1 CLARKATLANTASPORTS.COM | @CAUPanthers @CAU_Football

Dr. Ronald A. Johnson assumed the presidency of Clark Atlanta University on July 1, 2015.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he earned the B.A. in economics and the MBA in finance from Adelphi University. He earned the M.A and the Ph.D. degrees in economics from Stanford University. As the new president of Clark Atlanta University (CAU), he will harness a tremendous wealth of academic talent of faculty and students and a nationwide base of passionate alumni and opportunities to create strategic alliances that will elevate CAU’s competitive advantage. Dr. Johnson and his wife, Irene, expect to sustain the vibrancy of CAU as a premier institution of higher education and learning. They want to help build a CAU com-munity that is inspired by social purpose and fueled by intellectual vitality, cultural diversity, and global awareness.

Prior to becoming the CAU president, Dr. Johnson had been the dean of the Texas Southern University Jesse H. Jones (JHJ) School of Business and a full professor of finance since 2011. Under his leadership, in 2014, the JHJ School of Business was listed as one of The Princeton Review’s 295 best U.S. business schools, and GetEducated.com listed its eMBA program as one of the best online buys; in 2015, U.S. News & World Report listed the JHJ School of Business as one of the best graduate schools. Dr. Johnson also served as dean of the Western Carolina University College of Business in Cullowhee, N.C., where the MBA program was included in The Princeton Review’s Best Business Schools in the nation; its online master’s degree program in project management earned GetEducated.com’s distinction as the nation’s top-ranked online program in quality and affordability.

Dr. Johnson built his career around teaching, mentoring and preparing future leaders in the investment, global financial management, international business, portfolio and securities analysis, economics and banking arenas, serving with distinction for two decades as BB&T Distinguished Professor of Capitalism and professor of finance, Western Carolina University; JP Morgan Chase Professor of Finance, Texas South-ern University; visiting associate professor of finance in the School of Business and Industry at Florida A&M University; assistant professor of finance, Northeastern University; and visiting assistant professor of

economics, Howard University. He also served as president and chief investment officer of Smith Graham & Company, an institutional investment management company in Houston, Texas, where he managed $3 billion in assets. Prior to joining Smith Graham, he served as director of global fixed income research and senior portfolio manager for Templeton Worldwide Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he oversaw assets valued at $2 billion. Dr. Johnson also served as the chief strategist and chairman of the investment committee for Americas Trust Bank in Miami, Florida; division chief for domestic financial markets with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York; and as an economist with the International Monetary Fund, as well as The Federal Reserve System Board of Governors in Washington, D.C.

Clark Atlanta University is the largest of the nation’s UNCF 37 member institutions, as well as the largest among its affiliated United Methodist Church Global Higher Education Ministries HBCU institutions. As such, Dr. Johnson will work with talented faculty, dedicated staff, and engaged students to produce the next generation of global leaders of research, innovation, and education that touch the lives of millions of people in the United States and worldwide. Reinvigorat-ing CAU’s research and education model and realizing strategic advantages will result in increased enrollment, enriched bases of graduate and undergraduate research, strengthened student support programs, and increased external funding support. Dr. Johnson says that:

Today, we see a university that is poised to be a leading model for the 21st century in teaching, learning, and world-class research. Our aim is for the world community to see, embrace and share in the awesome mix of inspiration, value creation, and leadership that will continue to be the mark of distinction for Clark Atlanta University.

“In Ronald Johnson, we have identified a scholar of tremendous intellect, a global financier with impeccable credentials, an institution-builder with a demon-strable record of successes, a fundraiser with highly developed strategic acumen and a compassionate role model whose obvious desire to engage and empow-er students is borne out of his own personal journey. I am honored to have Ron and his wife, Irene, become part of the CAU family.” Alexander B. Cummings Jr.- Chairman, CAU Board of Trustees

President Dr. Ronald A. Johnson

LAST MEETING | SEPT. 5, 2015PANTHERS 0, GOLDEN TIGERS 26

TUSKEGEE, Ala.- In the season opening debut for first-year head coach Kevin Ramsey and the 2015 Panthers, Clark Atlanta University fell 26-0 to Tuskegee University Saturday at Alumni Stadium in Tuskegee, Alabama.

A new look offense for the Panthers controlled the time of possession in the game, 36:46 compared to 23:14 for Tuskegee, despite not put-ting points on the board. The Golden Tigers scored two touchdowns on their last two consecutive possessions in the first quarter, at the 5:50 and 3:40 mark, on a 46-yard quarterback run by Kevin Lacey and a one-yard run by running back Josh Matthews, respectively.

On a punt attempt, a CAU fumble in the end zone proved to be costly to open the second quarter as Tuskegee pounced on the ball for a Golden Tiger touchdown that extended its lead 20-0 after a successful two-point conversion. Turnovers plaque the Panthers, particularly in the second quarter, as quarterback Matthew Vincent threw his second pick on their opening drive. A strong defensive front, however, re-gained possession for the Panther offensive after a Tuskegee fumble. CAU could not find the back of the end zone as the Golden Tigers took a 20-point lead into the half.

Despite a missed field goal to open the third quarter, the Golden Tigers capitalized off a CAU interception on its first possession after Lacey connected with Leo Gilbert for a 10-yard touchdown that swelled their lead to 26. Tuskegee had some kicking woes in the game as CAU senior defensive back Joshua Tate blocked the second extra point attempt. CAU’s defense held Tuskegee scoreless for the remainder of the game.

With a 94-yard drive that started on the Tuskegee two-yard line, the Panthers was stop short of the goal line on two attempts in the red zone from their own four to close out the game.

Running back Jaha McCray led CAU’s ground attack with 40 yards on 11 carries while averaging 3.6 yards per run. Vincent, who finished 10-for-24, led a CAU offense that garnered 153 passing yards with 66 and split quarterback duties with newcomer Dashawn Blow who connected on 7-of-8 passes for 58 yards. The Panthers offense also tallied 14 first downs which were two more than Tuskegee’s.

Defensively, Tate recorded a team-high seven tackles along with one interception and one pass breakup followed by Jaquatin Victrum with five solo tackles. Sophomore Deandre Jackson led the Panthers on special teams with 52 punt return yards on one attempt and 48 kick return yards. He finished with All-Purpose yards for the Panthers including 22 receiving yards.

WEEK 1 | TUSKEGEE GOLDEN TIGERS 2016 CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY PANTHERS FOOTBALL NOTES

PANTHERS: 2016 COACHING STAFF

Staff LiSting Head CoaCH | Kevin RamSeyKevin Ramsey takes over as Interim Head Coach of the Clark Atlanta University Panthers football team on July 13th, 2015 after spending the previous three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Alabama State University, a NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) member school. Last season Ramsey formed the ASU defense into one of the top in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), finishing the season second in scoring defense (24.7). ASU was also second in the SWAC in rushing defense as well as defensive pass efficiency.

In 2013 Ramsey’s defense showed improvement over the previous season as it finished second among SWAC schools in scoring defense allowing 25.8 points per game.

During his first season with ASU in 2012, Ramsey’s attacking style of defense made it hard on the opposition’s running game as the Hornets allowed just 110.1 yards rushing per game,

which not only led the SWAC but was good enough for 11th nationally. ASU led the SWAC in quarterback sacks (50), a 4.17 per game average that placed ASU second among all FCS teams. Ramsey served in the same capacity at Texas Southern Univ. from 2009-10, and during part of the 2012 season, with a stint as interim head coach during the 2011 season. Ramsey’s Tigers led the FCS in total defense in both 2010 (204.9 yards per game allowed) and 2011 (245.0 ypg allowed), and in fewest first downs allowed (140 in 2010, 141 in 2011). His 2010 squad led the nation in six statistical categories: total defense, fewest first downs allowed, sacks (45), tackles for loss (112), third down percentage conversion percentage against (22.5), and pass efficiency defense.

Prior to Texas Southern, Ramsey spent five seasons as defensive coordinator at Carson-Newman (2004-08), where his units ranked in the top 20 in several national categories each season.

Ramsey began his coaching career at Kansas State (1984-85) as a graduate assistant, before moving on to serve as junior varsity defensive coordinator at Mission High School in Mission, Texas (1986). Ramsey would then continue his career at some of the nation’s biggest schools - Kansas State (1987-89, outside linebackers), Northwestern (1990-92, defensive line/defensive backs), West Virginia (1993-94, defensive backs), Tennessee (1995-98, defensive backs), Georgia (1999, defensive coordinator) and Michigan State (2000, defensive backs).

Ramsey, who participated in NFL coaching internships with the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles, coached three seasons as secondary coach for the Arizona Cardinals (2000-02) before returning to the college ranks at Arizona State in 2003.

Teams that Ramsey has coached have been to a number of bowl games, including the Outback Bowl with Georgia (2000), the Carquest Bowl (1995) and Sugar Bowl (1994) with Big East Champion West Virginia, two trips to the Citrus Bowl (1996, 97), the Orange Bowl (1998) and the Fiesta Bowl National Championship Game with Tennessee (1999).

Ramsey was a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection at defensive back while playing at Indiana State from 1980-83. He was a second team All-American as a senior, in addition to playing baseball for the Sycamores. He graduated from Indiana State with a degree Physical Education in 1984.

A native of East St. Louis, Illinois, Ramsey and his wife Doreen have four daughters: Kajavia, Samiya, Tresnae and Amariell.

clark atlanta HISTORY

Clark Atlanta University is a comprehensive, private, urban, coeducational institution of higher education with a predominantly African-Ameri-can heritage. It offers undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees as well as certificate programs to students of diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The University was established in 1988 through the consolidation of its two parent institutions, Atlanta University (1865), the nation’s first institution to award graduate degrees to African Americans, and Clark College (1869) the nation’s first four-year liberal arts college to serve a primarily African-American student population.

Atlanta University, founded in 1865 by the American Missionary Association, with subsequent assistance from the Freedman’s Bureau, was, before consolidation, the nation’s oldest graduate institution serving a predominantly African-American student body. By the late 1870s, Atlanta University had begun granting bachelor’s degrees and supplying black teachers and librarians to public schools across the South. In 1929-1930, the institution began offering graduate education exclusively in various liberal arts areas, and in the social and natural sciences. It gradually add-ed professional programs in social work, library science and business administration. The institution during this period associated with Spelman and Morehouse colleges in a university plan known as the Atlanta University System. The campus was moved to its present site, and the modern organization of the Atlanta University Center emerged.

The story of the Atlanta University Center over the next 20 years includes significant developments. The schools of library science, education and business administration were established in 1941, 1944 and 1946, respectively. The Atlanta School of Social Work, long associated with the Uni-versity, gave up its charter in 1947, to officially become part of the University. One of the founding faculty in the School of Social Work was W.E.B. Du Bois, who wrote his most influential works during the 23 years he spent at Atlanta University, from 1897-1910 on the faculty of the history and economics departments, and later, from 1934-1944 as chair of the sociology department.

Clark College was founded in 1869 as Clark University by the Freedmen’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which later would become the United Methodist Church. The University today celebrates its historic bond with the denomination. Clark University was named for Bishop Davis W. Clark, who was the first president of the Freedmen’s Aid Society and became bishop in 1864. The first Clark College class was housed in a sparsely furnished room in Clark Chapel, a Methodist Episcopal Church in Atlanta’s Summer Hill section. In 1871, the school relocat-ed to a newly purchased property at Whitehall and McDaniel streets. In 1877, the school was chartered as Clark University.

An early benefactor, Bishop Gilbert Haven, visualized Clark as “the University of all the Methodist schools founded for the education of freedmen. Strategically located in Atlanta, the gateway to the South, the institution was founded to “give tone” to all other institutions of the Methodist Episcopal Church providing education for Negro youth. After several changes in location, Bishop Haven (who was Bishop Clark’s successor) helped acquire 450 acres in South Atlanta where, in 1880, the school conferred its first degree. In 1883, Clark established a department in honor of Dr. Elijah H. Gammon, known as Gammon School of Theology. By 1888, Gammon School of Theology became an independent seminary and, today, is part of the Interdenominational Theological Center.

For purposes of economy and efficiency, during the 1930’s, it was decided that Clark would join the Atlanta University Complex. While students on the South Atlanta campus fretted over final examinations in the winter of 1939, work was begun across town on an entirely new physical plant adjoining Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Visitors to the campus today will see that part of that preparation remains intact. Three vaults in the basement of Clark Atlanta University’s administration building, Harkness Hall, bear the names of each of the three institutions. Since the administration of each institution was conducted out of Harkness Hall, their respective assets were secure there, as well. In 1957, the controlling boards of six institutions (Atlanta University, Clark College, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College*, Spelman College and Gammon Theological Seminary ratified new articles of affiliation to create the Atlanta University Center, the most prevalent consor-tium of African-American private institutions of higher education in the United States.

During the 1980s some of the advantages of proximity, which had seemed promising earlier, again became evident. Clark College and Atlanta University through consolidation preserved the best of the past and present and “Charted a Bold New Future.” Clark Atlanta University was creat-ed on July 1, 1988.

The first President of Clark Atlanta University was Dr. Thomas W. Cole, Jr., who served concurrently as the President of both Atlanta University and Clark College prior to the 1988 consolidation. In November 1987, after more than a year of discussion, the Boards of Trustees of Atlanta University and Clark College authorized an exploration of the potential advantages of closer working arrangements between the two institutions, including their consolidation into one university. In April 1988, the joint committee delivered its report entitled Charting A Bold New Future: Proposed Combination of Clark College and Atlanta University to the Boards for ratification. The report recommended that the two schools be consolidat-ed into a single institution. On June 24, 1988, the Boards of both Clark College and Atlanta University made the historic decision to consolidate the two institutions, creating Clark Atlanta University. The new and historic University inherits the rich traditions of two independent institutions, connected over the years by a common heritage and commitment; by personal, corporate and consortia relationships; and by location.

Dr. Ronald A. Johnson became the fourth President of Clark Atlanta University on July 1, 2015.

Clark Atlanta University (CAU) President Ronald A. Johnson today announced the appointment of J. Lin Dawson as the institution’s new Athletics Director, effective Wednesday, Nov. 18. The former New England Patriot brings more than 20 years of administrative, academic and entrepreneurial experience to the CAU program. Dawson comes to Clark Atlanta from Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C., where he has served as interim director of Athletics since 2013. In this new role, he will oversee the University’s

NCAA Division II athletic program compliance, budgeting, operations, advancement, student-athlete recruitment and professional staffing and development. He also will serve as a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet.

Dawson attended North Carolina State University and earned the B.S. degree in speech and communi-cations from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. He completed the MBA degree in human resource management/learning and knowledge management from Walden University in 1993, and is presently a Ph.D. student in Regent University’s School of Business and Leadership’s organizational leadership program.

“In Lin Dawson, we have found an individual of unimpeachable character who personifies the highest ide-als of sportsmanship, competitiveness, academic excellence and administrative effectiveness,” President Johnson said. “His career path and record of servant leadership enliven our aim to mobilize for the future by producing student athletes who are well rounded, successful on the field and in the classroom and fully capable of applying the values of fair play, mental and physical discipline and hard work to their pursuit of academic, personal and career goals.”

Dawson, who in 1981 was drafted in the eighth round by the New England Patriots, filled the first-string tight end position and was an integral offensive presence for 10 seasons, including1986 AFC Champion-ship and Super Bowl XX appearances. Following his NFL career, he was among the nation’s first to design and implement leadership diversity programs for collegiate athletic programs and professional sports, elevating programming in more than 40 major universities and professional sports.

Dawson’s reputation as an efficient program builder is well-deserved. While director of athletics at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) (2000-2003), he initiated the Life Skills Program for student-athletes, increased athletic scholarships by 40 percent, eliminated a previous administration’s budget deficit and maintained the conference’s best corporate partnership program. As Grambling State University’s (GSU) athletics director and special assistant to the president (2008-2011), he was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup for having the best athletic program in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 2010 and increased cor-porate sponsorship revenues by 400 percent. His teams won several conference championships, including National Black Champions in Football (2009). He also initiated a new fundraising program resulting in increased alumni and fan support, and he created the Port City Football Classic, which produced net revenues of $700,000 in its first year. His leadership experience also includes service as associate athletics director at VCU (2005-2006) and associate director of training and education at Northeastern University (1991-1994).

As a former student-athlete for the NC State Wolfpack, Dawson was a four-year starter and member of the 1979 ACC Championship Team. His many awards include commendations from: The White House, the Anti-Defamation League, National Football League, NCAA Division IA Athletic Directors Association, The Peter F. Drucker Foundation, The Boston Herald American and the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.

An ordained minister, Dawson and his wife of 30 years, Margo, have three adult children.
