    Conclusions:

This experiment was established to determine the level of injury in corn and the weed control efficacy of pyroxasulfone (100, 125 or 150 g/ha), carfentrazone (12, 15 or 18 g/ha), F9312-4 (112, 140 or 168 g/ha), F9310-7 (129 g/ha) and F9316-2 (1109 g/ha). These herbicides were compared to s-metolachlor (1370 g/ha) and s-metolachlor/atrazine (2520 g/ha). The corn was seeded on May 30 and the herbicide was applied preplant on May 28. The first significant rain event was on June 18 (18.8 mm). The 21 days between herbicide application and the first significant rain event may have influenced the level of weed control with the preplant herbicides evaluated. At 7, 14 and 28 DAE, there was no visible injury in corn from the herbicide treatments evaluated. At 7 DAE, pyroxasulfone (100 g/ha) plus carfentrazone (12 g/ha) provided poor control of velvetleaf, green pigweed, common ragweed, lamb’s-quarters and giant foxtail. Increasing the rate did result in improved weed control, with the high rate providing excellent control of green pigweed and lamb’s-quarters, fair control of velvetleaf and giant foxtail and poor control of common ragweed. F9312-4 and the tankmix of pyroxasulfone plus carfentrazone provided statistically equivalent weed control. F9310-7 provided good control of green pigweed and lamb’s-quarters and fair control of velvetleaf, common ragweed and giant foxtail. F9316-2 provided excellent control of green pigweed, common ragweed and lamb’s-quarters and good control of velvetleaf and giant foxtail. S-metolachlor/atrazine provided excellent control of all the weed species evaluated with the exception of common ragweed. S-metolachlor had no activity on velvetleaf, common ragweed and lamb’s-quarters and provided fair control of green pigweed and giant foxtail. F9312-4 and the tankmix of pyroxasulfone plus carfentrazone generally provided statistically equivalent weed control at 14, 28 and 56 DAE. At 56 DAE, the control was poor for all weed species evaluated. At 56 DAE, F9310-7 provided poor control of all the weed species evaluated. At 56 DAE, both F9316-2 and s-metolachlor/atrazine provided excellent control of green pigweed, good control of lamb’s-quarters and poor control of velvetleaf, common ragweed and giant foxtail. S-metolachlor applied alone did not provide commercially acceptable control of the weed species present in this experiment at 56 DAE. Generally, corn yield reflected the level of weed control.

Conclusions: This experiment was established to determine the level of injury in corn and the weed control efficacy of F9140-8 (3, 3.76 and 4.5 g/ha), pyroxasulfone (100, 125 or 150 g/ha), F9310-7 (103, 128.76 or 154.5 g/ha), F9310-7 (103 g/ha) + atrazine (1000 g/ha) and tankmixes of F9140-9 + pyroxasulfone. These herbicides were compared to s-metolachlor (1370 g/ha) and s-metolachlor/atrazine (2520 g/ha). The preplant herbicides were applied on May 28, the corn was seeded on May 30 and emerged on June 5. At 7, 14, 28 and 56 DAE, F9140-8 (3, 3.76 and 4.5 g/ha) provided no control of velvetleaf, green pigweed, common ragweed, lamb’s-quarters and giant foxtail. At 7, 14, 28 and 56 DAE, pyroxasulfone (100, 125 and 150 g/ha) provided poor control of velvetleaf, green pigweed, common ragweed, lamb’s-quarters and giant foxtail. At 7, 14 and 28 DAE, the tankmixes of F89140-8 and pyroxasulfone and premix F9310-7 provided better control of velvetleaf, green pigweed, common ragweed, lamb’s-quarters and giant foxtail than the components applied alone, suggesting possible synergism between the two active ingredients. However, by 56 DAE both the tankmixes and premix provided poor control of velvetleaf, green pigweed, common ragweed, lamb’s-quarters and giant foxtail. At 56 DAE, F9310-7 + atrazine provided good control of green pigweed, fair control of lamb’s-quarters and poor control of velvetleaf, common ragweed and giant foxtail. S-metolachlor/atrazine provided fair control of green pigweed and lamb’s-quarters and poor control of velvetleaf, common ragweed and giant foxtail. S-metolachlor provided poor control of all the weed species evaluated in this study. Generally, corn yield reflected the level of weed control.

This raises the following questions, does A19707A (bycyclopyrone) require less rainfall to activate or is it more efficacious on lamb’s-quarters and common ragweed? There was no difference in corn yield among the herbicide treatments evaluated.

Conclusions: This experiment was established to determine the level of weed control with preemergence, early postemergence and two-pass weed control programs in corn. The corn was seeded on May 26 and the preemergence applications were applied on May 28. The first significant rain event was on June 18 (18.8 mm). The 21 days between herbicide application and the first significant rain event probably influenced the level of weed control with the preemergence herbicides evaluated. At 11 and 70 DAA and 10 DAB, there was no visible injury in corn from the herbicide treatments evaluated. At 70 DAA, the preemergence application of s-metolachlor/atrazine + mesotrione provided excellent control of velvetleaf, good control of lamb’s-quarters, fair control of common ragweed and poor control of green foxtail. A19414A applied preemergence provided excellent control of velvetleaf and poor control of lamb’s-quarters, common ragweed and green foxtail. A19707A provided excellent control of velvetleaf and lamb’s-quarters, fair control of common ragweed and poor control of green foxtail. The sequential applications of either A19414A applied preemergence followed by glyphosate applied postemergence or s-metolachlor/atrazine applied preemergence followed by A19573B applied postemergence provided excellent full season control of all weed species evaluated in this experiment. The early postemergence application of glyphosate/mesotrione/s-metolachlor plus atrazine provided excellent full season weed control of the species evaluated in this experiment. Corn yield was maximized with the two-pass weed control programs and the early post tankmix. This experiment once again shows the value of a two-pass weed control programs in corn.
