Principals’ Report

We are very proud of our Senior Boys and Intermediate Girls Volleyball teams who played at the Hume Regionals in Albury on Wednesday, narrowly missing qualification for State finals. Thanks to Mr Davies and

Mrs Kidd for coaching the teams.

We had a number of students who did a fine job representing the College in the community on ANZAC day. We owe so much to those who have served and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may have the good fortune to live in a peaceful and free society. It is hearting that so many of our young people involve themselves on this day by attending ceremonies and representing different organisations, reflecting on the sacrifices others have made for us. Abbey and Amy Harvey laid a wreath for the College in Eildon, Riley Thomas in Marysville. In Alexandra James Geldart laid a wreath on behalf of Federal Member of Parliament Helen Haines, Jamie Baird on behalf of State Member of Parliament Cindy McLeish, Kalan Lyttle and Tim Sotiropoulos on behalf of the Red Cross and Makenna Hedger and Jorja Jenkins laid a wreath with the Scouts. Our College Captains,

Oscar Draper and Eden Hayes, did an excellent job reading the requiem at the Alexandra Service.

Last week our Year 8 students had a great time at Phillip Island. Phillip Island offers a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience a coastal environment and the activities focus on challenge, collaboration and teamwork. The Year 8 camp and hopping on a surfboard is a highlight in the school career of our students. This would not be possible without the hard work of the staff who volunteered to be with the students for the week: Mr Bartle,

Mr Davies, Mr Nadj, Mrs Evans, Mrs McGahy and Miss Kenner.

Miss Kenner deserves a special mention, she has done a sterling job organising the Year 7, 8 and 9 camps. Her wonderful coordination of the camps has ensured students and staff had a positive and rewarding experience on

each of the camps.

We have the College Athletics next Friday, which we hold on Briggs Oval down at our Community Centre.

Parents and family are most welcome to come and watch.

On Monday our Year 10 students have Mock Interviews in their “Lifeskills” classes. Our local Rotary club are generously acting as our interviewers. It may be a good conversation at home as to what “mock” job students are

applying for on Monday.

Every day of learning makes a positive impact. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you need help with attendance. Sharon Parbery is our Attendance Coordinator and she is ably supported by Bron Howell and our

House Leaders.

Year 7 Science Class

With Mr Higgins

Distillation to separate mixtures

Students in Year 7 Science have been

learning about separating mixtures

through conducting experiments to

utilise differences in boiling points. Mr

Higgins has been very impressed at

his students’ ability to recognise why

some substances dissolve in water

better than others,

(due to their polarity!).

Distillation—the process by which

a mixture is separated by heating

a solution and condensing using a

cooling tube. The liquid collected

is the distillate.

Next week, year 7’s will be given

their very own jar of sludge, and will

be set the challenge of separating the mix into different components.

Coming up in Year 7 science,

students are going to study

classifications.

They will learn how to classify plants

and animals into their 5 different

kingdoms… Protista, Fungi, Plantae

and Animalia.

Hume Volleyball

Two teams from our College went to Lauren Jackson Stadium in Albury to represent the Southern Ranges at Hume Region. The Senior Boys had put in countless lunchtimes to train for the event culminating in some

outstanding quality volleyball being displayed. They did however meet their match when they came up against the boys from Shepparton High. They were thrown straight into that match with little time to warm up. Ryan

Hughes was also carrying a bit of a shoulder injury. The lack of depth in the side was also possibly a factor with many Year 12 boys opting to stay at school due to study commitments. On a good day, Shepparton were

certainly beatable. Our boys started to gel in their second match, got into a solid groove to win both games, and took out the match without the need to go to a third game. Overall they placed as runners up, another pennant

to add to their collection over the years. Top effort!

The Intermediate Girls team had a decent amount of depth, being able to put through a few rotations of subs to stay fresh in each match. The girls were very consistent in getting the ball back to their opposition, giving them

opportunities to make unforced errors. They only lost the one match for the day, unfortunately a few slow starts meant they had gone to the deciding third game to win their matches. Results are still pending, however it

is likely they came second overall based on countback.

House Athletics

The school athletics will take place on Friday the 7th. Parents and friends are more than welcome to attend, we

do require visitors to sign in at the Stadium entrance for COVID protocols. A full program of events will be

posted on Sentral next week to view scheduling. Students are allowed to enter a maximum of five individual

events.

Toby Prothero, Jacob Bourke, Ryan Hughes,

Joss Lopez, Bowen McCarthy, Graedy Keating

Louise Hurrey, Jordan Woehl, Eliza Gesler, Jazmin Collett, Mikaela Krijt, Taylah Dean, Mia Fitzpatrick, Micci Soriano, Emma Whitehead.
