Patterns In NaturePeacock Feathers

There are a large number of nature pattern exists on earth. Most of them

are obvious but some need a close observation because we might not see

it by naked eyes. Each pattern will have its own principle rule of its

form.

The pattern that I have chosen is Peacock feathers. The peacock has iridescent blue-green or green colored plumage. When the peacock fans its tail, it will be the most amazing creations of nature. Green occupies most of the area of the tail and it decorated with blue/brown round patterns which actually looks like the eyes and it will immediately attracted all eyes on it.

ExplorationPeacock Feathers

The overlapping feathers which seem chaos but it actually arranged in a basic order. According to Kandinsky ( Clack Pooling – Analytical drawing ), there are 3 stages in each pattern. Stage 1, identify the pattern and bring it to the geometrical form. For my patterns, as base pattern are already curves it is easy to see its basic form, i drew many curves stacked on each other. After I’ve done so, i applied stage 2 which i have to identify the relationships between the curves and expresses them through the linear form. As each curve in my drawing have the same scale and it is going down diagonally straight, i found the linear connection between each curve are many parallel straight lines. The purpose of step 2 is to help us to see the connection between each pattern. Stage 3: break the patterns down further by using only points and lines which are the tension and connection between the patterns

Pattern's recipe1. Firstly, i start with a side way curve.

2. Continue to draw the next curves in a straight line so that each end of the curves connect to each other.

3. Start to draw the curves on the next line, the starting point of each curve should start from the top of the curve in front and end in the top of the next curve.

4. Repeat step 3

DEVELOPEMENT Model Making

STEP 1 : I began to build my model by cutting out many strips of paper of the same lengths and widths. Each strip is about 15cm long with the width of 1cm.

STEP 2 : Next, I folded the 2 ends of the paper by 1.5cm on each side and then stick them together to create a curve as shown in the photo.

STEP 3: Basically, in this step, I just stick them all together. For those on the top, I don't glue them like step 2. I just folded the trips, and instead of sticking them together, I stick them on the side of the under curves.

STEP4 : Continue to paste all the curves together and I had the final model.

The whole process took me about 1 hour to finish. As we can see the model is curling in the bottom. This could be the result of glue's dry out and make the paper curl.

DEVELOPEMENT Model Making

As for my 2nd model, I still use the same method at the making of model one. But this time, I changed it a little. This time, I don't make many same curves anymore. Instead, I make many curves with different scale, thickness and the two sides are mirroring each other. Especially, everything is happening in one big curve.

I decided to put the 1st model on top of the 2nd model. It appear in this really nice shape. I was thinking of layer each frame with different color colorful like a peacock tail. And when the lantern light turns on, it will give the illusion of colors.

Precedent StudyEsplanade – Theaters on the Bay, Singapore

Esplanade – is a waterside building of waterfront land alongside Marina bay. This is an art performing center for the nation of Singapore. As one of the world’s busiest arts centers, Esplanade offers a staggering range of programs which caters to all audiences. The building was designed by two architectural DP Architects of Singapore and the London-base Michael Wilford & Partners. The design, presented to the public in 1994, consisted of unadorned glass cases over the theaters. The design is intend to create a tropical climate of Singapore, the aluminum shaded had been added to the final design. The unique design have been said to have an similar appearance to the durian.

The pattern used on the roof is resemble to my stack of curves overlapping each other.

DEVELOPEMENT Model Making – Clay

1.For the first model, many pieces of circle were put together. The circles are getting bigger as the lantern is getting bigger. I'm just trying to recreate the shape of the peacock's tail.2. In the 2nd model, still using circles but this time I doubled the circle together and then I put it on top of each other. The result is as shown in the bottom left picture. Light bulbs can be insert inside each hole.3. This time, instead of circle, I tried to use long clay strips to create the circles. Each trip makes 3 circles and then I just put them all together. I'm still not sure how to insert light bulbs for this model so it won't be in final decision.

DevelopmentLantern

I kind of like both of my model so I decided to combine it into one model. According to this model, the body part would be developed by sticking all the circles on top of each other. The smaller side would be the top of the lantern. The fringes just come out from the bottom of the lantern as shown in the pictures.
