and location. We are approaching the celebration of the school’s thirtieth anniversary! Joe and I simply cannot believe it has been three decades since we set up shop in an office park! We have a steady stream of memories with students, families and staff that run rapid loops through our heads and hearts. Some mornings I drive on to campus and feel awed at the surrounding beauty and growth we have experienced. Of course there is always room for improvement and we have decades ahead of us to finish the campus plans. For the next month, I plan to enjoy what we have and with whom we share this lovely space in time.

A Difficult Decision Dear Faculty, Staff and Cottage School Family Members, Toward the end of school, last year, I announced that we were, at long last, going to begin construction of a Multipurpose Athletic Field. We were all very excited about the prospect knowing that the project would bring a much needed capital improvement to our campus. Unfortunately, funding prospects on which we based our plans to move forward did not materialize. After a very careful review of the costs associated with the construction plans, even cutting back on the full scope of the project to provide a Soccer Only venue, we still found that the cost of the project far exceeded our fundraising capacity at this time. We have, therefore, made the decision to temporarily postpone the project as we would not ever jeopardize the financial security of the school mission to embark on a capital improvement project regardless of its importance to the growth of our program. We will revisit this project in the not too distant future when fundraising opportunities once again open up for us to do so. We realize that the Cottage School families were fully behind this project. However, after 30 years of experience, we know what our internal fundraising capacity is, and we simply did not feel we could expand that capacity by the amount required to move forward with this project. We know you share our disappointment with the need to make this decision but also know that you trust it was made in the best interest of the school and our primary mission. Sincerely, Joe Digieso Treasurer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Beacon College to Offer a Dual Credit College Composition Course at The Cottage School in Summer 2015
LEESBURG, FL — Beacon College, the nation’s first accredited college to offer both bachelor’s and associate degrees exclusively for
students with learning disabilities, ADHD and other specific learning differences, will offer “College Composition,” at The Cottage
School, this summer, for Atlanta area students who learn differently.
The three week, non-residential course, begins on June 22nd. The three credit course qualifies for both high school and college credit.
College Composition is typically a first semester college course designed to develop an entering college student’s skills in writing multi-
paragraph essays with emphasis on exposition, including the selection, restriction, organization, and development of topics. Students
also examine selected writing samples as models of form and sources of ideas for
their own writing. Successful completion of the College Composition course prior to
a student entering college can make a critical difference in transitioning a student to
the rigor of college-level writing. The transition to college writing can be especially
difficult for students with learning differences.
The program includes a 3-hour course work session in the morning taught by Beacon
College faculty using multimodal teaching practices. The multimodal teaching
approach is proven to be particularly effective when teaching students with a wide
range of learning differences. In the afternoon, students needing additional
academic support will have the opportunity to work with a skilled Beacon College
writing specialist and/or work on preparing their college essay. It is the expectation that each student will complete the three week pro-
gram with a college essay prepared and ready to include with most college and university admissions applications.
Applicants must be rising seniors or have graduated in spring 2015 and be heading to a college or university in fall 2015.
The cost of the course is $1,750.
For additional information and an application please contact:
Dale Herold, Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management Beacon College 105 East Main Street Leesburg, FL 34748 [email protected] 352-787-0796 www.beaconcollege.edu
Would you like a House Guest…
This summer we have an exciting opportunity to partner with Beacon College for a dual credit college course.
During the three week session, the instructors from Beacon will need a place to stay. They could rent rooms
at the Doubletree Hotel around the corner, but I wonder if any of you have an alternative (warm and friendly)
option for them. They will have their own transportation and be gone during the day (Monday-Friday) while
they teach. If you have some good suggestions that could save them money and create a friendly experience,
please e-mail me at school, [email protected]. Thanks!
