Toyin OdutolaNigeria1985

"Skin as geography is the terrain I expand by

emphasizing the specificity of blackness, where an

individual’s subjectivity, various realities and

experiences can be drawn onto the diverse topography of the

epidermis. From there, the possibilities of portraying a

fully-fledged person are endless."

Odutola used the same subject over time focusing on the

change of hairstyles.

The artist works to portray how ambiguous superficial aspects

of a person can be.

Bryan Lewis Saunders Washington DC

19698,000 + self-portraits.

“So I thought if I did a self-

portrait every day for the rest of my life, with no rules, the world and I could be more

linked to my nervous system. And I could die knowing that I tried to experience as much as

possible while I was alive.”

Bryan Lewis Saunders explores many ways to alter his perception of himself.

Saunders changes stimuli in his everyday life and sees the

effects it has in his portraits.

He has experimented with changing

light color, drawing based on tactile

feelings, or altering his state of mind.

The result is the emotion shown in each of his portraits

over time.
