Lecture Worksheet #3

As you walk around the computer lab, you notice many of your students are on social networking sites such as Facebook.

You notice that this leads to decreased productivity and students constantly asking you to repeat directions.

What are some classroom management strategies you can use to deter students from getting off-task?

Tips

1. Always run through a technology lesson ahead of time -- and always have a back-up plan

2. Type directions for frequently used computer operations, laminate them, and connect them with a circle ring. Keep a set next to each computer.

3. Have students turn off their monitors when you're giving directions.

4. Appoint classroom technology managers (attendance, technical, end-of-class).

5. Have older students set up the process for the next class in the computer lab.

6. When working on lengthy technology projects, print out step-by-step instructions. Include some that say "Save your work; do not go any further until you help your neighbors reach this point."

7. Make it a class rule that students can help one another but cannot ever touch another student's computer.

8. Keep a red plastic cup at each computer. When students need help, have them place the highly visible cups on top of their monitors.
