Week 1 Dear parents, Welcome back to Term 3. I hope everyone had a relaxing winter holiday break. As we begin Semester 2, we will be encouraging the students to reset their goals and continue working towards achieving their personal best. The teachers have been very busy these holidays, preparing exciting and challenging learning experiences for Term 3. We also worked together on Monday to learn more about teaching children to read and comprehend in the 21 st Century. In staffing news, we welcome back Mrs Lucas and Mrs Isbester, who will be team teaching on class 1/2L. We have been lucky to keep Miss Bradbury for the rest of the year and she will be taking over class 3/4B, to replace Mrs Burke, who has gone to Kincumber PS. We also welcome three student teachers from Newcastle University, to complete their final 10-week internship. Miss McKay will be working with 3/4W, Mr Fitzsimmons will be with 1D and Mrs Calzolari will be on class 2W. Today we will hold our first Athletics carnival at Mingara Athletics Centre. We have been very lucky to be able to use this complex and give the students an opportunity to run on a proper synthetic track. I thank Mr Rippon for his organisation of this event and look forward to seeing lots of parents and family members there to join in the fun. Here’s to another positive and productive term at the best school on the planet! B. Last Term I spoke about Stan in 3/4R and his fantastic writing skills. Below is a copy of his creative writing piece. Stan has been focusing hard on using language devices to engage the reader. From the sample shown in this newsletter, I don’t think it will be long until Stan is having a book published!

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. I was so impressed to see that 27 students had not one day off in Semester 1. These students received a seaside snacks voucher on the last day of Term 2. Congratulations to those students and let’s see if we can have even more with 100% attendance in Semester 2.

The Banana Invasion By Stan, 2017 Dan and Jamie were on high alert. The commvoice crackled. "Dan! Jamie! We need you deployed at the military base right this instant!" The voice crackled out. "C'mon!" Yelled Jamie. They rushed to the army truck. When they arrived at the military complex, Dan and Jamie walked over to captain Rex. "What seems to be the problem sir" asked Dan. "Okay, this might sound a little stupid... Rex trailed off. "Bananas are invading the country." "We assume they seek revenge from us eating them all the time." "WHAT!?" Jamie laughed his head off. "Bananas?" he said when he got his breath back. "Yep, BANANAS." Sighed captain Rex. Dan and Jamie got up onto the base walls and peered through their scopes. He wasn't kidding. Tens of thousands of bananas were charging straight for them! BANG! SPAP! The bullet raced through three whole bananas forcing their own forces to squish them as they toppled over. SQUASH! SQUISH! SKWUSH! More bananas toppled over each other as bullets sprayed over the landscape. More military forces were taken down by the banana gattlers. A suicide driver smashed through the wall, causing it to collapse, leaving a giant hole. The base was breached. Bananas rushed around, taking down their forces swiftly. A bombing plane roared overhead, dropping a bomb on the huge banana army. Bananas flew everywhere. SQUISH! A banana squished a person shooting at the banana bombers. "Fall back! FALL BACK!!" commanded captain Rex. All the troops rushed to the safety of their vehicles, few of them making it and drove off into the city. "Everybody clear the area!" Rex told the civilians. Everyone ran to the fallout shelters. Rex contacted all military forces to come and help. A panicked voice came through the comm. "MAAGHHH! THIS IS MILITARY BASE 12! WE ARE UNDER ATTACK! REPEAT! WE ARE UNDER ATT AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGHH H!!!!- CSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHH BLEEP! "Looks like we're on our own. Said Rex, a little shaken. Everyone waited in silence. "YAAAAAAAAAAAAHH HH!" All the banana men came rushing towards them. BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG! !!!! TWAP! "OUCH!" "RUN!!" "MAARRRGH!" Josh was slain... CRAK! Tssssssss It began to rain and hailstones fell sinking into the bananas. Lightning lit up the sky. FWOOSH! BAWAWAW! "AAAAHHHHHHH!" the banana army flew up and hit the ground with a huge SQUISH as lightning struck the ground. All was silent. Then in the distance, "yaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!" Riot bananas came raging up the hill, immune to hailstones.ZAP! FWOOSH!" AAAH!" One of the bananas got struck by lightning, setting him on fire. DOODOODOODOO! Two lines of bananas were taken down by one gattler . "All gattlers on the front line!" commanded Rex. "OPEN FIRE!!!!!" SQQQQUUUUUUllllllll SSSSHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone fell silent. Only the sounds of the storm could be heard. "WHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" Everybody erupted with cheers and laughter.Everyone rushed out from the fallout shelters. Every year on that time and day, the people of the USA celebrated their victory and had a minute of silence for the fallen.

TERM 3 / WEEK 1

NAIDOC WEEK Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is regarded as the oldest surviving culture in the world. NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all Australian people to celebrate and honour this culture. Every year, the National NAIDOC Committee selects a theme for NAIDOC Week. The 2017 theme ‘Our Languages Matter’ aims to celebrate the unique and important role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages play in cultural identity. It aims to link people to their land and water through history, spirituality, storytelling and song. The students at Copacabana Public School will participate in a range of activities this Friday to celebrate NAIDOC Week and develop an understanding of the importance of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. Miss Newton and Miss Bradbury
