Dear parents and carers

On Friday 11 September our SRC have organised a STEPtember ‘Silly Socks’ fundraiser. STEPtember is a charity event that challenges people to take 10,000 steps a day for 28 days during the month of September, while fundraising for a great cause.

All funds raised are used to support people living with cerebral palsy (CP) right across Australia and the world. All funds raised by participants are used towards life-changing support services, equipment and research into the causes and treatment of cerebral palsy.

Students are asked to wear silly socks with their school uniform and bring a gold coin donation to raise money for this worthy cause.

School attendance

Thank you to our families for ensuring that students who are unwell are kept at home. Thank you to parents who are ensuring that their children have a COVID test if they are showing symptoms and then sending through the results to the school email. We appreciate your support.

A reminder:

In accordance with advice from NSW Health, parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms.

Schools will make arrangements for students who present as unwell or have flu like symptoms to be sent home.

NSW Health have requested that schools encourage anyone who is unwell or has even mild flu-like symptoms, to arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics.

Students and staff with flu like symptoms will need to provide a copy of a negative COVID-19 test result before being permitted to return to school.

Learning Conferences

This week, we will be holding our Learning Conferences via phone with our families. The time slots will be 15 minutes to allow extra time to ensure that the Learning Conferences run smoothly.

Teachers are looking forward to discussing student learning goals with parents. A reminder that students do not need to participate in this process.

Digital Citizenship

Cyberbullying is a major concern for parents and teachers.

Next week on Tuesday 8 September, we will have the Police Liaison Officers visiting our school to speak to our Stage 2 and Stage 3 students about online behaviours and digital citizenship.

We ask all parents to closely monitor their children’s use of mobile phones and the content of group chats such as WhatsApp. Students can easily send texts or messages to other children that can be unkind or abusive.

We have had a number of reported incidents between students that have occurred outside our school gates. These can become police matters.

Please remember that most platforms including Facebook and Instagram are for children 13 year plus. Primary aged students are not able to participate in these platforms legally as they are still learning how to behave appropriately when online and need parent support to do so.

How to respond to cyber-bullying

The Department of Education's Anti-bullying site offers advice to parents and teachers on how to identify and respond to cyberbullying to keep children and young people safe online.

When trying to keep children and young people safe online, prevention is always better than cure, but when cyberbullying does happen it is important that parents, teachers and children and young people know how to respond and where they can go to get help.

The Department of Education’s Anti-bullying website refers to cyber-bullying as the act of bullying behaviour using the internet or digital devices. It might include:

• sending abusive texts and emails• posting unkind messages or images• imitating others online• excluding others online• tagging people in pictures against their wishes• threatening another person to do something such as sending revealing images.

Some strategies for children to follow to reduce and prevent cyberbullying are:

1. don’t reply or respond - bullies thrive on the reactions they get from their victims.2. save the evidence - take screenshots of cyberbullying posts so that you can use

them as evidence later3. tell a trusted adult - you do not need to deal with bullies by yourself, teachers and

parents can help4. report cyberbullying - this could be to your school or in more serious cases to the

police and the Office of the eSafety Commissioner.

The Strategic Improvement Plan 2021 – 2024

We are coming to the end of our current three-year School Plan 2018 – 2020. Next term we will begin planning for our new four-year Strategic Improvement Plan 2021 - 2024. This plan will continue to focus on improving our Literacy and Numeracy performance for all our students in line with the Department of Education and the Premier’s Priorities.

To help develop a plan that is relevant to our school context we will be requesting feedback through the Tell Them From Me Survey. The data from these surveys will ensure that our community can play a part in helping to set new improvement goals for the School Improvement Plan.

Opportunity class placement test – Year 4 As a result of the most recent advice from NSW Health, the Opportunity Class Placement Test has been rescheduled to 18 November 2020. Tests will be administered in the students' own schools and high schools won't be used as test centres this year. There will be more information sent to schools shortly.

A reminder - Physical Distancing at School Drop Off and Pick Up Times

The Department of Education continues to advise all NSW schools of updated procedures to manage physical distancing between staff and visitors such as parents on school sites.

Physical distancing means the requirement for people to distance themselves from others. The more space between you and another adult, the harder it is for the virus to spread. We strongly request parents follow these guidelines.

The morning drop off time is working very smoothly with parents bringing children to the front gate on Botany Road. The teachers are enjoying being able to welcome our students to school each morning.

Children are going straight to class where learning begins promptly at 9am. We have been able to maximise learning throughout the day with minimal disruptions to the timetable for events as well as no assemblies.

At afternoon pick up time, we are encouraging parents to arrive anytime between 2.30pm and 3.00pm. Quite a large number of parents are arriving at 2.20pm and waiting in line for the gates to open at 2.30pm.

Parents should ensure that school pick up arrangements enable them to physically distance from one another and from staff.

This is a gentle reminder that parents can arrive a little later, between 2.45pm and 3.00pm, when there are a lot less people passing through the school gates.

We will continue this process for afternoon pick up for the foreseeable future to ensure that we maintain social distancing guidelines.

I would like to thank our community for your ongoing support and adherence to the changes to school life that we are all managing this year.

Thank you again for your ongoing support.

Kind regards

Kate Holmes

Principal

The Tell Them From Me

Partners in Learning - Parent Feedback Survey This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning - Parent Feedback Survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

This survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically

take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. Your responses are very much

appreciated. More information about the survey is available at:

http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The parent survey will be conducted between

Monday 24th August 2020 till and Friday 28 September 2020.

Revised February 2019

Mobile Digital Devices * This includes any hand held device that can receive, store, process or send digital information such as smart phones, smart watches, mobile tablets, and cameras.

RATIONALE

As a communication device, mobile phones, when used appropriately, offer children and their parents many advantages in terms of ease of communication and a sense of personal safety. However, mobile phones and other digital devices have the capacity to have a negative impact on the learning environment and the safety and wellbeing of students.

These guidelines aim to establish procedures for the use of student mobile phones and other digital communication and recreation devices within the school environment, and aims to set out the responsibilities of staff, parents and students.

GUIDELINES FOR USE

1. Mobile phones may only be brought to school by students in Years 5 and 6.

2. Mobile digital devices, including Fitbits and smart watches are not to be brought to school, for reasons relating to disruption of school lessons as well as concerns for misplacement of these items.

3. On arrival at school, mobile phones must be turned off and handed into the office where they are stored securely.

4. Mobile phones must be signed out and picked up at the end of the school day from the office.

5. If students do not follow the guidelines, students may lose the privilege to bring the device to school.

6. No mobile phones or digital devices are to be used by students at school or while attending school activities, functions or excursions.

7. The school will accept no responsibility for the security of mobile phones or digital devices brought to school.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS:

1. Students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must assume total responsibility for the safe keeping of their device whilst on their way to and from school.

2. Students must turn off all mobile phones and take them to the school office immediately upon arrival at school.

3. Students must not use their mobile phones to photograph or record anything or anyone within the school premises.

4. Students must not use mobile phones or digital devices to bully, intimidate or harass other students. This includes the use of photographs, videos, messages or any other means of transferring data.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS

1. Parents should ensure that their children are familiar with their responsibilities for the use of mobile phones and digital devices.

2. Parents should not expect to contact their children via text, SMS or phone call during the school day.

3. The appropriate procedure for parents to relay messages to their children, or to contact them due to an emergency during school hours, is via a phone call to the school office.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF STAFF

1. Staff will ensure that students follow the policy guidelines whilst on the school grounds.

2. The Principal will ensure that parents are informed of this policy each year. For further information please refer to the following link:
