American Folklore: Westward Expansion Tales

MYTH: fictional story explaining gods, heroes, and origins of earthly life

(origin myth) LEGEND: traditional story about a person which reflects a culture’s values. Often believed to be “historically true,” it isn’t or can’t be proven.

TALL TALE: wild adventure tale about a real or fictitious person enjoyed for it’s imaginative telling – roots in oral tradition.

• A Black American hero of superior strength and grit

• Often seen as a former slave, possibly from Tennessee
