Eviction from illegally occupied lands occur frequently In Mumbai with political motivesost of the slums in Mumbai are illegally occupied and Mgradually became legal habitats. See pans, collector lands, government lands are free passage for migrants and land

sharks. Illegally occupied slums are steadily evicted by land mafias by giving them money or alternate accommodation.

What has happened is that if the slum is right in the heart of the city, it has a lot of value. In fact, Mumbai slums cost billions. This attracts all kinds of vested interests. The politicians promise money to the inhabitants, they get them registered as voters, they raise requests to regularize the ownership of land, which they occupy on humanitarian grounds.

When we talk about better standards of living it includes living in

healthy neighborhoods. Had it been a developed country, they would simply build alternative homes, move out the residents of Dharavi and bulldoze down the area to create a new township on the basis that the housing there does not conform to basic norms of housing laws.

We actually can afford to do that, without considering the billions generated by reclaiming all that real estate, but it will not stop until there are people willing to live in that mess. One day, as people get more educated and are more productive than people who live on casual labor, these slums won't find anyone willing to live there. You will then find no resistance to reform the slums.

Eviction from illegally occupied lands occur frequently

In Mumbai with political motives

Shop No. 17, Hilton Co-op Hsg. Society, Bldg No. K-3, Ram Nagar Rd, near Kalyan Jewellers, Borivali West, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400092.

Land mafia often pays money to agents to move people into government lands and then declare it as residential or commercial land and take ownership.

Things are changing; it needs Indians to be better equipped with productivity so that they do not compromise with such situations.

Experts claim it is a myth that land is not available in Mumbai to house the poor--land is available, but is owned by a powerful elite, which ensures that vacant land is not freed for slum dwellers. The National Commission on Urbanisat ion reported that 91 people in Mumbai owned 55 percent of vacant land. This concentration of ownership, in fact, is a widely known phenomenon, accepted by government officials as well.

It is not that houses are not available in Mumbai, but these are unaffordable to the lower middle class. There are a few developers who control the Mumbai housing sector. We need to break this jinx and deregulate the housing sector.

In the mid-2016, property prices in Mumbai's business districts reached record levels, becoming, for a brief period in 2020, the most expensive real estate in the world is built in south Mumbai. Unleashed by a series of nat ional- level indust r ia l and monetary reforms, demand for residential and commercial property intensified among both local investors and global speculators.

Yet the increased demand was met with constrained supply — due both to geographic limitations (Mumbai is an island city with few transits linkages to the mainland) and a

purchased the property from a small-scale businessman who had been illegally squatting on the public land. The D-Company then acquired the requisite building permits from the municipal building department, with the payment of hefty bribes, and constructed the buildings with few obstacles.

As more information about the D-company's involvement in the shopping centre project surfaced, it became apparent that the mafia the organization had been running a highly profitable property development business since the mid-1990s, constructing retail and residential buildings in other parts of Mumbai, as well as in Dubai and Karachi. Further investigation revealed that the D-Company was not the only criminal organization involved in such activities at the time, but that all of the city's major organized crime groups had involved themselves in real estate and property development.

Poised on the northern edge of South Mumbai is a piece of real estate developers who would love to get their hands on. Rubbing shoulders with upmarket Bandra, Dharavi is known as Asia's largest slum, but it's actually much more than that--it's a settlement in which people live and work, producing a wide array of goods and services. The government's plan to 'redevelop' Dharavi is threatening a huge number of livelihoods.

Supported by an illicit nexus of politicians, bureaucrats and the police, the mafia has emerged as a central figure in Mumbai's land development politics. The structural shifts that facilitated the criminalization of land development and the implications of mafia involvement in local politics is visible here.

regulatory context posing restrictions or disincentives on certain types of development — prices rose dramatically if we look at the projects like Nijman, 2000; 2002; Bertaud, 2002). Responding to these market pressures, the local state began making certain highly valued lands available for development through a series of industrial land conversions, slum clearance schemes, and the de-reservation of certain public lands.

Construction activities in Mumbai's island city and northern suburbs expanded, further bolstered by the growth of the finance industry, access to new sources of capital, and both funding and pressure from multilateral aid agencies. Although activity slowed somewhat after the mid-1990s peak when some speculators left and real estate prices began to ‘correct’, both prices and demand have remained high and property development has emerged as one of India's and Mumbai's fastest-growing industries.

With construction crews becoming a common sight throughout the city in the late 1990s, two new shopping centres then drew little attention when constructed in the Crawford Market area of South Mumbai, opposite the city's police headquarters. The Sara and Sahara Shopping Centres opened in 2000, joining a myriad of new shopping centres and retail establishments that had appeared in the area in the previous five years.

It was soon learnet that the Sara and Sahara Shopping Centres had been built illegally by the D-Company, the city's largest and most notorious mafia organization, on land belonging to the state government's public works department.

As the details of the case came to light in mid-2003, it was learned that representatives of the D-Company had

The couple made bogusly papers to show that the land belonged to their family. Police and MTDC are investigating the matter; meanwhile obtaining property search records from the office of the sub-registrar of assurances is a must if you are a buyer or seller.

We had peace of land at Gorai allotted by the Collector. We have found out there are some encroachments happening there. We got a Complaint from Dashrath Chavan that some proxy specimen pretending to be this landowner is dealing in business to sell this property. We have then filed an FIR through Gorai Police Station. The Cops are investigating the matter”, further added Sanjay Dhekane.

A buyer has to give public notice in 2 leading newspapers, one in English and the other in the local language, giving 14 days time to file written objections along with documentary evidence subtending ownership rights of the property, none of the above was taken into consideration by the seller or buyer.

“The one who is fooled should make an appeal in court. At first he should register a petition on the injustice he has experienced”, said Raja Shirsat, Real Estate Broker.

“We haven’t got any such Information. On this issue and nobody or no one will be able to say anything on this matter. The ITDC has not got any such information on this”, said Ankush, Chief Vigilant Officer (Dept) of ITDC

Letters to the

editorHijacking Manchester Test in

favour of IPL was utterly disgusting for which Team India

should be penalised by ICC!It was utterly disgusting on the

part of Indian players & our cricket Board to hijack the all important Manchester Test Match in favour of IPL as there was very little gap between the end of the Test & restart of IPL in Dubai. Test extending to the reserve day could have disturbed IPL schedule going by quarantine rules which was the reason why our players refused to play the Test which one thought was unprofessional attitude by Team India.

England bowed down due to money power as most cricket sponsorship comes from India but the entire episode left a bad taste for the future of Test cricket as the series was evenly contested & interesting. ICC the governing body of international cricket should not tolerate such nonsense & should penalise Team India for refusing to play the Test when not a single player had Tested positive for COVID.

IPL may be interesting but damaging to the future of cricket as it basically is 'Masala' cricket that encourages illegal betting!

Welcome to note that yet other foreign car-manufacturing

company Ford compelled to discontinue car-production in India due to mounting losses

It is welcome to note that US giant Ford compelled to discontinue manufacture of cars in India due to mounting losses. Time is the biggest healer when this Bill Ford in the year 1990 insulted Ratan Tata in a business deal. The tables turned nine years later in the year 1999, the clock turned a full circle and Tata took his sweet revenge on Ford. The salt-to-software conglomerate humbled Ford which was then on the verge of bankruptcy after the 2008 global financial meltdown by taking over the iconic Jaguar- Land Rover brands for 2.3 billion dollars.

It is beyond understanding why and how authorities and certain individuals prefer promoting car-manufacture in India as if cars are basic necessities rather than luxury. Policy should be such that all such steps may be taken to discourage manufacture of costly cars with ex-

showroom price above rupees ten lakhs in country. GST along with cess, road-tax and all other levies may be doubled on costly cars than cars with ex-showroom price less than rupees ten lakhs. There should be a complete ban on loans for cars having ex-showrooms price above rupees ten lakhs. Diesel engines must not be allowed in cars of any category. With petrol and diesel having procurement-price almost same, diesel is deliberately priced lower because it is used for public transport and goods-carriers. It is misuse of lower-priced diesel to allow it to be used for costly cars.

Car-manufacturers then will be compelled to compete giving better cars in economy range apart from introducing much-needed air-conditioned three-wheelers as said to be used by Mexican ambassador in India. Costlier cars are nothing but status-symbol, and status-conscious persons must be paying heavily for their show of status in society.

Divine Consciousness Today 'eco-friendly' Ganesh Idols

are made from paper mache. This is not only against Scriptures but also dangerous to the environment because paper mache absorbs

oxygen from water resulting in production of methane, a poisonous gas. Sculpting Idols from clay as prescribed by the Scriptures is truly environment friendly. Main objective of worshipping Shri Ganesh Idol is that the family derives the Ganesh Principle from it. This benefit cannot be derived from an Idol made from plaster of paris. If you are buying an Idol made from plaster of paris Idol simply because it is cheaper, then buy a smaller clay Idol but do not perform action against Dharma by buying a plaster of paris Idol. A Ganesh Idol is worshipped at home to increase spiritual emotion and devotion, to absorb Divine Consciousness etc. One should never compromise with the principles laid down by the Scriptures

“n September 6th this year, Oone of my family members residing in Dombivili was

carried to hospital in a serious condition.

I went to the ticket booking counter at Sion (since I am residing there) and requested the clerk at the booking counter to give me a single journey ticket to Dombivili, as my going to Dombivili was very urgent. I even showed the clerk at the booking counter my vaccination certificate of having taken two doses of the Covishield vaccine. But the clerk would not listen. He was very rude and told me that he does not care if my family member dies but would not give me the ticket. He wanted me to remove a monthly pass which I didn't want to because I just wanted to go to Dombivili once to see my family member. When I told him that I did not want a monthly pass but only want a single journey ticket, he would not listen. He said that they have been given instructions by the CM of Maharashtra, Shri Uddhav Thackeray not to issue single journey tickets to

gets three full meals a day to eat and roams about in his air-conditioned car.

I would like to add that we Christians of Mumbai have decided not to vote for the Shiv Sena in the forthcoming elections because like the BJP, Uday Thackeray too has harassed us a lot after he came to power by closing our churches and not allowing us to celebrate our festivals like Christmas, Easter and Bandra Feast. If we raise our voices, he puts us behind bars. For our weddings, he has limited the crowd to only 50 people and for our funerals, he has limited the mourners to only 20 people. This is ridiculous which shows that he has a hatred for the Catholic/Christian community.

In February and March 2021 when churches were opened for a month and only 50 people were allowed inside the church to celebrate Mass, the police would stand outside every church counting the number of people entering the church. If any parishioner would stand outside the church, their pictures were clicked and they had to face the wrath.

Mumbai Top Cop orders 'Nirbhaya squad' ateach police station, intensified patrolling

s p e c i a l s q u a d Aconsisting of women officials should be set

up at every police station and patrolling should be intensified in areas where the occurrence of crime against women is more l i k e l y, M u m b a i p o l i c e commissioner Hemant Nagrale said in a circular issued on Tuesday.

The instructions came in the aftermath of the brutal rape and murder of a woman in suburban Sakinaka last week, which bore some similarity to the 2012 `Nirbhaya' gang-rape case of Delhi.

At every police station, there will be a `Nirbhaya Squad' or special women's safety cell, the commissioner said. It will consist of a woman assistant inspector or sub-inspector, a woman constable, a male constable and a driver.

The ̀Mobile-5' vehicle of each police station will be assigned to this squad. Each station has a fixed number of `Mobile' patroll ing vehicles at its

disposal.The Nirbhaya squads will

undergo two-day training. Among other things they will be trained to collect intelligence from areas where girls' hostels, children's shelter homes and orphanages are located.

Under an initiative named as 'Saksham', police will offer counseling to the victims of sexual harassment/ assault. The police stations will also identify areas/places under their jurisdiction where crime against women is more prevalent. Isolated spots near slums, gardens, schools, colleges, theaters and malls can be added to this list. Once such places are identified, patrolling

routes should be planned accordingly, the circular said.

Police should also help women who are commuting alone on roads at late hours and arrange vehicle to take such a woman to her destination if she requests, the commissioner said.

A list of senior citizen women living in the area should be made and police should visit them during patrolling to hear their grievances, the circular said. The helpline number ̀ 103' meant for women in distress should be publicized properly, it said.

There should also be a `Nirbhaya complaint box' at every school, college and hostel where girls or women can put in their complaints.

Information about persons living in the area who have been named as accused in cases of crime against women in the last five years should be recorded in a separate register, and such persons should be kept under watch, the top cop instructed.

Raut questions Centre about Pegasus project issue

aharashtra MP and MShiv Sena leader S a n j a y R a u t o n

Tuesday asked the Centre how the Pegasus case could be a national security issue when journalists, officials and public representatives were kept under scrutiny.

"Through the Pegasus app, nationals' journalists, defence officers, state leaders, Chief Ministers, MPs and people like us were under observation, then how will it be beneficial for the nation's security?" Raut asked.

"Lok Sabha and Rajya sabha could not make progress on the Pegasus issue during the monsoon session. If the Central government informs us about the national security, then the people will gain knowledge, If there is no discussion upon the

topic then what national security are we talking about? We will again have a discussion on the same issue," Raut said.

Amid the continuous ruckus created by the Opposition over the 'Pegasus Project' issue, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha faced repeated adjournments during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

After the rape cases from the state, Raut said, "Maharashtra h a s n e v e r m a d e a n y compromise regarding the safety of women. This is the tradition of Maharashtra. Since the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, we have kept the respect and dignity of women, s e c u r i t y o f w o m e n i n M a h a r a s h t r a , a n d t h i s Thackeray government is more sensitive in that it is known to all."

T h e Amendment Bill was passed on voice out and the majorates were I (Yes) in the favor of imposing the section. Tourism has been a turn key for Rajasthan as the Rajputana havelis that turned into paradise hotels and lawns are heritage banquets now. As per the new section; the offence will be cognizable and bailable. If the offence in sub-section 3 of section 13 it will be non-bailable in sub-section 4 of

section 13. Minister of State for Tourism Govind Singh Dotasra said in the House that the legislation was brought in 2010 to boost tourism and prevent mis behavior with tourists and pilgrims. Since it was not mentioned whether the offence was bailable or nonbailable and therefore it had to be amended. Dotas ra addres s ing the legislation said that 'Police stations in Jaipur and Udaipur were set up by the state government to check touting and cases that were filed in 2016 and challans submitted. But the accused went to the High Court which in January 2017 quashed a FIR on the grounds that the offences were not specifically provided in the Act as cognizable. Hence the

amendments have been made' he said.

O n t h e d e v e l o p m e n t s e c re t a r y o f R a j a s t h a n Association of Tour Operators, Sanjay Kaushik welcomingly said strict action against touts called as lapkas in local parlance is necessary to make the tourists feel safe. "Touting activities not only disturb tourists but also tarnish the image of the whole industry. The problem of lapkas is mainly in big cities like Jaipur and Udaipur". Kaushik further said that "The lapkas pose as guides mislead and force tourists to shop in order to get a commission and extort money from them. They also harass the them". Sunita Sharma a "national level tourist guide and executive member of the Tourist Federation of India said touts are not regulated by the gove r nment and hence catching them is very difficult. Such elements mislead tourists; extort money from them and it creates a very bad impression. Since they are not regulated by the government, catching them becomes difficult if they commit fraud. Hence, strict action against them is necessary" she added.

US President Biden to host in-person Quad Summit on Sept 24, PM Modi to attend

S President Joe Biden Uwould host the first-ever in-person Quad

summit on September 24 which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia and Japanese premier Yoshihide Suga, the White House announced on Monday (local time).

The four leaders would discuss deepening their ties and a d v a n c i n g p r a c t i c a l cooperation on areas like

c o m b a t t i n g C O V I D - 1 9 , addressing the climate crisis and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific, the White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

In March, President Biden hosted the first-ever summit of the Quad leaders in the virtual format that vowed to strive for an Indo-Pacific region that is free, open, inclusive, anchored by democratic values, and unconstrained by coercion, sending a subtle message to China.

“President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will host the first-ever Quad Leaders Summit at the White House on September 24. President Biden is looking forward to welcoming to the White House Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan,” Psaki said.

T h e B i d e n - H a r r i s administration has made elevating the Quad a priority, as seen through the first-ever Quad Leaders-level engagement in March, which was virtual, and now this Summit, which will be in-person, she said.

“Hosting the leaders of the Quad demonstrates the Biden-Harris administration's priority of engaging in the Indo-Pacific, i n c l ud ing th rough new multilateral configurations to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” she said.

According to the White House, the Quad Leaders will be focused on deepening their ties and advancing pract ica l cooperation on areas such as c o m b a t t i n g C O V I D - 1 9 , addressing the climate crisis, partner ing on emerging technologies and cyberspace and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Pakistan involved in harbouring Taliban, Haqqanis: US Secretary of State Blinken

S Secretary of State UAntony Blinken called on Monday (local time)

on Pakistan to deny legitimacy to the Taliban unless they meet i n t e r n a t i o n a l d e m a n d s , acknowledging concerns that Islamabad has supported militants from Afghanistan.

Testifying before Congress on t h e Ta l i b a n v i c t o r y i n Afghanistan, Blinken heard from lawmakers across party lines who pushed for a harder line on Pakistan, an uneasy partner of Washington over the 20-year war.

"What we have to look at is an insistence that every country, to include Pakistan, make good

on the expectations that the international community has of what is required of a Taliban-led government if it's to receive any legitimacy of any kind or any support," Blinken told the H o u s e F o r e i g n A f f a i r s Committee.

He said the priorities included ensuring the Taliban let out people who want to leave Afghanistan and respect the rights of women, girls and minorities, as well as adhere to promises that the country not again become "a haven for outward-directed terror."

“So Pakistan needs to line up with a broad majority of the international community in working toward those ends and i n u p h o l d i n g t h o s e expectations," Blinken said.

Bl inken said Pakistan's policies have been "on many occasions detrimental to our interests, on other occasions in support of those interests."

Thousands protest against Talibanin Kandahar over evictions

housands of Afghans Tprotested against the Taliban in the southern

city of Kandahar on Tuesday, a c co rd i ng t o a f o rme r government official and local televis ion footage, after residents were asked to vacate a residential army colony.

Protesters gathered in front of the governor's house in Kandahar after around 3,000 families were asked to leave the colony, according to the former government official who witnessed the crowds.

Footage from local media showed crowds of people blocking a road in the city. The affected area is predominantly occupied by the families of retired army generals and other members of the Afghan security forces.

The families, some of whom had lived in the district for almost 30 years, had been given three days to vacate, the official, who had spoken to

some of those affected, said. Taliban spokesmen did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the evictions.

Sporadic protests against the Taliban, who swept to power in Afghanistan with the capture of Kabul almost a month ago, have ended in occasionally deadly clashes, although there were no confirmed reports of violence on Tuesday. Taliban leaders have vowed to investigate any instances of abuse, but have ordered d e m o n s t r a t o r s t o s e e k permission before holding protests.

Syria hails joint anti-terror campaign with Russia for 6 years

yrian President Bashar al-SAssad on Tuesday hailed his country's six-year joint

anti-terror campaign with Russia during a meeting with h i s Russ ian counterpar t Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital Moscow, according to the Syrian presidential media office.

In the video footage of the meeting released by the office, Assad started his speech by hailing the Syrian-Russian efforts to fight terror groups in Syria.

"I am happy to meet today in Moscow as the six years have passed since the joint operation

against terror started, during which both the Syrian and Russian armies made major achievements not only about liberating lands or returning refugees to their areas but through protecting other people across the world because terrorism crosses borders," he said.

The president noted that his visit to Moscow is an important opportunity to discuss two issues -- fighting terrorism and the political process, adding that his government insists on moving forward with fighting terrorism in parallel with the political process.

Japan, US, S. Korea call on N. Korea to return to arms talksenior diplomats from SJapan, the United States and South Korea on

Tuesday called on North Korea to return to talks over its missile and nuclear development, a day after Pyongyang announced it successfully tested new long-r a n g e c r u i s e m i s s i l e s , suggesting advancement of its military capabilities.

The three-way meeting in Tokyo included US Special Representative for North Korea Policy Sung Kim, South Korea's Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and

Security Affairs Noh Kyu-duk and Japan's Director-General for Asian and Oceanian affairs Takehiro Funakoshi.

US envoy Kim said the three countr ies were open to diplomacy with the North “as we see to make tangible progress that increases the security of the United States and our allies.'' Kim called on North Korea to “respond positively to our multiple offers to meet without preconditions”.

Washington and its allies will continue to work to fully implement all United Nations

Security Council resolutions in addressing North Korea's missile development, he added.

On Monday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported that the new missiles showed they can hit targets 1,500 km (930 miles) away.

The North hailed its new

missiles as a “strategic weapon o f g rea t s i gn i f i c ance ,” suggesting that they were developed with the intent to arm them with nuc lear warheads. North Korea says it needs nuclear weapons in order to deter what it claims is hostility from Washington and Seoul.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was also set to arrive in Seoul on Tuesday for talks with South Korean officials over bilateral relations and the freeze in nuclear diplomacy with North Korea.

Wang is scheduled to meet with South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong on Wednesday. Chung is expected seek a more active role from Beijing, Pyongyang's main ally and economic lifeline, in persuading the North to return to the negotiation table.

Japanese officials and some experts said North Korea's weekend missile test-firing was a “new threat” to the region.

Japan and South Korea are separate key allies for the US presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Swami Vivekananda in Parliament of the World's Religions

n the history in whichever Icountry missionaries went to spread Christianity and,

as also, to pave the way for their ruling overlords at home intending to lay control over its [foreign land] power and its resources, for that they[missionaries] and a section of scholars inspired by them invented a theory which world knows as “White man's burden theory”. They had India also in this 'mission' of their, and indulged in establishing in the eyes of world that this country is half-civilized, a country of snake charmers; its scriptures are nothing but a bundle of unfounded rituals and of falsehood; and, as also, how many be its religious heads they all are many miles away from what is called wisdom. And therefore, they preached, God laid responsibility upon them to make it civilized, to redeem it from this state of self-ignorance. But fortunately, at the same time there grew the trend among a section of scholars and philosophers of Europe and America to study Hinduism with fair mind. From the conclusions drawn from the study a process of exposing the falsehood of missionaries began to take shape. See, - 'Vedas reveal every aspect of human-life such as— culture, religion, moral-code, surgery, medicines, music, astronomy, environment and architect etc.'-Sir William Jones. Similar views were held by the great thinkers like Arthur Shopenhower, Ralphwaldo Emerson, Wilhelm Von Humboldt and such others. But since their voices did not come from particular platform at particular event of recognition, they could not become the voice of the world.

To India this opportunity came at that time in 11 September, 1893 when in Chicago held Parliament of the World's Religions, in which came together the greatest of proponents of different religions world over in order to present the tenets of their respective religions. This event proved to be one of transforming the views regarding India, its antiquity, its ancestors, its religion in the eyes of the people inside, as well as, outside the country. By joining the event one that succeeded in doing all by alone this seemingly

impossible task, he was none other than Swami Vivekananda. In participating in the religious-parliament Vivekananda saw many missions to be fulfilled at one place and all at one time. Actually, this was the time when having studied in Church sponsored mission schools and colleges Indian youths began to feel low about everything concerning 'self'. In the words of Swami Vivekananda- “When child is sent to school the first thing, he learns that his father is fool; second, his grandfather crazy; third, his all-religious master's fraud, and fourth that all of his scriptures are false and useless.” These were the youths who were not ready to accept anything unless it was delivered by an Englishman. And, most of all, no matter the declared purpose of the event at

Chicago had been of bringing harmony among different religious faiths but Christian church was looking this as an opportunity when once knowing the tenets of Christianity the followers of all the faiths would admit the supremacy of it [Christianity] and grow excited to come under it['The Parliament of Religions'-Mary Louise Burke(Sister Gargi)]. For they were of belief that it was only due to their ignorance of Christianity that the people of the world forgetfully embraced to their chests their respective faiths.

Against the backdrop of this when Swamiji attained the Religious-parliament he had to wait to the last to deliver his speech. But when he began to speak, before the splendour of his discourse composed of all-inclusive Hindu philosophy none could save from its spell.

Then 10-12 speeches that he gave in later days they were kept at last only so that the audiences could be made to stay in the auditorium till the end of the programme to hear him. Seeing this many of the Newspapers then filled with his praise. The New York herald wrote- “In religious parliament the greatest personality is Vivekananda. After hearing his discourse all of a sudden a question rises how foolish is the idea to send religious missionaries to reform such country of wisdom.” World that had got to be habitual of seeing bloodshed in the name of crusade and jihad to that the discourse of Vivekananda composed of Gita's philosophy of religious co-existence and mutual harmony were beyond imagination- “Whoever comes to me- no matter from which of the ways- I get to meet him.” Explaining this message of Gita, when Vivekananda said that Hindus not only believe in tolerance but hold every religion true, for the audiences this was something came to them from alien world.

Vivekananda went only to attend the Parliament of Religions but the response that he received there made him change his plan of returning India soon. In the words of Rashtrkavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar- “Enthused with

Religious-parliament, Swamiji stayed for three years in Europe and England, and living there spread the essence of Hinduism all over Europe and America. It was difficult to convince Hindu intellectuals at home, who were deluded with learning English, but when they saw the men and women of Europe and America themselves being turned the disciples of Swamiji and got to engage in the service of Hindutva, their minds came to sense. Thus, the storm in the form of English language, Christianity and European intellectualism that brewed up to swallow Hindutva went back colliding with Himalaya-like gigantic tree of Vivekananda.” ['Sanskriti ke chaar adhayay'- Ramdhari Singh Dinkar]

The backbone of any nationthBorn on 15 September 1860, Dr. Vishveshvaraiya went to

become India's most prolific civil engineer, dam & bridge builder, economist, statesman and can be counted among

the last century's foremost nation-builders.

n year 1968, Government Iof India has declared 15th September as “Engineers

Day” as a tribute to the greatest Engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Vishveshvaraiya. Born on 15th September 1860, Dr. Vishveshvaraiya went to become India's most prolific civil engineer, dam & bridge builder, economist, statesman and can be counted among the last century's foremost nation-builders. Nation as well as society recalls the priceless and irreplaceable contribution of their engineers in nation building.

The history of engineers is as old as civilisation. As civilisation developed people began reshaping their environment with villages, farms, watersheds, roads, ships and eventually towns. With each advancement came new challenges that required more complex and creative solutions, which were solved by experiments as well as experience. With the passage of time, there has been considerable overhauling in the system. The advent of computer & software has completely changed the scenario in infrastructure sector. Quality in construction, planning, scheduling, organising, co-ordinating, controlling, management etc has been improved and elapsed time minimised.

In religious scripture, Bhagwan Vishwakarma has been enshrined as an engineer & architect of the Devlok. In Treta Yug, during departure of Shri Ram to Sri Lanka, two warriors of the Vanar Sena - Nal and Neel

have showed their engineering expertise by constructing stone bridge “Shri Ram Setu” across the ocean between present day Dhanushkodi in Rameshwaram (Bharat) & Mannar (Sri Lanka). The bridge, having approximately 30-35 Km length & 3 Km width, is the unique model of ancient engineering dexterity.

Engineers play a very important role in every walk of life. They are technically skilled professionals, who are responsible for solving problems through the use of machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. They convert knowledge of basic sciences into products. Their main focus is on making things work efficiently and effectively by applying the theories and principles of sciences and mathematics to research, and develop economic solutions to technical problems. The engineer differs from scientist by the nature of their training. While the scientists try to explore the natural world and discover new knowledge about the universe and how it works, engineers apply that knowledge to solve real problems, often with an eye toward improving cost and efficiency.

Their works are the link between the perceived social needs and economic applications. They are the bridge between science and art. Engineers are the backbone of nation building and the purpose of engineering is to innovate, design, create and maintain products, system and

equipment for the benefit and wellbeing of humans. They help improve living conditions for the common people. If a country fails to realise the role of engineers in her nation building and the engineers are leaving for better opportunities abroad, then the country will continue to experience collapsed buildings and bridges, substandard products, failed roads, communication failures, environmental hazards, epileptic power supply etc.

Engineers contribute to the nation's technological & industrial progress. As nations in the world are undergoing reformation and the economy is getting more modernised, consumption patterns have expanded and demand is constantly on the increase. There is therefore a growing consciousness of quality control at every level of production.

The engineers have to realise their responsibility and play an effective role in tackling today's complex issues in the nation building. To build a nation is to make it habitable for the citizens by providing social amenities, infrastructural facilities, job creation and security and many more; the engineers therefore have a very important role to play. Thus, they are duty bound to design products, machineries and plants to manufacture these products, and systems to ensure quality and efficiency. They are to design, plan and supervise construction of buildings, and ensure their safety and stability against hazards;

design highways, bridges, railways and transit systems, dams, irrigation canals, power systems, ports, harbours as well as off-shore structures.

Engineers should equally know that it is their duty to develop and implement improved ways to extract, process and use raw materials; develop new raw materials that can improve product performance and take advantage of advances in technology to harness the power of the sun, the gas, the earth, atoms and electricity to supply the nation's power needs; analyse the impact of the products they develop or systems they design on the environment and the people; design ways of managing the nation's waste, converting or recycling them to useful products. Parts of their functions also include determining the cause of component failures, estimating the time and cost of completing new projects as well as maintaining the existing ones.

Engineers are pivotal not only in infrastructure, but can act a catalyst in the field of trade and commerce too. In sales and management, an

engineering background enables one to discuss the technical aspects of projects/products and assist in the planning, installation and product use. With such a vast and varied nature of their job, the engineers are really the foundation stone of a nation's building and their role cannot be neglected in a nation's all round progress. The engineers on their part should be proud of what they do and contribute effectively towards the growth of their country and the world at

large.

Olivia Rodrigo makesher Met Gala debut

in a sheer lace bodysuit

American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo earned her

crown as the breakout musician of 2021, and now she's also on her way to becoming a fashion icon. For her Met Gala debut, the 18-year-old star wore a black sheer lace Saint Laurent bodysuit with feather detailing. The outfit was inspired by her love for punk rock music.

"I think Saint Laurent does a great job of making punk rock feminine, so that is what I was going for," Rodrigo told Vogue on the red carpet, according to People magazine. "I feel so grateful to be here all together. It is such a blessing," the singer continued.

Rodrigo was one of many

first-timers at this year's Met Gala, including co-chair Amanda Gorman and social media stars Addison Rae, Emma Chamberlain, and Madison Beer, to name a few. The annual fashion event was postponed indefinitely in 2020, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but the gala is back this year with the theme of 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'.

To maintain safety amid the rising Delta variant COVID-19 cases, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue had enforced a vaccination mandate and mask requirement. Rihanna will host the event's official afterparty, teaming with hospitality giant Richie Akiva to throw the Met Ball's private post-gala bash.

Pankaj Tripathi

Actor Pankaj Tripathi says that acting is

a means to renew himself which enables him to create characters with utmost authenticity.

Pankaj made his debut with a minor role in the film 'Run' in 2004 but it was Anurag Kashyap's 'Gangs of Wasseypur' that put the spotlight on him.

Over the years, his characters have remained etched in the minds such as the doting and progressive father in 'Gunjan Saxena' and 'Bareilly Ki Barfi', the real estate tycoon in 'Gurgaon', the menacing Kaleen Bhaiya in 'Mirzapur', 'Stree' or a CRPF officer in 'Newton'.

He says: “Acting for me is not only a medium to earn fame and money but through acting, I explore my inner being and reinvent myself.”

Pankaj added that acting tends to revitalise his energy and senses of touch.

He said: “Acting tends to revitalize my energy and senses of touch, feel, and taste, which ultimately enables me to perform my art with sincerity and honesty.”

Kacey Musgraves had 'guided magicmushrooms' trip to deal with divorce

inger Kacey Musgraves Swent on a seven-hour guided magic mushrooms

trip to help process the end of her marriage and find a positive way to use her "trauma and pain".

The 'Rainbow' singer was keen to process the fallout of her divorce from Ruston Kelly and to "transform (her) trauma and pain into something else" so she embarked on "plant therapy", which involved taking the hallucinogens under supervision.

She said: "I did it with a doctor friend here and her husband. It's called plant therapy.

"It's been looked at in a lot of areas for help with depression, anxiety, addiction, so many things."

"Basically, some neuroscientists (from Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University) have created a playlist that's music from all over the world, put together to guide you, in that state of mind, through different emotions, feeling memories, whatever."

She added: "We have these neural pathways that we have worn into our brain, kind of like trails in the forest, and what these plants do is

basically dump six feet of snow on those pathways and allow you to form new neural connections, to change your brain, change your habits.

“Through the experience, I was blindfolded, and on a comfortable couch with a soft blanket, this music was playing and all the things I was seeing were in my mind's eye. The music was painting this whole story, pulling from childhood memories, experiences, thoughts."

Musgraves was feeling every pluck of a string in her body.

She said the experience was a "big part" of creating her new album, 'Star-Crossed', reports a entertainment portal.

Musgraves told a leading magazine: "The day after, you're encouraged to journal and relisten to the playlist, triggering some of the emotions that you felt then.

"So that's what I was doing the day after, when the word 'Star-Crossed' popped into my mind as a title, and the concept of a modern tragedy, the acts, the exposition, the climax and the downfall, then the resolution.

“I don't want it to necessarily speak for my brand as a whole, but it was a big part of this process."

Abhishek Banerjee shares experience of acting with a mannequin

ctor Abhishek Banerjee, Awho has acted with a mannequin in an entire

segment of the upcoming anthology 'Ankahi Kahaniya', says he never felt it was a lifeless object and not his real co-star.

Sharing his experience, Abhishek said in a conversation with a leading news agency: "I never felt that it (mannequin) is lifeless. I always felt that I could see her smile. I do not know how this was possible and I don't have an answer to that. I feel it was the beauty of the story and the credit for this goes to the writers."

"I think somewhere we all need that one friend, one company, who we can, once we come home from work, just talk to. We can share our sorrows with them and the script made me feel that with Pari it was possible.

"Pari was my friend, she was made for my character but even today I consider her my friend. Her smile will stay with me forever. Usually, actors take the energy from co-actors, we listen to each other's dialogues and

react to each other's emotions."I was wondering how I

would be able to react to a lifeless object, but it did not feel like that for a second when we started off. It was quite a unique experience," Abhishek said.

The segment is directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. 'Ankahi Kahaniya', produced by RSVP Movies, consists of three stories directed by three directors. The others are Abhishek Chaubey and Saket Chaudhary.
