5 Pillars of IslamApril

1. Reciting the creed, “There is no god but Allah, Mohammed his messenger.”

Dealing with the Challenge

of Islam2. Prayer: Praying 5 times a day

6 articles of fAITHApril

1. Belief in the unity of God: Rejection of the notion of the trinity. God is one.

Dealing with the Challenge

of Islam 2. Belief in God’s angels: Angels don’t have free will and don’t sin. “Jinn” are angelic-like beings that are evil.

Page 14: Week 12 Islam - part 2

April 3. Belief in God’s Prophets: The Qur’an affirms Jesus as a prophet of God!

Dealing with the Challenge

of Islam4. Belief in God’s books: (qualified) The Qur’an affirms the Torah, psalms and “gospel”, but Muslims view them as corrupt compare to the Qur’an.

Page 15: Week 12 Islam - part 2

April 5. Belief in Final Judgment: Islam is clearly a system of works-based salvation and merit.

Dealing with the Challenge

of Islam6. Belief in Divine Destiny: Everything is a decree of Allah and takes places because of his will.

Page 16: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Our Main ArgumentApril

1) The Qur’an says the words of God cannot be changed or corrupted.

Dealing with the Challenge

of Islam

2) The Qur’an says the Bible is the Word of God.

3) Therefore, on the Qur’an’s authority, the Bible could not have been changed or corrupted, as many Muslims claim.

Uthman(Third successor to

Mohammed)

During the reign of Uthman, the third successor (caliph) to Muhammad, word came to him that the Muslims in the various provinces were differing considerably in their reading of the Qur’an

Page 45: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Uthman decided to unite the people on a “mushaf wahid" (single text) and, after calling for Zaid’s codex which was conveniently in Medina in Hafsah’s possession where the caliph had his seat of government,

Uthman(Third successor to

Mohammed)

Page 46: Week 12 Islam - part 2

he ordered Zaid with three others to transcribe his manuscript into seven exact replica copies and to send one copy to each province with the order that all the other manuscripts of the Qur’an in existence be burnt.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Vol. 6, p. 479)

Ubayy Ibn-Ka’b

(Preferred text in Syria)Known as “the master reciter”

Page 48: Week 12 Islam - part 2

The codices of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud and Ubayy ibn Ka’b were specially singled out and both were destroyed. Uthman

(Third successor to Mohammed)

Page 49: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud at first strongly resisted the order. Zaid’s copy had never been standardized as an official text and it was used purely as a matter of convenience, being close at hand in Medina and not identified with any particular group of Muslims.

Uthman(Third successor to

Mohammed)

Page 50: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Abdullah complained that he had directly obtained seventy surahs from Muhammad while Zaid was still a young child – why should he now forsake what he had acquired?

Uthman(Third successor to

Mohammed)

Page 51: Week 12 Islam - part 2

He also plainly stated that he preferred the Qur’anic recitation of Muhammad himself to that of Zaid, implying that he did not regard Zaid’s codex as completely authentic and adding that "the people have been guilty of deceit in the reading of the Qur’an" (Ibn Sa’d, Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir, Vol. 2, p. 444).

Uthman(Third successor to

Mohammed)

Page 52: Week 12 Islam - part 2

The Bible has only been burnt by its enemies. Uthman burnt every other manuscript of the Qur’an other

than the one he conveniently had at hand. Codices that had been widely recognized as authoritative texts

in the various provinces were burnt in favour of a manuscript that Hafsah (a widow of Mohammed)

had simply kept under her bed!

Page 60: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Why do foreign words appear through out the arabic Qur’an, when arabic

equivalents were available?

Contradictions

Page 62: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Can we change Allah’s words or not?

Page 63: Week 12 Islam - part 2

And none can alter the words of Allah

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 6:34

None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing. Surah 6:115

Page 64: Week 12 Islam - part 2

We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allah is over all

things competent?

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 2:106

Page 65: Week 12 Islam - part 2

And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, [O Muhammad], are but an inventor

[of lies]." But most of them do not know.

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 16:101

Page 66: Week 12 Islam - part 2

What is the punishment for adultery?

Page 67: Week 12 Islam - part 2

The [unmarried] woman or [unmarried] man found guilty of sexual intercourse - lash each one of them with a hundred lashes, and do not be taken by pity

for them in the religion of Allah , if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a group of the

believers witness their punishment.

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 24:2

Page 68: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Those who commit unlawful sexual intercourse of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify, confine the

guilty women to houses until death takes them or Allah ordains for them [another] way.

Nine signs to Moses or Five?

Page 70: Week 12 Islam - part 2

And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs, so ask the Children of Israel [about] when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, "Indeed I think, O Moses, that you are affected by magic."

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 17:101

Page 71: Week 12 Islam - part 2

So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs, but they

were arrogant and were a criminal people.

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 21:98

Page 76: Week 12 Islam - part 2

Should we believe the parts of the Qur’an that confirm the Bible or the

parts that contradict it?

Page 77: Week 12 Islam - part 2

O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent

down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah , His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day

has certainly gone far astray.

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 4:136

Page 78: Week 12 Islam - part 2

So if you are in doubt, [O Muhammad], about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so

never be among the doubters.

Problem: Contradictions

Surah 10:94

The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on

before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear

to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.

Surah 10:95

Page 82: Week 12 Islam - part 2

And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict

the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.

They have certainly disbelieved who say, " Allah is the third of three."
