Week 4 Term 4 2019 The Wallsend South Public School community values and respects all people as individuals and believes in life-long
learning, the celebration of success and the achievement of academic and social potential for all, in a secure, stimulating
and challenging environment.
Principal’s Message Celebration Night Student Photos
During our whole school celebration event slide shows are shown to the audience. These slideshows may
contain images of your child. These are only shown during this event and will not be put into the newsletter or
housed on our website. If you do not want your child’s image to be included for this event please advise us
through the school email by Friday this week (8th November 2019).
Trialling a New Tallong Format
This term we have been trialling using Microsoft Sway for our newsletter for staff as well as shared what it looks
like with our School Council and our P&C. The feedback from all involved so far has been positive and
enthusiastic. The benefit of using Sway for our newsletter is that it is compatible with mobile devices, making it
easier to read and navigate in comparison to the current document form which requires you having to enlarge
text and continuously scroll/move the screen so that you can read all messages. Therefore Sway is more user
friendly. Next week we will send out the newsletter as usual but will also send out a copy in Sway through
Skoolbag so that you can compare the two versions. We would appreciate any feedback once you have had a
chance to use the new version next week as we are anticipating moving to Sway. More information about how
you can provide feedback will be provided in next week’s newsletter.

Congratulations Mr Parkinson
Congratulations to our previous principal, Mr Christopher Parkinson, on receiving a Life Membership with the

any outstanding fees please contact the school office for details.
Coming Up/Reminders…
Children’s University
We had 90 students graduate at the University of Newcastle last Wednesday night. Southy students combined for approximately 4200 passport hours of learning across the year. This is an amazing achievement! Well over 1000 hours was from new learning experiences (visiting museums, gallery’s, wetlands, reading new books, playing sports or taking up musical instruments). The program continues (never really stops actually). Any hours accumulated in Term 4 and the school holidays count towards next year’s graduation. Big thanks to all the students and their families for being involved in the Children’s University program this year. Family support of this incredible initiative and investing in your child’s learning has made it such a big hit.
Parent Requests for 2020 Classes
If your child has an issue with either a friendship group or an individual (in the past or this year), could you please contact the school via the school email address [email protected] as this information will be considered by the leadership team when forming 2020 classes. Please clearly mark the correspondence as Parent Class Request 2020. Please include your child’s grade for 2020. Please note, requests for specific teachers will not be considered. Even if you have told the school previously we need you to tell us again as we don’t store this information.
Family Band Night – Save the date!
The date has been set for our annual Family Band Night. This year the evening will take place on Friday 22nd
November. Please pop this into your diaries and onto your calendar. We look forward to seeing all of our band
members, both Junior and Senior, for a night to showcase our talent.
Funky Fridays (week 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
In preparation for the Year 6 Farewell, Year 6 students will be fundraising with Funky Friday activities. Funky
Friday is an annual tradition at Southy with Year 6 students running stalls on selected Friday lunchtimes, offering
products and services to younger students (hair gel & braiding, face painting, temporary tattoos, nail art etc). In
addition to fundraising, this also provides our Year 6 with an opportunity to organise and promote an event,
practise their customer services skills and handle money transactions in an authentic manner. Funky Friday
occurs in the hall from 1.20-1.50pm and is open to all students K-6.

Year 6 Farewell Planning Meeting No#3
Our next meeting is Tuesday 18 November at 5.30pm in 6N classroom. Parents and carers of Year 6 students
are welcome to attend.
CAMBODIAN CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE 2019 Today your eldest child will receive a note outlining our plans to support our Cambodian school students this Christmas. After official contracts were exchanged last year, we are now formally recognised as a ‘Sister School’ with Romdoul. Our agreement was that we will continue our support of the villagers in whatever capacity we can. Our Christmas Challenge this year will cost $50 to save one of our 162 students from malnutrition by providing one daily hot meal whilst at school, which satisfies the requirements as set by the World Health Organisation. Last year many families sponsored a child for the year while some provided a smaller donation to contribute to the cause. This one Christmas present is the gift of giving to someone in need who may never have the chance to say thank you. If you require further information on how you can help us reach our target, or if you or your organisation would like to support our village on a larger scale, please refer to the note or contact Mrs Moloney on [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your ongoing support of this campaign.
P & C News…
Our next P & C Meeting is the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday 3 December p2019 at 7pm in the
Staff room. Please come along and join in the discussion about our plans for the rest of the year and our
planning for 2020. Everybody is welcome.
P&C Facebook Group – WSPS P&C 2019/2020
The P&C have created a Facebook Group. It’s a great way to stay up to date on current events run by the
P&C and weekly volunteer lists, plus canteen and uniform shop price lists.
Our Facebook Group is a closed group. To gain access to this group there is a requirement to answer three
simple questions. This is a safety precaution and allows the administrators of the group to only accept parents
and carers from the school community.
The simplest way to find the group is to search under the groups tab for WSPS P&C 2019/2020

Major Fundraiser – Colour-A-Thon
Sponsorships forms are now overdue. If you have any forms or
funds, please return ASAP and winners will be announced next week.
Bright Star Kids – Fundraising
If you are after some labels for schoolbooks, pencil cases or any of your school supplies, check out
www.brightstarkids.com.au. Bright Star Kids give a percentage of every sale to the school, so not only will your
kids’ belongings never get lost again, but you will be helping us out! At the checkout you need to link a
fundraising account and then type in Wallsend South Public School.
ROUND 2 - CELEBRATION NIGHT
Thank you to everyone who has purchased tickets during the first round, which is now CLOSED.
The next purchasing window will occur in week 5 (next week). We have a minimal number of tickets available
however, so there will only be one extra ticket per family on offer. These will be distributed on a first-in, first-
served basis. We ask separated families to decide beforehand who will receive the extra ticket. Depending
on demand there unfortunately may be some families who will miss out.
We will again have two methods to purchase your extra ticket during the second round. Please note the
different dates and times for each method.
1. If you choose to buy via the Qkr! App, tickets will become available on Monday 11th November from 7pm,
until the pre-sale allocation is sold out.
2. You can pay by cash in person at school on Tuesday 12th November from 8.30am until the remainder of the
tickets is sold out.
As has been done in previous years, a table will be set up outside the canteen and you will be required to line
up on Tuesday 12th November to purchase the one (1) extra ticket on offer.
Please ensure you complete the second round ticket order form (hard copy being sent home with eldest child
or find it in this edition of Tallong) and bring it along to school with the correct amount of $15 and give it to the
P&C representatives at the table.
IMPORTANT: You cannot leave your money and form at school before Tuesday 12th November. Neither the
office staff, nor the canteen manager, will accept any round 2 notes and money. You MUST line up on Tuesday
November 12th at the table outside the canteen where our P&C representatives will be sitting.
