A glance at movie billboards worldwide shows how popular American movies are today in many countries.

International students share their views on the impact of this phenomenon

in their countries.

From last week: (English is native to only seven countries) and widely spoken in the Benelux

countries (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg), Scandinavia and India

In my opinion, one of the most serious influences of American culture on my country is created by Hollywood movies. Because of the economic domination of the U.S.A. in the world and serious political and economical problems in my country, the movie theaters in our cities are filled with Hollywood action movies.

The low financing available to our movie directors doesn't give them the possibility of creating high quality art, so the movie theaters are swamped with low cost American films--violent action films. This type of dominance creates a negative effect on the young generation and can increase crime. In this situation, we see not just the spread of culture to another country, but also the spread of the problems of that culture.

Vanessa Rosenfeld from Germany

The cinemas would be empty without Hollywood. The American movie industry has been popular in Germany since the 1920s. In contrast, the German film industry wasn't and still isn't very big although the production of TV programs such as series, operas, game shows and live shows is very high.

The odd thing about movies imported from the states and about the German mentality is that Germans like to watch these movies in the German language. Therefore, all of them get dubbed. As a result, they seem not to be very different. For this reason, people don't think that Germany is losing its cultural identity watching exported movies from the U.S.

Whenever I see a good American movie, I am always touched, but inside my feelings are different. Because these are movies for Americans, they cannot move me the same way. That's why I wish we could have our own movies.
