Dr. Troy D. VanAken took office as the 19th president of Thiel Col-lege in July of 2009, after being elected by the College Board of Trust-ees at a special meeting on February 20.

VanAken, who came to Thiel from Albion College in Albion, Mich., holds a bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College, and master’s and doctorate degrees from Bowling Green State University. A native of Michigan, his career in higher education began in 1994 when he was

appointed assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville and where he was later selected as assistant vice president for instructional technology. In 1999, Albion College named him vice president for information technology. After working at San Jose State University during 2002–03 through an American Council on Education Fellowship, VanAken returned to Albion with expanded responsibilities as athletic director and executive assistant to the president, and eventually vice president for business and finance. VanAken participated in Harvard Univer-sity’s Institute for Educational Management in 2005 and was named Albion’s executive vice presi-dent in 2006.

In addition to experience as a high school football and track coach, VanAken has served on committees of both the NCAA and Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Recently, he was appointed to represent the Presidents’ Athletic Conference on the NCAA Division III Chancellor/ Presidents Advisory Group. He is active in economic and community development projects and has started three successful technology related companies.

VanAken and his wife, Annette, have two children, Trey and Gabriella.

Jack Leipheimer ’74 took over as Thiel College’s director of athlet-ics on Nov. 17, 2008. He currently oversees Thiel’s 24 competitive athletics programs, 22 of which are associated with the NCAA at the Division III level.

A coaching veteran of 34 years – including 25 at the collegiate level – Leipheimer returned to Thiel as its head football coach in 2001 and promptly guided the program to national prominence. His 2005 team compiled an 11-1 record and drew two NCAA playoff games to Alumni Stadium.

Over his eight seasons at the helm of the football program, Leipheimer amassed 36 wins – which ties for third most all-time in school history – including a NCAA Division III playoff win in 2005. Under his tutelage, Thiel players earned 114 all-conference selections, 17 all-region selec-tions and 10 All-America selections. He also coached five ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Amer-icans – a testament to his emphasis on academic excellence. Leipheimer continues to stress the importance of academic and athletic success to Thiel’s student-athletes as he oversees the day-to-day operations of the athletic department. In addition, Leipheimer’s focus on fund-raising efforts supports Thiel’s entire athletics program, which includes more than 40 coaches and staff members and over 300 student-athletes.

Jack and his wife, Patti, reside in Greenville. They have two daughters: Shanna Bossler, a 2002 Thiel graduate and Krista Ferguson, a 2005 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh.

Kurt reiser enters his fourth season as the head coach

after being named the 25th head coach in thiel college football history on nov. 16, 2008. a member of the coach-ing staff in various capacities under JacK leipheimer for eight seasons, reiser most recently served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the tomcats.

As a member of the Thiel coaching staff, Reiser has been no stranger to success.

As the team’s offensive line coach from 2001 to 2006, Reiser men-tored eight Tomcats to a com-bined 19 All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference selections. Two players – Dave Hendricks and Bob Munch – were four-time selections.

In Thiel’s 11-win 2005 campaign, the Reiser-led offensive line played an integral part in securing the pro-gram’s first PAC title since 1972 and its first undefeated regular season since 1950. Five members of that unit were named to the All-PAC team, with two garnering first team honors.

While Hendricks turned in one of the best seasons of all time for a Thiel of-fensive lineman, earning AFCA first team and D3 Football.com first team All-America honors in addition to being named the Don Hansen Football Gazette National Offensive Lineman of the Year and earning an invitation to participate in the Aztec Bowl, the O-line as a whole paved the way for a

potent Tomcat attack.

Over the course of the 2005 season, Reiser’s line allowed only seven sacks in the regular season and aided in es-tablishing Steve Minton as the school’s all-time leading rusher and Darrell Satterfield and Brandon Chambers as one of the most prolific quarterback-receiver duos in school history.

After being named offensive coordina-tor prior to the 2007 season, Reiser has called the shots for several of the most impressive offensive displays in Thiel football annals.

In his inaugural season as the Tomcats’ offensive play-caller, running back Dan Hess set three school records in one day, racking up 327 yards and 30 points on 43 rushes in a 62-14 drubbing of Saint Vincent College. The next season quarterback Willie Bova conducted a similar assault on Thiel passing records against the Bearcats, completing 32 of 63 passes for 374 yards (all three are school records) and three scores.

Prior to arriving at Thiel, Reiser was the offensive coordinator at Leyden High School in Chicago for six years. A 1993 Allegheny graduate, he earned his master’s degree from DePaul Univer-sity in 1997. With the Gators, where he played under then-assistant coach Leipheimer, Reiser was a three-year starter at tight end and was a two-time All-NCAC selection and an All-Amer-ican. Reiser was also a starter on the Gators’ 1990 National Championship team.

He and his wife, Nancy, have three chil-dren: Ben, Ethan, and Ellie.

T H I E L F O O T B A L L 2 0 0 9 12

Aptly named Alumni Stadium for the outpouring of financial support

from Thiel College alumni, the facil-ity – which opened with the Tomcats’ first game of the 2001 season against Capital University – was officially dedicated during Homecoming weekend on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001. Alumni Stadium envelops Stoeber Field, named after legendary Thiel coach John B. “Jack” Stoeber.

The stadium features a red brick entrance and ticket booth area, a hospi-tality center which houses a memorabilia shop, a concession stand, seating for 1,400 and a FieldTurf synthetic turf system.

The stadium is also home to the Victory Bell (pictured middle left), which was originally part of Ridgeway Hall, a farmhouse that was bought by the college in 1876 and enlarged in 1881 to be used for as a dining hall.

The bell was used to call students to meals and later to announce athletic victories. After Ridgeway Hall was razed in 1955, the bell was placed on its own stand near where it had been as part of Ridgeway Hall until the mid-1970s, when it was moved to the Passavant Center, where it was used to call students to worship.

As Thiel’s athletic programs continue to grow and evolve, the demands on the Col-lege’s sports facilities also grow. Installation of the Rissell-Schreyer Dome, a multi-sport air structure, over Stoeber Field during winter months eases the pressure on the use of our current facilities and keeps our sports teams practicing and our intramural programs having fun all year round!

ABOUT THE PAC

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Ath-letic Conference continues its mission

of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence.

Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washing-ton and Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC rema in s a unique organi-zation in this day of high pres-sure intercol-legiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an ath-letic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself.

The PAC expanded to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III indepen-dent. Saint Vincent College, a former NAIA member, joined the conference as it began provisional membership status in NCAA Division III in 2006-07. Another former NAIA member, Geneva College, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play as it started NCAA Division III provisional membership in 2007-08. Cha-tham College became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007-08.

The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. PAC championship teams receive automatic qualification (AQ) status for most NCAA Division III national champi-onship events.

All-conference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in indi-

vidual sports such as cross country and tennis, All-PAC accolades are

based upon performances at the conference

championships.

The PAC an-nually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Tro-phies to the

schools which perform best

across the board in PAC competition.

The Washington & Jef-ferson College men and

Westminster College women captured the 2011-12 trophies.

True to its mission, the PAC has produced numerous Academic All-Americans and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the league named 735 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

Hobbies: Cheering on the Tom-cats, chasing those darn groundhogs all over campus, napping on the 50-yard line, and going out into the community to spread as much Tomcat cheer as possible!

Any time a fan makes their way to a Tom-cat football game there are a few constants that they will observe. First is that the Tom-cats will always play their hardest, and sec-ond, Tommy will be there leading the fans in rooting on his beloved team.

Since 1924 Tommy the Tomcat has been the leader of the 12th man at Thiel Col-lege and has been the heart of boosting school spirit around campus and the greater Greenville community.

Tommy is active in every facet of the Col-lege community. From our students’ first

TOMCAT PROFILE

days on campus through Homecoming, Commencement, and beyond, Tommy is a permanent fixture for all Thiel fans!

Tommy can be found hanging out at new student registration days and having his pic-ture taken with each incoming freshman. He is very visible at Thiel Homecoming events and welcomes countless hugs and high fives from visiting alumni and, of course, future Tomcats of all ages. One of his biggest (and favorite) moments is the annual Dome opening, when he proudly joins the March-ing Pride and Spirit Squad to perform for the members of the community in attendance.

Besides taking part in community service activities and hanging out with students on campus, Tommy’s passion is supporting his beloved Tomcat athletic teams. He loves every sport and roots on the teams with a ferocity all his own. At games, his job is to get the fans in attendance revved up and ready to cheer on their Tomcats!

For 87 years Tommy the Tomcat has been proundly prowling the Thiel College side-lines, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

TODAY’S GAME NOTES2012 Season PreviewAfter an 0-10 season in 2011, Thiel coach Kurt Reiser and the Tomcat football squad will look to veteran leadership to have a turnaround year in 2012.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Tomcats will be led by two new faces on the coaching staff. John Hara-kal returns to Thiel as the defensive coordinator, and Charlie Noonan comes on as the new defensive line coach. “John (Harakal) was an integral part of our suc-cess in the 2004-05 seasons, and we are very excited to have him on the staff,” said coach Reiser

The Tomcats return eight defensive starters, including four of their top five tacklers from a year ago. Senior defensive end Tim Taylor will lead the Tomcat “D” as he is coming off a First-Team All-Conference se-lection performance. During the course of the year, Taylor set the school record for tackles for loss (TFL) in a season with 22.5 and also recorded seven sacks on the year, which ranked him second all time. Twice during the 2011 campaign, (at Bethany College and away against Geneva College) Taylor registered 7.0 TFL, which was also a new school single-game mark.

“We are looking forward to having Tim back as a se-nior this fall. He brings a lot of intensity and hard work to the practice field and also during game days. We expect him to be the leader of our defense this fall,” said Reiser.

Joining Taylor on the defensive side of the ball are honorable mention all-PAC selection Julian McLean at defensive back, senior linebacker Ethan Ludwig, and junior defensive back Rob Edwards.

The Tomcat defensive backfield will be lead by McLean and Edwards who both had breakout seasons for Thiel last year. McLean earned his first All-PAC honor by being selected as an honorable mention. He totaled 57 tackles on the year including 41 solo stops, each of which were good for third on the team. Edwards registered 42 stops on the year while breaking up six passes, and he also scored the only defensive touch-down for the team on a 44-yard interception return.

Joining Edwards and McLean are a pair of seniors in Marshuan Hainesworth and Hunter Liptrap; junior John Amorose, and sophomore Martae Hainesworth.

The front seven of the defense will be lead by Taylor, who is joined on the defensive line by junior Brian Davis and senior Kris Tursky. They are joined by Lud-wig, who will lead the linebacking core this season. As a sophomore, Davis appeared in nine contests and recorded 26 total tackles while recovering one fumble. Tursky, getting more playing experience last season, was second on the team in sacks and also tied for second in tackles for loss with five.

Ludwig had a breakout season for the defense last year

as he ranked third in the Presidents’ Athletic Con-ference in total tackles with 91. He also registered five tackles for loss over the course of the season. With the departure of all-conference linebacker Ryan Dawes, the team will look to Ludwig to anchor the linebackers for the upcoming season. Sophomore Tom Thorpe and Jack Sindlinger, who saw playing time in the secondary last season, will both play linebacker this season. Joining Thorpe and Sindlinger at linebacker this year will be senior Terry Gensel, who will com-pete for additional playing time. The turn of the page to the 2012 season will also see some big changes in the offensive side of the ball as well. After a two-year stint with using a spread offense, the Tomcats will go back to being more focused on the run with the insti-tution of the multiple pro-I.

Thiel returns nine offensive starters to the field for the 2012 campaign. Junior quarterback Andrew Smith, who split time with Jared Soell under center, will take the reins of the offense this year.

“Andrew had a very good spring, and he seems to have a better handle on the offense and what his role will be in the offense this coming season. He has worked extremely hard in the off-season, and we expect him to play with some confidence this fall,” said Reiser. Last season, Smith completed 52 percent of his passes for 623 yards and four touchdowns.

For the receiving corps, Smith will have multiple weapons to throw the ball to. Leading receiver, Nate Blazevich, who registered 242 yards and two touch-downs as a sophomore, is back for his junior cam-paign and will look to continue to improve. Of the eight wide receivers or tight ends who caught a pass in the offense last year, seven will be returning in 2012, including; Blazevich, Kyle Turkalj, Nate Houpt, Zane Garza, William Frizzi, Matt Fedzen, and Tim Walker.

With the loss of De’Von Drisch as well as fellow run-ning back Brent Walter, the Tomcats will look to Tay-lor Fink in their starting backfield. Over the course of the season, Fink appeared in six contests and averaged 3.5 yards per carry during the year. Also returning to the backfield are Rich Kolesar who could see time at tailback, and Rich Smallwood and Jamaal Dorsey, who will see the field at fullback this season. “For us to be successful this season, the running game has to be an integral part of the offense”, Reiser said.

Perhaps the most experienced part of the offense will be the offense line, as Thiel returns five players who saw significant starting time. With only the loss of David Mossa, Thiel returns all-conference selection Mike Rasor as well as fellow senior Aaron Parker. The unit also returns juniors Jordan Fortuna and Rex Smith, as well as sophomore Jason Crystol.

A Brief History of Thiel vs. Juniata

The Tomcats hold a 3-2 lifetime series advantage over the Eagles, with the then-Huskies winning the first two meetings between the teams in 1921 (6-0) and 1922 (47-0). The Tomcats rattled off a third straight win with a 20-6 victory over the Eagles in 1928.

The Eagles look to even the series and win their third straight meeting against Thiel, as this is the first time the two schools have played since 1940.

Why Tomcats?Through 1923 Thiel athletic teams were known as the “Huskies.” But in 1924, greatly impressed by the spirit of the Thiel football team, Carnegie Tech (now Carn-egie Mellon) head coach Wally Steffen observed that “they played like wild, wild cats”.

This prompted Melvin A. Blair of the Greenville Re-cord-Argus to report “Thiel played like Tom’s cats,” in reference to head coach Dr. Thomas Holleran, a Greenville dentist and former all-American at the Uni-versity of Pittsburgh. Thereafter, the Thiel “Huskies”

became known as the Thiel “Tomcats”, a tribute to Dr. Holleran.

Around the PACWeek one of PAC play begins with all nine members in a tie for first place- optimism permeating through-out the conference and its individual fanbases. Saint Vincent kicks off its season hosting Bridgewater, while Bethany hosts Centre College and Westminster hosts Hiram. Grove City travels to future PAC member school Carnegie Mellon, while Washington and Jef-ferson is on the road against Methodist. Waynesburg University travels to Muskingum, while Geneva trav-els to Frostburg State. The four-time defending PAC champs, Thomas More travel to #11 ranked St. John Fisher in a game that is sure to bring the national spot-light to the PAC.

What are your expectations for this season? This is the first time in the last few years that we will be coming into camp with more upper-classmen than freshmen Our expectations are that the upperclassmen will not only be lead-ers on the field, but off of it as well I expect our players to push themselves to improve and to focus on competing and getting bet-ter each day Any time that you have as many returning starters as we have this season, you get excited about the possibilities.

How did the team look in spring practices?I was very excited with how the spring practices developed this off-season. Over the course of the practices, we saw a vast improvement in our offensive skill positions especially our quarterbacks. On the defensive side, it was a great opportunity for our new defensive coordinator, John Harakal, to imple-ment his schemes and philosophies into the defense. The upperclassmen on the defensive side of the ball really bought into the new system that John has put in place, and we are very pleased with the potential on that side of the ball moving forward.

With four of your first five games at alumni stadium, what do you hope to accomplish through the first half of the year?Right now we are focused on game one. We have our home opener on Septem-ber 1, against Juniata, and winning the first game of the season would be huge for our program. It would allow us to gain confidence heading into conference play where we play three straight games at home. By having four games at home early in the season, it allows us to have a little more confidence as a team, but it also gives us the opportunity to get into a rhythm since we do not have to travel very much over the first half. We are fo-cused on coming out of the gates strong this season, and I think we can do that with four of our first five at home. What sort of impact, if any, could you see the incoming freshmen class making on this team? The coaches have done an outstanding job once again for us, going out and find-ing not only talented players, but also good student-athletes. Not only did we recruit a good quantity of players for this season, but we also believe that the qual-ity of this class is great as well. We think we have some really good incoming fresh-men who could make an immediate im-pact on the team, but we also have great character kids coming in, who may take some time to develop, but will help this program garner success not only in this season, but in the years to come as well.

sponsored by:

As a team, what do you hope to accomplish with the implementa-tion of a new offensive scheme?Offensively, we are moving back to a mul-tiple pro-I offense . We believe that this offense will help us to run the ball more effectively. With the maturity of the of-fensive line, we hope to have the ability to not only control the line of scrimmage, but to also control the tempo of the game as well. At certain times last sea-son, we were very effective at attacking other teams in the run game . If we can do so again, not only will it help us on the offensive side of the ball with taking pres-sure off of our quarterbacks, but it will also help us defensively.

You have a large number of ath-letes on your roster this year that are returning starters and letter-winners. What sort of im-pact does that have on a team, when you have such strong vet-eran leadership?I think that having such a large group of returning starters is a great strength for any team moving forward. A lot of times, it is really hard to win with a large group of freshmen, because they are not used to the pressures that you face in colle-giate football. The past two seasons have been tough for us because we have been forced to play a large number of fresh-men and sophomores over the course of the season. This year however, because of what has happened over the past two seasons, we have a large group of athletes that have a lot of playing experience. As coaches, not only does it mean a lot to have veteran leadership on the field right now, but it also helps us for the future because we do not have to play fresh-men right away. We can allow them to develop and mature when we have up-perclassmen on the field . Strong veteran leadership is important to any program, and I believe that we have a solid group of veteran leaders this season.
