MIDSHIPMAN RETIRED Midshipman (Unbridled=s Song--Fleet Lady, by Avenue of Flags), the champion two-year-old of 2008 after taking the GI Del Mar Futurity and GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile, has been retired and will stand at Darley in America in 2011. AMidshipman defeated the best of his generation while proving himself on both dirt and synthetic sur- faces,@ said Oliver Tait, Darley's chief operating officer. AWe couldn't be more excited to have a champion two-year-old with his kind of looks and pedigree joining our roster in 2011.@ Bred by Stonerside Stable, Midship- man broke his maiden at first asking at Del Mar and came back to take the GI Del Mar Futurity by a nose. A three-quarter length runner-up to Street Hero (Street Cry {Ire}) in the GI Norfolk S., he was acquired by Darley when they bought the Stonerside as- sets in the fall of 2008, and carried the maroon and white silks to victory in the Breeders= Cup. The chest- nut captured an optional claimer at Belmont Park and was a close-up third in the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile during an abbreviated sophomore season, and closed out his career with a Meydan conditions win this Febru- ary. He retires with a record of 8-5-1-1 and earnings of $1,584,600. AWe look forward to showing Midshipman and fellow new recruit for 2011, Desert Party (Street Cry {Ire}), to breeders during Keeneland September and in the months to come,@ Tait added. Sixth in his career bow at Hollywood May 9, the bay--who is campaigned by Dr. John Waken--won his next two starts at the Inglewood oval, including the six-furlong GIII Hollywood Juvenile Champion- ship July 5. Most recently, the David Hofmans-trained colt marked his debut at Del Mar with a front-running victory in the GII Best Pal S. Aug. 8., and will try to extend his speed an extra sixteenth of a mile this time. AHe found himself on the lead by default, because of the lack of speed in the race,@ said Hofmans regarding the colt=s Best Pal score. AHe=ll be able to lay off the lead this time and track the leaders, and then make his run.@ Iggy Puglisi, who accompanies the juvenile in the morn- ing, added, AHe shows in his works that he=ll be able to stay off the pace and be comfortable. RAIN HITS THE CURRAGH Ground conditions for Saturday's G1 Boylesports.comVincent O'Brien National S. look set to be on the test-ing side after significant rain fell on The Curragh yester-day. Officially, the going was described as yielding onthe round course and good-to- yielding in the home stretch, withmore rain due in Kildare. "We've hada mixed day, with sun, wind andsome showers," Course ManagerPaul Hensey told Racing Post. "Thatis pretty much how it is forecast forthe rest of the week, too. There willbe good drying spells, but showersprobably every day, too.@

AIt is difficult to predict what the ground will be like.It might be something similar to how it is now."Ballydoyle's running plans could depend on the likelysurface, with Zoffany (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) already provenon yielding going when capturing the G3 Tyros S. atLeopardstown July 22 and G1 Phoenix S. at TheCurragh Aug. 8. Whether Johnny Murtagh will resumehis partnership with Michael Tabor's colorbearer de-pends on plans at Doncaster, as the St Leger clasheswith this card. Four of the other entries fromBallydoyle--the Phoenix S. fourth Emperor Hadrian (Ire)(Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), G2 Futurity S. fourth HighRuler (Mr. Greeley), G3 Acomb S. fourth Lake Ontario(Johannesburg) and the G2 Railway S. runner-up Sam-uel Morse (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire})--are also engagedin that track's G2 Champagne S. To the Editor: Racing fans throughout western New York lost agood friend and fine journalist with the death of BobSummers over the weekend. A financial reporter when Ifirst met him in 1978, he followed his heart to sportswriting and editing generally, and racing coverage andcommentary in particular. I could see it coming 30years ago when our conversations about the state ofthe banking business turned to horses once he learnedthat Jane and I were breeding and racing Thorough-breds. Ten years later, when our son, Rick, went out onhis own as a trainer, Bob and I had regular reunions atSaratoga. The opportunity to come out early in themorning and get up close and personal with AffirmedSuccess and others made his day. Bob=s regular column as AThe Happy Handicapper@was a unique mix of wit and wisdom and it had a richlydeserved following among fans of Thoroughbreds andStandardbreds alike. Our sport has lost one of its greatboosters, and journalism has lost one of its tried andtrue practitioners. To Bob=s family and many friends goour most sincere condolences.

SECOND-WEEK SIRES After the first week of the Keeneland September saleends Friday, Sept. 17, there will still be eight days ofselling and around 3,300 yearlings left to sell, beginningSunday, Sept. 19. As with the first week, though at alower level, once again the keyword will not be >profit-ability= but >survival.= The lethal combination of highstud fees and low prices--often half of what the samesires and pedigrees were bringing when these yearlingswere conceived--means cash flow is just as importantfor the lower two-thirds as it is for the upper third, which sells next week. No fewer than 284 individual stallions have yearlingscatalogued in Books 3-6, of which 31 sires have 30 ormore yearlings catalogued, totaling 1,141 among them, roughly a third of the yearlings catalogued for weektwo. These days, proven is better, and unproven issuddenly unfashionable, but at the beginning of 2008the reverse was true, so it=s no great surprise that 11 ofthe 31 sires with 30 or more catalogued are first-cropyearling sires, while another six have their first two-year-olds; so 17 of these 31 sires have no runners, orjust two-year-olds. The overall leader in number of yearlings cataloguedin Books 3-6 is Lane=s End=s After Market (49), byStorm Cat out of $1.6 million-earner Tranquility Lake.He won six graded races on the grass from nine to 11furlongs, including wins in the GI Eddie Read H. (9f)and the Charles Whittingham H. (10f). He=s a fullbrother to Grade II winner Courageous Cat, who wasalso second in last year=s GI Breeders= Cup Mile; andhe=s also a full brother to the $9.7-million yearling Jalil, who won a Group 2 in the UAE, and the dam is ahalf-sister to the successful California sire, Benchmark. Moreover, as Tranquility Lake is by Rahy, After Marketis bred on the exact cross as Giant=s Causeway; be-tween that and his good grass form, he should appealto any European buyers who still come to town, as wellas to Americans who remember him as a top-classcompetitor.1 Ashford=s Grand Slam (Gone West) and Walmac=sSongandaprayer (Unbridled=s Song) are represented by48 yearlings each, followed by two younger stallionswith 45 each, first-year sire English Channel (SmartStrike), now at Lane=s End; and Darley=s Henny Hughes(Hennessy), whose first crop are now racing at two.Like After Market, English Channel has a lot of reasonsto appeal to Europeans, so consignors will be hopingthere are a few of those still around in the secondweek.

Bill Oppenheim Cont.

English Channel won six Grade I races on the grass, ranging from nine to 12 furlongs, and earned over$5.3-million. Ashford=s Scat Daddy (Johannesburg),winner of the GI Champagne S. and GI Florida Derby, has 44 yearlings catalogued in the >back books,= while

Lane=s End=s Langfuhr(Danzig) and Adena Springs=Macho Uno (Holy Bull) eachhave 42 catalogued. Darley=sfirst-crop sire Discreet Cat(Forestry), now ahalf-brother to the GI King=sBishop S. winner DiscreetlyMine, rounds out the top 10by number catalogued inBooks 3-6, in tandem with

Juddmonte=s Mizzen Mast (Cozzene), each with 38catalogued. Other first-crop sires with 30 or more cataloguedinclude: Woods Edge Farm=s Latent Heat (Maria=s Mon,37), winner of the seven-furlong GI Malibu S. forJuddmonte; Taylor Made=s Master Command (A.P.Indy, 37), who unfortunately died earlier this year; thetop handicap horse Lawyer Ron (Langfuhr, 36), whohas also died; Gainesway=s Corinthian (Pulpit, 35), who, like Discreet Cat, has already been selling well at theearlier sales; Claiborne=s Political Force (Unbridled=sSong, 33); Pin Oak=s Bob and John (Seeking the Gold,32); and Airdrie=s Flashy Bull (Holy Bull, 32). The otherswith their first two-year-olds include the WinStar duo ofBluegrass Cat (Storm Cat, 34) and Sharp Humor (Dis-torted Humor, 33); Vinery=s Silver Train (Old Trieste,32); Airdrie=s Badge of Silver (Silver Deputy); andDarley=s Rockport Harbor (Unbridled=s Song, 31). Aninteresting one with his first three-year-olds--and theonly one from that age group with 30+ catalogued--isAdena Springs= North Light (Danehill), winner of the2004 G1 Epsom Derby. From a female family of ex-treme stayers, he=s been slow to come to hand, asyou=d expect, but has come to life lately, and has oneof the leading contenders in this Saturday=s G1 St LegerS. in Arctic Cosmos. The salient point has to be that there is a big differ-ence between >second-week= sires and >second-rate=sires. There are an awful lot of stallions around withpretty serious credentials, and the fact that 25 yearlingsby Tiznow are selling in the second week is a tipoff thatthere is going to be plenty of good stock, by very credi-ble sires, on offer. It could be a real buyers= market, from the point of view of the selection available atreasonable prices--often below production cost, unfor-tunately for the breeders.

“With 12 percent fewer catalogued and 16 percent fewersold (slight drop in the clearance rate), the German yearlingsale in Baden-Baden very much held its own, with just afive percent drop in gross and a 12 percent gain in average.Meanwhile, Fasig-Tipton’s Texas sale saw a nine percentimprovement in the clearance rate from the catalogue, a 26percent increase in gross, and a nine percent increase inaverage. At least the market isn’t heading into Keenelandafter a series of declines in the most recent smaller sales.”
